Re-reading Darwin's Game, it's quite incredible how much happened in the Hunting Game event, not even foreshadowing but actions and words that take their full meanings some 50 chapters later.

Let's start with the elephant in the room: Oboro. Oboro made it so Kaname would win, and says he wants to "make him his King". We think it's Oboro being Oboro, but what's happening is Oboro decided that Kaname is suitable for next GM. He's even telling the current GM that Kaname is a better fit than him.

Second element: the reason why. Izaya and Oboro had this thing planned where they'd choose the "next alpha", after the main mover of things, One/King, had gotten offed. They expressly want someone strong who won't stoop low, because they're both aware it's about humankind's survival. We're not sure how aware of the details Oboro is at this point, but Izaya is fully aware of that. They're picking a next "alpha candidate", and Kaname appears, and doesn't just pass Oboro's test of "wouldn't it be easier to kill the islanders ourselves? this is how you win" with the usual "that's inhumane". He goes further than that and says that he never blamed Darwin's Game for the deaths - he always took full and complete responsibility for killing, injuring, etc. Which is what Izaya lacked. THIS is what Oboro saw in Kaname as a future Protector.

But the third element is incredible to me: Arabaki. Arabaki, aka Doume-Worldline!Izaya, has entrusted all the islanders to Kaname, not to Izaya. He tells the islanders to "think of [Kaname's] words as [his own]" which is not only, a lot coming from someone who's a living god, it's entrusting his accountability and power and role to Kaname. He, too, had already chosen Kaname as the next GM. It's a message sent to Izaya.

At this point Izaya doesn't have a good pick. He's given what he could to whom he could, making Executioners like Oboro and young!Seigen, and his interest in Kaname has barely begun. By the next time they "meet", he'll be fully with the prominent Sunset Ravens, and will have decided already that of all the realm of possibility, he's going to pick either Kaname, or Rain.

It ends up being Rain, but it's interesting that by the end of chapter 50, so much had already happened. The endgame, after the Pirate game and the start of the Greed invasion, sometimes feels a bit like it's just dropped on the story. And it's meant to be a disruption! But the Hunting Game? That was FULL of already-existing setups that you'll have forgotten, yet they add reread value.

Goodness I love this story.

Episode 4’s ending matched up exactly with the final panel of Volume 4: Chapter 13.By the halfway point, Episode 5’s ending corresponded to the ending of Chapter 15. Darwin’s Game Episode 6 then finishes up Volume 4.The Shibuya Treasure Hunt story arc ends with Chapter 21 of Volume 6, but that was not the best stopping point. So, once again, Kaname starts gathering allies to his side, starting with a player named Ouji Kimihiko, a young man with a weekend warrior bod.Kaname suspects this Hunting Game Event has another hidden secret. The mystery about the island begins to grow when they find a statue covered in old vines that they recognize as a landmark from their home in Japan. Just where in the world are they?Another mystery is the identity of the creatures listed at the top of the point chart. The shape is blurred out, but they’re worth 200 points each. The boss alone is an event-ending 10,000 points, but what challenges will these creatures offer? Summary:

High school student Kaname Sudou receives an invitation from a classmate to play Darwin's Game, a mobile game he has never heard of. However, as soon as he opens the application, a green snake suddenly pops out from his phone screen and bites his neck, leaving him unconscious. Waking up in the infirmary without any signs of a snake bite, he is told by the school to take the rest of the day off. Although he is puzzled by what has happened, he dismisses the surreal experience as a hallucination and boards the train home. Unfortunately, his curiosity gets the better of him and he uses the application once again. As the application appears to be just like any other battle game, Kaname breathes out a sigh of relief and decides to start his first match. However, the pleasant surprise is short-lived, as his in-game opponent unexpectedly appears right in front of him and attempts to hunt him down with a knife. As he desperately runs for his life, Kaname puts two and two together and realizes that Darwin's Game is not an ordinary game, but rather, it's a brutal fight for survival.
