I think The World We Make was definitely a very good book. However, it felt like the actions of the character’s didn’t trigger as much of an emotional response in the other characters as in the first book? One of the many things I rlly liked abt the city we became is that you would see what one chara was doing through their pov, and so see their motivations. Then you’d get to see what that action/behavior looked like to someone else and how that influenced their actions and motivations in the next chapter. Because of the relatively faster pacing in comparison to time twwm takes up, tho, it kinda felt like the characters had little effect on the world around them. Like when Padmini told the others that Manny was leaving, we didn’t see their reactions. They were briefly summarized, but it didn’t talk about how he affected the group as a whole. It made this found family that the first book spend the whole time building seem fragile and trivial, making it take a backseat to to wider world-ending stuff.

This effect wasn’t as apparent in the romantic relationships, tho, which made them seem to take precedent in the character’s lives over other relationships. Don’t get me wrong, I really liked the dynamic between Manny and Neek and I’m glad the author explored it, but I didn’t like how it had more narrative weight than the platonic and familial relationships that the first book was built on. It was primarily the romantic connection between them that caused Manny to stay in New York, and that felt frustrating because it almost overshadowed Manny’s other reasons for staying in NYC, like exercising his autonomy and choosing to be kind and build relationships.

This isn’t really well-articulated I know, but the basic gist of it is that there were so many chances for interpersonal conflict and conflict resolution that just weren’t explored. And I get why, that it wasn’t feasible for the author to do it all, and that you can only have so many themes in a book without its message being diluted (and it did have a really well-done message I think, helped me think about oppression as imposing universal homogeneity and made me check some of my own racist bs that I’ve absorbed). But still, I was somewhat disappointed by this. I would still absolutely recommend both The City We Became and The World We Make and I plan to read them again myself still.
