what's a good Scarecrow comic to start out with?

With a lot of choices, comes a better question--- What would YOU like to read?

Are you old school? Do you like the old faded comic look or the simple color schemes? Go with Riddle of the Human Scarecrow in World's Finest 3. That's his firs appearance.

Do you like southern gothic and have religious trauma? You'll want to read Scarecrow: Year One (two issues)

Are you more interested in the classics? Sleep Hollow perhaps? Were you bullied as a kid? Then you should read Batman Annual 19 (another origin)

Want something more modern and have a thing for BDSM apparel? I recommend checking out Fear State (there's a whole bunch of these, but anything with him on the cover is a good start)

Did you grow up with the animated series? There's comics for that!

Interested in his Yellow Lantern appearances? Check out Blackest Night!

Loved Happy Halloween Scooby-doo and want more hijinks with scoob? Yeah, we have that!

Have any tips on writing Jonathan/Scarecrow? Or things to especially avoid? I don’t write cannon a lot but want to try with him for a fic I’m writing due to a fun scene I had in mind, plus scythe fighting is really fun. But it’s a bit intimidating to tackle one of my fav’s and a strong character like him. Also thoughts on Crane being immune to fear toxin?

Hey, I can help! Here's some general knowledge and tips you might find useful!

Jonathan, depending on the origin (year one, verses say, btas) he can either be afraid of crows or empowered by them. He loves to scare birds in general though and sometimes even has a crow companion. None of these choices are right or wrong, it depends on what you want to write

He lives off others fear, and even his own fear. Sometimes he takes the toxin just of feel fear. There's even canons were he's virtually emotionless from toxin overdose

Speaking of above, I personally hate the trope of Jonathan not being immune to his own toxin. Let's be real, he tests it on himself all the time and definitely has SOME kind of immunity. It's literally his baby, he's not going down if batman injects him with it. Sorry DC, but I'm different.

He is VERY SMART, one of THE smartest rogues if not literally the smartest. He's gonna use your words against you, he's gonna analyze you deep down and tear you apart from trauma to trauma.

Even so, he's had a lot of childhood issues. He is bullied by kids and adults like.So, it's possible to get to him just by mocking him.

OH. And don't forget the fact that he himself is a bully. He's the "it happened to me, so I will make everyone suffer as I did" type. The irony is not lost on him

He's not weak. If he can successfully use a scythe, he's fucking strong, it's just that he appears lanky and weak. It's all muscle I assure you. (Don't forget violent dancing -- see batman annual 19 for good references) He will use his looks against you in this way, don't underestimate him. (also, sorry DC -- he's built different)

As for what to avoid, well that's up to you. You don't have to make him scared of crows, or give him a bird friend. You can write him super dark and nasty, absolutely vile. Misogynistic, even. Some comics do that. (not that I agree, but I can see it being valid)

Honestly, just have fun, maybe use a handful of comics for inspiration. I'm of the mind that there is no right or wrong way to use comic characters like in the DC or Marvel verses, because SO MANY writers have written them and there's always going to be contradictions---and with that, someone will ALWAYS like what you have written. Not everyone will, but you don't need it to appeal that way, find your niche. That's how we prosper as creatives.

Do you have any headcanons for how the rogues treat retail/service workers/henchmen???

My first thought was: Starbucks baristas

and which rogues are the Karen and which are the angels.

Jonathan is an angel, he's patient. He'll tip nicely. He'll complement them. Riddler? he's a Karen. Always orders the most off menu complicated drink, yells when they don't do it in 0.5 micoseconds and never tips, despite being extremely wealthy in the Arkhamverse

Waylon always doordashes his coffee, but he gives good reviews and tips the dashers -- even though the money is sticky, it's usually a 20 dollar bill for a five dollar coffee

Harley is also an angel, sweet talks the works, gives big tips. Puts the location on a "no attack" list -- Selina too. She once put a big ass diamond in their tip jar.

Two-face is okay, but he can be an ass half of the time. (lol)

and Joker? He's banned. There are literally signs with his face crossed out.

I just found out that there at a bunch of AI scarecrow chat bots that one can bother and do role play adventures with on the the character.ai app and I wondered if you have messed with them at all. I’ve basically been obsessed with it since finding all the scarecrows on it.

Please don't use these AI Apps, even for fun or jokes. All they do is harm artists, writers and creators as a whole. If you care EVEN JUST ONE PERCENT about creators, you wouldn't use AI.

Find a role play partner here on tumblr. A real person. Or a friend. ANYONE but AI. AI is unreliable -- but also very sneaky and it will use whatever you feed into for the greater evil. Got an idea you love with your whole heart and would be devistated if someone plagiarized you? Well, too bad. It's the AI's now.

There's no way these character.ai things can be accurate, especially for comics with hundreds of verses. Read comics, write your own fanfic, rp with the (insert huge number here) of people in the fandom. Do anything but feed the monster.

Please, I beg of you. You hurt the creators you depend on when you use AI. I would literally write you a story for whatever you want if you could stop using AI. It's that serious to me.

This is a no AI zone. I will defend artists with all my power.

I just need to share with someone this very random thought I had yesterday in the middle of the night. So. The Arkham Knight Scarecrow. No lips, right? But you do need lips to... pronounce Bs and Ps and Ms... Well, it would affect all of his speech obv, but it's impossible to say these three letters without lips. The spookyboy shouldn't be able to pronounce Batman and it won't leave my head now. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

What is Jonathan had a deeply depressed student who always thinks they are never enough and always overwork themselves and apologise for everything all the time? If they always acted okay but they arent? What would he do? Take all the time you need and thank you so much!

I don't know if this is a reflection of something inner, but please know that people are here for you.

I have suffered depression since high school, and I am long since out of college. This is why I firmly believe and support that Scarecrow cares about mental illness be it a student, partner or friend--he would help. I know that to some this is wildly out of character, but what is fiction for other than to imagine and create our own stories?

With a student like you described, Jonathan would probably know or have known of their mental health simply through observation. This is a smart man, and he loves his students. If someone is struggling, he knows. More than likely, he'd take the student aside and assist them in getting accommodations and perhaps a in school therapist. Something that wouldn't cost them, as most students are broke. He cares, I know in my heart that much. He would help them.

and, he's helped me. So I know as silly as it sounds, feel free to send in more asks and do create your own batman worlds. It can be healing. No matter what anyone tries to tell you, your headcanon is valid.

This is one of those sad requests - your headcanons for how Jonathan copes with a loved one's death? Specifically a lover?

Death is one of those things that Jonathan does not fear, his own death, that is. The death of a loved one? Well, he never considered it, who would ever love him or be loved by him.

Then you came along. You changed EVERYTHING.

You gave him a reason for living, besides ya know...fear. You gave him something to smile about, not sinisterly---but genuinely. Your presence in his life was nothing short of a miracle, and we all know how he views religion.

For a long time, he assumed, hoped even, that he would die before you. Because there is no way he could cope in a world without you. He would bury himself in his work as he slowly spiraled lower and lower into depression. Then, came the nightmares. The ones where you blamed him for your death. He couldn't live with the guilt.

Try and try as he must to distract himself, nothing would fill the void you created when you came into his life. You filled a space he didn't even know he NEEDED. And now? What now?

He will slowly unwind at the seams. He will do anything, put himself in Arkham again, crawl into his cell and deteriorate until there is nothing left. Fear could not compare to you, and he realized that far, far too late.
