So he sees these two eyes, and he's just like, frozen with fear. Deer in the headlights in this house with an open window and nice carpet. And he determines that the creature is small. And this is where I'm going "The Beetle? The beetle? Chapter two, do we get to meet the beetle?" And then we get another, another really long sentence. I highlighted this because I'm trying to find the longest sentence in this book. This one has only one semi colon, but hear me out, hear me out.

"Ordinarily, I believe that I have as high a spirit as the average man and as solid a resolution. But when one has been dragged through the valley of humiliation, and plunged again and again into the waters of bitterness and privation, a man can be constrained to a course of action of which, in his happier moments, he would have deemed himself incapable."

Hey, did you space out while I was reading that? Cause I almost spaced out and I was the one reading that.

Finally finishing off the last designs to create Speeder Parker's perfectly weird sinister six- sorry "Miniature Six."

I decided I wanted The Beetle's powers to stand out more so I specified her species to be a bombardier beetle and gave her a gun that shoots boiling hot caustic liquid. The Human fly's design is completely different cause eh I don't vibe with any of his canon looks. And the Rhino is now a big Russian beetle man. Yeah! :)

fighting for my life trying to get an audiobook of the beetle. none are available on libby through any of the three libraries I'm registered with, none of the libraries in my school network has a physical CD copy, comments on the librivox version says most of it is fine but one of the main speakers is almost unlistenable, amazon is throwing a fit and not letting me log in to audible, the only version I see available on barnes and noble is a TTS voice and I just cannot be having that. why has god cursed me.

He is the anti-fave, but could Sydney Atherton from The Beetle survive Castle Dracula?

Oh my good and dear friend, you will never guess the specific character who inspired this blog

I have terrible news for you: Sydney lives.

Dracula expects his guests to behave in a certain way and Sydney Atherton does not react as expected. He takes Arbitrary Skeptecism to the next level and starts gaslighting Dracula. Dracula tries to be spooky with "I never drink... wine" type sinister hints and Sydney calls him a slur about it. IF Sydney cuts himself, Dracula goes for his throat and Sydney's like "...and then what 😏" If Dracula takes his mirror Sydney decks him - and if Dracula responds in kind Sydney is a little too into it. Sydney can't be hypnotized but he lets the Girlies kiss him anyway - or maybe he seduces them with his excellent dancing. He gives Dracula unsolicited mustache care advice and it's actually good.

Dracula delays his own travel plans indefinitely because he needs to study Sydney like a bug.

So I very sorry to say, Sydney Atherton can survive Castle Dracula. (No one liked that)

Everything we know about The Beetle silent film:

It was released in 1919 and directed by Alexander Butler.

British-Australian actress Leal Douglas played Theb.

Tragically, the character was not called Theb in the script.

All major characters (except Percy and Augustus, it seems) were included and accurately depicted (checkmate, Dracula adaptations).

Ralph Leslie's performance as Robert Holt was praised.

A contemporary reviewer described the film as being mediocre and unintentionally hilarious (mood).

The production was criticized for being careless (on brand for anything associated with Richard Marsh, in my opinion). For instance, when the Temple of DoomTM anticlimactically exploded at the end, the studio lights were fully visible.

The sand dunes were reportedly impressive.

Theb's insect form was portrayed by a very unconvincing prop, which I can only assume was acquired at a Spirit Halloween.

Mercifully, the film is now lost to us.

chapter's not even about him. vaguely mentioned what is supposed to maybe be his library and I lost it. where the fuck is Sidney Atherton if hes still alive im going to so deeply wish he wasn't. crusty anglo man. ill punch atherton and his supposedly strong and manly British bones will simply flake apart under my epic huge meat fist and he will disintegrate until all thats left is one letter he kept on him at all times simply titled The Startling Narration of Robert Holt: Now You Fucked Up in ancient yiddish. im not breathing im hyperventilating at this point. i hope theres a date given for when Sidney died or will die so i can make it a reminder on my phone, and everyday once a year i will see it and do anything but pay respects to the man who had so many fucked up if true supposedly heroic moments, unlike “The Arab” in those last chapters.

#I know it's still giving Dick Marsh far too much credit #but I really can't not picture Robert Holt's entire hell here and throughout the story as a sort of tortured prelude to becoming something #like the Beetle #not done with any kindness obviously; but a very shitty metamorphosis just the same #upon death I have to wonder if this poor bastard really gets to stay dead #or if he molts his bare-assed Bobert shell and scuttles out into a new horrid existence #it'd track #robert holt #the beetle #the beetle weekly

i didn't read the beetle with everyone else but i have been following some of the commentary on it and tbh it is absolutely hilarious how much everyone absolutely loathed this book to the point of savage mockery of every facet
