so i joined a locksport club recently, met some friendly and kind, but slightly weird people (most of them go to defcon, if you know the type), and i learned something kind of cute (in a slightly weird way)
so you know those love lock bridges, where people lock padlocks with their and their partner's initials written on them, and throw the keys in the river to symbolize their love?
Tumblr media
.
In most towns, the local government heavily discourages this practice, considers the locks to be litter, and routinely hire people to cut off the locks and throw them away when they're starting to weigh down the bridge.
anyway, apparently if you have a friend who's been going through a rough break-up or is otherwise feeling romantically disillusioned, you can sometimes help them feel better by inviting them out to go steal locks with you from the local love-lock bridge
(you can then donate the locks to your local lock-sport club to gift to beginners for practice, they (an obviously neutral party) told me)
(also the lock-sport club does this together as a group sometimes, and we were more than welcome to bring any romantically disillusioned friends along)
(it's not theft! these locks are considered abandoned property. in towns that consider the locks litter, it's really a public service, if you think about it)

Hi there, I'm writing a book that occasionally has lockpicking. I'm up to a bit where a character gets a new, better lockpicking kit. And for a bit of dialogue to work, there needs to be a rare lock pick that's impressive. But even with my research I can't find anything like that. So I'd thought I ask here. Is there a rare lock pick you all in the lock picking community would be amazed by? And if not, is there something like that which would cause the same amount of amazement?

Kaz Brekker x gn! Reader - Locket
A/n: I just thought about how Kaz explains lock picking in the book and this came to mind
Warnings: I don't think so?
Summary: One day you demand Kaz to teach you how to pick a lock, you don't know if this was the lock he had in mind but he seems to enjoy it either way.
Pairings: (romantic) kaz x reader
Pronouns used: No pronouns used
Pov: 2nd person
Tumblr media
"Teach me."
Kaz's gaze snapped up to meet yours, his inky black orbs the ones of a crow were wide for a second before they narrowed back down to his paper work at his desk glancing back and forth from you and his gloved hands.
"Teach you what? Don't waste my time."
Your hand slithered into your pocket revealing a lock as you hung it before his eyes like a prized jewel.
"You heard me Brekker, teach me how to pick a lock."
It was silent for a moment, it was an overarching moment that seemed to last forever. Before he finally placed his paperwork aside and patted the empty part of his desk in front of him as he leaned back in his chair.
You hoped from your standing position towards the desk, eagerly plopping down in front of Kaz.
The two of you were close, he moved in between your knees as he motioned for you to show him the lock that you had brought with you.
You handed it over to him and he looked over it once humming a bit before nodding his head. Your heartbeat was erratic, all over the place as he lifted up his head to meet your unwavering gaze.
"This will do." His cold voice floated into the room, and you briefly closed your eyes to absorb the sound before opening them in an instant.
"The art of pick locking is much like the art of unwinding someone. To reveal their true self underneath everything else that lays on top. It's delicately taking the strings and pushing them away."
His hands worked the lock and the satisfying click rang in your ears as his lips twitch upwards at your bewildered expression. He made it look so effortless, so easy, like a dancer floating across the stage. Kaz really did make pick locking look like the finest of the arts.
He handed the lock over to you like you had any sense of what you were doing. But perhaps, you did.
The lock's metal is cold as your hands warm up the contraption.. Your mind is disarray, you don't know if you should try and pick the lock. It could be dangerous to do so, you glanced up at Kaz's face in front of you. Yet, you could always try.
"Like this?" You whisper, your hands still gripping the metal of the lock as Kaz's eyebrows frown as does his mouth. You hadn't even placed the tip of your fingers near the opening of the lock - the opening of it's secrets. Of course he was confused.
Instead you leaned forward so there was barely any space between the two of you, you let your breath fan out across his face and his eyes flutter shut at the feeling. You hear the moment at the such proximity the two of you are when his breath catches, and his hands grip onto the handles of the chair.
You don't touch him, you would never do that to him, but you didn't need to anyways.
"Yes, exactly like that."

I bought an old bag and I can't open it because it's locked - anyone got any tips?
Tumblr media
The eBay seller said they "wiggled it a bit" and it opened, but I've been trying for ages with a paperclip and a crochet hook and I have no idea what I'm supposed to be doing.
I can rotate that inner circle but that's about it.
