Hello everyone! Welcome to my japanese learning diary!

Some ground facts: I've been studying Japanese on and off for a long long period of time with varying success. Finally last December I hit my first measurable goal. I passed the N5! (Very much unofficially with an app- mind you)

I was happy with my success and made a plan to pass the N4 in the next 3-4 months and the N3 around this time next year. These were vague goals I hadn't committed to very much. However as I shared these plans my friend laughed at me and told me there was no way I could do it. So me, being a reasonable adult absolutely ignored his opinion and continued on my merry way happily.

Who am I kidding? I took offence and upped my arrogance x100. One thing led to another and we now have a gamble going. According to that I absolutely must pass by February 12th 2024.

It has been a couple of days and to answer the question of do I regret this? Absolutely. But I'm a woman of my word and this is now a thing that will happen. Come hell or high water.

Currently my study plan is to study vocab, kanji and grammar in renshuu. I'm also reading a small picture book a day at tadoku.org as well as listening to beginner podcasts. I'm also watching japanese gaming streams but to be completely honest my understanding of them is less than 10% and mostly I do it for fun. Let's just call it passive learning :D

I'm a big fan of statistics so I'll share some here.

These are my current renshuu stats. 1075 words, 117 kanji and 63... grammar? I don't think they are seperate grammar points. To be completely honest with you I've no idea what this means.

To compare to what you need to know for N3

~650 kanji

~3750 vocab words

So im around a 4th or 5th of the way there. It will be a long journey ahead. Possible? Yes absolutely. Lots of hard work, long hours and frustration? Also yes. Absolutely.

The use cases of ばかり

下の言葉がどう違いますか。

ばかり

ばかりだ

ばかりに

ばかりでなく・ばかりか

勉強しましょう。全部の文法点はN3のレベルです。

まず、「ばかり」のは一人でに「only, just」の意味です。

使い方：「〜てばかり」や「名詞＋ばかり」です。

例：お菓子ばかりが食べているから、お腹が痛います。

例：肉ばかり食べたら、ビタミンが足りないそうです。

次は「ばかりだ」の文法点です。「continue doing, keep on verb-ing」の意味です。

使い方：動詞の辞書形の後に使えます。

例：新しいポケモンゲームが発売したから、この週末、ゲームだけするばかりで何もしなかった。

次は「ばかりに」です。「simply because」の意味です。

使い方：動詞の辞書形や名詞や形容詞や名容詞の後に使えます。

例：背が高くないばかりに、お皿を達しませんでした。

次は「ばかりでなく・ばかりか」。「ばかりでなく」は「だけでなく」より形式的な言い方です。「でけでなく」のは普段の会話や文章で現れるです。

例：アニメばかりでなくの日本のドラマが大好きです。

ハローみんな。俺はコルビだ。今のところ日本語、中国語とドイツ語を勉強してる。言語を勉強するのが大好きだよ。めちゃ言語を勉強した、そんなベトナム語、フランス語、スパイン語、スウェーデン語。めちゃ言語だあああ！！！でも、日本語、中国語とドイツ語は本当に言語しか勉強してない。

後々スウェーデン語とベトナム語の勉強に戻すつもりだ。将来の言語を勉強するために、俺もノルド語を加えりたいだ。

このチャレンジついてに対して、来年Ｎ３とhsk４を受けるつもりのように、めちゃモチベが欲しくてもらうように。

このaccは日本語のみに焦点を当ててるのだって、他の言語を使おうと思ってる。特に俺のマイン言語。

In the future, I'm planning to go back to Swedish and also add more Scandinavian languages to my list, like Norwegian and Finnish. I also want to try Russian and Mongolian. But for now, I have to focus on my main languages and how to get out of the intermediate limbo.

I'll take JLPTN3 and HSK4 next year, so I hope this challenge will be a boost of confidence and motivation for my study routine.

There are many ways to count things in Japanese depending on the type of object being counted! たて　vs。ばかり

今日の文法は「たて」と「~たばかり」です。両方は「just finished」の意味だか、使う方が違います。

「たて」is used after the verb stem form. The nuance here, is it refers more to the time right after being completed, rather than the fact the action was completed. 例：出来たてのパンが好きです。

On the other hand、「たばかり」is used after the た (past causal) form of a verb. The nuance here is exact opposite of たて, where it does refer more to the completion of the action, rather than the time it was completed at. 例：A:田中さん、食事に行きますか。田中：さっき食べたばかりだから、大丈夫。

ばかり has other use cases as well, but those are not for this post. They will be next!

JLPT N3 - うちに

【What Does it Mean?】

うちに actually has several different meanings. The one we will be looking at in this post is the "while A is true, B holds" meaning. Here is a chart to help you:

Let's say that you are in the mood for some Chinese food, but the store is going to close in an hour. You might say, "While the Chinese place is still open, let's order some food."

The idea is that you only have a certain amount of time to order while the shop is open. When that time is up, ordering will become impossible. An alternative way to say this is, "Before the Chinese place closes, let's order some food."

If you look at the Japanese, the "while" translation is closer to what is actually being said. However, the "before" translation may be easier to understand as you are getting used to this grammar pattern.

【How Do You Use It?】

Now that we know the meaning, let's look at how we can use うちに:

The chart above says that if you use うちに with a verb, the verb can be in positive or negative nonpast form (so not 〜した or 〜しなかった).

いるうちに = while (the subject) is in or at a place...

忘れないうちに = while (the subject) doesn't forget...

If you use うちに with an adjective, keep the い ending.

若いうちに = while (the subject) is young...

Finally, if you use うちに with a noun, you have to connect them with the particle の. (This tells us that うち is actually a noun too!)

独身のうちに = while (the subject) is unmarried...

【Examples】

Finally, let's look at some examples:

①｛年を取りすぎない｝うちに｛また、イギリスへ行きたい｝。

= While I'm not too old, I want to go to England again

= I want to go to England again before I get too old.

②｛独身の｝うちに、｛いろいろなことをやってみたいです｝。

= While I'm unmarried, I want to try doing many different things

= Before I get married, I want to try doing many different things.

③ ちょっと冷まして、｛熱い｝うちに｛食べないように｝。*

= Let your food cool off a little; while it's hot, don't eat it.

= Let your food cool off a little; don't eat it while it's still hot.

Notice that in example #3, the "before" translation wouldn't work.

【Conclusion】

So there you have it! There are several other ways that うちに is used, but for now I think this N3 grammar point will help you express yourself in more natural Japanese. Let me know if you have any questions by leaving a comment down below!
