Notes on the Care of the Tormented, ed. Elrond Half-elven
Written for @silmarillionepistolary day 3!
Rating: T
Relationships: Maglor & Maedhros, Maglor & Elrond
Words: 4k
I have hesitated a long time over transcribing this old collection of documents, and having them bound together as a pamphlet; but the library at Imladris is well-understood to be the finest East of the Sea, and I do not wish to deprive it of any lore. A point of pride, perhaps. So I have had two copies made, one for our own collection and one for that of the library at Fornost Erain — for I would not have it said that the Eldar hoard their knowledge, and leave Men to labour in the dark.
The library at Amon Ereb was nothing to marvel at, but it was there, in the uneasy days of my youth, that I first came across these notes. They had been written by Maglor son of Fëanor at varying points over the course of the First Age, and were altogether a rather disorganised collection; but I found myself drawn to them the very first time I read them, for the care that had been taken in their composition, and in their preservation through defeat after defeat and flight after flight. Maglor was no healer, certainly not by the time I knew him: his hands had been bloodied too many times for that gift to have lingered, if ever he had it. But all the same, he paid great attention to the care of Maedhros his brother — there was no other Maedhros would permit to touch him, or speak to him when he had an episode.
It would have been easy to conclude that Maglor did it all on instinct, watching them. So I was struck, on first finding these notes, by how much of his practice he had documented. The sons of Fëanor were all diligent record-keepers — ironic, many would claim, considering how much lore was lost in Menegroth beneath their marauding swords, and again at the Havens of Sirion. But none of them seemed to trust to the infallible memories of the Eldar, judging by the contents of even that much-depleted library at Amon Ereb. Still at times I wondered for whom exactly Maglor had written the notes — I do not doubt that he referred to them often himself, but I could never make out whether he had had any other audience in mind. Did he imagine that Maedhros might survive him, and dwell with another? I know not.

Tidbit Tuesday
summoned by @sallysavestheday
Currently, knees-deep in Two Half-Kings. Here's a little spoiler:
So it is as Fingolfin feared. This very reaction is why he has brought Fingon into this room behind closed doors. Because if Fingon’s anger is roused like this, Fingolfin cannot imagine what Maglor's letter would bring out of those in his host who have lost children, entire families. There are no Noldor for anyone to rule. There is only us and them.
no pressure calling upon @welcomingdisaster @meadowlarkx @emyn-arnens to share a bit of a WIP if you'd like

Tuesday Tidbit
Thank you to @eilinelsghost and @thescrapwitch for the tag to share a little of a WIP. Here's Maglor, getting frustrated as he tries to stage a Grand Production for the Mereth Aderthad:
The first problem is that there are simply not enough children. Among the hosts of the Noldor, only twenty-two remain of the appropriate age and temperament to render Maglor’s vision. He can see it in his mind’s eye as he would have cast it for the stage in Tirion: thirty-six small bodies of perfectly equal height, their hair falling dark and pure against their silken gowns. Lantern-bearers. Wisdom-carriers. Bringers of light. But there are only twenty-two, and those ill-matched – all dark, true, but some tall, some short, more than one halting from an injury on the Ice. Their people are unlikely to beget in the stress of war, and those who have done so guard their children jealously, as treasures far more precious than anything they have already lost to the snow or the flames. The littler ones will not be shared for this festival, nor indeed are they of an age to balance grace with joy, as he imagines. There is nothing for it but to borrow from the Sindar. The children of Mithrim are by nature smaller and lighter than the Noldor; there will be no perfect symmetry. But there is something to a blended rank, a gesture to their hopes for integration. It will have to do.
What's in your workbasket, @melestasflight @a-tehta @littlewhitemouseagain @polutrope @elentarial and anyone else who has a snippet they would like to share?

I love it when Elrond is portrayed as someone who is a little bit incomprehensible to most of the elves at first. Not even just because he's a half-elf, but because he reminds them all of so many other people, and that layering can be kind of jarring.
He sings beautifully, with a voice that sounds like no elf or man, and it reminds many of the Sindar of Luthien. It reminds some of the Noldor of someone else, another singer with raven-dark hair and starry gray eyes.
The braids he does his hair in– and he always keeps it braided at first, because letting it run loose is another thing that makes people whisper of Luthien– are in the traditional Noldor style. The survivors of Gondolin love that; Turgon always wore his hair in classical styles too. The other part of the House of Finwe that clung to traditional braids goes unmentioned. But everyone knows.
And he was clearly taught about court manners; taught to be gracious and charming, and a very good listener. The elf who could have taught Elrond those things is usually skipped over entirely, in favor of those reminiscing about Idril's graceful poise or Melian's endless patience.
He looks very much like Luthien, but there is a particular Finwean sharpness in his facial structure; something that makes him look a lot like Fingolfin, as well. Fingolfin looked very much like his father. And his older brother.
His smile is just like Earendil's (whose smile is just like Tuor's), and his strange, birdlike laugh is from Elwing. He fights and writes with his left hand– but then, so did Earendil, because while all elves are right-handed, not all humans or half-elves are. He eats no meat– just like Beren, they say, but the way Elrond tells it the choice had nothing to do with that history. There is ainuric power in him and something very human in the set of his shoulders. The flowers grow around any place he stays long enough. He gets sick in a way no elf, and certainly no maia, ever would. His accent is odd, and archaic, and changes noticeably when he's too tired to obscure it. His mannerisms are a mixture of about twelve people, almost all of whom are dead, and several of whom are not spoken of by the time he shows up in Gil-Galad's camp.
And the reflections of Elrond unsettle a lot of people; because one moment they see a fallen hero or loved one, and the next they see the person that took them. Or perhaps someone else, that they never knew at all. There is reverence and fear and uncertainty. It's messy.
Elrond himself is coming to peace with this by the War of Wrath. There is love in carrying the parts of your ancestors with you, even when they aren't around any more. And he knows better than anyone that he is always himself, first and foremost. Still, it takes everyone else a while to stop seeing a ghost and start seeing Elrond.
