After work
Fox Mudler x F!Reader summary: You decide to make the unwinding after work a bit more interesting for Mulder warnings: teasing, mentions of smut, implied smut. Just something short, sweet and fun for the end of the year. word count: 2.2K a/n: this is me trying to get out of my writing/art block. ALSO, first time writing Mulder! Thank you @chelseasdagger for editing this!
Tumblr media
You lay on the small couch in Mulder’s apartment, resting on your side, turned to face the room as the gentle light from the TV shines onto your face. Some low budget horror movie plays quietly on the small screen, but to be completely honest, you don’t pay much attention to it, choosing to have it on as a means of killing time. You usually finish your work before Mulder does, even on the off chance he might leave the office at a normal hour. Killing time until you get to see him in the evening wasn't an unusual thing for you now you didn't mind it.
A cheap gag in the movie makes you sigh quietly before you look away, glancing up at the small window above Mulder's desk. You frown, suddenly realizing the late hour.
You check the time, squinting at the clock on the bookshelf next to the sofa, before glancing at the phone on the desk.
The thought of calling him passes by your mind, but you brush it off quickly. You weren't too worried about him, not today, the case him and Scully have been currently working on didn't seem particularly dangerous or high risk, at least not from what he's been able to share with you over the phone.
The subtle sound of house keys on the other side of the door to the apartment makes you smile, perking your head up and turning to face him.
“Well, well, well…look who's here.”
He speaks first, pretending he wasn't expecting to see you there.
“You mind telling me how you managed to get into my apartment, ma’am?”
Rolling your eyes at the tease, you turn away to face the TV again.
“I broke in using the keys you gave me.”
You explain without taking your eyes off of the movie, snuggling into the pillow harder while he pulls the work jacket off his shoulders and makes his way over to the couch.
“Well, damn.”
He mumbles quietly, his usual monotone voice makes the corner of your lips pull up slightly.
“I need to be more careful about handing out my spare keys, huh? I mean, what is this? It's like anyone can just walk in, lay on my couch and make themselves at home.”
“Oh, anyone?”
You raise your eyebrow, glancing up at him in an accusatory manner.
“Well…”
His lips push into a small pout.
“You got me, I give up.”
You breathe out a small laugh as he leans down, pressing his lips to the side of your head gently before moving away. He loosens the tie around his neck and tosses it off to the side before he unbuttons the top couple of buttons on his shirt.
“So…”
He starts after a moment once you pull your legs closer to your chest to make room for him on the couch by your feet. He sits down, lifting your legs up slightly just to rest them gently in his lap.
“What are we watching?”
He asks, fingers slowly rubbing up and down your calves.
“Ummm…not sure. Killer clowns, I think?”
“UUUuu, spooky.”
Mulder hums, unimpressed, and you chuckle at the reaction. There's a pause and you both actually pay attention to the movie for a short while.
“Aliens?”
You glance over at him, catching the small smile when you ask the work related question.
“No um… no, it was vampires, actually.”
He explains and you nod.
“Real ones?”
The smile widens as you seem genuinely interested. At least somewhat.
“Well…technically, yeah, you could say that but, you know.”
“No evidence?”
He shrugs.
“No evidence.”
“I mean, it's a possibility, right? You've handled cases like that before.”
You state, and Mulder nods, agreeing with you, his hand slowly rubbing over your thigh. He turns away from the TV, now looking directly at you.
“Do you think I should remind you that that is classified government information, you technically know nothing about, huh?”
“Oh, I'm soooorry.”
You talk back, head now propped up in your hand, face turned away from the movie you found yourself no longer interested in watching.
“Guess I just overheard it when you were talking in your sleep.”
“Hey!’
Mulder reacts immediately, and you can't help the laugh leaving your body when he pulls you up and into his lap with a slightly offended expression.
“.... I talk in my sleep?”
He asks, hands rubbing over your lower back while you throw your leg onto the other side of him, straddling his thighs in effect.
“Oh, not at all.”
You mumble quietly, pushing a couple strands of hair that fell forward onto his forehead away from his face with a soft smile, and he offers a small one in return.
“You know what? If I didn't know you any better, I would've said that didn't sound too convincing.”
He points out in the quiet, monotone voice, and you shrug your shoulders softly.
“I mean, I could’ve just read your mind, and you'd never know.”
“Oh, yeah?”
He asks with a slightly raised eyebrow.
“You're changing your confession now?”
He teases in a typical Mulder manner, and your smile grows bigger as you tilt your head to the side, letting him continue after a moment.
“So what-what you're trying to say is I work a case all week, and then I come back home to relax, and now I have another X-file on my hands? Is that what you're trying to say?”
You smirk, glancing up at him innocently.
“Oh, I'm not trying to say anything except that I missed you.”
He smiles so big, his teeth shine in the light of the TV screen.
“Me? You, missed ME?”
You hum quietly, confirming your confession as you rub your hand up along his chest.
“Well, that's good to know. Why didn't you call to tell me earlier, hmm?”
“Didn't want to interrupt you at work.”
You explain yourself, and he shakes his head gently before whispering your name softly.
“You are the only person who I want to interrupt my work, okay?”
His thumb brushes over your cheek, and you lean into the touch, staring into those dark brown, puppy dog eyes.
“Okay.”
“So you missed me?”
He goes back to your earlier point, and you breathe out a small laugh.
“I need to try and remember that next time I'm at the office, huh?”
“I mean.”
You brush your hand over his shoulder and down his arms.
“I wouldn't complain.”
You shift your position in his lap, and he grunts, feeling the weight of your body now directly between his legs, his grip on you tightening slightly.
“Oh, but I know you have your vampires and aliens and things you need to deal with over there.”
You speak softly, your fingers gently tracing over the shirt. Your head tilts to the side slightly as you try to make sure your words actually reach him. His eyes jump around your face as you talk, stopping at your lips for longer than they would in a usual conversation before he tilts his head down, eyes now fixed on the spot where your body presses against him between his legs. His hand moves up your back, pushing at the hem of your shirt.
“Hey.”
You start again when he doesn't respond.
“Earth to Mulder?”
“Hmm?”
He mumbles, questioning what you've just said, clearly too lost in the situation to pay actual attention to what's being said.
“When did you stop listening?”
“What?”
He blinks a couple of times before frowning, offended that you’d question his ability to listen to you…under the circumstances.
“Oh, I actually heard everything, for your information.”
He states confidently, and you raise your eyebrows, doubting his words.
“Oh, you did?”
He nods, slipping his hand right under your shirt, his palm flat against your bare back now.
“Yep, everything, yeah. Loud and clear.”
Still slightly out of it, he nods again quickly, doing his best to sound as convincing as possible despite the evidence you feel, oh so clearly, pressing against your body from underneath you.
“So, what did I say?”
You push.
“You said you missed me.”
He starts, and you can't really argue with that.
“And then you also mentioned how I am the best looking federal agent you ever dated, I'm pretty sure.”
Not giving you much time to disagree, or call him out, he raises you off of his lap, swiftly helping you lay back down on the couch. You lay under him as he leans closer to you, his hands playing with the hem of your shirt, his eyes stuck on yours.
“I don't think I said that.”
You frown.
“But you said you missed me.”
He points out again.
“And you called me an X-File.”
You mumble, unimpressed, and he laughs, shaking his head before it hangs low above your chest.
“I mean, you could argue that was a compliment? Maybe?”
You roll your eyes, a smile back on your face as you decide to let him have it this one time.
“Okay, yeah, that's what I'll do.”
You glance down, slowly raising your knee up, nudging at the bulge in his gray slacks.
Mulder hums quietly, grinding his hips down slightly as a response to your move. His hands linger over your body, one now under your shirt, the other on the side of your neck.
“Yeah?”
He asks, his voice soft, his touch gentle but impatient.
“Yeah.”
“Yeah and-”
He leans down, pressing his lips against your neck, and you tilt your head back slightly in response, a silent invitation for him to continue.
“I think I deserve some extra credit.”
He mumbles, his words breaking up between the kisses. He slowly moves lower and lower down your torso as he pulls the fabric of your shirt up to expose more and more of your skin, until finally pulling the fabric off and over your head. He tosses the shirt off to the side and his lips find their way back to your body, right above the waistband of your jeans.
“Credit for?”
You glance back down, your hands pushing through his hair when he looks back up into your eyes, lost in the moment, in the kisses and in the feel of your body under his.
“Creativity?”
You laugh, head falling back down onto the couch, fingers still in his hair as you feel his lips back on your body.
“Yeah, okay, I'll give you that.”
You purr softly. As gentle as possible, you scratch at the back of his neck, the short hair prickling the tips of your fingers softly. He lets out a satisfied hum, resting his head right below your belly button, facing you with his eyes directly on yours. You push your hips up slightly, feeling his fingers brush over the sides of your body, and he glances down between your legs before turning his head up to look towards your face again.
“Yeah?”
“Yeah, you get extra points, Agent Mulder. Now c'mere.”
Instructing him to move closer to you, you push your lips against his when his face is inches away from yours. He moans into the kiss, and in response you do the same as the kiss deepens more and more. Feeling his touch firmer on your body now, you reach down, palming the bulge through the fabric of his pants. There's a loud grunt, he breaks the kiss, his lips parted, eyes closed as his lips curl up into a big smile.
“Well, good job, me.”
He mumbles quietly, tracing his hand down your body, fingers curling under the waistband of your jeans while his big, brown eyes open and find yours once again.
“I think maybe-maybe I should try to earn more of these points, huh?”
Mulder asks, his thumb rubbing over the skin above your jeans.
“I think you really should.”
You agree quickly, nodding and pushing your hips up slightly at the same time.
“You got any-”
He pauses for a moment, placing a wet kiss on the skin right under your belly button, and you feel the warmth between your legs grow significantly stronger.
“Any idea how I could do that?”
He kisses the same spot again, then moves slightly lower, then lower and lower again before working the zipper open. Slowly pulling the fabric down your thighs, he brushes his lips over the newly exposed skin, and a moan slips past your lips.
He chuckles loudly at the sound, shaking his head when you look back down with a soft smirk.
“Oh, Agent Mulder, I think you know very well how you can do that.”
“Oh, yeah?”
He asks, in a lighter tone this time.
“I mean, I'm pretty much just guessing here, I-”
He quickly glances between your two bodies.
“I have precisely zero idea what I am doing here right now.”
You scoff loudly, pushing his face away and letting your head fall back onto the couch again.
“Too much sarcasm, too little action there, Mulder.”
You squirm impatiently under his body, hungry from the promise of pleasure.
“Copy that.”
He nods quickly, the big smile never leaving his face for even a second before he buries his face between your legs.

my thoughts on the field where i died, as promised!
first of all, i just have to say, this episode is so visually stunning. glen morgan/james wong + rob bowman behind the camera is a dream team, and i’m inclined to be a bit more open to the content than i probably would be if it came from the perspective of another writer.
the criticism that i hear the most regarding this episode is that it implies that mulder and scully aren’t soulmates, but i've never interpreted it that way
the field where i died opens on an FBI raid of a cult in tennessee headed by vernon ephesian, where mulder intuitively leads the team to a bunker housing ephesian and his six wives, including melissa riedal-ephesian.
throughout the investigation, FBI focus turns to uncovering the location of the cult's weapons, in a search to find enough evidence to charge ephesian. otherwise, he will be released in 24 hours.
throughout the 24 hour holding period, multiple interrogations of melissa reveal not only the depth of the connection that mulder feels to her, but that she seems to exhibit multiple personalities, each with differing information about ephesian's crimes.
Tumblr media
in what is possibly my favorite frame of the series, mulder suggests that these alternate personalities might actually be melissa recalling her past lives, and suggests that she try regression hypnosis, with the goal of revealing where the bunker holding the weapons is
Tumblr media
this is where this episode starts to lose people, as both mulder and melissa undergo regression hypnosis, and both claim to recognize each other as their spouse in each previous life
Tumblr media
however, as the wikipedia summary points out, the recollected histories all end with the two being separated.
melissa describes watching mulder's death during the civil war, while mulder describes witnessing her being taken away (by CSM?? i'll admit this is a weird one, folks) during WWII, with mulder having the line "we're always taken away."
Tumblr media
also a frequent flyer in the past life regression session, is scully, who appears in each of mulder's previous lives, an occurrence he describes as souls coming back "different, but always together, again and again, to learn"
Tumblr media
personally, i don't think that mulder and melissa being married in each life, or even the emotional connection that they have to each other, is implying that they're soulmates or supposed to be together.
i think that the repeated theme of mulder and melissa being separated and mulder and scully "coming together" in each life is the more meaningful note from morgan and wong. and more than that, i don't think that any of this matters at all.
Tumblr media
if you recall, the goal of the regression hypnosis in the first place was to find the bunker. to locate the weapons, to charge ephesian, and to hold the cult members in custody.
ultimately, the regression doesn't assist in the investigation at all, and a planned FBI search of the grounds finds every member of the group dead in a mass suicide, including melissa.
the stand-out of this episode, however, comes before the revelation of the ending.
Tumblr media
"dana, if early in the four years we've been working together, an event occurred that suggested or somebody told you that...we'd been friends together. in other lifetimes. always. wouldn't it have changed some of the ways we looked at one another?"
following mulder's regression, the episode pauses. and mulder asks scully (calling her by her first name, i believe for the first time since season one) if having known they were fated to come back together, to always be friends, would have changed things between them.
Tumblr media
this is a conversation that is ongoing throughout the series, the question of fate vs. free will, and as the incredible @scullysflannel has written about before, mulder loves free will.
while fated past lives might be the MOTW, might be the supernatural phenomenon that we're focusing on, that doesn't mean that the episode, or mulder, comes out on the side of fate.
fate can't find the bunker. fate doesn't save anyone's life.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
frequently, when this debate is brought up, as is scully's involvement in the x-files.
scully was assigned to the x-files, she was positioned there by CSM purposefully, and they both know that. but she has chosen to commit herself to the cause, and specifically to mulder. she sought him out when they were shut down, she describes herself as having "followed" him, and she continuously fights to stay involved in his journey.
Tumblr media
this is something that mulder rebels against from time to time, feeling responsible for the things that have happened to her since she became involved in his quest
Tumblr media
and feeling that there's more for her than what a life with him offers.
in fight the future, he tells her to leave and go be a doctor. in requiem, he laments "everything that's been taken" from her, including her health and chance at being a mother.
over 15 years later, in nothing lasts forever, he admits to the scenario he envisions, a world where she "left that basement office" and married some brain surgeon, became everyone's boss at the FBI, her family and health and babies intact.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
regardless of the underlying level of guilt and responsibility that he always feels when it comes to the losses that scully has suffered
Tumblr media
he needs this life to have been her choice, for her autonomy in that decision to have been intact, for a life with him to not have been her irrevocable, and somewhat tragic, fate
Tumblr media
and so in the field where i died, shortly after exploring the connections of his past, he looks up at her and asks...if this were all because we're supposed to know each other, would it have been different?
Tumblr media
and she tells him, no.
the way that in fight the future she tells him that she'll be a doctor, but her work is with him. the way that in requiem she told him that she won't let him go alone. the way that in nothing lasts forever she told him that she doesn't begrudge him anything, that her "leap of faith forward" is the future she wants with him.
Tumblr media
maybe they have been friends in every life that they have ever lived. maybe they are fated to always come back together, to always learn from each other.
but fate doesn't save the day, fate doesn't show you what you need to find.
Tumblr media
they choose each other, and more than anything else in this episode, that's what he needed to hear.

The First Time, Every Time: The Jersey Devil
Rated X / 2470 words / Posted on AO3 / Tagging @today-in-fic
She asks Rob to drop her off at the Hoover building instead of her apartment, and when he pulls up to the curb she immediately unbuckles her seatbelt and tugs on the door handle to discourage him from getting out of the car. She suspects that he might try to kiss her, and the idea makes her nose wrinkle. She can already hear Ellen asking her what’s wrong with him, why she isn’t interested, and she’s not even sure what her answer will be.
On paper, he’s perfect. He’s the kind of man her father would like to see her dating, save for the fact that he already has one marriage and a child under his belt. Nothing he said or did during their date offended her or gave her reason to think that they might not be a good match, but despite all that she just found the entire evening…painfully boring. She surprised herself when her reaction to Mulder paging her in the middle of their meal was relief rather than annoyance.
She makes her way towards the basement of the Hoover, her heels ticking loudly against the linoleum and bouncing a clatter of sound through the deserted halls. The soft glow of desk lamps illuminate otherwise darkened rooms here and there—other lonely souls avoiding the reality of solitude with work—but for the most part the building is empty. The relative stillness makes her realize that the two glasses of wine she downed to make Rob’s monologue on shared custody more tolerable have left her on the edge of tipsy, which feels like an inappropriate state to be in at her workplace. She feels the distinct flutter of excitement mount as the elevator lowers her into the bowels of the building, and brushes away the nagging worry that Mulder will find her late-night arrival odd.
Her lingering crush on him is inconvenient, mostly because it makes her second guess herself and worry about what he thinks of her more than she’s comfortable with. Missy used to tease her mercilessly about her unrequited fixation on boys who would never like her back: the captain of the football team, the student body president, her chemistry T.A. Being the girl who is smart but not sexy, cute but not pretty, a great friend but not girlfriend material, is a truth she has carried with her into adulthood. And here she is again, ditching a man who is well within her league and actually interested in her in order to spend time with a man who will never see her as anything more than a colleague.
That’s not to say she wants him to, of course—she has already thoroughly learned her lesson regarding mixing work and pleasure. There’s just something primal about wanting a person you are unrelentingly attracted to to see you in the same way, even if you never intend to act on it.
She arrives before his office door, pink-cheeked and inexplicably nervous, and raps three times with her knuckle.
“It’s open,” he calls out, and she pushes the door just wide enough to poke her head through.
Mulder is hunched over his desk, head raised expectantly. When he sees her, his eyes narrow and he glances behind him at the clock on the wall.
“Scully, what are you doing here? What happened to your date?” he asks, and she feels a flush of embarrassment.
“It’s, um—we were finished. I mean, it’s over,” she stammers awkwardly as she steps the rest of the way through the door. “I just thought—I wasn’t sure if you might still be working. If you might need my help. With the case,” she finishes, turning her back to him briefly as she hangs her purse and mouths oh my god to herself at her own lack of eloquence.
When she turns to face him, she finds that he’s now sitting back in his chair, eyebrows raised and mouth slightly agape. His eyes flash down to her feet and then back up her body, and when they land on her face he looks away. Reflexively, Scully looks down at her outfit to see if she spilled something on her shirt, then touches her hair in case it’s fallen out of place. Everything appears to be in order.
Mulder clears his throat and picks up a sheet of paper from the desktop.
“Of course, I could always use your help. Take a look at this drawing based on the description from one of the eyewitnesses,” he says, and Scully walks around the desk to stand beside him.
The drawing is rudimentary, almost childlike, depicting a distinctly female form that resembles an ogre. Scully cracks a smile.
“This is a bit different than your typical fare,” she jokes, then turns to look at him.
She finds that his eyes are already on her, lingering somewhere around her waist. As before, he sees that she’s looking at him and quickly averts his eyes.
“Sorry,” he blurts out, busying himself with organizing the persistent mess on his desk. “You look—sorry if I made you uncomfortable.”
Scully frowns and looks down at her outfit again. Ellen had helped her pick it out, and she felt comfortable and confident in it all evening, until now.
“Do I look silly?” she asks self-consciously, smoothing her hands over her hips.
“No!” Mulder says, too abruptly, snapping his head back over to look at her. “No, not at all. You look great. You look amazing, actually.”
Scully smiles demurely and looks back to the drawing. “Thank you.”
“Not that you don’t normally look great,” he continues, rambling nervously. “But your work suits are decidedly less…fitted.”
He stops talking and Scully slowly lifts her head to look at him. He’s cringing, the fingers of one hand resting on his temple in an attempt to shield his face. Meanwhile, she can’t keep the smile off hers.
“I made it weird, didn’t I?” he asks, stealing glances at her.
“No, you didn’t make it weird,” she assures him, turning to rest her hip against the edge of the desk, her confidence restored.
Mulder pivots his chair to face her, and while his eyes are on her face she can sense that he is still gawking at her from his periphery. She feels warm and a little scared, but also excited.
“So, how was your date?” he asks, and she pretends to examine the drawing again, using her own peripheral vision to watch him raking his eyes over her body.
“Fine,” she says, disinterested.
“You gonna go out with him again?”
She shrugs, then sets the drawing back down on the desk.
“Maybe. Maybe not. I haven’t decided.”
Mulder stands abruptly and his chair goes skittering across the floor until it knocks up against a metal filing cabinet. Scully flinches, but her reaction is cut short when he steps up behind her, so close she can feel his pectoral muscles pressing into her back.
“See?” he asks, reaching around her to trace his finger along the curved lines indicating breasts on the drawing. “It’s female.”
“Compelling,” she attempts to say dryly, but her voice catches in her throat.
His other hand comes to rest on the front of her hip, and she freezes as her heart begins to race. She should tell him to stop. She should leave. But she doesn’t want to.
Mulder stoops a little, and she feels the heat of his breath near her ear, and then the rush of a deep inhale.
“You smell good,” he says quietly, and she squeezes her thighs together.
“What are you doing?” she asks, just as quietly. Some part of her is still afraid that she’s misreading the situation.
“Do you want me to stop?”
A pause.
“No.”
His arms go around her waist, pulling her flush against him, and she feels the firm ridge of his erection press into her lower back. She’s terrified, exhilarated, in utter disbelief. She feels as though she’s outside her own body, watching from above as she covers Mulder’s hand with her own and pushes it down her belly and under the waist of her pants. She would never do this. Never. But somehow she is. Mulder makes a little sound somewhere between a moan and a sigh, then brings his other hand in to undo the clasp on her trousers. They fall to the floor, puddling around her heels, and all that covers her is the lace bodysuit that snaps between her legs. None of her panties were practical to wear beneath it.
“God, look at you,” Mulder mumbles, mostly to himself, as he leans over her shoulder to look down at her body. He leans away for a moment to get a look at the back, and she feels her cheeks warm, remembering that it’s a thong. “You’re gorgeous, Scully.”
She can feel how wet she is, just from the knowledge that he wants her. He palms her breasts, then sends his hands lower. Down and down, following the lace fabric between her legs. He hums, and she knows he feels it too. She startles as she hears three quick pops, and then feels cool air on her vulva as he unsnaps the body suit and exposes her.
“Oh,” he says, feeling her bare skin beneath his fingertips. “I thought you’d be wearing…sorry.”
“It’s okay,” she breathes out, trembling as his fingers follow the seam of her leg and slide past her vulva on one side, and then the other.
“Okay?” he repeats, inching closer to her opening.
She snakes her arm behind her back and rubs him firmly over his slacks.
“Okay,” she says confidently, and from there it unravels at a breakneck pace.
She watches from above as he strips off his belt and pushes his pants and boxers down to the floor. She watches him fold her in half over the side of his desk, then drop to his knees and push his face into the valley of her ass cheeks. She feels his tongue, hot and wet, prodding at everything he can reach, and just when she thinks she might come, he stands up and runs the head of his cock along the same path.
“You’re sure?” he asks through gritted teeth, and she pushes her hips back against him, taking him in halfway.
She would never do this. Not with her partner, not in his office, not with the door half open, not without a condom. She would never, and yet she is. All she can think about his how good it feels to be wanted, to be fucked with so much vigor. She steals a glance over her shoulder to see his face, to see the way he’s looking at her, and she finds him slack-jawed, his dress shirt bunched up under his armpits so he can see the place where he’s slipping in and out of her. He catches her looking and holds her eye, increasing the snap of his hips as he bumps her higher and higher with each slap of his thighs against hers. Her eyes slide closed, and a wash of pleasure spreads through her limbs, gathering in her pelvis and shattering. She bites her lip to stay quiet, and Mulder grunts when he feels her, pulling out soon after and stroking himself until she feels the hot spill of him on her lower back.
She’s panting, still floating in the middle place where she doesn’t have to think about what she’s just done. And then she hears the elevator ding.
They both freeze, waiting. There is the distinct scuff of shoes on linoleum, and Scully stands too quickly. Her head spins and Mulder grabs her elbow as she tries to steady herself on her high heels, only one of which is still on her foot. They each scramble back into their clothes, and she stuffs the tails of the body suit into her pants as Mulder shoves his shirt back into his slacks. By the time the interloper makes it to the office door, she’s already beside the coat rack, swinging her purse over her shoulder.
“You must be agent Scully,” says a friendly voice, and she turns to see an elderly man pushing a custodial cart, his bushy salt and pepper eyebrows lifting to afford him a better view. “You finally hung around late enough for me to meet you.”
The man smiles and Scully does her best to return it, though her stomach is doing adrenaline-fueled backflips.
“Scully, this is Sam,” Mulder says hoarsely, and she nods and offers her hand.
“Nice to meet you, Sam. I was actually just on my way out,” she says somewhat curtly, then hurries down the hall toward the elevator.
By the time she hails a cab and makes her way back to her apartment, there is already a message waiting for her on her answering machine. She knows it’s from him. She undresses right there in the hallway, frowning at the stain on the back of her shirt, as she hits play and listens to messages from her insurance broker and Ellen, asking how her date went.
Hi Dana, it’s Rob. I just wanted to say that I had a great time tonight, and I’d love to take you out again. You have my number, give me a call when you’re ready. Take care.
Delete.
The next message starts with an agonized sigh.
Hey, Scully, it’s me. I, um—fuck. I hope you’re okay. I’ll call you again when I get back to my apartment.
The message ends, and she plays it again, though she’s not entirely sure what she’s listening for. On her third listen, the phone rings, and she snatches it up off the cradle a little too quickly.
“Hello?”
“Hey.”
There’s a long pause. Scully looks down at her naked body, and the soiled body suit she still holds in her hand.
“It’s okay, Mulder. I’m fine,” she says, and she hears him let out a relieved sigh. “I think maybe I had a few too many glasses of wine at dinner,” she adds lightheartedly, and he chuckles.
“I think maybe I was staring at that drawing a little too long,” he jokes, and she gives him the courtesy of a laugh in response.
“Maybe just forget it ever happened, huh?” she suggests, wringing the bodysuit in her hands.
“Yeah, probably for the best,” he agrees.
Another long pause.
“Goodnight, Mulder.”
“Night, Scully.”
She’s moving the phone away from her ear when she hears him speak again.
“What was that?” she asks.
“I was just saying—I just wanted you to know. You really did look great tonight. That guy is lucky he got to take you out.”
She feels herself smiling, knowing that Mulder was certainly the lucky one of the two tonight.
“Thank you, Mulder.”
“Goodnight.”
“Bye.”

Twenty Questions for Fanfic Writers
Tagged by the wonderfully kind and incredibly prolific author @baronessblixen. Thank you!
I am the_eternal_optimist on AO3. I know that confuses people!
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
23, my favorite number
2. What's your total AO3 word count?
351,187. Wordy girl.
3. What fandoms do you write for?
The X-Files exclusively.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Throwing Good After Bad (my baby, my love)
In These Silent Days
Loving Me Takes Patience (this is a surprise to me)
Next To You
Right on Time (really?!? I love all my stories ofc, but this might be my least favorite haha)
5. Do you respond to comments?
I try to. I really love engaging with the people who write kind things on my stories.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Oof. All of my stories are incredibly angsty, but all of them have sugar-sweet endings. Maybe Distraction, only because it might be my only fic that doesn't end with sex??
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
All of them have happy endings. Perhaps Throwing Good After Bad has the happiest ending, just because it's is the angstiest, most violent, most difficult of my stories.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Oh yes. A lot, actually. When I was writing On Marriage about revival MSR, I received death threats for characterizing Mulder as depressed. Someone went to my personal social media accounts and started making fun of my child (a BABY) over this. It's why I got off of Twitter. I very nearly quit the fandom over it and some very kind people rallied to keep me going.
Other than that big one, I get the occasional rude comment. Honestly, they bother me a lot. I go back and forth about continuing to write fanfic because of it. We all write for free and for the love of the characters--why is someone being critical?? (That's where I'm currently at now, and why Edges of the Night is on hiatus. I just cannot with the negativity in my ask box all the time because people are mad the story isn't progressing the way they want it to).
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
I do. I don't love writing smut and I find it the hardest part of writing. But I LOVE reading it and I love what it adds to a story.
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
No.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
God I hope not.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
I'm not sure. I don't think so.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
No, but I'd love to work with someone else :)
14. What’s your all time favorite ship?
Mulder and Scully
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
Right now, maybe Edges of the Night? I will probably finish it because I have it fully outlined, but I dread having to deal with my ask box/messages if I keep writing it.
16. What are your writing strengths?
I'm a pretty empathetic person. It's easy for me to get in peoples' heads and figure out their feelings. Writing and resolving angst is probably my biggest strength.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Phew. I find humor really, really hard. I'm not a funny person and I have a hard time making my characters funny. Mulder requires the occasional dose of humor, and that's always super tricky for me. Also smut.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
Maybe!
19. First fandom you wrote for?
X-Files. Cold is the Night was my first fic ever, and I was 3 months postpartum then. It was such a nice experience getting out of the baby mindset for a while to write that.
20. Favorite fic you’ve written?
My loves, my babies. Probably Throwing Good After Bad, Cold is the Night (because it was my first), and Yours and Mine (This Is Our Time). The latter is a fave because it has two of my original characters in it, Gemma and Emry. I've written an original novel about them. They are my true babies.
I don't know who to tag!! @thursdayinspace if you want!!

Those Two Were Made for Each Other
I have heard a view from a few people that Adrinette aren’t interesting because we know from the first episode that they are destined to be together, and we’re reminded repeatedly that they were ‘made for each other’. Basically, they're so inevitable that it's boring. I guess this is why there is so much fan fiction about other pairings.
I disagree. It's true that it’s okay for Adrien and Marinette to end up with other people - sometimes you think you’re in love and that love passes or changes into a different kind of love, and being with someone else is another kind of happy ending.
That said, the ‘made for each other’ trope is a standard found in thousands of romance stories, not just ‘Miraculous’ - and when done right, I absolutely love it.
To give a personal example: when I first heard my husband speak, without even seeing him, I thought, ‘I need to know this person.’ I couldn’t tell you why. I knew he was ‘the one’ almost immediately. I spent months thinking he reminded me strongly of someone, but I couldn’t place who - then realised what I was experiencing was that feeling you hear about in stories, like you knew each other in another life. I have no solid beliefs about such things, one way or the other, but I definitely had that feeling. And the more I learned about him, the more I caught myself thinking he had actually been made for me.
But that didn't mean everything was instantly perfect for us. 'Inevitable' love definitely happens in real life, but it's still fraught with challenges / points for growth.
I love the way Adrien and Marinette keep running into obstacles, and how they overcome them - how they each learn from one another and grow together. The inevitability may be there, but it’s all about the timing. Sometimes you might be ‘made for each other’ but it’s just not the right moment, and that’s what we’re seeing in ‘Miraculous’.
Thinking of another love of mine, in the manga / anime ‘Inuyasha’ he declares that Kagome was ‘born’ to meet him and he to meet her - but they had to wait 500 years to meet and then learn more lessons together before they were both in a place where they could be equal partners. Likewise, Adrien and Marinette have been on their individual paths, figuring themselves out, and can only come together when they have worked things out enough to be equal partners. If they come together too soon, the relationship will be unbalanced and unhealthy.
So it's true that with such romances there might not be the surprise of who they end up with...but that's not the point of that type of story. The joy lies in watching two very flawed (i.e. normal) people learn their lessons and grow, separately and together. It's in watching the friendship blossom and unfold, so that when the romance finally happens there is a solid foundation to carry the couple through all of life’s ups and downs. Think Mulder and Scully.
Destiny can be real - it’s just not always a smooth ride. And all of that is exciting.

What @jewish-mulder wrote today about Mulder’s desire for family made me want to write a little more about it, too, as it’s one of my fave topics.
Tumblr media
In my eyes Mulder’s most compelling and consistent motivation and arc throughout the series is his desire to repair the family that was broken when he was a kid. I think the show is best when Mulder is focused on this, and worst when writers lose sight of this as a drive for him.
In the beginning of the show this is still very literal; he is looking for Samantha. It’s his defining quest. It’s who he is.
In the middle of the show, when his search for Samantha becomes increasingly muddied and his relationship with Scully starts to evolve, he begins to explore other ways his family might look — other ways an adult man might have a family. He has that conversation in Home, we see him with Emily, there are several experiments in domesticity and family life in the sixth season with varying degrees of success.
This culminates in his Amor Fati dream sequence — a domestic suburban life with Diana and kids AND Samantha. This ep foregrounds just how much Mulder has possibly thought about or desired satisfying family relationships. Although at the end of Amor Fati he seems to have to choose to forsake that comfortable life to live the life he’s supposed to, he reconnects with Scully in the final scene in an affirming, quasi-marital way. Moreover, his commitment to his quest is symbolized by a small boy on a beach he’s depicted as playing a kind of paternal role to. I see Amor Fati as an important link between Mulder’s original quest (to repair his family by finding his sister) with his later life quest (to repair his family by finding his son).
In the later seasons, especially after the death of his mother and the resolution of the Samantha arc, Mulder’s need to repair his family finds a new focus in his need to protect Scully and William, and eventually on his need to find / protect William. Even in IWTB, when he is also motivated by wanting to solve a crime and do his work again, he’s experiencing conflict because he knows Scully represents his family life and the rift with her is painful. (But I also think IWTB suffers from not having this Mulder family healing motive more integral to the story.)
In the revival, I love his line “what am I if I am not a father?” because it plays perfectly into this arc. But it also definitely felt abrupt because the groundwork hadn’t really been laid in regards to his feelings about William. I wish this desire of Mulder’s had been put more in the foreground. The show was playing too many coy “who’s the daddy” games in season 8 to get into Mulder’s feelings about fatherhood, and then they didn’t completely explore them in the revival either, always turning first to Scully’s feelings about motherhood. But I would argue it makes perfect sense for his character to be fixated on it. If I were writing a final movie to tie up the show (something I wouldn’t actually do to GA lol), I would focus it on resolving that arc for him.

Twenty questions for fanfic writers
Tagged by the wonderful @baronessblixen !
Thank you for tagging me! 💕
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
3
2. What's your total AO3 word count?
22,718
3. What fandoms do you write for?
The X-Files
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Movable Forces
Liberating the Mirage
Shadows and Light
5. Do you respond to comments?
Always. I still check every time I get a comment whether the commenter might have mistaken my fic for another story and they meant to comment on the other one. I’m definitely going to say thank you to everyone who took the time to leave a comment.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
I don’t really think any of them ended with an angsty outcome.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
They all ended happily so far.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
I haven’t. And I hope it stays that way. That’s not an experience I need to have.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
I haven’t. I’m not a huge pwp reader anyway so I doubt that’s something I’ll ever do. I’d like to be able to write a good smut scene though one day.
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
I haven’t written any.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I know of.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
No, I don’t think so.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
I haven’t.
14. What’s your all time favorite ship?
Mulder and Scully (MSR)
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
A fic that I’ve had in my head for now 27 years. I wish I could just sit down and write it.
16. What are your writing strengths?
I’ve been told I’m good at writing atmosphere and settings. I have to trust them on that as I have no way of looking at my writing objectively.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Overthinking. I’ll plot and plan and rethink and do yet another round of research—only to start the whole outline over again. I seriously need to stop thinking and just start writing.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
As in the characters speak a different language? I haven’t done that so far but I think I’d ask a native speaker if they could look over it.
Or as in writing in a foreign language as an author? Well, it’s intimidating and a bit scary but there’s nothing I can do. I’m not a native speaker so I either have to suck it up or stop writing.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Actually written the fic down? The X-Files. Written stories in my head? Probably Nils Holgersson when I was three. 🤣🪿
20. Favorite fic you’ve written?
All of them.
I’m tagging @scullyswifey @amplifyme @randomfoggytiger @msrafterdark and everyone who wants to play.

20 questions for fic writers
tagged by @thewolvesof1998 thank u bud i’m procrastinating packing and this was fun
1. how many works do you have on ao3?
seven!
2. what’s your total ao3 word count?
129,484 which is a fake number to me
3. what fandoms do you write for?
nothing has made me as insane in my life as network television procedural drama 911 on abc, so
4. what are your top 5 fics by kudos?
you can start a family who will always show you love
let the world have its way with you
my hearts over-pumping and your mouth is an ambulance
like a dog with a bird at your door
i like the summer rain (i like the sounds you make)
5. do you respond to comments? why or why not?
i try very hard to because they make me so happy and it’s unbelievably kind of people to take the time to leave them!!! However i sometimes leave it too long and then worry it’s weird to reply after like. a month. which as a fic reader i wouldn’t give a shit about so idk what my problem is!!!! i will reply i will just maybe take a hot sec to do it
6. what is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
i don’t have any i’m a happily ever after or bust kinda guy in my own head if nowhere else…… angstiest is probably the sound of love astounds me if only because it ends post-feelings realisation but still pre-relationship
7. what’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
they’re all so happy omg. i will say with great personal bias it’s my heart’s over-pumping but also i have. a sequel in the works….
8. do you get hate on fics?
no people have been very very very lovely but also sjjsjsjs i’ve not been here super long. the funniest comment i’ve gotten was on my first fic where someone was like i liked this but it is jarringly inaccurate as mcdonald’s in california doesn’t have a veggie burger option 😭 i cried laughing im so sorry to u americans. pls petition your local mcdonald’s to stock the mcplant it slaps
9. do you write smut? if so, what kind?
have written two e-rated fics….. it’s very fun but i don’t think i’m very good so i’d like to practice actually (maybe some sexy prompts after i finish the bed-sharing ones?) just the regular kind for now like i love buck and eddie desperately and am myself into a million things but i don’t know how kinky they would actually get in my own head. so just a little gross with it for now i guess
10. do you write crossovers? what’s the craziest one you’ve written?
nope!
11. have you ever had a fic stolen?
nope

no that would be SICK. @alliaskisthepossibilityoflove is podficcing bucket list fic which is so very cool of her!
13. have you ever co-written a fic before?
no omg i don’t know how y’all do it i’m bad at group projects but also this sounds soooooo fun. if also deeply stressful
14. what’s your all time favorite ship?
if that’s synonymous with most likely to get you institutionalised, uh. gestures around us. otherwise mulder/scully and i am just now right as i’m typing this realising i’ve never ever in my life actually read x files fic what the fuck. also steve/bucky but i haven’t read fic since 2017 probably
15. what’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
listen i have not written a word for x files au past that one snip i shared forever ago. i want to soooo bad i’ve talked about it to some of you very rabidly but. it does not want to be written and if it did it would have to be so fucking long which is very daunting to me. not saying i’ve put her in the ground yet but. we might need some necromancing
16. what are your writing strengths?
i think i’m pretty good at writing in character? mostly? sometimes i struggle with buck just because i think we’re very similar and i project a little and then have to go back and fix it lmao but for the most part i think i’m good at that! and i have a lot of fun writing dialogue
17. what are your writing weaknesses?
plot!!!!!! and pacing!!!!!!!!!!! also my inability to write non-linearly omg if i get stuck i just get Stuck i can’t jump ahead
18. thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
oooh i love it and would love to include more than the teeniest bits i have but i’m so conscious about it sounding natural and not stiff to people whose language it actually is (shout out and a million kisses to @eddiebabygirldiaz for fixing the spanish in i love you like a dog!!!!!)
19. first fandom you wrote for?
911 babey!
20. favorite fic you’ve written?
my heart’s over-pumping and your mouth is an ambulance !!! not just because it was the first fic i posted after joining tumblr fandom but. idk it is so so so special to me like it makes me so happy and when i think about it i’m like. hey u wrote that. good for u my dude. and also maybe i just associate it with meeting a bunch of you whjsjssjsj
tagging @callaplums @eddiebabygirldiaz @housewifebuck @rewritetheending @try-set-me-on-fire @onward--upward @anxieteandbiscuits @devirnis @athenagranted if anyone wants to do this i’m nosy soz if you already have !!!!

(press you to) the pages of my heart
four: "come here. let me fix it."
a steggy friends to lovers au (also on ao3)
They were going to be late. Even for them.
(Though Steve would swear up and down it wasn’t his fault. Peggy would swear that he was lying.)
“It’s basically the same costume, anyway. How are you still not ready?”
“I had to send Tony an angry voice note first,” Steve shouted from his bedroom. “Really, it’s his fault we’ll be late.”
Peggy tapped their new and improved badges against the kitchen table. “Pepper’s a natural redhead. It makes more sense for them to be Mulder and Scully. Also, I somehow managed to make new badges, find realistic neuralyzers, and fix my costume before you tied your tie.”
“Well, I got into an in-depth debate with both of them over who deserved a quote-unquote ‘couple’s costume.’ That ate up some time.” Steve walked out into the living room, his eye roll audible across the apartment. “They both had lots of unsolicited opinions, so you’re welcome for sparing you from that.”
“My hero,” Peggy scoffed, grabbing their drinks and dropping next to Steve on the sofa, as he tied his shoes. “Hopefully the party will still be going when we get there.”
Steve sent her an incredulous look, and they both laughed. “Yes, right, fine. It was impossible to even think that with a straight face.”
“Sometimes I still feel hungover from their 4th of July party.”
“Ah yes, the Steve Rogers Birthday Bash, T-M,” Peggy said, holding up her hands in brackets to showcase the trademark with the aplomb it deserved. And because he always glared at her when she did it.
“Yeah, yeah, hilarious. So funny. I’m dying of laughter.” Steve pushed himself to his feet and pulled Peggy up to hers too. “Are you ready, Agent P?”
“What are you saying, Agent S? Don’t I pass muster?”
He gave her a once-over so quick she might have been insulted, if the warm weight of his gaze hadn’t pinned her in place for those few seconds. Her breath caught for an embarrassing moment as his eyes returned to hers. “You look beautiful. And deadly. Perfect, as always—except your tie is crooked.”
“It is not.” Peggy had no idea whether that was true—Steve’s compliments had thrown her for a loop, and recalibrating herself to focus on what he was actually saying was taking longer than it normally did.
He set their glasses on the coffee table and pulled her to their entryway. “Would I lie to you?”
“Yes,” she retorted, but unfortunately her tie was, in fact, listing to one side. “I swear I had it sorted—it must have gotten bored waiting for you to be ready too and decided to relax.”
Steve snorted as she loosened the knot and began to loop the fabric over itself again, but no retort came. He just watched her hands in the mirror as she pulled the long end of the tie through and tightened the knot. But once again, it hung slightly off to the side, and she groaned at her reflection. “These things are bloody impossible. I don’t know how you wear them every day.”
“It just means I have a lot of practice. Come here,” he said, dropping his hands to her shoulders and spinning her around. “Let me fix it.”
Peggy considered the possibility, with Steve’s knuckles brushing against her neck as he re-knotted her black tie, that she was dreaming. Or that she had taken complete leave of her senses. She and Steve were so often in sync—and naturally so, without any conscious thought behind it—that when they weren’t, when they seemed to be in the midst of wildly diverging experiences of the same event, Peggy felt unmoored. Speechless, even. How else could she explain Steve’s efficiency, his apparent immoveabiity, while she was left breathless at the sweep of his hands across her collar? And how was she meant to deal with this new reality, the one where she and her best friend were horribly, perhaps permanently, out of sync, and one wrong word or move could tear everything down?
Steve, oblivious to Peggy’s personal crisis, stepped back and placed his hands on her shoulders again. “There,” he said, a soft smile on his face. “Perfect. As always.”
Peggy placed a hand over the knot and cleared her throat. “As are you, Steve,” she said, relieved her voice stayed steady. “Now, let’s go save the universe. With tequila shots, preferably.”
He laughed and ran his hands down her arms, before taking a single step back. “Yes, ma’am.”

When do you think Mulder and Scully first started dating?
this ask has been sitting in my ask box for over a year because when i got it simply couldn't answer it because i'm shit at remembering timelines. but now that i am getting along in my rewatch i think i have an answer
the short answer is: i think mulder and scully started dating in season 6
but this is the internet so you're gonna get the long answer as well
I think that during the season 4 cancer arc they both realize that they have feelings for each other
throughout season 5 they become aware that the other has feelings for each other but they don't address it. i think that explains a lot of the flirting and a lot of the awkwardness.
Then we have fight the future and i mean... their feelings for each other are basically an open secret now, one that they not necessarily talk about (yet) but they almost kissed for gods sake (or actually kissed if you believe the alternate version ;)
I've been trying to pinpoint the exact moment/episode where they started dating but it's haaard! (on that note i wanna add that i'm not sure they actually went out on dates, it doesn't seem like them. when i say they started dating i mean that some things developed that were more than friendship and that they maybe also talked about their feelings and everything)
however, i think i narrowed it down to a time between Triangle and Dreamland. Mulder's love confession at the end of triangle wasn't really successful but maybe mayyyybe it changed something in them. Also the kiss in triangle makes me believe that he wanted to kiss her AT LEAST ONCE in his life. On the other hand, that kiss could be interpreted as "i kissed you before and it was so good that i need to do it one last time before we might never see each other again"
Dreamland then we have the moment where Scully says "I'd kiss you if you weren't so damn ugly" and it gives me definite vibe of them being more than friends. I think that maybe they are not exclusive yet, or haven't talked about it but it was implied. I base that on Scully's reaction when he sees Fletcher flirting and hooking up with the assistant. Idk the whole ep, especially the evening in Mulder's apartment makes me believe that something happened between them.
Once we get to Rain King i am 100% sure they are dating even though they deny it to the others. They might not be sleeping with each other yet, because they seem to be very adamant about that but their relationship has definitely changed and i think they are exclusive by now.
anyways, that's my theory about their dating timeline!
thanks for asking :)

Fic Writer 20 Questions
I was tagged by my beloved @frostbitebakery: thank you so much, my friend!!!
1.) How many works do you have on ao3
56
2.) What's your ao3 word count?
301,664 words
3.) What fandoms do you write for?
So far, the MCU, Star Wars, and Top Gun.
4.) What are your top five fics by kudos?
Call Me By Your (Pet) Name (MCU, Sambucky)
Tactical Engagements (Star Wars, Codywan)
Citation Needed (MCU, Stony)
Helps to Relieve My Mind (MCU, Sambucky)
Good Soldiers (Star Wars, Codywan)
5.) Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I do, yes! Sometimes it takes me a little while to write back if things in real life are hectic, but eventually I do, because I love chatting with readers about what they noticed in a story and what I was thinking about/working on while writing.
6.) What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
I have never written what I would call an unhappy ending. But sometimes what we know about the canon ending can still make the ending of a fic bittersweet, and that's true of a fair number of fics I've written. I think the two fics that leave canon angst most fully on the table are my MCU ficlet A Stitch in Time, which is about what else Steve might have done while returning those stones, and my wee Star Wars piece Yes, It Feels Like That, which is a moment with Leia's grief during ANH.
7.) What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
I swear: I used to write plenty of fics that were happy all the way through! That happens a lot less frequently now. But Right on Time is just about the happiest ending I could give to a post-war Codywan, and my Sambucky fic Pumpkin Spice and Everything Nice is (to me) maybe the funniest fic I've written.
8.) Do you get hate on fics?
I've been very lucky with readers who are largely very generous.
9.) Do you write smut? If so what kind?
I am a relative newcomer to writing smut, but I have dabbled, yes. I'm not sure what kind of smut it is. Feelings-forward, I guess?
10.) Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
I think the only thing I've written that could come close to being classified as a crossover was my very first multi-chapter fic, Should You Choose to Accept It, which included characters from both the mainstream Avengers and Agents of SHIELD and mashed up the plots of Iron Man 3, CA: TWS, AOS Season One, and Mission Impossible 3.
11.) Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I'm aware of.
12.) Have you ever had a fic translated?
Not yet!
13.) Have you ever cowritten a fic before?
Yes! The Stony identity porn/professor AU fic Citation Needed was a collaboration with the incredible @festiveferret, and it is the most fun I've had writing fic.
14.) What's your all time favorite ship?
Cannot pick a favorite, but my first OTP was Mulder/Scully, and they will always have a special place in my heart.
15.) What's a WIP you'd like to finish, but doubt you ever will?
God what a painful question. 😅 I am a stubborn bastard, and I don't know if I've fully admitted defeat on any of my WIPs, even the ones I've neglected the most. But the WIP that's probably been waiting for my attention the longest is the sequel to my Stony fic Three Little Words; or, Five Times Steve and Tony Didn’t Actually Apologize + One Time They Did, which I cannot abandon or scrap for parts because I'm really attached to the bits that I have written, but which I haven't been able to make progress on for a long time. Bug me for snips about it if you like: I would love to be able to share what I have so far.
16.) What are your writing strengths?
A borderline aggressive amount of figurative language, narrative beats that feel layered, and I think I have a decent ear for dialogue.
17.) What are your writing weaknesses?
I'm so, so, so inexpressibly slow, and I also build up increasing levels of anxiety about WIPs when I'm not getting outside perspectives about them, so I find it nearly impossible to write anything longer than 20k.
18.) Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
I have experimented with this a little bit in the past, and I'm currently trying it again in a WIP in a language I'm not deeply familiar with, which is nerve-wracking. But I think it can be so effective when done well, and I'm excited to keep growing in that area.
19.) First fandom you wrote for?
Stony in the MCU: a missing-scene fic from Endgame
20.) Favorite fic you've ever written?
I love all my children equally, but my Codywan fic Recollection is probably the fic that felt most ambitious to me at the time that I wrote it: memory-related temporal shenanigans, surreal scene changes, some heavy psychic territory, and my very first smut scenes. I'm proud of how many new things I tried.
----
Open tags for anyone who would like to play!!! This was very fun: @ me with your answers if you'd like to join. <3<3<3

I'm not sure if this has been done before, but can you talk about what you think Diana did to Mulder in THAT scene from Biogenesis and how it would have affected him down the line 👀
honestly…i don’t know that i see much point in speculating. i think what i really wish was focused on more is her intent and her mannerisms.
@somethinginthestatic has a great response on that scene where they say:
mulder didn’t call her to get him from the hospital...he didn’t invite her to bed. he didn’t tell her to make herself at home. she did that herself because she had no respect for his boundaries, and she wanted to take advantage of the situation to the best of her ability.
this has always been diana's MO: she knows what's best. she controls the information. she's "anticipating."
(you can find my diana masterpost here but i go into this a little bit in terms of her character's introduction in the end)
what makes biogenesis the end all be all of her character to me is the progression: it's the one/two/three/four step of
1/ mulder collapsing in the stairwell, and krycek finding him there
2/ scully calling the apartment and diana answering while he's in bed, saying that mulder had called her to come get him...something that we know is a lie because we watched the syndicate (via krycek) take over the situation. and we further know it's a lie because scully fucking CALLS it a lie to diana's face, later, in the hospital.
SCULLY: Why were you with him last night?
DIANA: He called me. I found him in a university stairwell. He could barely speak. He said I was the only one who'd believe him-- about an artifact.
(SCULLY stares at DIANA.)
SCULLY: You're a liar.
this establishes a dynamic of control and power (something that diana has always held in her relationship with mulder, past and present) from the beginning of the situation, because it establishes an unreliable source. mulder's incapacitation and inability to clarify the situation leaves room for the syndicate (now via diana) to hold complete control over the flow of information.
ultimately, it's diana's hubris ("he said i was the only one who'd believe him") that exposes her. mulder would never call diana first for help, but scully might not be sure of that at this point in their relationship. she's insecure around diana, and has felt that he's chosen diana over her in the past. but she's able to confidently stare her down and call her a "liar" when diana says that mulder came to her for belief, said she'd be "the only one," because scully knows that's not true, and that he would never say that.
3/ now, in mulder's apartment that night, diana calls CSM and tells him that mulder had called her in "distress" and that she'll be staying with him until she "finds out."
this is when she strips her shirt off and goes back into the bedroom.
like i said...i don't know that it matters to speculate. i will say, we've seen her respond to vulnerability with sexuality before (she kisses him in one son when he was literally in her apartment like "lol i think everything i care about is futile and i should actually just give up")
but what does matter is the tone, and the nature of her allegiances.
to bring it back to the post i linked up top:
she was doing it to manipulate the situation to her advantage, and to delude everyone involved into thinking that she was somehow his significant other and caretaker, when really, she didn’t care at all...she wasnt feeling welcome she was staking her claim and it was disgusting and not at all consensual
i don't actually need to know what happened in that bedroom to know that the woman is fucking nasty, because we watched her throughout the entire arc. she's calculated and she's opportunistic and she's manipulative. there's literally no outcome that changes the fact that her first instinct when mulder is 100% physically and mentally debilitated, is to call the man who tortures him and tell him. is to strip her clothing off next to him.
(now, there are script pages you can find of a deleted scene here, where mulder realizes what she's doing, refuses to go to the hospital with her, and she tazes him. i see a lot of people say that they wish the scene had been left in so that people would "really know" how bad diana is, but personally, i think it works better between-the-lines. there is definitely enough subtext to infer that this is the dynamic, even without seeing it explicitly)
4/ the next time we see mulder after diana's phone call and disrobement in his apartment, is screaming in a padded room in a psychiatric hospital. does this feel alright to anybody!!!! is everybody else not unbelievably disturbed!!!!
specifically, he's screaming for scully.
("he called me he said i was the only one who'd believe him" my ass)
diana uses this to inquire with scully about the case that they were working on, and the artifact. she offers her "help" on this case (one that we know the syndicate has information about, through krycek's manipulation of skinner) and cites her background of "previous work on the x-files" (once again, she stakes a claim. just like in the end, the x-files are something she has involvement in. something she helped start. she was the original partner. except now, it's to gain access.)
scully tells diana to fuck off but they actually should've let her kill her
in the final scene of biogenesis, scully finds a bug in the x-files office. she then calls the doctor who was involved with the artifact, only to hear a gunshot, as the camera pulls to reveal krycek standing over the doctor's body.
the season ends on a resurgence of syndicate control: diana has mulder trapped and impaired. CSM is always watching, the basement office is once again under surveillance. just like how it began, with mulder being found in the stairwell, it ends on krycek finding the fragments that the doctor had held.
to answer your question about the impact of that scene, it's so much larger than whatever happened after the cut. it's the history of the years that mulder spent with diana when he was younger. it's the structure of power. it's the exploitation of vulnerability: both in diana's violation of mulder, and in krycek's manipulation of skinner. it's the information at the center, and what they'll all do to get it.

Hi there!
May I ask a few writing questions (which, might sound like I’m actually trying to demand more Henry fics, but I swear are genuine questions, although I would always welcome more Henry fic):
(1) Creatively, what inspires you to create a universe with full storylines from beginning to end (like, say, the Dryad fics, or Waters of Babylon/Petrichor/Singing of Mount Abora VERSUS creating a universe (like with the Henry universe) and keeping it to out-of-order ficlets? Is it the different categories that inspire you differently (Dryad is family fic, Waters of Babylon through Abora are UST to RST, Henry are Scully/Other)? Is it because of the labor involved?
(2) In stories like the Henry stories, do you have a timeline set in your mind of where each ficlet takes place, or do you write without a timeline in your mind? Is it easier or harder to write without a timeline in mind? I have a Master document where I try and place your ficlets (both Henry and non-Henry) where they might sort of fit based on the details you provide but there are some where I just don’t know and just organize them by dates of publication, but it kills me when I don’t know what YOU, the author, intended when it’s your universe/your mind I’m eagerly entering and it made me wonder how/if dates/eras/season timelines, etc ever float around in your mind? Or, the decision-making process for why to sometimes include them, and sometimes not.
(3) For people like you and the Penumbras, Prufrock’sLoves, of the world, etc — you’re clearly gifted at writing, and I assume writing is an outlet of a sort for you. How do you contain that, or give that gift an outlet, during periods where you step away from the fandom and not write for months/years? I ask this as someone who does not have a gift or anything I’m especially good at (which is fine! I lead a full life regardless). I mean, take Henry! The Henry universe haunts me (in good ways, of course). At any given time. During a meeting at work, or while shopping for something that triggers XF thoughts and then I wonder about whether Scully and Henry finally parted ways on the best of terms so that Scully and Mulder can get back to making love inside a car in the rain guilt-free. (haha) And this universe isn’t real! And I didn’t write it! And… it still takes up time sometimes in my head. Wouldn’t this haunting be multiplied in yours since you’ve created all these universes? Are they always in the background of your mind? Do you compartmentalize them? Do you know the ending of the Henry universe, etc?
Basically, what happens in the mind of creative people? How does your brain function?
Weird, super big question, I know, but MAN, I will forever be sorry I missed the ATXC days, or the Livejournal days where I can dig up author postings where they provide more details about their stories/processes.
I just have so many questions for you guys!
Thank you for alllllll you do for the fandom.
First of all, thank you so much for this ask. It still blows my mind that people receive happiness from a hobby that brings me so much joy and relaxation.
I miss the ATXC days as well, and especially LiveJournal. The PornBattles on LJ, ironically, taught me to write.
1 - It’s really hard to say. A lot of my fic is inspired by gaps or frustrations created by 1013. On the one hand Mulder and Scully are these deeply complex people with nuanced backstories and on the other hand…??? David’s wedding ring stunt or Gillian giving Scully an affair with a married professor. Dryad came from a frustrated place that is due in part to Chris seeming to think that you can either be a parent or a complex individual. Plus it was fun to write that autopsy.
Henry was created by an ask that I loved because Scully DOES deserve better but also I want her with Mulder and I wanted to explore that conflict and make a reader feel it.
2 - Oh my gosh that is an amazing compliment! I don’t really have a solid timeline, I’m afraid. I am truly, truly absolutely shit at the WIP life. 🙃.
3 - I remain blown away by this praise. My career shift has allowed me to have a lot more creativity, though not writing per se. Writing is my favorite thing to do. I am a scientist at heart and I love cooking and baking and animals and fashion and home decor but I am most myself when I am writing. I’m usually thinking about writing, even when I’m not actively doing it. And I confess sometimes it is very strange he to be a Serious Adult with a Serious Job who is also running an internal monologue like “would uni-era Mulder thing vagina or cunt or pussy or some secret fourth thing?”
How does it end with Henry? She stays with him. Of course she stays.
Thank you, kind and sweet anon. You are a gem.

The tonal shifts of ‘Wynonna Earp’ never fail to whip lash me with it’s back and forth drama and comedy.
Especially in the 4th season where they just drop f-bombs like it’s nobody’s business even in scenes where it’s not even necessary and not expected.
For example: You have this scene in the final episode of the show, ‘Old Souls’, where Waverly and Nicole are Mulder and Scully-ing with investigating Waverly’s haunted wedding dress. Finishing off each other’s sentences, seamlessly bouncing off each other… and you can see exactly why they’re getting married.
Then suddenly Nicole drops an f-bomb out of nowhere. I was like “Well, that didn’t happen in The X Files. That I can recall...” 😂 The scene goes like this:
WAVERLY: “My purgatory historical kills file actually has a buttload of weddings that ended in bloodshed. When your town has forty times the murder rate of a normal borough, you don't always connect the dots.”
NICOLE: “Here's another one. 1968. The bride axed her groom to death on the foot of the chapel right after she'd-“
WAVERLY: “-Just axed her family to death? Then killed herself?”
NICOLE: “Slit her throat.”
WAVERLY: “With the axe?!”
NICOLE: “Wanna see her beautiful wedding dress?”
WAVERLY: “Ooh, wait, don't tell me. Vintage lace, inlaid sapphires in a heart?”
NICOLE: “Bingo.”
WAVERLY: “So, we know the dress is haunted, so it's gotta be the dressmaker, right?”
NICOLE: “There's an old wedding announcement. Check this out.
*sits next to Nicole to look at the laptop*
‘The bride will be wearing a creation from Cursey's Bridal Boutique, designed by Ms. Brigitte Hogback.’”
WAVERLY: “That's definitely the weirdo who sold me the dress. Also!
*runs back to the investigation board*
First wedding massacre, 1922. Ah! A Miss H, left at the altar, killed her guests.”
NICOLE: “Well, that is a terrible way to be dunked on.”
WAVERLY: “Awful enough to want to destroy every future wedding in town?”
NICOLE: “Baby, if you left me at the altar, I would fսck shit up. I might kill Nedley.”
WAVERLY: “Nicole!”
NICOLE: “I'm kidding. I think.”
WAVERLY:
*gets all flirty, walks back to Nicole smiling*
“What else would you do to keep me around?”
For a moment it was like watching the The X Files but I’m fairly certain there were no f-bombs in that show. I mean from what I’ve seen of it I hadn’t heard any. But ‘Wynonna Earp’ just drops f-bombs every other scene.
It just completely took me out. In a very funny way. But yes, Waverly and Nicole were very Mulder and Scully in that little scene. It was adorable to watch how they were just in the same mental space one moment and the next things suddenly got spicy between them. I’m the same. Mental stimulation gets me going. If someone can stimulate me mentally, they suddenly have all the power to stimulate me sexually. Intelligence is sexy. Especially when it’s two females.

20 fanfic questions
thanks for the tag @randomfoggytiger!
1. How many works do you have on Ao3?
95.
2. What’s your total Ao3 words count?
368,619
3. What fandoms do you write for?
The X-Files, Star Trek: TNG, Star Trek: Picard, the Star Trek novel-verse, and I just posted a fic for The West Wing
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Platonic Procreation, Eden, The MSR Files, Mother Knows Best, and Though the Heavens Fall (also I need to mention my current WIP Security Questions bc it's only three kudos away from a tie with fifth place!)
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Most of the time! I usually respond to friends/ people I know well, or if someone pointed out something specific in my fic they liked. And I responded to every comment made on my West Wing fic so far bc I want the fandom to notice me😅
6. What’s the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
lol I don’t write many fics with angsty endings (I do like writing angst sometimes but I need things to end happily😅) but I guess this would be Baby Blue, If I Could Only Break the Sky, or When We Were Whole (not sure which one would be the most angsty)
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
so many! lol but I wanna single out Coda bc it was my attempt at wrapping up the mytharc and giving Mulder and Scully a happy ending with William (and giving Samantha’s storyline some actual closure lmao) and I think I did a decent job of it🤗
8. Do you get hate on fics?
I did get a hateful comment on a fic not long ago (ironically, it was and still is my most popular fic by almost every metric so someone was clearly jelly lmao) and I’ve had a couple of comments in the past on different fics that weren’t quite hateful but more like critiquing/nitpicking character or writing choices.
9. Do you write smut?
no absolutely not never ugh
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
I don’t think I’ve ever written one! But I have ideas for TXF/Star Trek and TXF/SVU crossovers that I might write someday if I ever find the time/energy/inspiration😅
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
I don’t think so but I hope not!
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
No idea!
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Yes! The gang and I have co-written quite a few fics, which can all be found in this collection🤗
14. What’s your all-time favorite ship?
MSR of course!! But I will always have a soft spot for Riker/Troi and joshdonna is beginning to take up more and more space in my brain lmao
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?
I have a Riker/Troi amnesia fic that has been sitting in my notes for three years, every chapter either written, partly written, or outlined, but I just can’t make myself sit down and sort it out😫 also I used to start publishing fics before I was certain where I was going with them, and For War Alone is a relic of that (and it has also been sitting there since 2020 lol)
16. What are your writing strengths?
I have been told I’m really good at dialogue, and I choose to take people at their word😅
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
I’m addicted to adverbs, also I just love reusing the same words and phrases over and over- one time in a first draft I used the word ‘actually’ four times in a single paragraph!
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
I love reading that! I feel like it makes the setting and characters and everything seem more realistic, but for writing it I pretty much need to rely on google translate or multilingual moots lol
19. First fandom you wrote for?
I wrote a LotR fic a long time ago! But the first fic in my modern day stretch of fic writing was for the Star Trek novel-verse: Psi-Ops
20. Favorite fic you’ve ever written?
Oh gosh this is so hard but I’m gonna say Where A Million Stars Catch Fire bc I put in a lot of time and effort carefully constructing it as a tribute to Mulder’s birthday this year, and I’m really proud of how it ultimately turned out🥰
Tagging @tofuttim @katy-kt-katie @incidental-ao3 @cutemothman @mollybecameanengineer and whoever else who wants to do it!

20 Fanfic Questions
Thanks for the tag (days and days ago now) @randomfoggytiger.
1. How many works do you have on AO3? 21 as of today, which is kind of wild. (I have some on Gossamer, too, because: old.)
2. What's your total AO3 words count?306,501. Working on another longer-ish one that will bump that up.
3. What fandoms do you write for?The X-Files by and large. One time I wrote a fic for a very popular fandom of the 00s I never actually posted, and now I feel differently about that fandom and never will. I can imagine a world where I might write for another fandom, but I am pretty XF-centric right now.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?Chicken Dinner, Pause, The Boy on the Beach, The Kaleidoscope, Unobserved.
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?I do respond to comments, but not all the time. I get behind in responding, and then I have to not respond to any of them to make it consistent, if that makes any sense at all? (Because someone might wonder—why did she respond to that comment and not to mine?) I know, I know, I'm sorry.  I honestly love every single comment, and I prefer to respond to them. When I have my life together, I have had great conversations in comments before.
6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? As I read over my work, I have not done a lot of angsty endings, although I have plenty of angst. I have a very old fic written the summer between season 7 and 8 called Opposition and Synthesis (one of many post-Requiem fics) that is on Gossamer and ends angsty, but that’s not a widely read piece any more, lol. I would say of my more recent work, probably Ice Water ends the angstiest.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? I have lots of happy endings. I couldn’t say.
8. Do you get hate on fics?Nooooo, not per se. I have gotten very critical comments from people who are disappointed by the turn the fic has taken, or comments taking issue with my interpretation of canon. I remember someone didn’t like the idea of Scully going on dates at all in the break-up era, and they complained about that in the comments on End of Story. That’s a difference in headcanon, so sometimes it’s frustrating when people feel theirs should prevail. But I haven’t really received what I would call “hate” exactly (so far) for which I am grateful.
9. Do you write smut. If so what kind? I have, but it’s not my favorite. It’s completely hypocritical of me because I like to read it, but it’s not my most comfortable area of writing. I think it’s a problem of not being terribly visual.  I do feel sometimes it’s necessary to a story, and my betas peer pressure me into including it sometimes, too.
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?I haven’t.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? No.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated? Yes. People translated some of my fic into Russian one time.
13. Have you ever cowritten a fic before? No. I would like to do that.
14. What's your all-time favourite ship? Mulder and Scully. Duh.
15. What's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will? Okay, I have told this story a few times, so bear with me if you’ve heard it, but I had a WIP I hadn’t finished between 2000-ish and 2021. That’s right. Twenty years. It would be very reasonable to assume I was never finishing that fic, as the first two parts had been up on Gossamer for years and I had not been seen or heard from in decades. Then during the pandemic I came back to thinking about the show, and when I came back to the fandom there were oddly people who still knew my fic. And I remembered this WIP and still had some of the ancient Word files of later chapters on my Google drive, so I decided to make a little project of finishing it and posting it to AO3. And now it’s finished. (It’s called Bloodline. You can read it and see if you can tell where the narrative is written 20 years apart.)  So I don’t believe in doubting you’ll ever finish WIPs. Never say never.
16. What are your writing strengths? I think dialogue. I would not have said plotting when I restarted this hobby, but I do think I have gotten better at plotting. And I do plan things out. I do a lot of research.
17. What are your writing weaknesses? Smut. Logistics in moving around in general – like when someone is standing or sitting and how they move from one place in the room to the other. I write in present tense a lot but past tense sometimes, so sometimes I mess up tense absent-mindedly. I’m also a very slow writer who rewrites a lot. When I see people get a prompt and then post the fic a few days later, my mind is blown, because I could absolutely never. People who do Fictober also have my deep respect, because that would be a very, very hard thing for me.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic? I would only do it very sparingly or with extensive help, as I’m not a fluent speaker in anything but English. I could probably write a little French or Spanish dialogue to understand (I think I did write a tiny bit of Spanish dialogue in We’re Not Here To Get Involved In Personal Problems). But I would really want a more fluent speaker to look it over if I were doing any significant amount.
19. First fandom you wrote for? The X-Files, really, if you don’t count that middle school Victoria Holt romance novel sequel I wrote for English class.
20. Favourite fic you've ever written? I’m going to choose three, okay? Is that egotistical? I’m sorry if so. I’ve always really liked Jackson Van De Kamp’s Not-So-Final Repose. It’s not perfect, but it’s quirky and fantastical and sentimental and has a special place in my heart. It’s also more like a play, which is probably one of the genres my writing is most influenced by. I also really like The Boy on the Beach, which took a year to write and involved so, so much research, which was fun and a positive experience. Finally, I like How To Eat Pleasant Holiday Meals With Co-Workers, which was a prompt for a holiday exchange (early MSR Thanksgiving) that I expanded into a series of Thanksgivings over the years. I ended up really enjoying imagining each of those Thanksgivings, especially the last one. That last one is my forever post-revival headcanon now lol.
Would anyone like to do this? I'm going to tag @mollybecameanengineer if she hasn't yet, but anyone should.
