Romance Anime Starter List
I don’t know about you guys, but I’m sick and tired of seeing “Top ___ Best Anime of All Time” lists that are nothing but shounen. So, with "My Happy Marriage" getting a little attention from the anime community, I wanted to put together a list of some romance anime that I consider good “starters” for the genre. Because if I were just now becoming an anime fan, I’d think all there was to offer was shounen action series.
And by “starters” I mean basic stuff that’s not too…out there, and actually involves the characters getting together instead of just harems or using romance as a side plot (sorry Ouran High School Host Club and My Next Life as a Villainess).
So if you’re new to anime and want stuff that’s not just guys beating the shit out of each other (which is also fun, don’t get me wrong), here are some basics.
Taisho Maiden Fairy Tale- When the pessimistic Tamahiko Shima loses all function in his right arm, his family sends him away to live in the mountains with the cheerful, hard working Yuzuki Tachibana…who was purchased by the Shima family to pay off her family’s debts and basically act as a caretaker/future bride for Tamahiko so they’d never have to deal with him again. It’s a more cheerful version of My Happy Marriage (without the supernatural stuff), except in this one, the guy is the one who has massive self-esteem issues and an abusive family. There are still very serious themes, but ultimately it’s not meant to make you cry every episode. I swear it’s so good, but nobody watched it!
Tumblr media
Horimiya- A slice of life in which pretty and popular high school queen bee Hori, finds out her quiet, unassuming classmate Miyamura is hiding piercings and tattoos that could get him expelled. The two gradually find out more about each other and get together in the most realistic way I’ve seen depicted in an anime. It’s also fucking hysterical and genuinely emotional.
Tumblr media
Recovery of an MMO Junkie- Another slice of life that focuses on two adults who meet in an MMO game without realizing they also know each other in real life. I don’t want to say much more than that. It’s adorable, and the main character is so relatable it hurts.
Tumblr media
Love with Yamada-kun at Level 999- Speaking of MMOs, this is a newer series about Akane Kinoshita, a college first year who’s reeling from a bad break up. In an attempt to get back at her ex, she winds up meeting Akito Yamada, a popular gamer who happens to be in her guild in the MMO they both play at an IRL meetup. The two go from acquaintances to something more as they keep running into each other. Even more relatable main characters and just wholesome relationships all around.
Tumblr media
Snow White With The Red Hair- A fantasy in which an apothecary named Shirayuki (meaning, you guessed it, “snow white”) runs away from her home in order to escape becoming the concubine of her town’s prince. While fleeing, she is rescued by Zen, the prince of a neighboring country, and she ends up becoming an herbalist to repay him. It's super cute with some genuinely swoon worthy moments and a couple that just works so well together. I have a habit of comparing this to Akatsuki no Yona, even though the two aren’t really that alike. This is more romance driven while Akatsuki no Yona is more of a serious historical fantasy with romance elements (Yona manga is amazing, but the anime barely scratches the surface, so that’s why I didn’t include it).
Tumblr media
Sasaki to Miyano- When the shy, easily flustered Miyano meets Sasaki, a cool “delinquent” upperclassmen, the two end up bonding over manga…specifically BL manga. That’s right, Miyano is a fudanshi, but due to his small stature and somewhat feminine appearance, he’s constantly trying to convince others that he’s not interested in having his own love story where he’d be reduced to a stereotypical doe-eyed uke. But as Sasaki and Miyano spend more time together, they realize that what they have is more than friendship, and they have to come to terms with their own perception of gay relationships. This is my favorite romance of all time. It’s a slow burn, but boy is it worth it. Their relationship is so natural and realistic, just like Horimiya. Just two people hanging out and bonding over things the way people do in real life!
Tumblr media
Given: The story of some boys in a band with trauma. Enough said. It's great. Go watch it.
Tumblr media
Bloom Into You- Yuu Koito is a high school girl who’s been waiting her whole life for her own perfect romance to start…but when she receives a confession, she realizes she doesn’t know how to respond when she’s just not into the guy. And then she gets another confession…this time from the cool student council president Touko Nanami, who basically jumpstarts her lesbian awakening. Very cute story about how we perceive the concept of love vs actually feeling it. Also has a canonically aro/ace side character, so that’s a win for me. Another show like this is Adachi to Shimamura (but I honestly don’t remember much about it. It just didn’t stick with me as much).
Tumblr media
Ore Monogatari- Takeo Gouda is a tall, bulky high school first year with a sensitive heart of gold. He wants nothing more than to find his own true love, but most girls are intimidated by his enormous stature, and they end up falling for his conventionally attractive friend instead. That is, until he meets the tiny, adorable Rinko Yamato. He falls in love instantly, but he’s sure she’s interested in his best friend like everyone else, so he vows to help get them together, even though his heart is breaking. Peak himbo behavior. Pure of heart, dumb of ass.
Tumblr media
Yuri on Ice- Yes it’s the gay figure skating anime everyone knows. And yes it’s a fucking romance, okay? I will die on this hill. The romance between Viktor and Yuri is just as important as the plot!
Tumblr media
Kaguya-sama Love Is War- Two insanely smart high school students both have a crush on the other, but since they’re…you know…high schoolers, neither of them wants to admit it first. So they come up with increasingly convoluted plans to get the other to confess first. This will go down as one of the best of all time. It’s a hilarious yet poignant modern classic.
Tumblr media
Fruits Basket- I’ve talked about it before and I’ll talk about it again. A romance “comedy” that slowly morphs into a drama about a girl named Tohru who finds herself living with the mysterious Sohma family after her mother dies. Little does she know, the Sohmas are the victims of a  (somewhat silly, but ultimately tragic) curse that she must fight to break. Even though I’m more into it for the family drama, the romance is still top tier and plays an important role in the story. This is my second favorite anime of all time, and it’s a classic for a reason. If anyone hasn’t watched it yet, GO WATCH IT! IT WILL RIP YOU TO SHREDS!
Tumblr media
And now for some honorable mentions that didn't quite fit into the regular list:
Ride Your Wave- A movie about a surfer who falls in love with a firefighter……and I’m not going to say any more than that. Go into it blind. If you like stuff like Your Name, this is a good one to watch.
Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun- A comedy about a high school girl who finds out the upperclassman she has a crush on is actually a shoujo manga artist, and no matter how she tries to confess to him, he just never gets it.
Tumblr media
The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague- A slow burn slice of life that focuses on a guy with ice powers who has a crush on his coworker. That’s it. That’s the show. When I say slow, I mean SLOW. It’s perfectly cute and fluffy, but my god does it take forever to get anywhere with these two.
Skip to Loafer- A high strung, small town girl decides to go to high school in Tokyo, where she meets a variety of classmates, including the laid back Sousuke Shima. The unlikely pair become friends, and soon enough, she starts to feel something more than friendship. The only reason I didn’t include it in the main list is because they don’t get together by the end of the first season, but it’s still really cute (also canonically trans character for the win!?)
Tumblr media
So that’s my starter list. And no, I didn’t include Toradora, even though it’s a classic. I know it’s blasphemous, but I like it more as a comedy than a romance. It kinda lost me with the ending. But anyway, maybe someone will find something they like. Or maybe you'll just want to roast me and my picks 😅

Autistic Anime Boys Side B Round 1 Match 2
Tumblr media
Propaganda:
Karna -
"Canonically comes across as unintentionally cold and blunt to others due to his straightforwardness and honesty, he is consistently drawn with a flat, unexpressive face, one of his canon dislikes is listed as being 'The word "communication skill" and multiple issues of his stem from his inability to properly communicate what he means to say to others without them misinterpreting it due how he talks and looks….despite this there's an incident in the mobile game where he has a multi-page spiel about how much he admires the fighting spirit of crabs. He's also projected his rival onto at least TWO people including a 3 week old guy because he's so obsessed with fighting the guy again and I'd argue that counts as a kind of hyperfixation, not to mention how he often tries to relate things back to his divine father and his general one track, hyperfocused mentality whenever he's convinced something needs to be done a certain way. This man is autistic as hell."
Takeo -
"He’s a very straight-forward, honest high schooler, who doesn’t understand social conventions but is also so oblivious that he rarely notices when he breaks one (though he is in fact aware of his own obliviousness, and spends a lot of time worrying that he fucked something up.) He’s very loud, enthusiastic, and earnest about things, and is also a physically massive and not conventionally attractive guy, so a lot of people initially dislike or are frightened by him, but if they spend more time around him, they often realize he’s actually an incredibly good person. Sometimes it’s because they just understand his personality better with time, sometimes it’s because they see him leap to help others no matter how dangerous the situation is (usually the danger is something physical, but he has put himself at risk for other types of dangers, like having his beloved girlfriend stolen by a cool pastry chef)."

My Love Story!!! isn't just a trope subversion of "cute girl gets with ugly guy". A big thing with the story is Yamato thinks Takeo is HOT. Like yes she loves his personality but its really his looks that she is usually focusing on. AND THATS A GOOD THING.
Think of it this way, "You have a great personality" is usually used as a shorthand in media to highlight physical lacking. You have to get by having a great personality because you're ugly. Thats also what Takeo has been told before. He's not beautiful or an ikemen like Makoto but he's kind and purehearted, funny and great but he's in competition with Makoto and he's not conventionally attractive they don't expect him to get a girlfriend and therefore he's not enough. This is even brought up by Makoto's sister: no one would date him because he's not conventionally attractive.
We're AWARE of this because we're aware of shoujo troupes. We're aware of the funny fat friend. In our culture, in the real world.
Now before I bring up the subversion of Takeo, because obviously thats a big theme in My love story i want to bring up Yamato. If Takeo is a subversion of Shoujo male leads, Yamamoto is a subversion of Shounen romance female leads. "How?" You ask, "Yamamoto is obviously adorable and conventonally attractive' and to that i say YES, You are so correct! Thats the point. She's beautiful and clumsy and adorable and thats why she's a subversion.
She is so much morte than a pretty face, even when we first meet her trying to court Takeo we find a hobby: Baking. And obviously Takeo likes to eat.
The real subverion of My love story obviously comes by their love. But its so much more than "Cute girl loves ugly guy". Its the fact that Takeo does think Rinko is cute, but more importasntly its Takeo caring about her interest. He takes her to cafes and is aware of her baking hobby. He's more in love with Rinko than her body. She's so much more than a "cute girl"
and on the flip side: RINKO IS HORNY AS FUCK! There are three episodes that continuosly show us how Horny on main Rinko is. The fanservice isn't on Rinko its on Takeo. She thinks he's HOT. Yes she loves his personality but He's HOT. To her Takeo isn't "the ugly guy" he's a hot guy.

Doing the first of my twice yearly "Big Blu-ray Sale" posts, with as much advance notice as I can possibly manage:
Tomorrow (7/16/2023), all three volumes of Revolutionary Girl Utena will be added to RightStuf's Birthday Sale. Volumes 1 and 2 (Eps. 1-13, 14-26) will be $25 each, and Volume 3 (Eps. 27-39 + Adolescence of Utena) will be $40. That's a teensy bit more expensive than the "One Day Sale" price they sometimes do, where all together they cost about $80, but still, <$100 for all of Utena is pretty good in my book, especially for the jump in quality versus what's on YouTube:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also: The Big O will be on sale for $15, which is a steal!
And if neither of these are up your alley but you are interested in picking up physical copies of anime, set a reminder to check the website again at the end of the month. Typically, they re-run all of their big "One Day Sales" all at once, plus anything that's on normal sale is still available to pick up, so that would be the best time to check.
Also, Sentai Filmworks is having their own sale, which is largely at parity or better than RightStuf's sale (but only for stuff Sentai Filmworks has licensed), such as Ore Monogatari/My Love Story for $5.

That's even more of a steal than The Big O!

S𝕖𝕔𝕣𝕖𝕥'𝕤 𝕠𝕦𝕥⌇𝙼𝚊𝚔𝚘𝚝𝚘 𝚂𝚞𝚗𝚊𝚔𝚊𝚠𝚊 𝚡 𝚁𝚎𝚊𝚍𝚎𝚛⌇𝖬𝗒 𝖫𝗈𝗏𝖾 𝖲𝗍𝗈𝗋𝗒!!
C𝕙𝕒𝕡𝕥𝕖𝕣  O𝕟𝕖
You might have been born in the same womb. But when it came to looks and personality, you two were nothing alike. Your brother, Takeo Gouda, was strong and manly, almost like a gorilla; he might even start to resemble one. He’s also sweet and caring. So, you often wondered how you were related. Since you looked nothing like him, and you were nothing like him.
You might have been twins, but that doesn't prove anything. At least not to you. Your dad likes to tell you how sweet and kind you are and that you’re the sweetest girl in the world. And your mom always tells you how such beauty and grace was born out of her stomach. That, in the womb, you stole all of Takeo’s beauty, so that’s why your beauty shines brighter than anybody else’s.
You and Takeo share the same golden heart, but you just won’t admit it. In your head, you're trying your best to be like Takeo—kind and selfless; otherwise, you would never feel part of this family. You’re so in your head that the thought of being kind out of your own volition was impossible to believe; you did it to be like Takeo, not because you’re nice.
You and your brother were close, but as you grew older, you grew further and further apart. You used to be able to read him like a book, but now it seems like you guys are just not in sync anymore. Nevertheless, you knew something had changed in him these past few days. He’s been acting skittish, always daydreaming during dinner, laughing to himself, and telling you how happy and fulfilled in life he has become.
"How weird..." you said to yourself, looking at Takeo enthusiastically typing on his phone.
Suddenly, he got up and exclaimed, "I’m heading out!" He shuffled quickly to get up and head towards the front door to put on his shoes.
"Hey, wait up!" You blocked the door with your body, ready to interrogate him. "Where do you think you’re going?"
He took a minute to come up with an answer, starting to sweat from the tension, as lying was something he had trouble doing. "Umm... to meet up with some friends?" He questioned, not sure if that was the answer he wanted to go with.
"You don’t seem so sure for someone who was excited to go out a second ago." You pushed even more.
You could see the sweat drop from his face; he was clearly hiding something, something he clearly wanted to tell me but was not sure if he should.
His face was turning red from biting his lips so hard that he forgot to breathe.
"You breathing?"
He shook his head, scared that if he spoke, he would spill out his secret.
"So, is it a girl?"
All of a sudden, he started coughing profusely, saying, "I-i got to go!" He let out while dying in his shoulder.
He lifted you up, plopped you away from the door, and quickly rushed to put on his shoes.
You grabbed him by his shirt, making him stop what he was doing. "Takeo, wait."
He looked at you, his face still full of sweat, as he felt that you were going to interrogate him even more. "Y-yes" He managed to let out.
"Look, I get it. You have things you don’t want people to know, especially your family. But please, Takeo, remember that I’m your sister, your twin sister. I’m always here if you need me; I’ll never turn you away." You said it confidently, seeing if he'd fall for your words. You did mean what you said, of course, but this has been going on for too long for you to not pull out the ‘we are family’ card.
He gulped as he decided whether or not to tell you. "Y/N…"
"Yes!" You exclaimed, ears wide open.
"I…I.."
"Yes, Takeo?"
"I-I’ve got to go!" He said, getting out of the house. "But I promise, I promise, I’ll tell you soon. Very soon, Y/N!"
He left you dumbfounded—dumbfounded by the fact that even after you pulled out the irresistible card, he didn’t tell you.
Something smelled fishy, and you had to know!
You run up to Sunakawa’s house, which is just next door, just like Takeo would usually do. You barge into his room without knocking, surprising him since he expected Takeo and not you."Sunakawa! You have to tell me what’s going on with Takeo!"
He put down the book he was reading and let out a sigh. He promised Takeo he wouldn’t spill the beans and would let him tell her at his own pace, but this has been going on for too long. He’s been tortured for too long by dealing with his shtick. From being dragged along to a mixer to getting used like a kissing doll, he had enough of Takeo’s buffoonery.
"I can’t; I promised-"
"C’mon, you can’t leave me out of this." You pleaded, kneeling down in front of him as he sat in his desk chair. "I’m your best friend’s sister; I’m your only friend’s sister. You can’t tell me that doesn’t mean anything?"
He seemed slightly annoyed that you had to mention that he only had one friend. "Fine, but you can’t tell Takeo I told you."
You sat, legs crossed, in front of him, listening carefully to what he had to say. You and Sunakawa had a very weird relationship. You obviously knew him from childhood, but that didn’t exactly make you friends. It was more like acquaintances who've known each other for more than a decade. Well, I guess you two were more than acquaintances…
"So…?" You waited as he thought about whether or not he would tell you. But finally, he decided to tell you, after a long sigh of disappointment in himself for letting him cave to you. "He has a girlfriend."
"…" You shot up from where you sat and gasped very loudly, "Really!?"
You gripped his arms and shook him. "Does he really!?" You pulled him closer to your face, awaiting his answer. Eyes staring deeply into his, patiently awaiting his answer.
He gave out a small chuckle, laughing at your antics, and said, "Yes, really," and gently pushed away.
"Oh, sorry, I didn’t mean to..." You apologized, realizing how you might have made him uncomfortable with just how close you were.
"No, it’s okay. But don’t forget. You did not hear this from me."
"Of course, I would never betray you."
"Sunakawa told me." You let out a sigh as you felt a glare behind you for betraying a promise.
All three stood in the living room as you confronted Takeo about his so-called girlfriend’.
Takeo shot a glare towards Sunakawa, who stood behind you, and as he did, he looked away, pretending not to notice his look.
He still doesn’t know why he told you because you clearly can’t keep a secret to save your life, just like your brother.
"Sorry, I couldn’t keep it in." You looked back at Sunakawa. "But you! You can’t keep this kind of secret from me!" You stated this disappointedly, turning back towards your brother.
"B-but Y/N, I didn’t know how you would react…"
"What do you mean?" You shrugged your shoulders, looking away, feeling slightly guilty.
"Remember that time when you fought a girl because she liked Suna over me?"
That wasn’t the only reason you fought her…
"Meh, I was six. You can’t blame me for sticking up for you. You were saying that you were in love with her. And she rejected you and went for your best friend. In my opinion, she deserved everything that came to her." You said that, proudly remembering that fight.
"And that time when you cursed at a girl because she said I was weird."
"Well… That was five years ago, when I was eleven. How can you blame me for standing up for you? That girl had no right to call you that; only I can." You confidently stated this, slowly starting to see where he was coming from when he said he didn’t know how you’d react.
He had a huge smile on his face when, suddenly, you got tackled into a bear hug. "Oh, Y/N. I love you so much. You’ll definitely be the first to meet Yamato!" Lifting you off your feet and swaying you left and right.
"Can’t…breath…" You mumbled, your life flashing before your eyes.
He freed you from his arms, letting you breathe. "Tomorrow! You’re going to meet her tomorrow!" he said, holding your hands and jumping up and down like a little kid. "I’ll go see her right now and tell her! She’ll be so excited!" He squealed, running off to go see his girlfriend.
"Well, that wasn’t so bad, was it?" You turned around towards Sunakawa, who still looked disappointed at you for calling him out. "I’m so sorry. I promise I couldn’t keep it in; I just couldn’t lie to my brother. Could you ever find it in your heart to forgive me?"
You walked closer to him, giving him puppy eyes. He took a step back as he was stunned by how close you were. "Y-yeah, of course."
"Good, cause I don’t want to have bad blood between us." You said this, relieved from the thought you may have upset him.
"Well, it’s not like I didn’t expect it. You’re a bad liar; I can’t really blame you." He insulted you casually, probably because of the earlier comment about him having no friends. "But I’m not sharing with you any more secrets; you can’t be trusted with that big mouth of yours."
He looked at you with a slight smirk. "Wha-? I wouldn’t go that far. I mean, bad liar, maybe. But not sharing with me your secrets? I’m offended." You smirked back.
"Offended?" He questioned, moving closer to you. "Sure, I’ll share with you a secret, but you can’t tell anyone." He leaned down at you and looked you straight in the eyes.
You started to sweat, nervously laughing as you avoided his eyes. ‘So close…’ you thought, your cheeks slowly turning red.
He opened his mouth and slowly whispered, "I’m going home."
He stood back up straight, a smirk still plastered on his face.
"What? Wait, that wasn’t even a secret-"
He walked toward the door, ready to leave. "Hey! I’m not finished." You ran up to him.
He turned around for the last time and smiled at you before leaving home for the apartment next door.
"Jerk" You murmured under your breath as he left.
