sometimes a coming-of-age story is about holding your abusive mother as a baby and although you won’t reconcile with her in the present you begin to understand how generational trauma may have affected her behaviour towards you long ago. sometimes a coming-of-age story is also about defeating sea vampire nazis through the power of faith and befriending a communist and a devastating betrayal from your space mentor . and in the end it’s about taking your hair out of the constricting netting that’s been holding it and diving for a swim into the wild swirling waters

MINI-FEST ALERT!
As you may know already, Rose Tyler was born on the 27th of April, 1987. (Er. 1986? I'm not sure, and neither is Doctor Who itself.)
Tumblr media
Can we, as chronic fans of a character who hasn't been on screen for almost fifteen years, let this day pass by without celebrating it??? Our girl turns 37 this year! (or 36, or 38, or maybe even 40+ because time runs differently in pete's world. sigh) ANYWAY what better way of celebrating this day than by giving her all our love via fan creations?
From the moment you see this terribly put-together post until the 28th of April, we will be holding a mini Rose Tyler Birthday Fest!
Same old rules...any medium goes! Fanart can be nsfw! For fic, there is absolutely no minimum word count, (seriously I'd love to see your headcanons, even), and there's no restriction on rating there, either. We will be accepting pre-canon and all three canon pairings from the show; nine, ten and tentoorose! The only* "rule", as such, is that you stick with the theme: Rose's birthday. And even that, you can interpret loosely! Tell us about multiple birthdays, or just one, or about the birthdays she spent without the Doctor and the ones she'll never have to spend without him again.
Tag us @whywhatswrongwithblue and we'll reblog your work!
Happy creating! :))
*Not really sure if this even needs saying anymore, as you can probably tell from this blog, but we're massive fans of tentoo and of rose's canonical ending and would super appreciate all entries being pro-tentoo (i.e, not killing/retconning him!) ❤️

stuff for @spoopdeedoop's starlight strings au that i didn't get around to posting on here
(context for the last one: discord server was discussing how funny it would be if all the doctors just spontaneously appeared in some way that referenced their regeneration story. so ten sleeps for 40 hours straight, they pull eleven out from the ground like a carrot, twelve crashes out of the closet ranting about dinosaurs, thirteen falls through the ceiling, etc)

if i won’t have lost the special interest by the time i’m back at uni and i’d have seen most of classic by then i want to write an academic paper on gender in doctor who. because there is SO MUCH to say about it. thinking about missy’s lampshading of the companion-as-gender in world enough and time. companion is a de facto gender, right? and the doctor is a gender. thirteen is not more feminine than ten or eleven, in fact, she’s emotionally distant and harsh in highly masculine-coded ways and the doctor will always find themselves taking on the masculine role re: the narrative, no matter what gender the actor that’s playing them is. of course amy pond as the ur-example of the companion without agency, treated by the story as a vessel and an object to pass between husband and doctor. then there’s subversion (ace, bill) and deconstruction (clara). martha’s character being simplified in the public consciousness as ten’s tragic rebound, ignoring her doctorification arc. doctorification itself as a transition of sorts. time lords’ gender-fluidity contrasted with their culture’s rigid social norms. cybermen and daleks turning themselves genderless as a marker of dystopian uniformity. the role of river song. rose noble and her magical mystery metacrisis transgenderism. charley sneaking onto the R101 dressed as a boy. ace dressing gwendoline in a man’s costume in ghost light as a symbol of evolution
i swear it could go on forever . i bet when i’ve watched the rest of classic the list of examples would be twice as long, the earlier you look

Random Doctor Who Facts You Might Not Know, Part 48
The Eleventh Doctor and the Fifteenth Doctor once worked together in an attempt to free a woman named Nora Wicker from a time bubble, but before they could do so, Nora confided in the Eleventh and told him she wished to stay. (Audio: The World Tree)
The first alien planet Rose went to was Justice Alpha. Before that, she had only been to space stations and ships. (Novel: The Monsters Inside)
The Eleventh Doctor keeps the Second's recorder in his pocket sometimes. (Novel: Shroud of Sorrow)
Chad Boyle frequently tormented Ace as a child. At one point, he almost hit her with a brick, but he was stopped by an older version of Ace. If he had hit the younger Ace, he would have killed her. (Novel: Timewyrm: Revelation)
There are several academic cities on Gallifrey, including Prydos, Patrexi, and Arcalia. (Novel: The Garden of Evil)
The Oldharbour Clock is a really old clock near the Capitol on Gallifrey. It is intricately decorated with little figures that dance with every chime of the hour. These figures, however, gained sentience and are actually the most intelligent beings on the entire planet. (Novel: The Infinity Doctors)
Lake Abydos on Gallifrey is home to singing fish. Romana's family spent a lot of time here, and she used to swim in the water when she was young. (Audio: Neverland)
After being resurrected, the Celestial Intervention Agency allowed the Master to read up on the Doctor’s past, making him aware of what happened to Lucie, Tamsin, and Alex. (Audio: Masterplan) This also means the Master is probably aware of any major events in the Doctor’s life from before that time as well.
The Doctor once saved Peter Capaldi from a Mandrel and Peter Davison from a Krynoid. (Comic: The Girl Who Loved Doctor Who)
The Eleventh Doctor said that the TARDIS has a GPS with the voice of Davros. (Audio: Trouble in Paradise)
Leela had a sister named Ennia, who was killed by Horda at three years old before Leela was born. Their mother killed the Horda with a knife, the same one Leela carries. (Novel: Eye of Heaven)
Ophiuchus was a Time Lord healer who managed to overcome the regeneration cycle limit on thirteen incarnations. For this, the High Council declared him a renegade, claiming that he had to do things such as vivisection to extend the lives of Gallifreyan criminals. (Comic: Ophiuchus)
Some Time Tots keep rovies as pets. (Audio: No Place Like Home)
Susan was 97 when she applied to Coal Hill School. (Novel: The Time Lord Letters)
Jane Templeton was a trainee Time Lord attending the Academy. She got stranded in Ancient Egypt and lost her TARDIS, which had taken on the appearance of a shabti figure. By the time she found her TARDIS, she was in her thirteenth incarnation, and her TARDIS was so degraded that the Seventh Doctor said it should be euthanized, which would involve flying it into the heart of a star. Since she had impersonated the god Thoth, she was guilty of class 2 intervention, the punishment for which is vaporization. Instead of letting the Doctor save her, she slipped into her own TARDIS and died with it. (Audio: False Gods)

it will always bother me that in the year of our Lord 1963, Susan said she made up the initials for the TARDIS, but that apparently every single other person on her planet and all over the universe for some reason call all of those ships TARDISes. they don’t have another name for it. Type 40 TARDIS. stole a TARDIS. did Susan name all of them? was Susan there at the conceptualization of the first one? why. why-

a batch of assorted ghost au stuff i found sitting in my files:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
self-indulgent crossover with @indigorithmic's (friendly!! and chill) exorcist / private detective oc piper. imo in a world where ghosts and exorcists are a well-established Thing, the doctor would be pretty eager to seek out expertise that might know what's going on with him:
Tumblr media
two sketches are from a variant on the ghost au where the doctor dies during series 3, comes back as a ghost with no memories (as usual), and is eventually accidentally found by martha, who was brought back to earth by emergency program 1 and started working freelance investigating alien sightings. i think while tracking down some sort of psychic trace she ends up building a machine that can pick up the ghost doctor's voice, but she still can't see him. and he still can't remember. yeah:
