I think one of the reasons I like Ito from Rainbow Live even though she’s a jerk is that, even after “developing” as a character, she interacts with others in a way that you just don’t see with other characters in this genre of show.

Aloof characters who have to get forced into things are not uncommon, but the unique thing about Ito is that even after she’s forced to do something, she doesn’t enjoy it. Usually a tsundere/kuudere type of character will object to being dragged around, but by the end of it, they’re like “that was great! I had so much fun!!” Ito doesn’t. She got forced to have a sleepover, and all that happened was some polite but uncomfortable conversation, some food she didn’t really like, and being comforted from a distance. She got into a romantic relationship, but she didn’t really confide in her friends when things went wrong, and they weren’t able to help her past the point of getting her into the relationship. She got dragged to the hot springs and just kind of felt uncomfortable and on edge the whole time. That’s not to say that she never got anything out of her relationships, because she did, but there was no point where she seamlessly merged into the “and everybody had fun” narrative that’s so common in kids’/girls’ shows.

Is it her fault that she didn’t have fun? Partially, yes. But it speaks to me as someone who’s always had trouble bonding with people and doing “fun” activities.
