Seven Sentence Sunday

“Is Evan…?”

Margaret’s uncertainty seeps out of every syllable as her sentence trails off. The question hangs in the air between them, and it’s only when Margaret dips her head towards the rosary in Bobby’s hands—still clenched tightly in his fists as though letting the beads go would be paramount to cutting Buck’s line—that Bobby understands the question.

Bobby knows Buck’s parents weren’t particularly religious with their children’s upbringing. And while Buck himself had kept Bobby company in the pews more than once, he’d never expressed a particularly strong opinion in one way or another. The kid was certainly carrying the world on his shoulders; weighed down with loss and unwarranted guilt, but it wasn’t of the catholic variety.

“No,” Bobby says quietly, his thumb catching on the small grooves between the beads, worrying at them with the same hands that cradled Buck’s lifeless body three nights ago, “but I don’t think he’d mind.”

"Wanna talk about why I just got a call from school?" Mav asks, leaning against the door. Bradley sits at his table, staring blankly at his homework. The room is silent, and when Mav realises that Bradley won't reply to him, he sighs and and walks in, shutting the door with a quiet click.

"You've been getting into fights, I would like to know why a straight A student is starting to fall behind in class." Maverick says, sitting himself on the bed. "Is it because of your mother, Brad?" This gets a reaction. The brunette tenses, his shoulders rigid.

The boy turns around, and Maverick's heart sinks at the sight. Bradley's eyes are filled with tears, and only now does Maverick realise he's been crying silently.

He sighs, his lips tugging down into a frown. He opens his arms, and how could Bradley ignore the offer? Uncle Mav gives the best hugs and Bradley is desperately in need of one right now.

So, he launches himself off of the chair and into Man's awaiting arms, only now letting his tears fall. "Shh, it's okay kid." His uncle soothes, his hand gliding up to run through his hair.

"They're so mean." He whispers after a while, tears that seem to never end still rolling down. "Who's mean, Bradley?" Maverick asks, lying against the bed and dragging his god son with him.

"The kids at school. There's a daughter of an admiral there, and they keep teasing me about how I don't have a father." He continues, "But I do, you know? It's you, but they don't get that and so they keep making digs at me about how my father's death your fault. But I know it's not. And I hate anyone disrespecting you, Mav."

Maverick's silent for a moment before he breaks the silence with an inhale. "While I appreciate you defending my honour, you don't need to, okay? I'm an adult, I can fight my own battles, and I don't need your help. I understand that with your mum being gone, everything's so much harder, but kid, you're only a child. Live it. Enjoy it."

"But-"

"No buts. Okay? Why don't you go for a shower and I'll get dinner started. We'll watch a movie tonight, how does that sound? Tomorrow, I'll sort it out with the admiral's daughter tomorrow, okay? Who knows, maybe even Uncle Ice will come tomorrow."

Bradley nods, giving Maverick one last hug before he's out the door, clothes already tucked under his arms.

Maverick gets up and heads his way down to the kitchen.

WIP Wednesday (how is it only Wednesday)

Thank you for the tag @rewritetheending (and for all the WIP Game tags that I’m too scared to look at haha) i had a busy exhausting daaaay, so here’s some soft Bobby and Buck :)

Buck’s hands weakly reach towards his face, fingers fumbling at the nasal cannula as he slowly shifts into wakefulness.

“Easy kid, leave it alone,” Bobby soothes as he stands to gently tug Buck’s arms back down—careful to avoid the gauze covering the electrical burns on his hands, and the tubes administering fluids and pain relief into his IV.

Buck makes a small sound, a half-awake kind of grumble of indignation at being manhandled but he doesn’t fight Bobby’s careful hold—too weak to make a real difference anyway—focusing instead on tilting his head to the side as though drawn to the comforting timber of his captain's voice.
