SAN MIGUEL, MANILA: ITS CHURCH, PALACE, OLD BUILDINGS AND OLD HOUSES During our Postulancy at the Abbey of Our Lady of Montserrat - Manila, my fellow postulants and I were allowed to visit the different churches in Manila to complete the Visita Iglesia. One of our favorite churches to visit is the National Shrine of St. Michael and the Archangels in San Miguel, Manila. A 12-foot statue of St. Michael the Archangel defeating the devil in the form of a dragon greets visitors as they enter the gate of the church. It was made by National Artist Florante Boy Caedo and was funded by Col. Antonio Cabangon Chua. Cardinal Jaime Sin blessed it on September 29, 1984, the Feast Day of St. Michael and the Archangels. Padre Félix de Huerta, OFM wrote in his chronicles that the town where the San Miguel Church was located was known as San Miguel Viejo. He added that several Europeans have their residences and houses of receation in the town. The most prominent was the Malacañan, the residence of the Governor-General. According to the San Miguel Church's National Historical Institute marker, the original church was built by the Jesuits beside Estero de Tripa de Gallina ok 1603. It became the a parish church in 1611, and it religious religious center of Japanese Catholics in 1615. The administration of the San Miguel Church went back and forth between the secular priests and the Franciscans between 1768 and 1899. It was even placed under the Parish of Quiapo from 1783 to 1797. The church was built on the current site in 1783 after most of the old town burned down that year. It was finished in 1835. An earthquake in 1852 brought down the belfry and damaged the church. Both the belfry and the church were promptly rebuilt. The church was once again rebuilt in 1913, and it remains standing to this day. The church became the Pro-Cathedral of Manila after World War II from 1946 until 1958 while the Manila Cathedral was undergoing restoration. In 1986, it was elevated to the status of a National Shrine. #manilamania #thetimetrekker https://www.instagram.com/p/CFVbQnmBwe-/?igshid=1hcfw2i39jwvo
