African Buffalo by the Chobe River, Botswana
Geranimo
Kill rate: 200 human deaths per year
Conservation status: Least Concern (Population decreasing)
Trophic level: Herbivorous
Mass: 660 – 2,000 lbs (Adult)
Lifespan: 15-25 years
Scientific name: Syncerus caffer
Speed: 37 miles per hour
The African buffalo is a large sub-Saharan African bovine. There are five subspecies that are recognized as being valid. Syncerus caffer caffer, the Cape buffalo, is the nominotypical subspecies, and the largest one, found in Southern Africa and East Africa.
The African buffalo is one of the most successful grazers in Africa. It lives in savannas, swamps and floodplains, as well as mopane grasslands, and the forests of the major mountains of Africa. This buffalo prefers a habitat with dense cover, such as reeds and thickets, but can also be found in open woodland.
Grass forms the bulk of the buffalo's diet. Without fresh green feed, buffaloes deteriorate rapidly. They devote a large portion of their time to grazing and feeding. After grazing on grass, just like cows, they spend time chewing their cud (or bolus) to extract even more nutrients from their food.

Stretching from the Linyanti River all the way to Savute Marsh, the winding waterways of the Savute Channel have pumped life into the western section of Chobe National Park for many thousands of generations. However, this fickle and unpredictable channel, which has a fascinating history of flooding and drying up, independently of good rainy seasons and flood levels elsewhere, has mystified local inhabitants, geologists and others for many years.  When David Livingstone, the first European to visit the area, saw the Savute Channel in 1851 it was flowing. Thirty years later it had disappeared and the Savute Marsh had dried out, remaining this way for almost 80 years. It flowed again from the late 1950s to the early 1980s, when it again receded, hence its reputation as ‘the river that flows in both directions’.
-----------------

We stayed at a game lodge on the banks of the Chobe River in Chobe National Park. The lodge is known for having all female rangers. We could have spent our entire time on the boats floating up and down the river and watching the wildlife, but we did go on one game drive. We were very impressed with our rangers and what they described as Botswana's very serious, very successful protection of their wild critters.

One thing i really love about Jigokuraku is how it portrays nudity outside of sexual contexts, like when Nurugai and Tenza clean off in the river or when Gabi and the others take baths at Hoko's house, or Rien's final form, there's nothing sexual about it, they're just naked.
It also contrasts with when something sexual is actually happening, like when we meet Tao Fa and Ju Fa for the first time and the scene with Rien and Chobe, its sexual yes but it doesn't have that fanservice-y feel. It just happens.

Chobe River forms the northern boundary of Chobe National Parkand begins its existence as a small mountain spring in Angola, where it is known as the Kwando. From here, it travels great distances through the Kalahari sands before it reaches Botswana and becomes the Linyanti. It finally becomes the Chobe at the border post of Ngoma, from where it continues to run along Botswana’s northern border before meeting the mighty Zambezi and tumbling over the precipice at Victoria Falls. The Chobe’s course, like the Okavango and the Zambezi River, is affected by fault lines which are extensions of the Great Rift Valley.
------------------
