Five times Diego and Eudora almost kissed, and one time they did.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

I’ve been wanting to write this fic for so long, and today is the day. I’ve never done a 5+1 before, but I had a lot of fun writing this!

“You’re gonna get kicked out if you keep showing up late to class.”

Diego didn’t exactly know when or how he decided to become a police officer.

He told himself it was to help people. It wasn’t exactly a lie, but there was more to it. There’s always more to it. He needed to get into school if he wanted to get out of his so-called home, and since he wasn’t exactly new to fighting crime, the police academy accepted him.

Maybe the reason he wanted to get in so bad was because playing superhero was the only thing he knew how to do well.

“It’s not my fault the stupid bus driver hates my guts,” Diego said, placing his backpack on his desk and putting his book in it.

A piece of paper was shoved into his hands. Diego scanned it before realising it was the notes he’d missed from the beggining of the lecture. “You’re welcome, by the way.”

He smiled. “Thanks, Dora.”

“Don’t call me that.”

Eudora Patch was unlike anyone Diego had ever met. Then again, Diego hadn’t met that many people. Eudora was top of the class at everything, getting straight A’s at every test, acing every exercise, and somehow, she was his friend.

“Sure,” he said, not bothered enough to shake the smirk off his face. “Though I thought we’d reached first-name basis.”

Eudora rolled her eyes. “Well,” she helped Diego zip his bag closed, her fingers playfully brushing his. “My name isn’t Dora.”

“Right, right.” Their fingers were still touching even after the backpack was fully closed, and the heat of her touch was starting to make its way up Diego’s face. “Eudora.”

It was the most beautiful name he’d ever heard, and his heart skipped like a thousand beats whenever it rolled off his tongue. It wasn’t until recently that she’d let him use it—him, only him, while everyone else called her Patch—and he’d never wanted to use his voice more before. To say it, with a stutter or without. He just wanted to hear her name.

She slipped her hand into his, and Diego stroked the back of it without thinking about it much. In fact, he wasn’t thinking about anything, except for how close the two of them were, of how closer they kept coming—

“Jeez, you two look like newlyweds or something.”

They pulled away in less than a second, Diego reaching for his backpack to look casual and Eudora taking a thousand steps back. Dammit, Rodriguez.

“Eh, maybe for now,” another voice argued. “They usually look like an old married couple.”

They were their friends, and Diego loved them, but Beaman and Rodriguez could be really annoying sometimes.

“We do not.” Eudora crossed her arms. “I was just giving him my notes.”

“Well, did he ask you for them, or did you just take them for him before he even showed up?”

“Fuck off, Rodriguez,” Diego mumbled, clumsily shoving the notes in his pocket and putting on his backpack.

The man patted his back. “Relax, we’re just messing with you.”

“When aren’t we?” Beaman asked and Eudora slapped his arm. “Christ, Patch, that hurts!”

Eudora shrugged. “Oops.”

Diego bit his lip and looked away as he tried not to think of what would have happened if they hadn’t been interrupted before.

At least he had her notes.

Headcanon that Diego chooses his words very carefully. He would study the dictionary every night, practising the words until his tongue and jaw ached, so when Beaman said he and Patch had a contentious relationship he had to ask - “Did she say that? Did she use that word?” because he knows the very real weight words can have.

A/N: Thank you Nonny. This was the perfect prompt for tonight. Word Count: 1075 Content Warnings: nightmare; discussion of death, hospitals

“Y/N Hargreeves?” the voice on the other end of the phone asked.

“Yes, this is her. May I ask who’s calling?” you felt every muscle in your body tense.

You and Diego were careful, you almost never got junk or scam calls, and the ones you did were catch-alls not kind that used a name. Plus the man on the line sounded official, too official.

“My name is Officer Chuck Beaman. I work with Eudora Patch. She’s the one that told me to call you.”

“Dora told you to call? Why isn’t she calling me yourself? What’s wrong?” You heard your voice rising in volume and octave.

“Ma’am, I need you to calm down.”

You took a deep breath.

“I am calm,” you spat through gritted teeth.

“Officer Patch is currently handling a situation, but...ma’am, it’s your husband.”

Your heart stopped, a vice grip closed around your throat. You struggled to breathe, to fight down the blood rushing to your ears so you could hear the rest of what the police officer was saying.

“...hospital...soon…” you caught and that was all you needed to hear.

“Thank you officer.” You said in a rush, slamming the receiver down and rushing for shoes and keys.

You didn’t remember the drive or walking into the entrance. Had you even spoken to a receptionist or nurse before finding your way to the right place?

Diego looks so small laying there in the bed, so fragile. The heart monitor beeped so slowly, too slowly. And then it began to scream.

And so did you.

There was a hand on your shoulder, shaking you gently. The contact jolted you, cutting off the sound of your distress with a sharp gasp. your eyes flew open, looking wildly around the darkened room.

“Hey, hey,” Diego soothed, speaking lowly to catch your attention without scaring you further.

He hovered over you in your bed, still holding onto your arm and you looked up at him, vision blurring with tears.

“Diego?” you whispered, your dream feeling too real.

“I’m right here,” he murmured, following your movements as you forced yourself to sit up. “What’s wrong?”

You reached out for him, gripping his arms with white knuckles, afraid that he would slip like sand through your fingers if you let go now. Slowly you tugged closer until he closed the rest of the distance to wrap his arms around your shoulders. You buried your face in his chest, arms tucked under his and fingers curling in the soft white cotton across his shoulder blades.

“Y/N?” his voice was a little firmer, feeling you trembling in his arms.

You shook your head, not wanting to speak your nightmare into being.

“I don’t want to lose you,” you murmured eventually, voice muffled.

“Lose me? Why would you lose me?” he hugged you tighter.

“They...and then you were...and it...I can’t.”

“Shh, it’s okay,” he released his hold with one hand, stroking it gently through your hair in a calming motion instead. “It was just a nightmare.”

Neither of you were sure how long they sat there, wrapped in each other, you clinging for dear life and Diego just trying to be the anchor that you needed. Eventually, your shakes subsided, your tears turning to only the occasional sniffle. But still you didn’t let go, your grip on him only relaxing slightly, just enough to maybe not bruise.

“It wasn’t just a nightmare, it was my worst nightmare. I don’t know when it became that, but it did, and it was and...” you admitted, holding your breath as you waited for his answer.

Diego leaned his cheek on the top of your head. “I’m here...what do you need?”

“You’re not allowed to die, okay?” you asked quietly, voice tiny and pleading. “Promise me you won’t.”

His only answer was a sharp intake of breath, barely noticeable if you weren’t pressed to his chest.

Silence fell over the two of you, still and heavy. Tentatively you leaned back, pulling away to look at your husband who was staring down at you, a shaken look on his face.

“Diego, baby,” you said softly, slipping your hand down his arm to take his hand in yours and calling his attention back to you. “What’s wrong?”

“Y-you’re that worr-worried about me?” he asked, something like awe in his voice at the idea.

“Of course I am, Diego. You’re my husband, my partner in crime, the love of my life. I can’t stand the thought of ever losing you.”

“Y/N…” you watched his face soften and he squeezed your interlocked hands.

“I know. It’s stupid. I should be able to trust you to be careful and that nothing is going to happen, and I shouldn’t worry. Even if there was a reason to, it’s not something you can control. It’s not like you’re going out of your way to get hurt and the only way to guarantee that you would never is to ask you to stop doing what you do and I would never. I just…”

Your eyes stung as tears began to build up and then fall again, and immediately his free hand was on your cheek.

“Stop. Baby, it’s okay.” He pulled you in, resting his forehead against yours. “I’m not going anywhere. But it’s okay if you’re scared of it. I worry about you too.”

“But you don’t have nightmares about it that wake us both up screaming.”

“No. I don’t,” his mouth twisted in a small, bittersweet smile. “I’ve got other shit instead.”

You frowned in confusion but he chuckled before you could say anything.

“We’re both a little screwed up. But we’ve got each other, and we’ll get through it.”

You smiled, nuzzling your nose against his, finally feeling the tension of the dream lift off your shoulders.

“I’m sorry for waking you up,” you said sheepishly.

He shook his head, laying back down and pulling you with him, wrapping an arm around your waist, and burying his face in your hair for a moment.

“Don’t apologize. I’ll wake up every 3am for you if that’s what it takes.”

“I love you, Diego,” you tried to quell the yawn that rose up as you spoke but failed, causing his rumbling laugh to vibrate through you.

“I love you too, sweetheart. Goodnight.”

As you nestled closer, you felt sure that there would be no more nightmares, at least not for tonight.

And he likes and respects Diego too and knows he just wants to help people and you can tell Chuck totally knows how much Diego loves patch and idk I love him. more Chuck Beaman content 2k19

Imagine the waitresses trying to subtly figure out who belongs to who so they know who to address in case someone's occupied/not there atm and they just... can't.

Henry Cardenas

Origin/Fandom: The Ascent (2016)

Background: Henry Cardenas was born and raised in Mexico where he met the love of his life in his teens and married her out of high school. He came to the United States for work and sent money home until his wife could join him 2 years later. They worked many odd jobs together and tried to conceive for a few years until they had a son. They were never able to have another child, but they were grateful and happy for the family they had. When their son got older and started reading advanced books, he started talking about revolution, systemic oppression, and other topics that scared Henry to the point of making him angry. In his attempts to control his son, he ran away at 14, and joined a gang that he said ‘understood the cause’. He was killed by police officers after turning 18. In his mourning, Henry had to find some kind of meaning out of his son’s death. He decided to go into the police force so he could look out for his community, especially the young teens of color who ended up homeless or who ran away, and to try to prevent other senseless tragedies from occurring in the future. Henry and his wife decided to adopt, formally or informally, different teens Henry would come across at work who were in desperate need of help.

Relationship To MC: Henry, along with Chuck and Jester, find Diego and offer him an opportunity to make money in the underground fighting scene.

Relationship to other characters: Henry is the biological father of Pedro, formal adoptive father of Jester and Gabriela, informal adoptive father of Chuck and Vince, and foster father to Lucas and Miguel.

Susanna Hernandez Cardenas

Origin/Fandom: El Chicano (2018)

Background: Susanna Hernandez was born to a large, loving, but poor family and raised in Mexico. She met Henry in high school and fell in love with his kindness, dedication, and respect for her, marrying him after graduation with her father’s blessing. Being told of the ‘American Dream’ through various cultural and media references, she shared his aspirational dreams of making a better life in the United States. She waited and worked her own jobs for 2 years before she came to join him. She was only able to ever conceive and carry one son, suffering from fertility issues. She devoted her life to raising him and being the best mother she could be, though she could not stop him when he wanted to run away from home. She was devastated when her son was killed ‘by accident’ in an act of police brutality, never fully recovering. Still, being a mother was her passion and life’s work, and she came up with the idea of adopting teens of color in need with her husband who might be particularly vulnerable to experiencing the same kind of senseless violence. Her protective streak ran a mile wide alongside her kindness and devotion to her children.

Relationship To MC: Susanna hears many different stories about Diego, but finally meets him in person just after his 20th birthday and during the week leading up to Dia De Los Muertos.

Relationship to other characters: Susanna is the biological mother of Pedro, formal adoptive mother of Jester and Gabriella, informal adoptive mother of Chuck and Vince, and foster mother to Lucas and Miguel.

Detective Chuck Beaman

Origin/Fandom: The Umbrella Academy (Season 1/?)

Background: Chuck was born to a Latina mother and African American father, both in their late teens. The couple believed they were head-over-heels in love, and lived as such until Chuck was four when things started to change. Chuck was too young to remember, but both of his parents struggled with drug addictions and were unable to provide a safe, consistent home for him. This often resulted in Chuck having to fend for himself, or when he was a bit older, having to take on the roles of cooking and cleaning and taking care of his younger siblings. When he was 10, he and his siblings were taken from their home and put into separate homes in the foster care system. Chuck started to get into trouble not long after that, becoming a behavioral problem and refusing to cooperate with any of his social workers or foster parents. Most of those parents proved to be neglectful or physically abusive. Chuck would start to form bonds with his foster siblings and attempt to protect them like he attempted to protect his own. Henry came upon Chuck as a police escort during another foster-home change, and quickly connected with him. Due to Chuck’s mother still having some custody rights, Henry and his wife were unable to adopt him, but Henry personally looked out for him and aided him in learning how to become emancipated at 16.

Relationship To MC: Chuck and Jester discover young Diego on the streets and see him fight off a whole group of skinheads by himself. They, along with Henry, offer him a chance for a different life. Chuck is about 7 years older than Diego. Chuck eventually becomes Detective Beaman.

Relationship to other characters: Chuck is the oldest “child” of Henry and his wife after being shuffled through foster homes as a young teen. Henry helped Chuck gain emancipation, and then welcomed him unofficially into his family as his own son.

”Jester” Cardenas

Origin/Fandom: We Die Young (2019)

Background: Jester was found on the streets by Henry when he was 12 after he had gained a reputation for stealing food, clothing, or other essentials from different local stores. Although he was born in America, his parents had been undocumented, and both were deported suddenly one day to their home country of El Salvador. Jester refused to go into the foster system after he wasn’t allowed to be deported with them, and ran away instead to try to make it on his own. Henry picked up on the kid’s patterns of stealing, and knew he wasn’t dealing with a typical teenage delinquent. He was able to approach him with compassion when he finally found him, and felt compelled to adopt him when he and his wife heard his story. Jester refused to go by his birth name, and adopted the name Jester due to his off-beat nature that often resulted in either humorous jokes, or unorthodox fighting styles, sometimes at the same time.

Relationship to MC: Jester, along with Chuck and Henry, discover Diego’s significant fighting skills after watching him take on a group of skinheads alone. He picks a fight with Diego to further test those skills, before he loses and Diego is offered a chance to become an underground fighter. Jester is about a year older than Diego.

Relationship to other characters: Jester is the biological cousin of Gabriella who is two years older. They are technically siblings by adoption. He is one of a few officially adopted children of Henry and his wife.

Gabriela Cardenas

Origin/Fandom: We Die Young (2019)

Background: Gabriela, along with her parents, was originally from El Salvador. She was born with Spina Bifida and required extensive special care in the first few years of her life. This prompted her parents (along with Jester’s) to move to the US both for better medical care for her and for a bigger community of support from other relatives who had already immigrated. Her parents were hardworking, but spent most of their money on Gabriela’s medical care as she grew up. When they had to renew their permanent resident cards, they only had enough money to renew Gabriela's, forcing them to let their own lapse. They made plans to save money to reinstate their documents, but never got the chance, as they were deported at the same time as Jester’s parents. Gabriela was 14 at the time, and went into the foster care system. Vincent Marins

Origin/Fandom: The Ascent (2017)

Background: Vince’s background was a bit of a mystery given how he choose to share it at any given time. He liked to go on long rambling stories of different points of his past that might make someone skeptical or laugh until they can’t stand it. It was difficult to tell when he was being serious, and how he felt about a given situation. However, he was also prone to random moments of pure, unfiltered honesty. He was tri-lingual, speaking Spanish, Portuguese, and English fluently and seemed to know a slew of phrases and words from other languages as well. What was known for sure was that Vince was transferred to Henry and his wife’s care through the foster system just shy of his 16th birthday, and disappeared for a year once he turned 18. He returned with some new sets of skills and a few bad habits, but he still remained loyal to the most steady family he’s ever had, sometimes even to a fault.

Relationship to MC: Vince meets Diego with a group of men associated with the family on the way to Diego’s first underground fight.

Relationship to other characters: Vince is a former foster child of Henry and his wife who never got to be officially adopted as he aged out of the system too quickly. He also meets Klaus on the streets. He is about 4 years older than Diego.

Pedro Cardenas (deceased)

Origin/Fandom: El Chicano (2018)

Background: Pedro Cardenas was born in the United States to Henry and Susanna Cardenas. He grew up as an only child due to his parents struggle with conceiving a child. Their family didn’t have a lot of money, though his parents do everything they can to make sure he never goes without the necessities. Pedro grows up watching their struggle with getting access to better jobs, being subjected to discrimination with his parents or with his peers at school, and always having questions about why. He was also considered gifted by his teachers at school, and encouraged to read and study at higher levels that the rest of his peers. Pedro stumbles upon different revolutionary works, philosophies, and concepts in the same library he spent a lot of his youth’s free time. He learns, to the best of his young ability, about systemic racism and discrimination, and wants to change the world with the ideas of revolution. Anytime he brought up the ideas to his father, he would become significantly angry, and pushed Pedro away more and more until he runs away from home at 14 to find those who believed the same as him. Pedro became involved in gang activity and activism, and any extra money he acquired, he sent home to his parents. He was killed by police at 18.

Relationship To MC: Diego never meets Pedro in person before he dies, instead first seeing his alter in the family home when he meets Susanna, Lucas, and Manny for the first time.

Relationship to other characters: Pedro is the deceased biological son of Susanna and Henry.

Lucas

Origin/Fandom: We Die Young (2019)

Background: Lucas is born and raised in the US. His mother dies shortly after Miguel is born, and their father abandons them not long after that. When their older brother is old enough, he takes them out of foster care to help raise them on his own. Their old brother dies after going into the army to bring in more money and resources for the family, and Lucas and Miguel end up in foster care again. Luckily, this time they ended up in a loving family with Henry and Susanna.

Relationship To MC: Diego meets Lucas in preparation for Día De Los Muertos celebrations. Lucas is 6 years younger than Diego.

Relationship to other characters: Lucas is the biological brother of Miguel, and foster brother to the rest of the ‘siblings.’ He has been in Henry and Susanna’s care for about two years when Diego meets them.

Miguel

Corrupted

Footsteps echoed through the house as muffled screams could be heard. Heart rates skyrocketed as the footsteps came closer before stopping.

“Hello! Welcome to your end.”

“Six men are now dead after their insides have melted away. Police still don’t know…” The TV drowned out as you turned your attention back to your friend sitting across from you in a booth at your favourite diner. It wasn’t the best but it reminded you a lot of Griddy’s Doughnuts.

“Isn’t that horrible? I can’t believe that the police haven’t caught who has done it!” Your close friend started to talk before picking up her coffee.

“Yeah, but burning insides is pretty insane,” You replied.

“Yeah, I guess that’s true,” They replied. You looked at them and fear began to rise in your stomach as you knew what they were about to ask.

“Have you called Diego yet?”

You took a deep breath in and ran your hands through your hair.

“No, I really do want to. I haven’t spoken to any of them in years. Last time I saw them all and our father was when I left,”

“I know, Y/n. That’s why you should see them again. I think it would do you well if you were able to connect again, you know?” Your friend continued to push. You watched her for a while before you picked up your cup of coffee again.

“I know, I will eventually,” You replied.

“Hello! Welcome to your end.” A voice called out. Two men were standing in front of a hooded figure suddenly became one. One suddenly fell to his knees and ultimately his death as his insides burnt up. The second man was looking in shock at the body before staring at the hooded person before he felt his insides start to melt too.

Diego was walking around the warehouse where the police had been called for another murder in the melting victims case. He couldn’t understand how all the victims died from being melted away but had no burns on the outside. He had already found the two new bodies and was scoping out the rest of the warehouse when he saw someone standing in the corner.

“Don’t come near me, Diego,” You stated in a calm voice.

“Y/n? Is that you? What’s going on?” Diego questioned, growing confused. “You do know that there is a killer in the building at the moment. They just tried to kill two other men!” Diego tried to explain.

“I know, but they weren’t meant to die,” You continued in your calm tone. Diego gave you a concerned look, still not piecing it together. “You are.”

Diego’s face suddenly dropped as he realised what was happening. You were the killer.

“Y/n? You’re the one killing the men! But that wasn’t your power?!” Diego tried to step towards you. You raised your hands ready to attack but he stopped in his tracks. When you were younger, you were able to heat objects. You weren’t great at it, you were only just capable of warming up a cup of water which caused Reginald to despise you.

“It's funny what hate makes you do,” You mumbled, walking towards Diego.

“Y/n, listen. What you are doing is wrong. You can’t-” Diego tried to persuade you, raising his hand with the knife tucked in it, ready to attack if he really needed to.

“No, what dad did was wrong. He ruined our lives! I can’t even sleep anymore without seeing what he did to us in my dreams!” You screamed at Diego. Diego’s heart started to break down as he began to realise how broken you were.

“You don’t know, do you?” Diego questioned. “Luther was meant to tell you.”

“Tell me what?!” You spat back.

“D-Dad’s dead, y/n,” Diego whispered.

“W-What? F-For real?” You questioned.

“He died of a heart attack about a month ago,” Diego explained. He watched as your face began to break, not knowing what to feel after so many years of hating the man who took you from your family. Your chest started to hurt and you were confused when tears ran down your cheek. You collapsed down into sobs. Diego made his way up to you.

“Hey, I’ve got you,” He whispered in your ear, brushing your hair behind your ear.

“Well, all I say is good riddance old prick,” You mumbled into his chest. Diego could feel tears forming in his own eyes as he began to speak to you again.

“You do know we missed you when you left right?” He told you, his voice breaking.

“I missed you too,” You replied, showing no sign of letting go of your brother.

Diego looked up and nodded as the tears began to fall down his cheeks. Detective Chuck Beaman and his team made their way in and quickly grabbed your arms, pulling them behind your back and cuffing them as Diego moved backwards.

“D-Diego? What’s going on?” You questioned. Diego just stared at you while he cried.

“Diego don’t let them take me!” You screamed. The police dragged you out of the building with Diego following close behind. He continued to cry as you screamed while being taken away to the cop car. At that moment, Diego promised himself that he would never tell the others that he knew about what had become of you but in his mind, he could already see the headlines on tomorrow’s paper.
