Azula’s pep talk to Zuko, Ty Lee, and Mai moments before the eclipse on the day of Black Sun. Before she has to go into the distraction bunker.

Azula: You know I think it’s really admirable that you all chose to stay and fight for the people of Caldera city.

Ty Lee: Oh! Thanks Azula!

Azula: When I first met you all, I honestly never thought you’d amount to anything, but you’ve really proven me wrong. Even You Zuko.

Mai: Uh… Cool. Thanks… Azula.

Azula: Sure, you might not be the most conventional group of soldiers, but no matter the challenge, you always manage to find a way to come out on top. And that’s something really special.

Zuko: … What’s goin’ on with you?

Azula: Me? Nothing.

Ty Lee: No, you’re acting really weird.

Azula: I just want you all to know how much I appreciate you… That’s it.

Mai: You think we’re gonna fucking die!

Azula: No, I don’t!

Mai: No, you do! You definitely do! You’re getting all sentimental and shit!

Azula: (very obviously lying) Nooooo! Guys! Come on, you’ll be fine! I’ve got total faith in you! You’re some of the best soldiers I ever knew!

Ty Lee: WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT PAST TENSE BULLSHIT?

Azula: Look, I just want you to know, I’m proud of you. I’m sure if you stick together, you’ll be okay. What unit are you in?

Zuko: Volunteered for the front lines!

Azula: Oooooh.

Mai: YOU WHAT?

Ty Lee: ZUKO!

Azula: Well… Look on the bright side!

Azula: …

Mai: …

Ty Lee: …

Zuko: …

Mai: You know if you say that, you’re supposed to follow it up with the bright side.

Mai headcanon time.

I think Mai knows about the asylum Azula went to. Not necessarily the details, but enough to know that it is a very bad place. Ukano and Michi probably told her that's where she would get sent if she acted up. After all, they're the reasons she bottled up all of her emotions and was unable to express herself. So it's not that big of a stretch if the place's reputation for troubled Fire Nation girls is well known to people like Azula.

All the more reason for Mai to clam up and be as stoic as she is. After all, being quiet and sitting still is good behavior. And Azula in the Spirit Temple is pretty blatant about what happens to girls that don't show good behavior...

as many criticisms i have of mai as a character, i really disagree with the idea that her “just letting” azula stop the trade for tom tom shows that she doesn’t care about him or that she’s not afraid of azula. i actually find this to be the moment i feel the most sympathy for mai in the entire series.

don’t get me wrong—i don’t think she originally joined azula out of fear; i think she was more or less being honest when she said she would do anything to get out of omashu because she was bored.

but when azula halts the exchange and compromises tom tom’s safety, something shifts. the music becomes really tense. mai’s expression doesn’t change, but she takes a beat too long to answer, she looks to where sokka is holding tom tom, and then she agrees with azula anyway.

it wasn’t enough for azula for mai to join her because she wanted to—azula wanted mai to join her on her terms and to know that she held all the cards, that she could decide a trade for mai’s brother wasn’t worth giving up bumi as a prisoner and mai couldn’t say anything about it without risking treason.

and this is the moment i think is supposed to show that mai now understands the danger she actually is in, similar to the close-up of ty lee’s face at the circus as azula insists the net be set on fire and wild animals set loose.

ty lee says no originally, but then tries to protect herself by backtracking and claiming it’s the universe who wants her to join the mission. mai protects herself by never saying no at all, displaying a mask of apathy, and (though this is conjecture) maybe even hoping if she shows enough loyalty by not disagreeing, azula will reward her by changing her mind and help her get her brother back later.

Every time Katara Comforts Sokka

"The Spirit World":

Katara: Sokka! [She runs to him and embraces him, while other villagers embrace their loved ones.] Sokka: What happened? Katara: You were trapped in the Spirit World for 24 hours! How are you feeling?

"The Storm":

Katara: [Pressing a wet rag onto Sokka's forehead.] This should bring your fever down. Sokka: You know what I love about Appa the most? His sense of humor. Katara: That's nice. I'll tell him.

"Avatar Day":

Sokka: [Sadly.] I feel like I've lost part of my identity. [He jumps up and moves Aang's hat slightly so that he can point at Aang's arrow.] Imagine if you lost your arrow, or Katara lost her … [Makes a hair loopies gesture with a somewhat bored look.] hair loopies. He slowly saunters over to the stall, where Katara gives him a loving hug in order to comfort him before she holding her hands in front of herself while smiling lovely at Sokka.

"The Earth King":

Sokka: Someone has to stay here with the Earth King and help him plan for the invasion. [Stands up.] I guess that's me. Katara: No, Sokka. I know how badly you wanna help Dad. You go to Chameleon Bay. I'll stay here with the king.

[This last one is a little dubious as "comforting," although obviously Katara is being very nice.

"Sokka's Master":

Sokka: It's just, all you guys can do this awesome bending stuff like putting out forest fires, and flying around and [Side-view of Toph, Aang and Katara.] making other stuff fly around. I can't fly around, okay? [View of Sokka from behind.] I can't do anything. Side-view of the group. Katara: That's not true. No one can read a map like you.

"DoBS Part 1":

Hakoda: Ah, a little, better. I need, to get back to the troops. [Attempts to stand but is too weak to.] Ahh! Katara: You're hurt, badly. You can't fight anymore. Hakoda: Everyone's counting on me to lead this mission Katara, I won't let them down. [Attempts to stand again but can't.] Ahh! Sokka: Can't you heal him any faster? Katara: I'm doing everything I can. Sokka: [Looks around before looking confidant.] I'll do it. Katara: No offense Sokka, but you're not exactly Mr. Healing Hands. Sokka: No. [Stands confidently.] I'll lead the invasion force. Katara: Don't be crazy Sokka. Sokka: Maybe I am a little crazy, but the eclipse is about to start and we need to be up that volcano by the time it does. Hakoda: You can do this. [Cuts to a close-up of him.] I'm proud of you son. Katara: I still think you're crazy, but I'm proud of you too.

Katara and Sokka were very close as siblings, and Katara was parentifed to the point that Sokka saw here as his "replacement mother." Despite that, we only see Katara comfort Sokka 6 times in the entire series, despite them appearing together in significant roles in nearly every episode in the series.

By contrast, "evil, heartless" Mai comforts Zuko 5 times, despite barely appearing on screen with him. "Evil, heartless, terrible sister" Azula tries to comfort Zuko 6 times, despite only being on a semi-decent terms with him for a sixth of the series.

I want to clear up a mistake people make with Azula and Ursa.

Ursa didn’t play favorites.

Ursa didn’t think Azula was a monster.

Ursa simply, unequivocally, just didn’t enable Azula’s worst traits like Ozai did.

Ozai’s favorite child was Azula, but Ursa still loved her more.

Because enabling isn’t love.

What did Ozai’s enabling do? It made Azula into the type of person to never have any loyal friends. It made the type of person that Mai and Tai Lee would betray at the risk of their own lives.

Ursa pushed Azula to be with her friends. To be with Zuko. Ozai pushed Ursa away, and both kids suffered for it. Azula became a sadist, enjoying seeing her brother get burned—while Zuko was pushed away because he cared for his people.

Azula thought her mom hated her because her mom was the only one who cared enough to tell her no.
