3, 17 and 29 for the ao3 wrapped! :)
3. What work are you most proud of (regardless of kudos/hits)?
Probably Principia Botanica, the Laurence/Tharkay hanahaki fic I wrote after reading the TV tropes article on hanahaki and doing absolutely no further research or reading. It was going to be something I just dashed off, but ended up having some of my very favorite lines in it.
17. Your favorite character to write this year?
I immediately jumped to say Granby, because his dialogue is a delight, and then to Tharkay, because he's such a fun mix of performance and sincerity. But honestly, I think writing Laurence POV was my favorite. Maybe its just because its so close to the source material.
29. Favorite line/passage you wrote this year?
Not to be predictable, but its from Principia Botanica
"In the Pamirs, the ferals whoop and cackle every morning while Tharkay gags a path of violets into the snow. It is almost comforting how awful they are about it, like a cautery to a fresh wound. Tharkay kicks snow over the blossoms and puts a little more snow in his mouth to melt and wash away the taste. The ferals make a game of sliding on the ice around him, speculating wildly."
I was already absolutely taken with imagining must have been Tharkay's Beleaguered Field Trip Chaperone Energy for that trip back over the Pamirs, and I just love the added insult of having to do it suffering from "terminal caring-too-much-disease" for the worlds most honorable idiot.
Honorable mention also, to another line in that fic:
In Fontainebleau, Granby catches him vomiting a long string of foxgloves into a priceless vase. "You might tell him," Granby says.  "After it went so well for you," Tharkay says, deliberately cruel. He wants very badly to not be having this conversation. He does not know the specifics, only that Granby no longer vibrates like a tuning fork whenever Laurence comes too near, and Laurence is now so careful about the ways he touches Granby.
Which really shows how NOT cut out for angst I am, because I felt SO bad for doing that to Granby -even if it happened to him offscreen- that I had to go put Little in at the end so everyone would know it turned out all right.

Hi lovelies,
A few days ago this new Bollywood movie called Pathaan, starring Shah Rukh Khan and John Abrahams, came out and so obviously I HAD to go and watch it. But fun fact about me is that I am literally a melting pot of different cultures. My dads family are Indian-Kenyan. My mums family were initially (back in the 5th-7th century) a family of Jewish royalty in what is now Afghanistan (which is actually pretty cool). They converted to Islam some time later and became part of a very particular Afghani tribe called the Pathaan (also another reason I had to watch this movie). Over the course of the next few centuries they migrated from Afghanistan to India, before being forced into Pakistan because of colonialism. Throughout all of this, my mums branch of the Pathaan tribe stuck together and so even still, my mum’s family in pure Pathaan, but I’m only half Pathaan because my mum married out. However, me being me did some deep diving into this because it’s actually pretty cool that my family tree can be traced back that far. Okay so at this point you’re probably wondering how on earth this related to Classics, but I found out that the Pathaan langue (Pashto) is actually about 2500 years old, which makes it about the same age as Latin and therefore a classical language! And so today I thought I would tell you a little bit about Pashto.
The Pashto language belongs to the Indi-Iranian language family and is mainly spoken by the ethnic communities of Afghanistan and western provinces of Pakistan, which is partially inhabited by Pashtuns (aka Pathaan’s). It is also still the native language of the indigenous Pathaan people. The language is said to have originated in the Kandahar district of Afghanistan and is said to be one of the two national languages (the other being Dari, a Persian language).
The vocabulary of Pashto has actually not been borrowed or derived from other languages, which is extremely rare for any language still spoken in a modern setting. Many of its lexis do, however, relate to other Eastern Iranian languages such as Pamir and Ossetia.
The exact origin of the Pashto language and the Pathaan tribes are unknown, but the word ‘Pashto’ derives from the regular phonological process. Nevertheless, the Pathaan are sometimes compared with the Pakhta tribes mentioned in Rigvenda, around 1700-1100 B.C., apparently they are the same people that the Greek historian Herodotus referred to Paktika (a northern province in Afghanistan). However, this comparison appears to be due in large part to the apparent similarity between their names, despite the fact that etymologically it can’t really be justified. But there are some archeological compilations and historical data and so the majority of researchers now believe that the Pashto language is around 25000 years old.
Herodotus also mentions the Paktika ‘Apridai’ tribe but it is unknown what language they spoke. However, Strabo (who lived between 64 B.C. and 24 C.E.) suggests that the tribes inhabiting the lands west of the Indus River were part of Ariana and to their east was India. Since about the 3rd century B.C. and onwards from that, these tribes were mostly referred to by the name ‘Afghan’ (or ‘Abgan’) and their language as ‘Afghani’.
Many historians and scholars believe that the earliest piece of written Pashto work dates back to the 8th century. However, a lot of history outside of the western empires lacks the same clarity and information and so even this is highly disputed. However, during the 17th century, Pashto poetry became very popular amongst the Pathaan.
To be honest, there isn’t a whole lot of information on the Pashtun language or the origin of the Pathaan, other than that they have been around since the B.C. But it’s pretty cool to me that my families culture has such a long history. This entry was pretty special to me so hopefully you all enjoyed it and I hope you all have a lovely rest of your weekend!

Do you like Cole Wehrle? Their new work is a little too Ameritrash for my tastes, but when John Company came out in '17, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole game has a clear, crisp game loop, and a new sheen of anticolonialist themes that really gives the game a big boost. He's been compared to Patrick Leder, but I think Wehrle has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor. In '19, Wehrle released this, Pax Pamir 2nd edition, their most accomplished game. I think the undisputed masterstroke is the essay included in the box against colonization and the popular interpretation of The Great Game, an essay so short, most people probably don't read it before playing. But they should, because it's not just about the pitfalls of imperialism, and the importance of dialectics, it's also a personal statement about the game itself.

hiiii <3 for the ask thing, what is your ideal kind of holiday?
i don't exactly have a clear picture for it but:
i was brought up with short sunday getaways with my parents and reading about trips chronicled on off-road motorbike magazines (e.g. 1st place where i heard about the pamir highway!)
i genuinely love driving
so: a touring roadtrip with other 3 friends i'm comfortable around. there needs to be scenery to feast our eyes on! stopping in villages/towns and exploring around, having a little hike, maybe having a chat with the locals if they're amenable and if there's an ethnographic museum a visit is a must. most importantly though, i need to be comfortable temperature-wise, i don't do well in hot weather, which is limiting but you did ask for 'ideal' so jhgdf
re-reading this hit me with the 8434577453th realisation that i am my father's daughter djdj

It’s been a busy few days.
On Friday, I woke, had some breakfast, packed a bag, and then summoned my mental fortitude to leave for my best friend’s house.  It took about an hour to drive there.  I arrived at his house, which is very large and fancy, and was greeted by him and his girlfriend.  It took me a bit to warm up, but once I did, it was just like it always was.  He and I just click, socially, and it’s so easy to talk to him.
We spent the night playing some board games--we played Root and a complicated political game called Pax Pamir.  We played a lot of board games this weekend--actually, that’s basically all I did.  Late at night, we played a little Call of Duty, which is always fun.
I slept okay, up in one of the spare bedrooms of the house.  The house is very fancy--lots of different rooms, lots of space, nice furnishings.  Parts of the house even have heated floors, which is a level of luxury I’ve never experienced.  His parents own a business that has done very well in the time I’ve known him.
Saturday was much the same.   We went out for some bagels, and then started playing a wargame called Undaunted: Stalingrad.  That was pretty fun.  I’m glad I can play long, complicated games with him--few other people in my life are willing to spend the time to do more than a simple card game.  In the evening, another of his friends came over and we ate ramen and played Mansions of Madness.  Yep, lots of board games.
Today, I got up around ten, and we played another round of Mansions of Madness before it was time to leave.  I drove home, joined my parents, and then we went to meet my aunt and uncle for a nice dinner and a card game.  It was a nice night, but I felt kind of overstimulated after such a social weekend, and it seemed like my parents were stressed out about something or another.
All in all, a pretty good weekend.  I’m feeling quite tired tonight.  I have one more day to relax at home, and then my long vacation is over, and I shall return to my apartment and start on my project (or so I hope).

Dark clouds over the Pamirs
<<<A series of recordings from a certain source.>>>
Recording 1.
Time: 05:56 Japanese Standard Time.
Date: ????, 2XXX.
Location: Mitakihara, XXXX XXXX XXXX, Upper Offices - Briefing Room.
<<<Beginning of Log.>>>
<Idle chatter, before being interrupted by the clattering of papers.>
"Settle down, Heartcatch Squad. I know you're newbies and all, but this operation is all hands on deck, so I don't have time to discipline you."
"Ayo, boss? These papers... you're having a laugh, right?"
"No time for questions or debates today, I'm afraid; I'm rather serious about this topic. So I would suggest you use your collective braincells and start learning both Russian and what those Russian words say... Don't want to press the wrong button and be launched into the air, after all!"
<Nervous laughter.>
"Heartcatch Squad, listen up. As I say, this operation will involve our entire force. That's why you've been woken so early; it's gonna be a long, long day. Now, if you'd take a moment to look at the screen..."
<A click of a remote.>
"The flight plan will take roughly 10 hours, give or take a few. We will refuel in air when we reach the Wakhan Corridor, while in Chinese airspace; our friends in Beijing did owe us a favour, and they're also more than happy to give the Syrakhanis a good kicking after their little fiasco a while back."
"But, XXXX - what's the reason for... for all this? Isn't that place essentially invulnerable? Isn't this just a long-winded way to meet our fate?"
"Heh. You have no idea. The nation and it's military themselves are gonna be the least of our problems; when we do this, we may well be making enemies of the whole world, if our diplomatic corps don't get things right."
"Y-you can't me-"
"I do."
<Clatter of a chair.>
"That's MADNESS! This is insane! Why would the Warm--"
"Acting Warmaster."
"XXXX-sama! We weren't expecting..."
"Sorry, sorry. But I thought I would personally advise this particular squad. After all - She was the one that made your little gang official."
"Wait, you mean-"
"Yeah. This operation is to save Her. Or, at the very least, get us on the path to saving her, and redeeming her name."
"..."
"Alright. We didn't know her long, but she was good to us - better than we expected."
"So?"
"We're with you, 'til the End."

Life experience has made him a very cynical personality, and he has grown tired of being shunned by the social mainstream because he is of mixed race, and has intentionally defended himself by enjoying being suspicious and hated. Thanks to this, he is hired by William Lawrence's party heading overland from China to Istanbul, but he often annoys Lawrence with unexplained outbursts. However, even so, the work itself was excellent, and a relationship of trust was built with Lawrence's candid suggestion after going through twists and turns and hardships together. After that, he works as Lawrence's true friend even though his cynical attitude hasn't changed.
Compared to Lawrence, who has an extremely strong sense of loyalty and duty to the country, Tarque, whose trust in the country and society has long since evaporated (…), is not a good match in personality, but the friendship between the two lasts to the end. In fact, Tarque doesn't have many people to open up to, so he is kind to Lawrence. Delivering Lawrence to Europe and then going back to the Pamirs to bribe wild dragons to join the RAF is an ordeal unimaginable to the average person, and taking on additional duties for the RAF while having little sense of duty to the country If you look at it, you can say it's Lawrence Duck. He visited and took care of Lawrence who was imprisoned for treason, and although he had business, he accompanied Lawrence and Temeraire to Australia, offered Sanafo work to Lawrence and Temeraire… and even asked the unemployed for a job. Thanks to true friendship, Lawrence also tar In a situation where Ke's life was at stake, he used a card he would not have used if it were his job[1], and according to indirect mentions, it seems that he appeared as a witness in a lawsuit related to Tarque's inheritance and gave favorable testimony.[2] Even when he lost his memory in volume 8, he regained his memory the moment he saw Tarke's face (…)
As he gets entangled with Lawrence, he takes on things like British Air Force missions and British government espionage missions in addition to his already dangerous receptionist job, which puts his life in exhilarating danger, but he survives to the end. At the end of the series, he wins the property inheritance lawsuit that has dragged on throughout, and thanks to this, he visits Lawrence and Temeraire, who were staying at their hometown, dressed in full clothes. Since it has not been managed in the meantime, the status and income of the inheritance are completely shit, but there is one dragon seat constituency that the British government reluctantly sat in (…), so Temeraire and Lawrence, who are interested in politics, are invited to live in the private land do. As a joke, if there is a dragon in my private property, the employees will look at me as if I were a dictator.

Kirgisthan road trip adventure by Wim van de Meerendonk, back! After I had posted "The pass to Son Kul" a few weeks ago (flickr.com/photos/115540984@N02/52517437904/in/dateposted/) I remembered that the entrance to the other side of the valley (in that picture you can see that in the far distance on the top middle, also was very scenic. We had been driving in a sort of clouded, foggy atmosphere but upon entering the valley from that pass suddenly the sky opened up, and the sun came out. The view was another breathtaking moment during this amazing road trip. So with the third shot in the valley that I also posted earlier (flickr.com/photos/115540984@N02/49631088106/in/dateposted/) you have now an impression of this wonderful piece of Kirghistan. 20 September 2019 I came back from my journey over a part of the Silk Road to and through Central Asia. 4 months of traveling through 14 countries (Germany, Austria, Hungary, Romania, Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kirgizstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Iran) before I flew home from Teheran. An impressive journey in countries that are extremely beautiful, with lovely and welcoming people and diverse cultures and history. Intense traveling with more than 20000 kilometers in our mobile home on sometimes roads that hardly could be called that way. We saw many villages and cities (some wonderful, others very ugly), countries that are transforming from the old Soviet era into something more related to older cultures and the way people live, often funded by oil readily available around the Caspian sea. We saw the amazing mountains south of the Black Sea, the wonderful Caucasus, and the high mountains in the far east close to China with peaks over 7000 meter, and not to forget the (Bulgarian) Alps! We crossed the great steppe of Kazakhstan. a drive of at least 5000 km, the remnants of lake Aral, once one of the biggest lakes of the world, saw a rocket launch from Baikonur (this little part is Russian owned), we crossed many high mountains passes, and drove the breathtaking canyon that comes from the Pamir, beginning at ca 4500 meter, and going down for ca. 400km to an altitude of 1300 meter, driving for 100's of kilometers along the Afghan border. And then the numerous lakes with all sorts of different colors from deep cobalt blue to turquoise, and one rare spectacle in Turkmenistan where a gas crater is burning already for more than 40 years. And finally and certainly not the least to mention an enormous amount of wonderful, hospitable and welcoming people. The woman often dressed in wonderful dresses, and bringing a lot of color in the streets of almost of all countries we visited. https://flic.kr/p/2o6EW4b

Remains of a Lifeboat of the Pamir, 1950s
The Pamir launched 1905, one of the so called Flying P’s, was the last Windjammer sailing around Cape Horn without an engine. In the 1950s, the four- mast barque served as a training ship for the merchant navy. In September 1957, the ship ran into a hurricane in the Atlantic Ocean.
She was on her way back from Buenos Aires to Hamburg with a cargo of grain. The ship capsized and sank. 60 ships from 13 countries took part in the large-scale rescue operation for the crew. But of the 86 mostly very young men on board, only six could be rescued.
Only little could be found, including two heavily damaged lifeboats. One (the one on the photo) is in the Maritime Museum in Bremerhaven, the other serves as a memorial for all sailors who remained at sea in the Jacobi Church in Lübeck.

But what about the rally fic?
it's a little tricky because my goal with this one was just a road trip aesthetic in general, and it was supposed to be set in the states. so you know, buying candy at gas stations and driving through the nevada desert. I guess as soon as I knew that it was going to be about mongolia instead, it was just camping scenes. little tents clustered around a dead campfire under the stars, ringed by similarly shitty little cars, on a vast open plain marred only by tire tracks in the dirt highway.
or maybe it was baku, staring at the stripped bones of both a street circuit and a shared failure, and realising that no one cares as soon as the spotlight is off. definitely swimming in the sea off the rocks of the dubrovnik city wall. sunrise balloon spotting in cappadocia, sleeping on the bare tarmac of an industrial harbour. more scenes yet to come 👀
slightly tangential but I'm begging you to watch this video (2 hour mongol rally 2013 vlog by my favourite team, skip to ~7 mins in to miss the fundraising blurbs. two south africans, an australian, and a british guy taking the route across the caspian, the deep cut through eastern turkmenistan, and the pamir highway <3 they are my besties)
