ooh you’re reading beast! when you finish, and only if you’re inclined, i’d be very curious to see your thoughts on how you make sense of chuuya’s character in that universe? personally, i have trouble analyzing him because he only appears for an insignificant paragraph cameo with virtually zero impact on the story— and tbqh there’s a tiiiiny tinhat part of me that suspects he was only included at all to head off questions about another potential dark-era-esque absence— but regardless of that and assuming asagiri did have something in mind with including him considering he is in there at the end of the day, i’d love to know how you make sense of him within that narrative?

yes, chuuya's hypervigilance and dazai's dismissiveness of him illustrate how far dazai's gone and how unreachable he's become, expositing Dazai's route of self destruction and foreshadowing his suicide.

i feel like from now on every time i get a dream as dazai (which has been happening on a near daily basis lately. for some reason) they will only get progressively more silly. or at least so i hope

Similar to main manga Fyodor imo! Though there are things that would affect him differently I think? Without the challenge that is an ADA Dazai that might change things for him, but I wonder if he would just be more sure of his plans or maybe a little more bored as time goes on? I know it was only added into the movie, but when he watches Dazai die and learns about the nature of their universe he does not even seem that surprised despite talking like this is new information to him, but also says the next thing to do or whatever is to take out Atushi and Akutagawa because too many people can't know about it or things will become unstable. So he seems just as ruthless as he is not in beast. But why does he care about that?

If I think about it too long it does make me wonder if he would come to the conclusion that he can't effect things within this "story" the same way as the other him that he has to assume exists could, that the book he could obtain in his universe isn't the same as "the Book". I don't do great with multiverse shit or explanations it gets confusing for me so I won't go too far into that I'll just confuse myself. But, idk if he would be one to give up or lament. Or just obtain even more information to try and solve things?

I wanted to blog about this gem for a while now. "The Wolf and The Dog" is as Paru as it get.

Meet Adamo.

Adamo is a 61 year old dog, a German shepherd to be specific. And he is a notorious stalker. And he is very good at it, but we will get to that in a minute.

Adamo doesn't think that what he does is creepy. He has an excellent nose and is a born tracker since that's what his family has been bred to be. Yes, even in Beastverse, dogs are a result of selective breeding.

His stalking is not of nefarious reasons as such, he is just obsessed with following animals his nose gets the attention of and learn everything about them for no reason than the satisfaction of the hunt.

But one day, the nose of this old dog catch a very special scent.

On his way home, Adamo notice a female wolf in his train who carries a massive bouquet of flowers with strong pleasant scents. As if she is hiding something. That's something a herbivore would normally do, so this catches Adamo's attention right away. He starts sniffing and learns surprisingly much about her, like that she can't be more than twenty and that she must work in an office filled with females as he can't notice any male scents. And she uses so much makeup and soap, anything to dim her own smell.

In his own mind, Adamo sees himself "painting" the female wolf and he now stalks her to learn everything about her.

Adamo gets sloppy for a second and gets noticed by the wolf. But she apparently doesn't realize he is stalking her, so she just smiles at him and goes on about her business... or her smile is a warning... or perhaps an invitation?

Adamo realize he is much more fixated about this wolf than any other of his targets, spending a month following her around.

It even seems like the old dog starts to have a strong affection towards the female wolf who BTW is named Fasa(appropriate name for her, look it up after reading this blog). She seems like a model citizen, early to bed, early to work and always nice to the elderly.

But in a Paru manga, that's often a red flag.

Adamu gets a closer look at her apartment...

... Damn.

Sure, there are plenty of predators in the Beastverse, but Fasa is an organized one, having chopped up her victim, keeping the different parts in bags in her fridge and eating brain and eyeballs, not wasting anything.

Adamo is shocked by what the female he has a creepy crush on has done and, without thinking, yells something he have not said in a long time:

Yep, Adamo is a retired police detective. No wonder he is such an effective stalker. And seeing someone committing a predator crime wakes up the old cop.

Fasa is however not intimidated by the old fart, she knew she was being watched, she just got sloppy and forgot to close her curtains. She smiles at Adamo when he says he used to be a police officer, recognizing a fellow canine who is a slave to their instincts. Fasa is a slave to her hunting instincts while Adamo is very much a dog, having only joined the police because he is good at tracking and at following orders. And now that he is retired, he keeps tracking other animals because he doesn't know what else to do.

Fasa then embrace Adamo, making the dog terrified as he has no idea if he is gonna end up in the wolf's fridge as well or if she is hugging him since they are "the same".

But then the actual cops comes.

Fasa is surprisingly calm about being arrested, not resisting at all. Feeling guilt about his unhealthy hobby, possibly because he was just reminded that he used to be a cop who arrested creeps like himself, Adamo is about to confess to the police officers that he is a stalker, but Fasa interrupts him.

Fasa claims that Adamo is in her apartment because she had kidnapped him and was about to eat him as well, then whispers to him that they are not similar at all.

... Makes you wonder if that is suppose to be assuring as his stalking is nowhere near as bad a crime as what she has done... or if it is degrading as he as a dog is a pale shadow of what a wolf is.

Either way, she smiles as she tells him to take care of himself, and the manga then ends with a perfect panel:

Adamo stands between the strong-smelling flowers Fasa used to hide the scent of the blood of her victim/victims, like she is covering up for his crime of stalking. The symbolism is chef-kiss worthy!

This is most likely in the top five of the best chapter of Beast Complex. Its a bittersweet tale and it is kinda funny how Fasa manage to appear more noble than Adamo... or at least have more dignity.

hmmm, yes in his youth. but when he got older and became more experienced with his magic, he probably made his crowned horns permanent. i don't believe he really enjoyed the awful burning, itching sensations that came with shedding (and yuck, imagine how bloody the velvet would be on anyone's head!) and he'd consider himself to look very undignified without his majestic antlers before his people. he's arrogant and strict about keeping his appearance on point in front of everyone that isn't his darling.

shedding also applies to those with just one horn as well (revius), not strictly just those with antlers.

tbf the equestrians would consider the first shedding the rite of passage and would encourage more sheds as they gets older, to better develop their growth and magic in general, before they'd seek ways to permanently stop the shedding. i kinda imagine that constantly growing new horns would take a lot of calcium, proteins, and other nutrients that it's not advised to keep shedding when they are no longer young adults as well.

IK this is kinda whack for me to say…but I was watching Spirited Away by Ghibili and there was a few brief scenes where they show how busy the bathhouse is. well, while there are brothels, there are also salons where the beastfolks employ humans for their smaller (and less dangerous) hands to better groom the clients. funny that you mentioned that lol because i thought about the salon ages ago but i just never found any room to talk about it in general until now.

but anyway, most of them are, or were in history, just fronts for "special services" in the midst of the then-super conservative towns fresh after the post-zoo breakout eras where both beastfolks and humans were struggling to learn to live among each other unharmed.

the brothels back then that featured both human and beastfolks employees were often made 'illegal'—especially since any sort of intimate relations were looked at negatively. this is the era where the possibility of humans bearing/providing full beastfolk was being "discovered", still, while being scoffed at. by being discovered, i mean both sides would soon realize it's not a talltale passed down by their ancestors and history books. so the 'salons' were the answer to that, offering special services catering to both sides.

that said, there were and are some genuine salons that provided only beauty services. probably commonly run by immigrants wanting to support their families and to help the parent (typically single mothers) in need, regardless of their species. i do imagine it would be pretty common to see very…strong-headed owners defending their employees from very unsavory clients too, since the salons back then would have an unfortunate correlation with those that provided sex services.

in short, the salons were essentially the massage parlors of our reality (the ones that featured 'special services', i mean). however, i considered massage parlors that featured both beastfolks and humans a bit…farfetched due to their strength differences that wouldn't work well for the other side (for example, a lioness would probably break a human's spine, while a human's attempt would be too weak for, say, a gorilla's). not to say that the massage parlors don't exist in the beastfolk au, because they do! but i don't believe having employees from both sides would be a common feature in the massage parlor, and i'm sure it's not uncommon to see them offering their own special services but it'd be limited to their own race/subspecies for the most parts.

so i decided that the salons would fit best and would probably be one of the common precursors to the idea that both humans and beastfolks can live in relative harmony. why? because the employees, and typically just the employees, as some employers are/were often…not good people in these special salons, commonly formed a tightknit bond for various reasons, typically stemming from the time spent together, since teamwork is often a necessary factor to groom a client (especially if the client is of much larger stature).

the salon was a great place to be to get some culture shock, tbh, back then, to see both sides working together to perfect a client's appearance to their satisfaction. as the years pass, i'm sure that the happy ending salon (terms are still pending, but i'm just stealing from the existing ones atm lol) would soon be outnumbered by actual licensed salons that provided no such services beyond beauty-related.

bathhouses are typically self-service in this au, so the attendants often kept discreet with their jobs while still respecting the privacy of their patrons. i imagine most of the beastfolks prefer their privacy (since some can be aggressive, more so when their families are there). if there are drinks and foods being delivered, the attendant would typically drop them off at the entryway and disappear.

meanwhile, the salons would have the employees on site, mingling and chattering with their clients.

in the modern era, the salon typically would hire just about anyone, those without an independent card included, and someone would often take it upon themselves to mentor the beginners. there are regulations that tried to make things harder for the owners, but well, those who experienced struggles and poverty in the past typically do not give a flying shit about the politics. this such culture tends to carry through countless individually-owned salons.

i can go on, really.

tbh, meeting your soulmate in the beauty salon is probably one of the most wholesome (and safe) ways you can get. security is practically in every corner, protective of one other and especially their little humans.

honestly, if you really want to, just ask your beastfolk spouse to take you to a bathhouse. the bathhouse often have a huge family culture and unlike our pitiful reality in the good ol' murica, the bathhouses are pretty much everywhere, though some do take a bit of drive. they never died out the way ours did in our history. some beastfolks are just too big to be comfortable relaxing in the bathtub in the common household bathrooms, so the demands for the bathhouses are still there in the au and would likely always be. and without a doubt, grooming is hugely embraced among the beastfolks, so they'd most definitely love it when their little human groom them (to the best to their ability, at least!).

the significance of ‘Adler’

‘Adler’ is an ancient play, with its roots stretching far in the past. Current research suggests that the play evolved from oral tradition during the era of Life Animals and Nature Animals. There are aspects from both cultures present, and as such, ‘Adler’ represents carni-herbi friendship.

The mystical nature of its protagonists also makes the play ideal for carni-herbi performances.¹ The simplicity of its story makes it an easy play to not only adapt, but add on, too, as well.

I must admit that I'm not one for the mystical: I genuinely prefer the idea of the play being real over the Grim Reaper himself being real (though that could also be interesting).

I doubt that the Beastverse would be aware that the story of Adler was based on a real event, but I don't necessarily see that as a negative thing. It's neither bad nor good; just a consequence of the world becoming more modernised and thus, more disconnected from those sort of stories as a result.

With the Grim Reaper being an actual entity, now, though? I sort of wonder what they would think about the play itself. And would Adler be the Grim Reaper's true name? Or, just what people have called him?

Either way, the idea reminds me of this one fic I skimmed aeons ago, where this god (the personification of beasts on something) did a species swap on Louis and Legoshi. Not the story, but the concept of there being a god, who is shapeless, genderless, and sort of morally dubious.

oda hates that even now he can’t seem to stop himself from pulling on the thread that he already knows will lead nowhere productive. "you said we were friends. once."

the bandaged man closes his eyes and takes in a breath as if holding on to a memory. "once."

when oda says nothing, there seems to be the understanding between them that this is an opening, perhaps the only one he may ever get. something plays across his face in an instant. for the briefest of moments, oda thinks he imagines a wince.

"you’ll regret going down this road," says the man. it seems too pained to be a warning though it is precisely that.

oda knows this. he has turned it in his head over and over. and yet, somehow, he knows with an inexplicable certainty that he will regret not knowing even more.

It’s a Beastverse fic, Dazai goes incognito to take a very normal and healthy night off from leading the Port Mafia and maybe try to hook up with a totally random stranger he has definitely never met before and it goes super great.

“I’m good at it,” Dazai says, fingers tightening on Oda’s sleeve.

His blood is Mafia black, after all.

“That doesn’t mean you enjoy it,” Oda says, too-serious and so typically perceptive, and his eyes are so piercing Dazai has to look away, hiding behind a curtain of too-straight hair and for a moment struggling just to breathe.

“This person you care about,” Oda says, pressing the issue in void his silence has left, “it’s one thing to sacrifice for their happiness but another to hollow yourself out completely, making yourself worse, even for another’s sake would be–”

“Worth it.”

Oda goes silent.

Hmm. Shouldn’t have said that.

It’s not the words–he’s sure he could’ve worked a little more self-deprecation into the narrative–but the tone. It’s too cold, too certain, too close to himself rather than the voice he’s hiding behind. 

Too true.

“Would this person agree with you?” Oda asks quietly, and against Dazai’s will that touches another raw nerve.

“That–” he starts, but manages to bite down on the rest of the sentence this time.

That doesn’t matter.

if dazai didn't know chuuya wasn't a vampire.. this whole scenario could be so zer//hys coded.. trusting that chuuya won't actually kill him just bc it's chuuya, even when all evidence points otherwise. mmm

#a tldr of what i'm referring to. scenario where character a is an assassin that works for character b #there is apparently someone killing b's workers and they look like a. everyone keeps telling b that a defected and is out to get him #but b insists that can't be the case because a would never hurt him. even up until a stands in front of him with their sword raised #and the thing is! b was right! this is someone pretending to be a! and a saves him at the nick of time! and it's awesome. #bl3's writing is a bit abysmal but they really popped off with that one it still lives in my head forever #. also apparently i thought abt this similarity before and made a post abt these 2 ships back in august too. oops #IT'S ABOUT THE BLIND TRUST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! #i'd say the original scenario could work well in the beastverse somehow but as i typed smth abt that. i realized canon works even better
