I practiced some heads! And skeletons as well! I tried a new way to draw my heads because they we’re looking weird sometimes. It’s not much but my tablet was dying lol I also drew floppy! (Again) it’s just some sketches for fun and for practice!

It's kinda weird between Hugo Punch and Hall, Punch is sort of like personality disorder but it was put into the story that he's the result of Hall possessing Jimmy- So I just made it to where, when Punch is clearly in control, then he tries to act more like his own person, like Jimmy's comedy act sort of. However, Punch is still Hall in the end, to what purpose why Hugo Hall would sort of pretend to be Punch while also being himself, I have no idea yet- I need to figure that out.

Character Animation Exploration

Evelyn / Stylisation Test

For my second project, where we have to compile 1 second of animation per week, I wanted to explore my character Evelyn. I wanted to lean into her unearthlyness, and wanted to use some new character animation techniques to elevate that theme. She has a large connection to gold strings so I wanted to try make it seemed like she was made from them.

I decided to look at a couple existing projects for some inspiration of how to pull this off. First I looked at Soul because I always remember the way the Jerries were animated always felt entrancing. I love how they used a glow effect around their outlines to help it stand out within the films 3D artstyle. Having that opaque film helps to keep their form fell solid instead of simply being floating lines.

I also wanted to have a look at Wolfwalkers for some inspiration and in particular, the techniques and aesthetics used in their “wolfvision” segments. It was designed to be very charcoal-like and flowing to really capture the movement but what grabbed me most was this concept image I found in the ‘Art of Wolfwalkers’ book. I loved how the smudged messy filling manage to enhance that bright outline andthought I could put something similar into Evelyn.

I did an initial concept drawing for her, playing around with her scale a bit but ended up zooming out quite far because it limited the scope of her movement. I also wanted to try to even more make her feel like she doesnt belong in that environment, push her vibrosity a bit more. The colours also needed tweaking.

In the final animation, I loosened her form alot especially in her hair and choose to define her form more with a mix between the Jerries’ filling and the charcoal vibe of wolfwalkers. To enhance her outline, I duplicated the line art layer then put a glow effect on the clone. This kept her outline sharp whilst still give the illusion of it emitting light. And by making the background more abstract I think I greatly succeed in making her feel distinct and vibrant.
