#Comic Book SNAFU

Note
from this post: do you have some hc's about some hbowar characters? can you tell me more about them?
Oh this is fun, I don't have a ton. But I will share what I have.
This is more general than character specific, but all the Easy Co boys share books they've got. If one person gets their hands on a book it's gonna make its way through the company.
Snafu is absolutely the kind of guy who doodles all the time and often in the worst places. oh that was important? well now it's got silly little drawings in the margins.
Burgie has 100% scruffed Snafu like a cat
Chuckler is the kind of guy who will reign himself in until he's close friends with someone but the second they're close he's constantly all over them. he's resting his arms on shoulders, he'll take a nap on them, he's sharing his clothes. Anything to show that his friend and to just be near them in general bc he's a touchy feely guy
Hoosier can in fact nap standing up, something that horrifies the other guys in H Company bc it's bad enough when he gets horizontal but now he can do it standing up?? he just doesn't let himself do it often bc there's a war on after all
Liebgott not only loves comics but he actually wanted to illustrate them as a kid, he just was never quite good enough to think it viable and now it's just a rare hobby
Curt is in fact Bucky's big spoon, he's just also little spoon to Buck
Cosby and Bubbles don't have to speak in full sentences, they know each other too well.
they also have a running joke about Bubbles running off with Jean (which Croz is not actually opposed to as long as he's being run off with as well) and Crosby would actually prefer if he didn't make it home that Bubbles did and he and Jean got to be happy together because he loves them both so much he just wants them happy
Demarco brushed out Meatball ONE time in the barracks before being banned from ever doing that inside again and now he has to find a spot downwind from any planes being worked on to avoid getting the fur anywhere it shouldn't be

PORTLAND: The first Friday of every month I do office hours at @bookswpictures on SE Division, where I look at comics work by emerging artists and give them the kind of feedback they'd get from me at a comic con portfolio review or an art college classroom.
Here's how it works:
Sign up at the desk when you arrive. Wear a good mask. I'll be wearing one too. Bring 6-8 pages of comic book storytelling to show me. (Not character designs, or covers, or stand-alone drawings. That's not my specialty, and I'm not the best guy to offer advice on that.) Show me comics: pages of storytelling with panels. I'll give you detailed feedback and advice based on my 30 years making comics in a variety of modes and genres.
Originals or copies? Copies are better. I can make notes on them directly, and besides, Portland is RAINY rn. And yes, I *can* look at your work on an ipad, but if possible please print it out. Much easier to critique, fewer tech snafus!
What does this cost? IT'S FREE.
Also if you're on some other site with emerging comics people, spread the word there? I met with a class of Portland comics artists last week & not one of them is on twitter or tumblr. I'm proud to be offering this, and I'd really like for more new local artists to hear about it.
One more thing: I only do this in person, not by zoom or email. I get requests in my DMs to do crits remotely, but that’s just not something my schedule permits. The face to face work is all I can handle.
Hope to see you Friday!

So, I'm trying out an art project (and might pick up a sideblog for it- we'll have to see)- where I'm redesigning and re-drawing a Golden Age comic book that's in the public domain.*
This is Kid Eternity. He's sort of the 1940s' answer to Danny Phantom. The Kid is a young boy who was killed when the Nazis sunk his grandpa's ship and got sent to a Suspiciously Non-Denominational Cloudy Afterlife. But because he died years and years before his time, Kid Eternity was given the ability to go back to earth and right wrongs. When he says the word "eternity", he can summon the spirit of a historical/literary character and command them to help him.
Comparison pics, and legal disclaimer, under the cut.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
from left to right: the original Kid Eternity + his guardian/mentor, Mr. Keeper // the 90s reboot of Kid Eternity with Grant Morrison // my take on/redesign of the character. I'm probably going to refine the design as time goes on (and I get better at art!), but I'm in a place where I'm happy enough sharing what I've got that y'all get to see.
LEGAL DISCLAIMER: Kid Eternity is in the public domain, as far as I can tell. Right now, technically, DC owns the character. but from what I can gather in the legal snafu, Kid Eternity and all of his Golden Age appearances are in the public domain, but anything DC added is off limits. So I won't be calling the Kid "Kit Freeman", he won't be wearing sunglasses, he won't be associated with the Teen Titans, etc. etc. etc.

Bumpy: "Help me reach the top."
[Blob creates a slime ladder.]
Blob: "Climb away!"
[Ladder collapses into a pile of slime.]
Bumpy: "I'm down, not up!"
Montage 9: "Slippery Sled" [Scene: Bumpy wants to sled down a hill.]
Bumpy: "Let's go sledding!"
[Blob makes a slime sled.]
Blob: "Hop on!"
[Sled slides uncontrollably, crashes into a snowbank.]
Bumpy: "That was more of a crash than a slide!"
Montage 10: "Blob's Slipstream" [Scene: Bumpy is trying to catch a ball.]
Bumpy: "Toss me the ball!"
[Blob creates a slime hand to catch the ball.]
Blob: "I've got it!"
[Slime hand misses the ball completely.]
Bumpy: "Guess we need some practice."
And there you have it, a series of comical montages showing Blob's failed attempts to help Bumpy with his slime powers.

Time for a reminder: You cannot sell legally fanfiction in any way, shape or form. You cannot add a patreon link to your AO3 account, you can't sell PDFs of your fanfiction, you can't commission fanfiction with money. Can't do it. Period.
Now the question is, why can you make money off of fanart and not fanfiction? Technically speaking, fanart falls under the same legally dubious status. While an artist can claim fair use for creating an image, an company that owns the Intellectual Property (such as Disney) can and has shut down selling fanart in the past. But fanart in general poses less risk to IP holders. Not only is it not worth their time hunting down every piece of fanart at a convention art booth, fanart can be viewed as free promotion.
Fanfiction as a derivative work has added risks. If a fanfic author can claim a writer of a book, movie, or series took ideas from their fanfic, it can create huge legal snafus. This has been the bane of fandom past, and it's why multiple places have extra rules for fanfiction.
tl;dr both are risky, but companies are willing to look the other way for fanart in ways they won't for fanfiction. Be safe and don't land in legal hot water!
(See also why you can't make your own Spider-Man comic and sell it to Marvel, and why fan-made games are frequently given takedown notices despite not charging money for them.)

Rename Earth-1719 into Earth-405 with brand new story and this earth version of Young Avengers
Tumblr media
Move the summer been work reworked and tweaked Earth-1719 by retire the name for introducing Earth-405 where take place, in which the universe Young Avengers take place with different members with down ages some characters to made up to younger heroes like Ms.Marvel and X-23 (at least biologically). Earths-405 followed team of young heroes and inspiration by there protégés going operate under watch and trained by avengers to became covert operation and entire in their personal social life. This would focusing on single members of Young Avengers and established characters introduced from start and middle of this earth but need outlines plot and fresh out the story/universe with characters that fans and non-comic book readers could enjoyed and get in easy. Unlike previous incarnations like Ultimate SpiderMan (animation series) would not be focused on SpiderMan and less breaking the fourth deadpool type humor you’re seen shows like Family Guy.
That one of major complaint about series. For this one be it for all ages (between pre-teens and young adult), attending being mature mix with humor that don’t felt lowbrow or cringe from previous shows and comics. Young Avengers in early stage in writing production. Could gives up updates on Young Avengers. It obviously be a fanfic but inspired by Snafu-comics and The Ink Tank. Doing my own version of Young Avengers be felt less fanfic instead be serialized with original takes on stories, characters be same or with major changing and multiple three chapters in one stories felt if you’re watched a episode between three breaks of commercials. It this fanfic series reach success with readers maybe consider going adaptation it into fan-made webcomic.w
Now going introduced members of team equivalent to “Young Justice you’re would seem in only words but pages in future you’re should be watching for.
Spider-Man (Peter Parker)
Speed (Tommy Shepherd)
Shuri
X-23 (Laura Kinney)
Ms. Marvel (Kamala Khan)
Hawkette (Kate Bishop)
Nico Minoru
Miss America (America Chavez)
Don’t forget to follow me and be notification for updates on ”Young Avengers” and don’t know what be updated hopefully weekly. Feel free answering me questions about my own version of Young Avengers about tone, stories, characters and want to know bit more about Earth-405 if following outside canonical marvel comics or made-up own version of that universe. Finally for awhile want take this my one of three secondary blog in new directions and make some changes in future by focusing on original content and posts. Along sneak peek of Young Avenges when give you’re all while waiting for it.
That it all have to say true believers.

First Friday Office Hours
Tumblr media
It's the first anniversary of First Friday Office Hours at @bookswithpictures. On the first Friday of every month, I set up a table at BwP here in PDX and give emerging artists the best, most in-depth feedback on their work that I can.
This Friday, December 2nd, I'll be there, masked, from 4- 6PM. You mask up, sign in at the counter, and show me 6-8 pages of comic book storytelling. I'll give you honest feedback based on my 30 years experience. What works, what doesn't, how to tweak a panel for clarity or impact.
Is this networking? No. I'm not there to hire you, give your pitch to a publisher, or introduce you to other, more famous comics people. I'm just there to talk with you about the pages you've drawn. Like a class in art school, but without the crippling debt.
I restrict this to comics pages- storytelling- because that's what I know. If you're looking for feedback on writing, illustrations, logos, fine art, or poster designs, I'm just not that guy. There are people who know way more about those specialties than I do.
Also, I only do this in person here in Portland- not online. This is what I can take on.
Originals or copies? Copies are better. Portland is rainy! I can make notes on copies directly! And yes, I *can* look at your work on an ipad, but if possible, please print your work out. It's much easier to critique work on paper, and no tech snafus, either!
What does this cost? Zip. It costs nothing. Just bring your pages, your love of comics, and a good mask.

BLOGTOBER 10/1/2021: DRACULA'S DAUGHTER (1936)
Once in a while I pick out a movie about which so much has been said that I feel a little embarrassed pretending I have anything to contribute. DRACULA'S DAUGHTER, Lambert Hillyer's sequel to the 1931 Universal classic, has become essentially synonymous with the concept of the queer-coded villain, and so, many more relevant voices than mine have offered their interpretations of the movie by now. That's your cue to seek out and read any of the many focused LGBT+ considerations of this movie, if that's your bag! Meanwhile...me.
Tumblr media
One of the great taglines of all time.
DRACULA'S DAUGHTER picks up directly from the final moments of Tod Browning's DRACULA, with Professor Von Helsing (sic! I assume this had to do with a copyright snafu) coolly explaining to a pair of bumbling bobbies why they've discovered him in the bowels of Carfax Abbey with a freshly staked Count Dracula. As he begins the ordeal of explaining the secrets of the undead to Scotland Yard, the mysterious Countess Marya Zaleska (the glorious Gloria Holden) absconds with the Count's body. A twilight exorcism-by-fire is meant to free her tormented soul from what she calls "the curse of the Draculas", but as her manservant Sandor (Irving Pichel) grimly affirms, it's all for naught. She will have to go on stalking the night...unless she can find a good conversion therapist.
Tumblr media
Gloria Holden is unforgettable as the unblinking, self-loathing femme fatale fated to carry on her father's feeding habits. Equal parts Glenn Close and Morticia Addams, she lights up the night with her glittering gaze and hypno-ring, which she uses to seduce and destroy unfortunate souls like Lili (Nan Grey). When Lili agrees to strip for an artist's study of her creamy bust, the Countess drains her of more than her dignity, an indulgence that will be Zaleska's undoing; she turns to smug psychiatrist Dr. Jeffrey Garth (Otto Kruger) for his reputed ability to "release the human mind from any obsession", not realizing that he is already aiding Von Helsing's (Edward Van Sloane) case with Scotland Yard. When Garth is called upon to examine Lili, already having vamps on the brain, he puts two and two together about the guilt-stricken Countess.
Tumblr media
Much has been said about Marya Zaleska's apparent craving for female flesh, which is so explicit that it nearly escapes the realm of vampiric metaphor. Her agonized inability to embrace her own outsider nature completes the picture of her queerness, which critic Mark Clark suggests is augmented by Gloria Holden's own ambivalence toward her first starring role. In his book Smirk, Sneer and Scream: Great Acting in Horror Cinema, he remarks, "Her disdain for the part translates into a kind of self-loathing that perfectly suits her troubled character."
Tumblr media
But, for my money, just as much of the subtextual heavy lifting is done by the men in DRACULA'S DAUGHTER. By and large, they are either comically impotent, or virulently misogynist, or both, reminding us that the Countess's female troubles are compounded by her disastrously male-dominated environment. Constable Albert (Billy Bevan) sighs and swoons his way through the discovery of Dracula's corpse, and when Dr. Garth most desperately needs help from Scotland Yard, Sir Basil Humphrey (Gilbert Emery) is cocooned in satin sheets sorting out his stamp collection while his long-suffering butler tries to make him take his barley water treatment. Garth himself is a dyed-in-the-wool woman-hater, who we first find on a hunting trip fantasizing about murdering his female patients: "There are a few birds in London I'd like to shoot, and they haven't feathers either!" His ostensibly romantic relationship with his baroness-secretary Janet Blake (Marguerite Churchill) is more hate-hate than love-hate, and her inevitable rescue from the vampire's clutches is more much dryer and chaster than what a distressed damsel can usually expect. Where Bram Stoker's Mina was torn between her earthly love for her fiancé and the supernatural seduction of the vampire, Garth's conflict is between a patient he sees as a prize guinea pig, and a secretary he'd rather shoot to death...but he needs her to tie his necktie for him, something he is not competent to do alone.
Tumblr media
DRACULA'S DAUGHTER may not compete with the Lugosi classic, but it has separate virtues that make it worthy on its own terms. Vampire narratives are so often driven by romantic longing, but there is little of that to be found here. Our antiheroine is alienated by her own carnal desires, for which she seeks a shrink rather than a mate, and nothing is to be solved by the power of love, so the creature's eternal loneliness has a different character than what we're used to seeing in these gothic fairytales. That makes of this sequel a much colder dish than expected, and personally, I savor its unique flavor.
If you have not yet done so, you can enjoy this misanthropic monsterpiece right here--and I heartily recommend it:

chest + wipe for you know whomst :3
✨🍒✨🍒✨🍒
(chest) — to bury your muse’s head in my muse’s chest
It’s been a long day, a tedious one. Running errands always is, even if it’s their own errands that have piled up because they keep putting everything off for tomorrow, and tomorrow becomes the day after tomorrow, and then it’s a week later and they have a to do list longer than Tyson’s to-read pile in his comic book app. And Tyson loathes shopping, even with the alluring temptations IKEA provides, closets they could hide and do unmentionable things in. He almost gives into the urge once. But by the end the tiredness wins over and they’re standing under a lone streetlight like a beacon from the heavens shining down on the nativity scene. And they’re waiting for a car, they’re waiting for Joe to be specific with his recently purchased SUV to come pick them up because all the shit they’ve bought can only fit in his car. There’s boxes piled around them like a makeshift house. And two people inside the cardboard gates, a tall sleepy and a short sleepy. Tyson yawns, rubs an eyelid, and pulls Sasha to him. Even in shoes she only comes up so high, but this way it’s actually perfect, because she can lean on him, and his arms can go around her and hold her like he’s some kind of foldout bed. He’s that for her always, but here especially, when the waiting goes too long. He yawns again, reflex covering his mouth with his hand, and then it’s back in its rightful place again, stroking the top of her head as he watches blurry figures in the parking lot move around them.
(wipe) — to wipe my muse’s tears away
Treat yourself baby, he’d said. C’mon, you know you wanna. He’d all but pushed her into it, which is how they got into this little snafu in the first place, Sasha calling Tyson not twelve feet from the salon she’d just left from, giving him a minor heart attack wondering if something had happened to the baby when he heard her sniffles. But no, baby fine, it was her, she’d broken a nail. It’d be funny if not outright hilarious if she didn’t sound so upset about it, so of course he went into consolation mode. Drove her back the next day, explained to the nice nail lady at the salon the situation, and would you look at that, she fixed it up free of charge. Nail restored to its shiny, colorful glory like all the rest of them, Tyson was feeling good about that, his smile fading only when he realized she was crying again. Not hard like the day before, but he picked up on it regardless. Was it the wrong color? Did she not like this one? But no, she’s thankful. Or grateful, or something to that effect mumbled, about him. Which is a ridiculous reason to cry, but hey, she wasn’t in her right mind here. He uses the back of a palm to wipe away her tears in less than ceremonious fashion. “You good?” he asks her, then inquires lower, speaking to a tshirt that’s stretched out and has seen better days on her, is straining out holding that bump. “You good too?” Everyone in their party of three is good it seems, they’re free to continue on their way. Make it halfway through the parking lot before he decides to pick her up (getting harder to do as the months progress, but hey, free arm workout). Carrying her across the parking lot to their car because “you’re a goddamn liability and you’ll break another nail, don’t touch the door, I’ll open it for you,” all said between smiles and laughter.

Say you were editor of the Titans books in 1992 when the DickKory wedding fast approaching, would you allow it to proceed as planned or as we have it, if the wedding went awry, would you still had Dick leave the Titans and do his things in Bludhaven etc?
That's hard to answer. I'm all for editors interfering as little as possible with in progress storylines, just stepping in to coordinate or make sure continuity isn't horribly butchered (unless a retcon makes sense and makes things actually better)... But I also know sometimes when we say "editorial interference" sometimes we're talking about the REALLY higher-ups, someone from Warner Brothers, etc. Also, I have to admit to finding things to love about Dick coming back to the Bat Office, too. I manage to find things I love and don't quite love about Titans!Dick and Bat!Dick, same as with DickBabs and DickKory. It's all a big what if. I think the better question might be "what ways do you think DC should restructure so that editorial mandates and snafus don't cripple their storytelling?" (but I'm not an all powerful deity, and at this point, I think that's what it would take to fix things for both big two companies).
Long story short, I'd let the wedding happen, because that makes sense, story wise. That doesn't mean things couldn't happen, later, to have him leave the Titans and go to Gotham or Bludhaven, along with Kory. If a story is well thought out and not interfered with and done by a writer who cares about the character, then wonderful things *can* happen. But all of those have to happen; only 2 out of the 3 can absolutely ruin a story. Comics is built on the corpses of 'could have been' storylines 😔😭
