I’ve just learned of a whole new act of genocide against the Navajo people during the Great Depression from this book I’m reading, “A Short History of the World According To Sheep”.
Around half a century after the majority of the Navajo had originally been forced off their land, with millions dying in a forced trek known as “the Long Walk”, and then *finally* allowed to return, the US Government basically declared “they were keeping too many sheep on their land” (which they were *not*; the Navajo bred a stunning variant of the churro sheep breed despite mass slaughter of their animals at the time of the original 19th century genocidal acts, and their husbandry of the land and their animals was reportedly superb, despite it being pretty arid even then) and, despite ongoing legal challenges, enacted a mass slaughter of these churro herds that had been revived with such love, not to mention 10,000 horses.
This destroyed the economy in the area, left the people on the brink of starvation, and broke the hearts of the Navajo.
The Navajo churro breed of sheep was on the edge of extinction until the 1970s. There are apparently still giant heaps of sheep and horse bones lying in ravines where these poor creatures were slaughtered by federal agents. The Navajo still sing mourning songs about it and all the human deaths that followed.
I’ve never even heard of this before. Not even a whisper of it.
The pointless brutality of doing that during a global economic disaster seems cartoonishly evil. And yet, of course, we know that the cruelty was the *point*.
There have been so many acts of genocide against indigenous Americans that something like this as recently as the 1920s can literally disappear. And now, of course, they are threatened just as fatally, if less directly, by climate change threatening to make the Navajo lands uninhabitable.
I cant help drawing comparisons with the IDF burning Palestinian olive groves. Wanton, pointless destruction of the living beings a culture reveres, nurtures, husbands and depends on is not one of the better-known acts of genocide, but it is both materially and spiritually a very real one.

The Navajo-Churro, also known as the Churro, American, or Navajo Four-Horned is a breed of domestic sheep originating with the Spanish Churra sheep obtained by the Diné Navajo tribe around the 16th century AD. Over the following centuries the Navajo bred the sheep to adapt to a pastoral lifestyle in the harsh deserts and badlands of the american south west. Creating a hearty and disease resistant breed which is well known for its fine wool and lean but delicious meat. The churro became a vital part of Navajo subsistence and culture. When the US military forced the entire Navajo nation to march to a reservation in 1864, they also culled the vast majority of the nation’s livestock including thousands upon thousands of churro sheep. A few herd managed to survive either by being taken with the tribe or fled to remote canyons where they became feral. As part of the Treaty of Bosque Redondo in 1868, the Navajo where allowed to return to there homeland, in addition they were given large quantities of livestock to replace what was slaughtered, which included many western varieties of sheep. Unfortunately these interbreed with the few remaining churro populations and overall contaminated the line. Then in the 1930s the the US government implemented the Navajo Livestock Reduction act in which they again slaughtered a large amount of the Navajo Nation’s livestock, including tens of thousands of sheep. It is estimated at this point only 450 navajo churro sheep remained. In the 1970s The Navajo Sheep Project was launched in an effort to preserve the breed and revitalize Navajo and Hispanic sheep farming. This was somewhat successful and today over 8,000 Navajo Churro Sheep exist. With females reaching around 90 to 130lbs (40 to 60kgs) and males reaching roughly 120 to 185lbs (55 to 85kgs) in weight, the Navajo churro is a smaller sheep with long, thin tails, horizontal ears, narrow bodies, long legs, and a double coat. Most rams have horns, either two or four, but may occasionally have none. Additionally while ewes typically lack horns, females with horns are not uncommon. Churros come in a variety of colors, including reds, browns, black, white, and mixes, and color may change with age, and may have come in color patterns, such as eye patches and hip spots. Mothers typically give birth to twins and under ideal conditions a Navajo Churro may live upwards of 15 years.

Peep is a jacob sheep right? Just curious since I recently saw some and her horns look just like that of a jacob sheep
peep is a mix between two different sheep!
Her father is a Navajo-churro sheep
Tumblr media
And her mom is a Black Katahdin Sheep!
Tumblr media
well I should say that they are based off of these two breeds. In reality if there was an offspring between these two sheep the sheep would probably be black, because dark colors tend to be the dominant allele over the the lighter unless the black sheep is heterozygous, then there’s a small chance that peep would inherit a ressesive lighter color allele from her mom. And also peep shows codominance in her fur color (being white and brown) and that adds another layer of genetic tomfoolery that makes it even less likely that she would look the way she does. ALSO the more than 2 horns trait is caused by a mutation, and is recessive and sex linked, and I don’t know how that would work if peeps mom gave peep the X chromosome that coded for horns (if it was even in her genotype) what would happen there.
so peep is a genetic anomaly, but she also stands on two legs and is in college and can speak so what does it really matter SKJASAGD
ok once again this is a much longer answer than you probably wanted, sorry abt that askjdsfkjfds she was almost going to be a Jacob sheep but I wanted her fur to look like a toasted marshmallow then I found the churro sheep

Heyo, a friend linked me your post asking for sheep suggestions. I work pretty much excullusively with wool breeds so I don't have a lot of feedback if you want to stay with haired breeds, but if you're just wanting interesting sheep suggestions, allow me to pitch Navajo-Churro sheep!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Uhhhhh I love them!
A little about them:
Navajo-Churro were developed from the Iberian Churra - the first sheep brought to the Americas by the Conquistadors. These Spanish sheep were traded with the Dine’ (Navajo people) who appreciated the sheep for their meat, milk and wool. The famous Navajo textiles are woven from Navajo-Churro wool. And Navajo-Churro fleece is admired for its luster, durability and amazing variety of natural colors.
The Dine’ live in the Four Corners area of Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Utah and the Navajo-Churro evolved in this arid and unique landscape. Persecution by the US Government decimated their herds several times over the centuries and very few Navajo-Churro sheep survived. Dine’ shepherds cherished their "old style" sheep and were responsible for saving the Navajo-Churro breed from extinction. But by 1977, the sheep had dwindled to less than 500 head so Dr. Lyle McNeal formed the Navajo Sheep Project to revitalize this breed and keep it from further depletion. [source]
Their horns are amazing.
Soay are actually a wool breed, but they roo, so not really a commercial wool product. These are amazing but sadly probably not very suited to the lush, relatively wet midatlantic. Thank you so much for sharing them with me!!

do you know about jacobs sheep?? apologies if someone/me hasasked you this already
YEAH!!! Jacob's sheep are considered a polycerate (many horn) since hey they do have 4-6 horns but that's actually not unique to them! They're honestly pretty interesting, less for the horns and more because they're honestly enigmatic?
Like, they just showed up in Britain one day and have been kept for centuries and due to the lack of records, it's hard to tell who they were bred from or how exactly they became piebald esp since piebald pattern in sheep is a double recessive (one for black wool and the other for the pattern) + horn genetics is a bit wonky as in order of dominance it goes: polled (no horn)>4 horn>2 horn
Definitely a good example of ornamental sheep as they can be outclassed by other breeds in terms of production; the piebald pattern being a wool quality detriment as the black wool occasionally grows different than the white wool
Personally, the manx loaghtan looks a bit cooler and the navajo-churro sound cooler (both polycerates)
Anyways

I think a lot of people irl and on twitter assume I am a run of the mill media obssessed autist, with a focus on toku and ffxiv. And that's not wrong per se I can and WILL relate everything to Kamen Rider
but they only think that because farming doesn't come up very often, so I never have a chance to explain my dream chicken coop/rabbit hutch, nor point out the pros and cons of guardian geese - which really is a loss on their part. Who doesn't want to hear about navajo-churros and why they are the most awesomest of sheep??? DO YOU PEOPLE NOT WANT TO KNOW ABOUT CAMEL MILK AND HOW HEALTHY IT IS??? YOU CAN SPIN WOOL RIGHT OFF ANGORA RABBITS! JUST RIGHT OFF THEM GUYS!
