Do you have a favorite musical?

If so, what are your favorite lyrics from it, and why?

Is it a surreal mess? Yes! But I love it before everything else.

The lyrics are silly but very clever. Most are at least partly by TS Eliot, drawn from a wonderfully nonsensical book of poems.

I think my favorite song is the Invitation to the Jellicle Ball, neck and neck with Mr Mistoffelees.

My favorite cat is Mistoffelees by a lot, followed by the Rum Tum Tugger. They are in love.

But the part that makes me feel the most in my heart is Grizabella. The only cat I relate to is Grizabella.

Memory is the big number that everyone knows and I do absolutely love it, it's one of my favorite songs and probably the best in the musical as it was before CATS 2019 introduced a new song, but I feel that out of context it simply doesn't have punch. It gets trotted out to showcase a singer's skill, as a bit of a tearjerker if you're a sentimental person. It is so much more than that.

I didn't understand Grizabella properly until I was well and truly an adult and had taken in multiple cats off the street, and lived near a colony, and watched my own cats become frail, which are all painful things in many ways; AND until I had begun to really feel the weight of my marginalization as a disabled person and an ill person, which means confronting almost daily the fact that I am unlikely to come to the sort of end I would like.

Hold on because I'm going to be unhinged about this cat for a minute.

Grizabella is an aged stray, once welcomed, now abandoned and unloved, considered ugly even by others like her (who are shown to supposedly accept differences and value, or at least respect, most everyone...but not her).

She lives in a haunted, lonely state unacknowledged by anyone except to be driven away. She can no longer care for herself, she is filthy and matted and scarred and probably in a lot of pain, she is starving, and she has nothing but her memories of better times, and every single dawn is both a gift and a miserable curse. She gets to remember. She has to remember.

If you watch, Grizabella is onstage a LOT, she's just off in the background, usually poorly lit, where she tries to mirror the dances happening on the main part of the stage, dances she knows because that was once her, there in the spotlight, shining. But now she's in too much pain to dance and her body isn't working right anymore. I have no doubt Grizabella is dying. The question is whether she will get to do that well, comforted and with dignity, or do it badly and alone.

I cannot HANDLE Grizabella.

If you have even the tiniest inkling of love for cats, if you believe every cat's life is worth something, her story should destroy you.

The legendary Jennifer Hudson's performance in the movie brought a really angry and confrontational turn to her, and it was flat out amazing. A rebuke of a performance. It really hurts to watch but it's what the role has always needed. She isn't just weak and sad, she clings to the tatters of her dignity and is angry that the others don't see her as a whole person. Just a miserable shadow to be avoided. A cautionary tale. We are never told what terrible thing she did to deserve her fall, and given that most of the Jellicles are young, I don't know that any of them really remember.

I will physically fight anyone who says she should not have been selected to ascend to a new life. She was the only choice. Even Gus. Even him. He can have his turn next year. Grizabella does not have another year in her.

And I'm going to make some folks mad but I love the 2019 movie (it's bad) and the new song, Beautiful Ghosts, is amazing, and I DO prefer Taylor Swift's version as the movie version is a little more timid (fitting the role and musical way better) but TS fucking BELTS IT and I get chills every time.

The lyrics are incredible and the song is gorgeous, gorgeous. And strung together with Grizabella's song, it finishes the musical in a way that it was a bit unfinished before. It uses an actual full song to connect Grizabella to the Ball and the Choice more directly than any choreography ever did or could:

Victoria, the White Cat and viewpoint character, still almost a kitten, has been dumped in the street and into a terrifying and beautiful new life.

After being swept up into its wonder, she sees Grizabella, utterly rejected, hissed at, made fun of, despised, and aches with the injustice of it -- Victoria was snatched right up by the other cats the instant her paws hit the ground, but nobody will take in Grizabella. Not even her own kind.

Victoria sees how strangely similar they are and feels a kinship that has no pity in it at all, but wonder and respect.

So Victoria sings this new song expressing the first admiration Grizabella has heard in god alone knows how long, reminding her she has had an amazing life worth envy and renown, and she pulls this horrible decrepit old mess of a cat into the Jellicle Ball, where she is FINALLY relieved of her pain.

Like? I'm crying right now?

It isn't a serious musical, but Grizabella's story runs through it like a cold current, something real and terrible, surrounded by absolute ridiculousness. Her numbers are deadly serious, never played for laughs. And ultimately it is her story that turns out to be the most important one, the truest one, and it is dark, and it is hopeful but only in only the most painful and grief-stricken way. She isn't brought back into a comfortable life with other cats to be happy and surrounded by love. She essentially...dies and goes to cat heaven. She embodies hope itself to the others, and her ascension represents a deeply humbling lesson in humility and grace. Her suffering and her ascent represent the possible future of every one of them, and now they have to confront that, and their treatment of her. She was rewarded, and for all their beauty and charm they were not.

Anyway I'm not normal about it.

The lyrics from Beautiful Ghosts that I love are:

Perilous night, their voices calling. A flicker of light, before the dawning. Out here the wild ones are taming the fear within me. Scared to call them my friends and be broken again. Is this hope just a mystical dream?

and

And so maybe my home Isn't what I had known, what I thought it would be. But I feel so alive With these phantoms of night, and I know that this life isn't safe but it's wild and it's free!

Like, come on. It's a lovely song and it took my breath away in the theater.

Ugh this musical touched me as a feral cat girl of 10 and it touches me again as a sad catguy in their 40s. Truly a very stupid work of weirdly meaningful art and one for the ages.

There are much better musicals, but none of them are part of me.

Five Comfort Characters, Five Tags

1. Yuugi Mutou - To the surprise of no one, as I write him here AND cosplay him. Not to mention I draw him so often in my sketchbook. I think I just latched onto him when I was first into the series as a kid and when I found out everything he went through that the DM anime and dub did not cover, I identified with him even more because of my own experiences with bullying. Not nearly as bad as his thank goodness, but bad enough that I needed to see that someone could come through it all and still be so kind. I love him so much, and he’s helped me through the darkest times in my life, re-entering it again when I needed him the most. As much as I did not like how the series ended, in the end with DSOD coming out around the time I returned to the fandom, exploring the character in grief helped me with my own. Cosplaying him at conventions also boosted my self esteem in ways I didn’t expect and it’s my most comfortable cosplay. It’s uncanny, but I notice the difference in how I feel about myself when dressed up, maybe because I was that kid that always admired alternative fashion but was never allowed to experiment with it.

2. Oz Vessalius & Gilbert Nightray - These two are a package deal and I will not separate them. I have cosplayed Oz in the past and he is the first cosplay I put together all on my own for my first anime convention. Again, there are aspects of his character I relate to on a deep, personal level, and I got very attached to him. Both of these guys need hugs. Oz may seem like a brand of mischievous sunshine, but there is darkness and sadness behind it., and his growth as a character is special to me. For Gilbert, it is a similar attachment, and I have RP’d as him in the past in private chats. His devotion to the people he loves is something to be admired, and he and Oz complement each other perfectly.In his words, it is not the light that connects him to Oz, but their shadows. I carried the first two volumes of Pandora Hearts in my bag every day in high school, and these two are on those covers. It quickly became my favorite manga and I still am not over it. Revisiting old AMVs/MMVs send me right back down the rabbit hole of when I first found the series at 17. The art drove me to work hard on my skills in order to do them justice, and the CLOTHES!!!! Just...mmm so gorgeous~~

3. Mistoffelees - I’m a theater kid at heart and it started with CATS. When I was about four PBS aired the 1998 recording in a special premiere and my mom let me stay up past my bedtime to watch it. She put out a mattress on the floor so we could both lay on it, and she was sure I would fall asleep halfway through. I was awake for the entire thing, enchanted, and my favorite was Magical Mr. Mistoffelees. She bought the VHS tape and I played it all the time, fast-forwarding to my favorite parts and spending lots of time trying to copy the dance moves. It’s a show I know a lot of history and random trivia about and I go see it live every chance I get. I love all of the characters for different reasons so I could argue for several of them being on my comfort character list, but Misto is the first I fixated on and it’s no wonder why. A small black cat that sparkles and does magic? What’s there not to love? Especially now that in the updated version of the show he covers himself, and the entire stage with rainbows and the big, plot relevant magic trick has been updated to a more impressive level. Only the strongest dancers are cast to play the role and every one I have seen live nailed it. (Also, he is one of the multiple queer-coded characters in the show and has been the face of all of the marketing since the revival in 2016.) He is another character I sketch a lot, because I love the character design I came up with in my style and would love to write him sometime.

4. Martin the Warrior - The character whose book ignited my love of reading as that was the point I discovered my favorite genre of books. I seem to gravitate towards characters that life is cruel to, but they come through it all and achieve greatness. There’s a reason the Redwall fandom affectionately calls him “Mouse Jesus”, as though there is no organized religion in the books, he is essentially a warrior saint and spirit guardian of the abbey he helped to build. Even with his pain, impulsiveness, and affliction of the Bloodwrath, he is a kind and devoted friend who will die fighting to save others so they may live in peace. He also has a found family that fills me with the warm fuzzies. Even in death, he is there as a friend who call Redwall home, and kin to those who hear the call to defend it. He may be just a mouse, but he never sat idle when there was something he could do in the face of adversity. Even as I revisit the books, and play a TTRPG themed after them, each and every time he makes an appearance I get such a thril! The fact he also offers help in the form of puzzles and riddles is also dear to my heart. I know there is one I can buy that is gorgeously designed, but now that I have a few beginner looms I want to take a crack at weaving a miniature version of his tapestry depiction myself, and I want to make a prop of his sword as well.

5. Matthias of Redwall - I considered cheating again and adding him to Martin’s ranking (because HA if you know, you know) but I decided not to. The book he first appears in was the first published, and though it is different in tone to a lot of the others as the author made some changes on how the world worked, his hero’s journey is one I know like the back of my hand. The animated show that was on PBS made quite a few changes but I still watched the episodes I own on DVD a ton and he just lives in my head rent free as THE Redwall mouse. If I draw a mouse wearing a green habit it’s most likely him. This kid had to work his tail off to become the warrior he was chosen to be by the end and the payoff is incredible, especially when listening to the audiobook (Marc Jacques and his distinct voice acting is a joy to listen to, at least for me!). He’s a freaking adorable, bumbling, ambitious young mouse and reading as he grows with each challenge is a joy for me. I think I enjoyed him even more as a character in the sequel, Mattimeo, because it’s unusual for a middle grade book to focus so much on adult characters--and he is a fully grown adult as he has a son who is coming of age. He grew into his role as Abbey Warrior so naturally and brought Martin’s story full circle in a way I did not realize on my first read and GAAAH I love it so much. I think if there is one thing I am sad about, is that none of the books featured him (or Martin for that matter) in their respective sunset years, which would have been interesting to compare.

Opinions on the SV starter evolutions?

Sorry I'm late! Spoilers under the cut:

I was ambivalent to them but honestly they're growing on me!

Fuecoco's evolutions: Crocalor's little bird nest sombrero is cute and I love the fact that Skeledirge is basically a living keyboard with his bird dancing on his snout to make music! I definitely made the right call choosing him as my starter!

Sprigatito's evolutions: As far as bipedal starters go? Not as bad as it could've been! Floragato having a yo-yo of all things was unexpected in a good way and I've seen people comparing Meowscarada to the Magical Mr. Mistoffelees which is very appropriate imo.

Quaxly's evolutions: Ironically, probably my least favorite of the bunch, but that doesn't mean I dislike them! Quaxwell is cute enough and while Quaquaval kind of weirds me out, I do like how he takes inspiration from other waterbirds besides ducks--indeed, he looks more like a grebe than a duck, which is very creative!

Which character is your favorite and why?

It normally changes overtime, Like I'll be super crazy about a character one day like my mungojerrie high rn and then a Completely different character the next. So, I guess to answer this I'll say the character(s) this happens the most consistently for which are Mistoffelees and Victoria. So, I'll go with them.

Let's start off with Victoria, at first, I didn't actually care too much for her and thought she was a very pretty cat, but I really got attached to her after watching the 2019 movie and hearing beautiful ghosts.( I went quite wild with Head canons from there and got attached to the way I personally see her) while the song is quite condescending towards Grizzabella, I feel like it's almost meant to be. Victoria is described as kind-hearted but naive so makes sense she didn't really think of it that deeply. I think it gives her an intresting flaw I wish we could've had a scene where she realizes the mess up and apologizes too grizabella maybe having the two bound a little more? Overall I just like Victoria whenever she isn't portrayed as perfect, when she's cooky, messes up and allowed to loosen up even If she's a little shy and hesitant to do so.

I think the reason I'm so attached to Mistoffelees is because of how much I like his storyline throughout the show. About wanting the validation from the cats he looks up to such as Munkustrap and in turn the rest of the tribe. He's just a really fun character to watch and think about also I remember my heart flying the first time I heard his "Presto!" so good memory association. or how different iterations and actors of him portray a similar concept. for example, me blabbing about misto warning

Shiki theatre Mistoffelees (from what I've seen) is played a lot more mischievously and playful rather than being very aloof. He's already confident in his abilities as he showcases them effortlessly throughout the show.

1981 Mistoffelees played by Jacob brent (aka what made me fall in love with the character in the first place) is another great take on the character in my opinion he's quiet but he's proud, just the right amount of adorable, kind and slightly sassy.

Zurich Mistoffelees played by Linsday chambers has grown on me a lot, him being mute in my opinion is a great way to make his showstopping moment in "Magical Mr. Mistoffelees" more rewarding. also, him not speaking made room for a lot of expressive moments from the character such as in "Bustopher johns" I just prefer the version of the song where Mistoffelees doesn't sing it.

Revival Mistoffelees is normally played up to be just a nice happy cat. I'm glad he can just let loose and have fun in this version even though most of the time he doesn't have much of a storyline going on.

2019 Misto, Ok I just really like his character arc? and the more I think about it trying to use regular stage production Mistoffelees for the storyline they were doing in the movie would've had him be side-lined a lot until his song most likely kind of like jenny. He's overhated in my opinion and the fics with him are literally my favourite thing ever.

First impression

When you’re a little kid watching cats ‘98, I don’t know how you can sit through the whole thing and NOT decide that Mr. Mistoffelees is the coolest creature you’ve ever seen. I adored him.

Impression now

I still adore him. He’s not my favorite anymore, but come on, it’s the magical Mr. Mistofelees!!! Look at him!!! That’s a friend!!!

Favorite moment

The conjuring turns, but also, that little moment after Victoria’s solo where he has a few lines to himself. The recent tweaks to his and Tugger’s numbers that give more interaction between the two of them are good too.

Idea for a story

oughhhh I haven’t thought very hard about cats stories but I’d REALLY like to know whatever it was that led to the “his manner is vague and aloof” line. What does Tugger know. Was this determined by Misto’s owners? I have so many questions about the lyrics of this song

Unpopular opinion

Similar to the previous answer, I want to see more depictions of him that relate to the song. He’s too confident and comfortable with the other cats in the show. That said, his depiction in the show is a thousand times more pleasant than his depiction in the movie, so I’ll take it.

Favorite relationship

Tugger!!! Coming back to this show and learning that recent productions have made tuggoffelees (almost) canon was WILDLY cool because it’s like!!! This thing I liked as a kid has gay characters!!! It always did but they ramped it up!!! I love this show!!!

Also, the relationship with Tugger is the best way that Mistofelees’ character can match the character in the song. He’s vague and aloof? He’s shy? Well, the changes to the choreography in Tugger’s song is able to reflect some of those things, as Misto largely just follows Tugger around BUT still gets to do his fancy tricks! It also helps set up Tugger’s introduction for him later on!!!

Cats 4/14/2022 in Roanoke, Virginia: My Thoughts and Review!

So, Roanoke itself is about 5.5 hour drive from me. It's a big longer than I'm comfortable driving, especially since I am unable to stay overnight in a hotel in the area due to work stuff. However, with it being so close to my birthday AND knowing this would be my last chance to see the current cast live, I decided to make the drive out.

I had two friends agree to go, one being my best friend who knows nothing about Cats but likes musicals, and another friend who not only loves Cats, but is literally named after Victoria the White Cat. I'll add their reviews at the end!

Act 1

Right away, the second Nick appeared on stage, someone in the audience shouted "FUCK YEAH MUNKUSTRAP" I knew at this moment I was in for a good time.

During Jellicle Songs, my best friend leaned over to me and went "Am I supposed to know what Jellicle means?" I know it isn't part of the show but it made me laugh anyways

The Naming of Cats is much better live. It's one of my least favorite songs/moments in 98, but seeing it live is such a different experience.

Hyla was amazing during the White Cat Solo! When I went to see the show in January, I saw a lot of swings and Gracie was on as Victoria at that one. She was great, but it was such a joy to see the primary cast.

The Rum Tum Tugger is always fun. Obviously, I'm bias here but the energy Zach puts out in his Tugger performances is next level. He got the entire audience roaring. Also, every time he interacted with Misto and Bombalurina I was living!

Lauren during Grizabella almost made me cry. You can tell her portrayal of Demeter is a Demeter who still cares so much for Griz, and seeing her reach out to her and then force herself away from her just made my heart hurt.

Bustopher Jones. My best friend leaned over to me and went "big chungus cat." That's all.

Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer! I saw Allison and she was incredible. Her Rumpleteazers were so cheeky, and her and Max have great chemistry! Also the double cartwheel is back! The audience cheered super loud as they did it too.

Old Deuteronomy. I saw Nick Munk, and he really reminds me of Gruberstrap. He plays Munk a bit more seriously than Devon did, and him and Zach sound phenomenal together.

The Jellicle Ball! It's always so good. Tugger and Bombalurina danced a lot during it, which of course made me really happy. Also seeing Grizabella in the back attempting to dance along with them but being unable to hurt a lot.

Act 2

Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer showed up late for the Moments of Happiness and got a stern look from Old Deut

Brianna Kim's Sillabub voice is honestly adorable. She embodies such a childlike wonder in her singing and I loved it (and so did my best friend, she complimented Sillabub so much after the show)

Gus! Okay, here's the part I really wanted to talk about. The other performance I went too, the audience was silent all through Gus. This audience, however? Wow. Every little gag and joke Jelly and Gus did had the audience laughing. And the Battle of the Pekes and the Pollicles was phenomenal. You could tell John could feel the energy of the audience, and he went all out during Pekes and the Pollicles. It was an absolute riot and I'm so glad I got to see Gus and Jelly get the applause they deserve.

Skimbleshanks! So happy I got to see Chris' Skimble. He radiates JOY.

Macavity. GOD, do Lauren and Chelsea sound incredible together. Chelsea's Bombalurina kills me, her voice is so smoky and deep and also she's hot. Lauren also is obviously inspired by Aeva May in her Demeter portrayal, which I love because Aeva May's Demeter is the blueprint.

Mr. Mistoffelees! What else can I add that hasn't been said- Paul and Zach kill it everytime. Paul clearly loves being in Cats and being Mr. Mistoffelees and you can see it in his dancing and facial expressions how happy he is.

Memory. Probably a moment I will never forget. Taylor Harris' singing is amazing, and right before she belted the climax, me and my friend who knows Cats just held on to each other and sobbed.

The Ad-Dressing of Cats is one of my favorite songs in the world, and they all sounded amazing and I have to give shout out to the booth singers because I know we have them to thank for making the final of the musical as magical as it is!

My best friend who knew nothing about Cats came out of it really liking it! She said it isn't in her top musicals, but she had a deep appreciation for the work the cast puts into their singing and dancing. Also hrt favorite cats are Sillabub and Skimbleshanks.

That's all I have! Sorry for the ramblings- I had some issues with the way the orchestra rushed certain parts, but my criticisms are so miniscule. The show was phenomenal and I'm so glad I got to see this cast live one more time!

Cats Thunerseespiele 2017

This has to be one of my favorite Productions.

This Swiss non-replica is set in an abandoned amusement park and sports vibrant circus punk style costumes. All the characters also seem the sport some gorgeous tattoos which is very cool in my opinion.

Jemima is the one is the front row with the pink wig and this makes me very happy. I love me some pink Jem!

It seems to have some similarities to Tecklenburg in the general Circus feel and some circus tricks/acts. Also in the fact that Grizabella seems to have a sequence with her younger self like in Tecklenburg.

Also Tecklenburg is the only other production i know of that gave Old Deut a staff.

Look as this feral dapper man overseeing everything, I love him!

Yes, worship the sexy red queen. I look at her and for five seconds i question my sexuality. She’s just so fabulous!

Look at them, they are incredible! I don’t know if this is a man or a woman and that makes me very happy. If anyone knows more or can provide some clarification i would be thrilled.

Who ever this is

I have no idea who she is but she looks like a walking Gothic Pattern Wallpaper and i love her.

LOVE! LOVE! LOVE! Look at this feral motercycle cat with their pretty braids/dreadlocks and teddy bear ears. I love them.

Uppast's Cats Tour Comments: Rum Tum Tugger

TUGGER TIME

alright going to say this right off the bat: Zach Bravo is my absolute FAVORITE Tugger. I may do a few comparisons between his Tugger and McGee's Tugger, but that's mainly because they're the two I've seen in person. I'm not bashing McGee's Tugger in ANY way.

First off, every interaction he had with the other cats was perfect. After seeing all the BTS videos that Zach's made on his instagram, tiktok, and other cast members' instagram, it's really obvious that he loves his cast mates a lot, and those relationships translated so well to the stage.

His energy as Tugger was balanced perfectly between "mature, grown-up Tugger" and "little bastard cat man who thrives on chaos". McGee's Tugger was pretty much firmly planted in the "little bastard cat man" category, and while I do love the chaos, having Zach add more of a maturity and seriousness to his Tugger brought another wonderful level to the character.

The way he says "Who will it be?" is less "hi i'm a little shit who wants to cause chaos" and more "hehe teasing big brother time and causing chaos and fun!!"

He was so much fun to watch during his number, purely because of how he interacted with everyone! He was teasing Munkustrap, Jellylorum, and Jennyanydots the entire time, had the cutest little dance with Demeter, and his dance with Cassandra was perfect!

Also just... the chemistry he had with Chelsea during the Tugger/Bomba moments was perfect.

I LOVE HOW MUCH HE USED HIS MANE!!! Literally, he was either shimmying it, touching it, grooming it, or other cats were touching it!!

He probably used the stage the most out of everyone, and was always moving around. He stayed on the scaffolding for pretty much the entirety of "Bustopher Jones", and also used the oven quite a bit!

He and Munkustrap were the ultimate brothers. Tugger teased him so much during his song, but the two of them were so soft during "Old Deuteronomy", standing on either side of Old Deut near the end!!

He also had a really great moment before "Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer", when everyone scatters, just Munkustrap, Alonzo, Tugger, and Bombalurina were left on stage, and Tugger waited for Munkustrap's signal before going off. I love a good Protector!Tugger moment!

Oh my gosh, he was ALWAYS interacting with someone. He had moments with Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer, with Tumblebrutus and George, and also with the oldie squad! He had the most with Mistoffelees, Cassandra, Bombalurina, Demeter, and Munkustrap though, and I loved all of them!

The way he reacted to Grizabella the first time broke my heart, she showed up and he moved behind the bars of the scaffolding, as if he was putting a wall between them, and ugh the angst. The second time she showed up after the Ball, he hissed at her, which also meant more angst.

He just had so much fun, and I loved how he clearly had thought through each of his choices, like "okay, I want to do this, but would Tugger do this?" or "if I have this reaction, does it make sense with everything else?"

Okay, I'm putting this separately: Zach's choices during "Mr. Mistoffelees":

This isn't so much Zach's choices, but Devon and Lauren: While he's introducing Mistoffelees, no one's really listening. I got a really wonderful view of Munkustrap and Demeter, and as he's speaking, Demeter just looks away, shaking her head, and she and Munkustrap start to move off the stage. It was a really great "i know what he's trying to do but it's not going to work" moment, and said a lot about the characters!

Tugger seems taken aback by everyone leaving, so the way he says "Don't scoff!" worked SO well. it's almost like he was pleading with the Jellicles, trying to get them to believe that they CAN bring Old Deuteronomy back, that it will work! I really loved that take on the line, and it makes so much more sense.

He was genuinely SO excited when Cassandra's costume lit up, it was adorable.

I said it before, but during the mirror dance moment, he does copy Mistoffelees, but then he did the silliest little dance like "yes!! everyone's excited!!" and i just... love him so much...

Obviously, y'all know how I feel about the shimmy and the nuzzle, it was wonderful

the "ladies and gentlemen" moment was perfect, he was so hyped up and excited!!

in conclusion, i love Zach Bravo with my entire heart, i'm still reeling from him commenting on one of my posts on Instagram, and this tour cast has become one of my favorite Cats Casts

First of all, THANK YOU!!! I love an excuse to talk about my hyperfixations so truly thank you :D

I’m currently hyperfixated on Cats the musical, specifically the 1998 film but a few other productions as well. I personally don’t like the 2019 movie but no hate to anyone who does. That being said, assume I’m talking about the 1998 film unless otherwise specified

💕 tell us about one of your favorite characters and why you like them!

The magical Mr Mistoffelees, my boy <3 headcanons is the way I show my love to characters and media, and Misto is very Headcanonable™️, heavily because he is magic, it has so much potential for headcanons!

I also have a fondness for mute/nonverbal characters, and while there is very little spoken dialogue, Mistoffelees is one of the more in-focus characters and has proportionally fewer lines. I think that’s what drew my attention to him in the first place. That, and his design being very easy to spot (and cute!) even in the background

I have also come to the conclusion about myself that for me to hyperfixate on something, there has to be a character I can look at and go “yeah, that one’s cishetn’t and autistic” which does in fact apply to him, which smoothly brings me to the next question!

🏳️‍🌈 do you have any headcanons (lgbt, race, neuro etc) that are important to you?

Mistoffelees being gay and autistic are huge comforts to me, being an autistic lesbian myself with not many characters to represent me. There’s a lot of reasons for the autistic headcanon, some of the main ones being his stimming! He has at least two distinct stims in the 1998 film:

The happy arm winding stim

And the anxious ear scratchy stim

There’s also that he seems a bit socially awkward (conveyed completely without dialogue!) and gets excited over things in a way I relate to because I’m autistic. And of course the selectively mute/nonverbal thing, which is also a comfort headcanon.

I also have a general headcanon that neurodiversity and magic are somewhat connected, in the way that magical/mystical cats are more likely to be neurodiverse, which are headcanons I have for Sillabub and Old Deuteronomy. But there are also ND headcanons I have for non-magical cats, like Etcetera and Munkustrap.

Also, there are very few of the cats I look at and think “that one’s cishet”, I have a bunch of lgbt headcanons and I don’t have the time or energy to list them all, but for example Mungojerrie being trans is a big one I’m unwilling to sway on. Reasons being he is often interpreted as a calico cat which mostly ever happens for cats with two X chromosomes, and that I headcanon Rumpleteazer as his identical twin sister, which would mean they have the same genetic structure and therefore the same gender assigned at birth.

💎 are there any fun facts or trivia that you would like to share?

The first thing I come to think of is how many scenes they cut from the 1998 film and how much pain it brings me /lh They at least cut a verse from Jennyanydots’ song and one from Jerrie and Teazer’s song. They also cut quite a bit of dancing out of the Jellicle Ball, and they decided to cut Mistoffelees conjuring turns!!!! Which is like, his signature move!! And those are just the things I know from the top of my head! What I would give to get my gay little hands on those scenes. Jacob Brent (who played Mr Mistoffelees in 1998 and other productions) is our savior for uploading the conjuring turns on his own

I cannot say I’m in the least bit upset about them cutting Growltiger’s Last Stand (although that was due to lack of time and not simply deciding to not include it). It’s a super racist song and I’m so happy it’s not in the production that I love the most. Fck Growltiger’s Last Stand all my homies hate Growltiger’s Last Stand

Flaws of Cats 1998

Cats 1998 is my favorite version of the show and it’s basically designed to be the most watchable version, so it tends to be the favorite of many. But, like every production, it’s not perfect, so I’ve decided to gather a list of imperfections. Some of these are objective problems with how something was done, while others are nitpicks or entirely about personal preference.

I’ll start of with the disclaimer that I love this version, I love the cast, and I don’t think anyone did a downright bad job. Most of the Bad Stuff is less Bad and more Could Be Better.

Anyway...

The continuity editing is comically bad. *Insert teleporting Pouncival comment here*

1998 Tumblebrutus is, and I’m sorry to say this, underwhelming. He’s not bad, and Broadway-based productions give the character more to do than London-based productions like this one, leaving him at a disadvantage, but compared to Pouncival, Plato, and even George, he often feels like “the other boy”. Out of the trio of Plato, Pouncival, and Tumblebrutus, both Bryn Walters and Karl Morgan had played their roles before, while Fergus Logan had not and you can tell. He didn’t seem comfortable with the role. His voice in Jellicle Songs is much deeper than it is later on, so he was experimenting with how the character’s voice should sound between these scenes, meaning that he was probably still figuring the character out throughout filming. It’s an opening night performance, rehearsed but not quite perfected yet, and there was really no time to fix that.

That said, Fergus nails the physical part of the role. He can tumble like a Tumblebrutus should and his ballet during the Jellicle Ball is just as good as Jacob Brent’s is. According to Jacob, Fergus actually had the timing right for the dance while he was slightly off. Fergus is generally at his best here when he’s doing something he would’ve been doing as Mistoffelees on stage.

Disclaimer: Fergus Logan was not the only actor playing a character he’d never played before and these sorts of problems could apply to anyone in this situation, but this is the example I found to be the most noticeable.

Speaking of Tumblebrutus at the Jellicle Ball, the decision to give Tumblebrutus Pouncival’s track during the ball was a bit inconsistent. During the Boys Jump segment, Pouncival has his usual track, though it’s a Broadway-based version of the track. In London-based productions, Mistoffelees and Carbucketty/Pouncival usually have opposite roles in this part. Tumblebrutus comes out in what I usually see as Mungojerrie’s entrance. Then the tom kittens sort of switch out for the Boys Ballet. Having Tumblebrutus as Pouncival during the Cartwheels actually removed Tumblebrutus’ usual track in that segment. They should’ve either had Pouncival do his usual thing here, swapped the tracks completely, or had someone else, possibly Mungojerrie, cover Tumble’s track.

Exotica. They at least could’ve kept her in the ensemble consistently. Or kept a consistent character design. Or given her a better name.

Macavity’s design is too monstrous. It’s established that multiple queens, despite hating him, are attracted to him, so he should have at least a few qualities that the audience could see as attractive, in order for this to make sense. But he’s a big furball who lacks the more human face that the other cats have. He looks and acts like the monster that he is, so Demeter and Bomba’s thing for him, and him being described as “outwardly respectable” don’t quite make sense. He’s supposed to be unkempt and somewhat feral-looking, but they went too far with it.

Lastly, this is not a flaw as much as a personal preference for something other productions have done, but this one didn’t. When it comes to the Mr. Mistoffelees number, there’s a specific version of their dynamic that best highlights Misto’s character development. Throughout the number, though Misto is the center of attention, Tugger is the instigator. When things aren’t quite working, Misto turns to him. Tugger narrates everything.

Towards the end of the number, as Misto gets to work bringing back Old Deuteronomy, he directs a few other cats on how to help him, but he never directs Tugger. He interacts with Tugger as if he’s the one in control here. This is why Tugger can’t be his assistant in the trick. But, after bringing Old Deuteronomy back, Misto has confidence and has truly come of age.

In some productions, this is when he realizes that this is his musical number and he can decide how it goes, so he whispers to Tugger how he wants the number to end. The words Tugger says at the end of the song are at least partially Misto’s suggestion. He has enough confidence and authority to take charge of the number and Tugger does what he asks. He probably would’ve done that before, but Misto lacked the sense of confidence to try.

If you want to see a good example of this, look at the German Tent Tour.

The 1998 production has Tugger come up with the finale by himself, so the sense that Misto has come into his own as an adult isn’t quite as strong as it could be.

Also, they could’ve not removed every bit of choreography where Tugger and Misto touch. That was a bit lame of them.

So tell us about your favorite cats 👀

This isn’t a very specific question so I’m gonna use this as an opportunity to list and explain my favorite characters

1) My girl herself, Grizzabella. Just look at her🥺

I adore her for so many reasons honestly. First of all, I have a soft spot of the “older person who’s been through a lot but still genuinely wants to do good and be accepted” trope. Quite a few of my favorite characters in other pieces of media fit this description. But I also think a part of me relates to her, or at least her feeling of rejection. I never fit in well in a crowd and I’m often outcast and teased. But I’m also a very friendly and affectionate person, or at least I try to be, so I can relate to that desire for acceptance and love.

2) Syllabus/Jemima. For two reason, 1)

BABY SARAH BRIGHTMAN!! JUST LOOK AT HER!! And 2) I love her innocence and kindness. Part of it is once again me relating because I try to see the beauty in everything, especially things people see as ugly. But also, she’s just a sweet baby. I can understand disliking some characters, maybe even Griz in some cases, but I will judge you for not liking this sweet angel kitten

3) Rum Tum Tugger. Man is just such a vibe. Like I want his gender. Plus he cares about the other cats so much it’s so sweet. Plus this scene

4) Mr Mistoffelees. There’s just nothing NOT to love. Perfect boy. That’s an A+ cat right there.

5) Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer. They’re just little shits and I love them. Pure chaos. Adorable, disaster pjs little shits.

6) Victoria and the rest of the kittens. They’re all so cute and sweet and fun to watch. I love the way they interact with each other and the moments when they reach out wanting to touch Griz tug at my heartstrings. I wanna Griz, I wanna hug them, just let all the babies have happiness.

7) Old D. Team Dad #1. He also looks like he gives good hugs. I bet he gives GREAT hugs.

8) Munkustrap. Team Dad #2. I love how you can tell he genuinely loves his family and friends, even though they drive him well up the wall

There probably more characters that I love or will love, but I’m still new to the fandom, so I’ll update this when I have more!!

So this takes place a little in the future of the current rp @thatmysticaltuxedocat-rp is doing, but the idea is already in my mind so-

Celestia was outside of the den, Mr. Mistoffelees had asked her to set outside for a bit so he could tend to his newest litter. They were all cute kittens, but Celestia hated that seemed to take a lot of Papa’s time.

Celestia sat down and pulled her knees to her chest, “Papa said that he would still focus on his first litter, but-”

Mr. Mistoffelees left the den, “Finally got all of them to sleep.” He mumbled. He noticed Celestia and sat down next to her. He placed an arm on her shoulder, “Starshine, what’s the matter?”

Celestia hugged him, “You said wouldn't forget us after you gave birth but you keep focusing on your new litter.”

Mr. Mistoffelees rubbed her back, “Oh, Starshine, we talked about this, I'm never going to forget you and your siblings, it's just newborn kittens take a lot of work.” He nuzzled her, “I still love you.”

Celestia cried, “But you sometimes make me leave so can care for them.”

Mr. Mistoffelees shook his head, “It gets overwhelming caring for kittens, and need space. That's it.” He kissed her forehead, “I’m not replacing you.”

Celestia seemed assured but she still had one more question, “Do you have a favorite kitten?”

Mr. Mistoffelees laughed, “Ah, this old question.” He answered, “Well you see my favorite is.”

oof that is a great question! let me answer your question! it might be long! and this is in no particular order either!

(and a lot of my favorites have connections to my OC Kiki lol)

1. Munkustrap

I just love the calm energy Munkustrap brings to the show and he was the first character I fell in love with. Honestly one of the things I love the most about Munkustrap is how you can tell he really does care for the other members of the Jellicle tribe. You can see it through the way he interacts with others and it warms my heart seeing how gentle he is with the kittens as well! Plus he makes such a great protector for the tribe because he cares about them so much, This is partly why I made my OC Kiki his daughter as I feel he would be the most caring dad in the world and love his kittens unconditionally no matter what happens and always support Kiki. He’d just want what was best for her.

2. Demeter

I love my girl Demeter so much! She is one of my favorite characters just because she really has such a great presence on stage and I love her voice. And I just think she is such a wonderful character. I particularly love her in The Gumbie Cat song and she has great vocals. Plus she is half of one of my favorite ships. I also see her as a caring individual and although she is very skittish and on edge a lot of the time she does care for others. And I thought because she would be mates with Munksutrap that she would take on a motherly role to Kiki and although she would be unsure at first, it wouldn’t be long before she viewed Kiki as her child.

3. Rum Tum Tugger

I mean it is pretty hard to dislike Tugger! When I first started to get into Cats, The Rum Tum Tugger is the first song that I actually really listened to. (on constant loop) and I started to fall in love from there! I love how he always makes a big presence when he is in a scene and I like his cool guy person. But I also like he has that side to him that comes out with Old Deuteronomy and a few other jellicles that he does have a softer side and does have great respect for some others. Plus he is the ultimate hypeman in Mr. Mistoffelees! And as I was developing Kiki I always thought about how Rum Tum Tugger would be that fun uncle to Kiki, he’d call her kiddo, spoil her a bit, always sneak her little treats and surprises when Munkustrap isn’t looking always telling Kiki not to tell her dad

4. Bombalurina

Bombalurina is another one of my favorites. First of all, she and Demeter are amazing in the Macavity number and this is where Bombalurina really shines for me with the performance she gives here. Another aspect I enjoy is her relationship with Demeter, it is obvious in the show that the two of them are close with one another one. I personally headcanon them as sisters and I really love them together. But also I love the teasing Bombalurina and Tugger during his song. The girl really is into him and you gotta love how Tugger acts like a total player around her. Overall, bombalurina is just a great character and I love her so much. And with Kiki she’d be a cool aunt figure to her and Kiki would adore Bomba so much.

5. Mistoffelees

Ok last and certainly not least I love Mistoffelees. One of the main reasons I love Mistoffelees is because he is such an amazing dancer. I used to dance for a while and quit dancing once I graduated high school a few years ago. and Mistoffelees always brings back memories of dance for me. Plus I just love his sass, I mean you’ve got him calling Tugger a terrible bore which always makes me chuckle. Plus there are also other little sassy moments. And Mr. Mistoffelees was the second song from Cats I fell in love with. Plus I just love the ship of Tugger and Mistoffelees so much! And I think Kiki, like her uncle Tugger would be in awe of Mistoffelees’ magic and she would be so happy for Tugger and Mistoffelees when they get together

Things about the creepypasta improv thing my close friend and I have been doing since 4th or 5th grade (maybe longer):

- My character doesn't really have a cp name yet but has been around for 401 years

- My character, when not at the mansion, is roomies with JTK (and he steals cheese its)

- Vivian's (the close friend) character is close to Slenderman and has a older sister bond with Sally

- Aside from the Jeff The Cheeze Itz Snatcher gag we have more running gags

- Such as Masky locking Toby in the closet when he's annoying only to turn around and see Toby standing there.... MENACINGLY (lol)

- LJ punts Mr Widemouth across the mansion weekly

- EJ is no longer allowed to cook for others after the barbeque of 2017. We miss you, Butler Bill

- Tuesdays and Thursdays Viv's character takes pets and children out the mansion for a playdate while everyone else has some fun

- Viv's Hidden Stash of Tuna TM

- My Hidden Stash of Vodka and Rum TM

- My character might have a problem but then again immortals aren't really affected by alcohol like most mortals are

- Speaking about my character: Holy. Pets.

- They have a bunch of guard dogs (despite them all being guard dogs they are pampered like you wouldn't believe)

- Pastas respect COVID stuff. Slender ordered everyone to scatter until it's mellowed out alot. Slender caught it at some point. They say get the vaccine and wear ya damn mask.

- There's a "Community Garden". It's just a few pitcher plants, some Butterworts, a killer cow plant (courtesy of Ben pulling some strings), a small patch of wither roses (courtesy of Herobrine), and a oran berry plant (courtesy of a few poke-pastas), rose bushes, etc

- Holidays are fun too

- Christmas time is filled with my character and Viv's taking Sally, Jane, Clockwork, and Nina out for a "girls" night

- Granted Nina only gets taken along bc despite the love-hate relationship between my character and Jeff, Jeff deserves time away from Nina during the holidays at least

- Also despite Jeff hating Nina he appreciates the knives she gives him (and return he gives her some sort of card)

- Due to staying in the vents constantly and stalking everyone my character gets everyone what they think they like would like

- Christmas lights everywhere. Splendor always gets Offender to put the star on top the comically large tree just bc

- Despite it not being Christmas music, everyone listens to Hotel California by The Eagles

- and watches Christmas movies (what was that Christmas movie with Tim Allen?)

- Everyone plays in the snow. Jeff decides to start a snowball fight and Sally makes a snow man.

- Everyone wears something festive and it's normally an ugly sweater thanks to Trender

- Spiked nog anyone?

- Thanksgiving includes everyone gathering together and having fun

- A small hunting trip is planned instead of a football game (the hunt takes place the day prior bc no one wanna miss the parade)

- Sally's favorite float is the Charlie brown float

- You know how the president pardons a turkey? Slender pardons a victim (and has been doing it since meeting Viv's character bc of a joke Viv made)

- My character makes mashed potatoes or some sort of really outdated dish from the 1700's

- The Slender Bros, Viv's character, Sally, Toby, Smile Dog, Jeff, and Nina all watch the dog show after the parade

- Nina is kinda allergic to dogs and doesn't really like them but bc of her lingering obsession with Jeff she puts up with it

- Offender and Trender argue over what dog they think should have won (funny to watch to grown immortal-ass men argue over this)

- Slender carves the turkey

- The pardoned victim is allowed to stay for dinner granted a majority of memories get changed (not really erased, just changed)

- My character, Jeff, and Ben all walk through the woods before dinner and get fucking plastered (and think no one notices....everyone notices)

- the week of Thanksgiving the tree gets put up (acceptable if it's the week of Thanksgiving, any other time then it's just weird)

- My characters mom, (considered the co-founder of Hell) pops in, steals a couple slices of pie, and leaves

- Halloween is celebrated kind of like Thanksgiving and Christmas

- My character decorates the mansion with various bones

- 31 Days of Horror Movies (at some point it's decided to watch Earnest Scared Stupid and some of the serious dog lovers opt out)

- The Slender Brothers dress up as the three musketeers. Splendor is Porthos, Offender is Athos, Slender is D'artagnan and, Trender is Aramis

- Jeff and my character do a duel costume by dressing of as Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer from Cats (musical not movie, duh) alternatively they dress as Rum Tum Tugger and Mr. Mistoffelees.

- Sally dresses as Carrie or a fairy princess

- Jane, Clockwork, Nina, Viv's Character dress up as four of the five muses from Hercules (Viv changes last minute to a cat due to her character having cat ears and a cat tail)

- Toby, Masky, and Hoodie originally wanted to dress as the three musketeers but after slender took that idea they decide to dress up as separate things. Toby dresses as Masky. Masky dresses as the phantom of the opera and Hoodie is a ghost.

- Smile dog dresses as a hot dog :P

- A small hunting trip is planned and Jane and Clockwork take Sally trick or treating

- Everyone finishes the month with A Night are Before Christmas (a classic)

- Not many celebrate Valentine's day

- It's really only the Slender Bros, Viv's character, My character, Nina, Toby, Masky & Hoodie, and Sally

- and by Sally I mean she just leaves candy from the candy bowl everywhere

- Masky and Hoodie make a day of it since Slender gives them holidays off. They eat cheesecake in the woods and just spend the day together.

- Toby spends the day alone but still celebrates in his own way. Eating waffles.

- Offender (in our improv thing he's not....yeah....he's just a hopeless romantic that does consensual hook ups) and my character spend his their leaving roses out at restaurants and going to bars for hookups. They have a bunch of stuff worked out.

- Viv and Slender spend the day in bed or lounging in the living room watching some cheesy comedy.

- Trender spends the day as a self care day seeing as he's alone at the moment. Every day is self care for him but it's even more on Valentine's Day. He goes all out and even treats himself to a fancy restaurant.

- Splendor likes going to neighborhoods and leaving cute little poems on people's doors then heading to the zoo for personal time.

- Nina harasses Jeff who, in return, leaves the mansion and heads to the apartment him and my character share.

- New Years is something everyone celebrates. While some have resolutions others have new quotas they're trying to meet.

- Sally tries to stay up and watch the ball drop (she's only seen it drop twice before falling asleep)

- My character and Viv's character get shit faced

- Jeff normally sits there with a beer in one hand and Smile Dog beside him

- that's really all that consists of New Years

More about our two characters:

My character:

- a 401 year old demon thing

- in our universe hell is ran by the 7 devil's as well as my characters mother. Hells more of a city than a pit.

- Has lived with Jeff as a roommate since late 2018

- Use to be with Herobrine but broke it off with him for unknown reasons.....they're civil and still good friends. He's one of those people that could make a good boyfriend but is best as a close friend

- On their 400th birthday a crackening happened in Hell that enhanced their powers and they were hunted by Zalgo. Luckily a truce was established.

- Has been by Viv's character side since her characters soul was first created. More in Viv's Character's section

- Y'know those dogs that were talked about in the beginning? They primarily stay at their mothers mansion in Hell.

- Also all cats go to hell but they don't get hurt. They like to watch. Sometimes if you're lucky you might get a celebrity's cat. That's how my character got their lovely (and kinda douchy cat) Delilah. She likes to pee all over people's suits just bc she's like that.

- They were born in 1620 but are progressive

- Still liked fashion through the ages

- Maybe not the health damaging ones

- Is able to fly and teleport but due to back pain and migraines prefers to stay grounded and rarely use teleportation

- Doesn't actually kill much but has had souls sold to them (job as a demon....doesn't really need one though....is Crossroads Demon)

- Had a one night stand with Trender about 240ish years ago

- Does have proxies....it's those souls they take and barter around for

- Souls in hell can be used for currency depending on whether or not they sold their soul

- Anyways, was at some point known for having an obsession with chainsaws and hoodies...still has a bunch of hoodies and a chainsaw but doesn't really use them much (is more of a flannel and gun person now)

Viv's Character:

- her character managed to get everyone's favorite dwarfed rag doll cat from the internet

- Her character use to be with Entity 303 and ended up Slenderman

- that makes two of us who were with a Minecraft pasta and ended up with a slender brother lol

- I think her character is called Kat or KC so for now imma call her character Kat

- Kat has an addiction to tuna and milk

- Also has cat ears and a cat tail which are both very sensitive

- when Kat's soul was created my character was created. Even though Kat has been through many many reincarnations my character has always been alongside her. Even though my character doesn't die they act as a guardian towards Kat.

- Has a tendency to sit up in the cat walks and within the walls of the mansion alongside my character

- Gets lost in the forest from time to time and needs help getting out

- Despite being with Slender she has her own room to store her weapons and stash her plans.

- If I'm not mistaken Kat also was with Toby for a short while but doesn't talk about it much. Imagine dating your ex-lovers boss lol

- Disappears for up to a week sometimes without saying where she's going and when she comes back she acts as if nothing happened

- When both Kat and my character started living in the mansion they shared a room for about a year.

- Kat had a personal garden that was completely wiped out by Zalgo before a treaty was established and she still hasn't forgave him

- The garden mostly had marigolds and a few small plants. The only one that really mattered was Audrey the Venus fly trap.
