Salt Cathedral of Zipaquira - Bogota
Salt Cathedral of Zipaquira – Bogota
Whilst researching things to do and see in Bogota I found the Salt Cathedral, more accurately, the Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá.  This is my third post about Bogota, in reality I think it was my sixth there. Like I said in my first post on Bogota, I was taking things easy. Finally I was sleeping normally. I had forgotten what a full night’s sleep felt like without coughing. Bogota was my recoup…

Zipaquirá, the Salt Cathedral. Zipaquirá, Colombia
Zipaquira, which is usually described as Colombia’s Salt Cathedral, is located about 600 feet underground in a former salt mine located in Zipaquirá, just outside Bogotá. I visited this place for the first time several years ago and had a chance to make a brief visit again in October 2022, while taking a group of Master’s students on a Global Field Seminar to Colombia. The cathedral is an…

The Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá is an underground Roman Catholic church built within the tunnels of a salt mine 200 metres (660 ft) underground in a halite mountain near the city of Zipaquirá, in Cundinamarca, Colombia. It is a tourist destination and place of pilgrimage in the country. The temple at the bottom has three sections, representing the birth, life, and death of Jesus. The icons, ornaments and architectural details are hand carved in the halite rock. Some marble sculptures are included. The cathedral is considered one of the most notable achievements of Colombian architecture, being described as a "Jewel of Modern Architecture". The cathedral represents a valuable cultural, environmental and religious patrimony for the Colombian people. #people #architecture #colombia #environmental #travelswithkambiz #travelphotography #cathedral #church #flightattendantlifestyle #flightattendantlife #flightattendant #flightattendantstories #flightattendantslife #flightattendantsofcolor #flightattendantafterwork #flightattendantadventures #cabincrewlife #cabincrew #surftheworld #funtravel (at Salt Cathedral of Zipaquira) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cl2m9jVMwOp/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Nestled more than 650 feet underground in the city of Zipaquirá, Colombia is an unlikely tourist destination: a salt mine turned cathedral, complete with a 50-foot high glowing cross.  What began as a small altar where 1800’s miners prayed for their safety has become an enormous chapel with seating for 8,000 Sunday worshippers. It also offers daily tours for pilgrims and tourists eager to visit the Zipaquira Salt Cathedral in Colombia.
Equal parts tourist trap and architectural marvel, the Zipaquira Salt Cathedral is a cool addition to your Bogotá itinerary.  If you’ve got an extra day and want to escape the bustle of the city, I’ve got all the details on planning a visit. Including how to get to Zipaquira, the history of the mine, and what to see at Colombia’s salt cathedral.

(via Colombia's Salt Cathedral Is A Marvel Of Architecture And A Popular House Of Worship : NPR)
Colombia's Salt Cathedral is located about 600 feet underground, in a former salt mine in Zipaquirá, just outside Bogotá. It's especially busy during Easter, with thousands attending services marking the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ.
But the cathedral is also an architectural wonder, built in the caverns and tunnels left behind by miners, who extracted millions of tons of rock salt starting two centuries ago.
At the bottom, the temple opens up to reveal three naves representing the birth, life and death of Christ. There is a basilica dome, chandeliers and an enormous, floor-to-ceiling cross illuminated with purple lights. The pews are jammed with the faithful and when a choir breaks into song ahead of Mass, the sound envelops the chamber.

Me watching an agronomy online class:
My brain: Zipaquirá! Me: what? o_O Brain: Zipaquirá, that city in Colombia you went to. Me: yes, but out of nowhere... Brain: Zipaquirá! You went there 4 years ago! It's that place that has the Salt Cathedral! Me: I KNOW! BUT WHY IS IT RELEVANT NOW? Brain: It's not, but you already got distracted and lost the last 5 minutes of video thinking about it, and will lose another 5 minutes creating a post about it. Me: fuck..
