#The varying levels of obeying the rule

I feel like some things in the Jurassic World movies are actually a step backward in the science-fiction zone from Jurassic Park III. I think that was the one where it was revealed that the raptors had a 'language' and complex communication that implied not just 'intelligence' but 'sapience'-- and I understand that some people felt this jumped the shark a little.
Tumblr media
(yes I know its a dream sequence, SHUT UP, they went there,)
But I remember seeing it when I was little and it made perfect sense to follow the original beats of how the raptors were scary in previous movies because they could interact with human environments like doors. They could use deception, 'tactics' and could not easily be contained.
If you're implying that these are beings that can reason, and further acting as if this reasoning ability is more threatening than the reasoning ability of a chimpanzee or something, then you're not afraid of 'what' is hunting you, but 'who.'
And that they could have reasons beyond being hungry bloodthirsty animals to be aggressive toward you.
That you have imprisoned 'people' and not 'animals' or even 'beneath animals' (creatures that have no natural existence, creations, toys, etc.)
But there's something disappointing to me about the stuff with Blue and Chris Pratt and all of that. It feels more like the fantasy of an animal tamer at a circus who has mastery of dangerous creatures (something that most modern circuses have cut) than it feels like a relationship with an intelligent creature capable of complex communication.
Tumblr media
(Tell me how this is different from the image of a 'lion tamer' with a chair between him and his 'beasts?')
It doesn't even feel like the level of communication that you should be having with your dog, or cat. But the raptors of course obey Chris Pratt's fantasy expertise and fantasy rules surrounding their social behaviors because the point is to depict Chris's character as skillful. 'The right way to approach raptors' is whatever the writers want it to be, unlike real dogs, cats, horses, bears, big cats, etc.
In reality, there are a lot of failed 'animal whisperers' out there, hucksters that fake being an animal behaviorist to impose fantasy-like rules on animals while abusing them, and dominance-based trainers who get sued for animal abuse if they aren't attacked by the animals first.
The Jurassic World movies seem to mitigate this idea with that the raptors are not natural creatures (but living 'in the wild' seems to be a conclusion for at least one of them?) and that they vary in intelligence level, with Blue being the most intelligent. My issue with this is that complex communication required for coordination also requires multiple parties that understand it. Why aren't the raptors basically having constant misunderstandings between their differing mentalities, or misunderstanding their handler who doesn't seem to vary his approach between them?
Basically my point is. The place Jurassic Park was going, it was fine. You made Frankenstein's Monsters, classic sci-fi dilemma. It kind of sucks that they downgraded Dinosaur Frankensteins into... the emotional replacement for circus animals in the modern day when we know dancing bears and elephants aren't ethical. However 'cool' they are on their own, that type of creature in a narrative is there to demonstrate the bravery of their 'tamer' and any 'trust' the animal has with that tamer is just the same. It's not about any creature actually making its own decisions, let alone a highly intelligent one.
It doesn't really matter that Jurassic World movies try to have it both ways, with some lip service to 'respecting' the raptors, and sometimes other dinosaurs, showing the antagonists being 'disrespectful' by contrast. If we continued the themes from JPIII, the type of 'respect' that is supposedly the 'good' position, is not the kind of respect you'd want to give to a person.

Illager hierarchy
I feel like Evokers hold the most power, they always get final say. Vindicators serve as their bodyguards and do stuff related to raids. Pillagers are the subjects/followers. Witches and other illagers are usually higher ups.
More detailed version below.
Evokers
• They are the highest rank. Usually only found in the woodland mansion. • They have 3 divisions, each with varying level of power.
• What division an evoker falls under may be dictated either by their family status or by their powers.
• The most powerful are those amongst the high council. They make decisions that affect everyone, in the mansion or not. Some Evokers in the high council are known to be unjust. Those who disobey the high council will face death. • The second most powerful are the Evokers that participate on raids. They work closely with the vindicators who plan the raids, often advising and instructing tactics and strategies. During the raid they must be obeyed. Illusioners, Geomancers, windcallers etc often fall into this division but are often deemed to be more powerful that a regular evoker in this division. • The lowest rank of evoker also resides in the mansion. They play no role in raids not the high council, but in other matters. They may be embassies or diplomats for the mansion. Sometimes they supervise projects commissioned by the high council.
Vindicators
They are second on the hierarchy
They have a vast range of roles in the mansion, what they do depends on their family status and physical strength.
The highest ranked role is helping plan raids, vindicators in this role tend to be well respected and live lavishly. They rule over the pillagers in accordance to the high council Evokers. They work closely with Evokers that take part in raid, but many of these vindicators choose not to take part in raids.
Also amongst the highest ranks are vindicators who were hand selected by Evokers to be their bodyguards. They are very loyal and close to their Evokers, often they will cover up the Evokers’ scandals because without them they wouldn’t have luxuries.
The second highest rank includes vindicators the take part in raids. They, also, are to be obeyed but what the evoker says will always overrule what they say. It is seen as a honourable role to have. They make sure what is obtained from the raid is distributed accordingly, most goes back to the mansion.
The lowest rank will often do jobs around the mansion. Whether that be cooking, looking after others or maintaining equipment. Sometimes they are raid captains.
Pillagers
The highest rank are the raid captains. They overlook and lead the raid. They take orders directly from those who plan the raids. Whilst not raiding, it is their responsibility to protect the outpost and the pillagers in it.
The lowest rank in the hierarchy are the regular pillagers. They live fairly normal lives but can be called upon to participate in raids and have some aspects of their lives dictated by those who are higher up. Poverty is common in this rank, unless they have a very successful raid.
———————————————————————
Witches
Witches aren’t counted as illagers, they choose how they want to live their lives freely. If they choose to involve themselves with illagers, their position on the hierarchy may depend on their abilities. Some may be kept by Evokers to be their doctors, witch would give them a higher rank. Some may be assigned to work in the mansion to make potions that may be used in raids.
Overall, they are usually in the middle of the hierarchy, but it isn’t unusual to seem them with Evokers in the high council or others Evokers.
Other types of Illager
This includes windcallers, geomancers, iceolgers, illusioners etc.
They choose how they want to spend their lives freely, but are open to working with illagers.
Due to their specialisations, they can be equal to Evokers. Their powers prove to be useful in many different ways in the mansion and on raids.
Thanks for reading until the end!

alt headcanons? Hmmm… or just something out of character?
I’ve been curious what it would’ve been like if your traveling musician Lan Quiren (where he didn’t become the acting sect leader, that fic of yours) met up with Cangse Sanren on his travels (either fresh out of the mountain or traveling as well) and ended up picking him as her spouse. Would they travel together? What would their little one look like? Would he eventually be called back to the Lan sect like in your fic when his brother realizes that lan zhan was a quiet child?
Just when Lan Qiren had started wondering if his fit of temper and rebellious display of independence – a level of independence that was in no way extreme for any member of the Lan sect but him, since he still faithfully obeyed all their rules and won glory in their name, which would be fine for everyone else but apparently wasn’t enough because he could have been at home raising his brother’s new child for him and doing all the sect paperwork too – had gone on long enough and it was time to return home to do all those things, Cangse Sanren found him.
“Of course you’re not going back,” she said briskly. “You’re doing exactly what you’re supposed to be doing at your age, aren’t you? Night-hunting and fighting evil and all that. Stop acting like such an old man!”
Lan Qiren gloomily foresaw his short beard not lasting until the morning, again, but decided to just give in and not fight it this time. It wasn’t worth the energy.
“Aren’t you supposed to be married by now?” he asked her. “I distinctly recall you saying something about not having much time on this earth and that you intended to maximize it…?”
Cangse Sanren smiled. “You’re right,” she said happily. “How kind of you to offer!”
It took Lan Qiren a moment.
“What,” he said. “Wait –”
“I am rather fond of Wei-gongzi,” she said, and he breathed a sigh of relief. “But he’ll be quite happy to marry you as a second wife, I think –”
He’d breathed that sigh too soon.
“He’s a servant, after all, and he gets really caught up in that sometimes, you know? He’s so worried that it’ll bring down my status, or my children’s – but a second wife, that ought to be fine, don’t you think? You’ll like him rather a lot, Qiren-gege, just you wait –”
“Lan only marry one wife!” Lan Qiren yelped, trying to hold back the floodgates. “Cangse Sanren –”
“No, Lan only have one dao companion,” Cangse Sanren said, grinning toothily. “That says nothing about their legal relationships, which historically have been far more varied.”
“That’s not true.”
“What if it is?”
Lan Qiren crossed his arms over his chest, feeling confident in his knowledge of his family history. “Fine,” he said, unknowingly sealing his doom. “Prove it.”
(“I just hope you know this is your fault,” Wei Changze hissed at him with a smile as they bowed to the lady immortal with her head cocked thoughtfully to one side as she regarded them, both their legs still sore from the mountain they’d climbed – alone, of course, because Cangse Sanren couldn’t go back herself. “And mine too, I’ll admit, but mostly yours.”
“How was I to know that her master was friends – or, uh, second or third or maybe fourth wives – with Lan Yi?” Lan Qiren hissed back. “It wasn’t in any of the books!”)

Deity Drop 6: Daclau-Sar
We’re back with more deities, and we’re starting off with another lesser divinity in the form of our first nascent demon lord!
With extremely rare exceptions, demon lords do not emerge fully-formed from the Abyss. Usually, such paragons of evil arise over time, though the starting point may vary. Some demons spend millenia rising through the ranks of their kind, while some mortal souls were so wicked that they immediately ascended to nascent status immediately upon entering the abyss.
No matter where they start, however, nascent demon lords have become powerful enough to take on a unique form separate from the rank and file of demonkind. Such a form may be influenced by who they were in life, or the circumstances of their ascension or the forms of evil they favored. However, they are not quite as powerful as true demon lords, and not strong enough claim an abyssal realm of their own. Instead, they lurk in semi-private corners of individual layers of the abyss, including those ruled by true demon lords, whom they live in concealed fear of, hoping to grow in power enough to ascend before they decide that the newcomer is a threat to their power.
In any case, that brings us to today’s subject: Daclau-Sar, the Lord of Carrion!
Long ago, the demon lord Lamashtu tricked the god Curchanus into a trap and slew him, taking his dominion over beasts, an act which fueled her ascension into true, terrible godhood, leaving the slain deity’s carcass to rot.
From his defiled corpse, however, arose a new demon-lord-to-be in the form of Daclau-Sar, the patron of carrion, the scavengers that feed on it, and the defilement of corpses. However, unlike other demons of his status, he has no interest in subtlety or politics, and if he has any plans of ascending to become a demon lord in his own right, it is through the gradual process of continuing to indulge in his foul hungers and gather worshippers until he accumulates enough sinful power to do so.
While not spawned by Lamashtu, Daclau-Sar has an appearance befitting the Mother of Monster’s progeny, resembling a six-legged hyena with two heads and a pair of vulture’s wings on his back.
As mentioned above, Daclau-Sar has no realm of his own, and instead dwells in the Xorian Mountains, a region on the border of Lamashtu’s realm of Kurnugia, where he rules over the lesser monsters there and feasts upon their slain.
Like all of his power level, Daclau-Sar has few worshippers, but he does have notable followings among some remote tribes of the orcs in the Holds of Belkzen, who emulate their Lord of Carrion by picking battlefields of corpses for use as trophies, as materials for undead war-beasts, or as the main course in their rot-blighted feasts. It is likely they and other such worshippers believe they gain some power over death by utilizing mortal remains, as well as demonstrating their right to survive by consuming those who failed to.
As a nascent demon lord, Daclau-Sar doesn’t quite move in the circles to have a lot of relationships with other powers, not that he has much interest in other powers unless they get between him and a meal, or look like they’d be appetizing once bloated and rotting to perfection. It can be assumed, however, that he has a wary fearful respect for true demon lords and deities, especially Lamashtu, and does not care to know or learn about non-evil entities beyond their role at the dinner table.
High in the Xorian Mountains, the Lord of Carrion rules over a petty court of monsters and lesser demons on the outskirts of Lamashtu’s territory, though calling it a court gives it far too much credit. In truth, Daclau-Sar makes the rounds bullying the other denizens of his territory, giving them full knowledge that he will devour their corpses when they are dead, and that will be very soon if they do not obey. Only the knowledge that his target is a servant of the Mother of Monsters might give him pause, the emphasis being on “might”.
As a creature barely above a beast himself, it only makes sense that Daclau-Sar favors the Animal domain, as well as Destruction, and of course Chaos and Evil. Meanwhile, he favors the subdomains of Demon (by way of Chaos or Evil), Feathers, Fur, and Rage. All of which reflect his nature as a master of the corpse-devouring beasts and his viciousness.
Sadly, nascent demon lords have not been given the deity treatment in Second Edition, so we have nothing much to go on here.
He does, however, have an obedience, albeit granting only a few spells. In exchange for eating a pound of carrion each day, the worshipper becomes more resistant to disease, and can cast magic to devour the ebbing life of the dying, spread disease, and take on powerful beastial forms.
Daclau-Sar hasn’t been mentioned in Starfinder, so he might have been slain, ascended, or remained as he was. He might have an influence on any world or civilization where it is considered unclean or taboo to devour the dead.
In any case, that does it for today, but the week is just beginning, so look forward to more as the week progresses!

Disclaimer: These details are what we have currently made and are subject to being changed in the future. I’ll post a notice if a major change is made.Disclaimer: These details are what we have currently made and are subject to being changed in the future. I’ll post a notice if a major change is made.
Makoto serves as the difficulty spike after Ryuji, Yusuke and Haru so her palace is much more complex than theirs. Due to how long this post got explaining how her palace works along with my own personal thoughts on Makoto, I will be elaborating more on Shadow Makoto's character in the post for her corrupted persona.
Niijima Homes
Heavenly Virtue: Temperance
Palace Ruler: Makoto Nijima
Treasure: Clipboard (Cognitive), Phone with Recording of evidence against Ryuji and Ann as Phantom Thieves(Reality)
Makoto's palace takes place in a city that on the surface looks completely normal. For a clearer image of what the city looks like, it's based on the city that Todoroki and Yaoyorozu fight Aizawa in on BNHA. The reason the palace looks so ordinary is that Shadow Makoto is a dictator who controls every aspect of the shadows and cognitions' lives.
Tumblr media
Shadow Makoto is the city's mayor and she governs the city with an iron fist. The shadows and cognitions in the palace follow a strict set of rules under a rigid schedule that vary depending on their location. This ties into the virtue of temperance which is having a humble life through exercising restraint of our desires. Shadow Makoto enforces temperance by making everyone live the same modest life where everyone does and earns the same things. In this way, they can't be tempted by their desires for luxury as no one is living in better conditions than them. A rulebreaker is considered someone who was tempted by their want for more and is dealt with accordingly.
Appearance wise, Shadow Makoto sports a black high waisted latex pencil skirt that goes past her knees with a short side slit, sensible black pumps, A black and white structured buttoned jacket with large leg o' mutton sleeves in a herringbone fabric that ends at her waist, short black fingerless gloves with her nails almond shaped and painted a light beige. Her hair is kept in a bun with her headband and bangs intact. Makeup-wise, she is similar to Shadow Sae but her makeup is more smokey and her lips are nude.
There are inspector shadows littered across the palace who make sure all of the rules are being obeyed. If the Infiltrators are spotted disobeying the rules of an area they're in, they will be forced into battle and the inspector shadows are mini bosses that you are better off avoiding as another shadow will be summoned immediately after one inspector is defeated. These shadows can be exploited in more than one way, the first is by changing the rules but you can only adjust 2 rules at most because exceeding 2 will cause the inspectors to get suspicious and alert Shadow Makoto who resets the rules and increases security by 20%. The other way is by changing the schedules of the inspectors but this has to be carefully managed as if schedules overlap, they will be alerted there was tampering and security level increases by 20%.
Rules won't constantly be active as eventually, the rules will be shut down and specific areas of the palace get hit with poisonous gas to weed out the rule breakers. The game gives you the schedule for the gassing and you will be warned by Morgana 30 seconds in advance if you're in an area that's about to get gassed. If you ignore his warning and get gassed, the poison drains your hp and sp and it can infact kill you so be careful. It only lasts 8 seconds though so you're not doomed but healing may be necessary if you're not full health lol.
After a few areas get hit with poison, the rules will be restored to normal as the rule breakers are assumed gone but it will eventually come back after a certain period of time.
Security level will play a major part of Makoto's palace as for once it will actually impact gameplay (Congratulations Ohya, you're not completely useless). You can't just rush and kill a bunch of shadows per increase depending on the rules of your location and everytime you're caught breaking a rule Shadow Makoto will increase the level more and more until eventually she can give a 100% increase.
If you get to 100% security level, Shadow Makoto will release the toxic gas on the entire palace. The poison is more powerful than the regular variant and can in fact kill you at full hp so yeah don't test Shadow Makoto's tolerance (lookin at you Akechi).
Now the actual goal in Makoto's palace outside of not dying to the punishment for rule breaking is to sneak around to find out the keywords to unlock the entrance to Makoto's secret base under the fountain. The keywords are obtained from various shadows there: inspectors, the shadows who obey and the rulebreakers. The Infiltrators will at times have to trigger specific rules and schedules to unlock the keywords but once all are obtained, they can explore underground which has a military theme in contrast to the suburban city on the overworld.
At the end of this secret base is the entrance to Shadow Makoto's office, securing the treasure route.
Her treasure being the phone she used to blackmail the Thieves reflects how controlling Makoto is as her shadow. This blackmail incident, as scummy as it was, was how she got into the Phantom Thieves so her shadow distorts it into her thinking that her ends justify the means she uses. By forcing everyone to live the same modest lives, corruption can't spread and without corruption, honest and hardworking people won't have to suffer.

thoughts on c!sam and religion im curious... also in regards to prisontrio all three are religious, to varying degrees and varying beliefs
/dsmp rp
okay so we joke that Sam is Catholic but, like, come ON. Sam has a LOT of behaviors that tend to ping me as religious/religious-coded. I don’t really think Sam definitely believes there’s a god… but there’s a very authoritative + spiritual cast to his attitude on life. God may not be real, but Good and Evil definitely are—everybody’s got a devil and an angel on their shoulder.
For one thing, there’s his attitude towards morality, which I’ve gone on and on and on about. How he makes arguments about virtue ethics based in authority, and based on the supposition that there is such a thing as Good and Evil, and more concretely and importantly, Good People and Evil People. Sam projects lots of this onto Dream. Dream becomes an object of his need for the moral world to be a simple one.
His personal relationship to guilt, suffering, and justice is an extremely particular brand of religious: he references purgatory in Daedalus, for god’s sake. There is an element of Sam that wants to see himself as martyred; there is a part of him that sees suffering as redemptive, just as that part of him sees suffering as something delivered only unto the unworthy. This is imo a huge part of his complex with Dream: Dream deserves to suffer, yet… doesn’t suffering elevate him, excuse him, somehow?
He’s got all these superstitious behaviors: think of how he acts post-egg, his relationship to the holy water. I think he prayed, down trapped in the obsidian, with his own flesh. He has all these behaviors that are nearly ritualized: the laws the waivers the protocols, forever and ever amen. Sam derives tangible comfort from following ordained rules. Violate the rules and just punishment follows, the arm of god will smite you. (Sam is happy to act in this capacity. Sam is afraid, on some level, to be on the receiving end.) Obey the rules and you will never be be wrong. I maintain that Sam was shaken far more by letting Quackity violate protocol than by letting him commit horrific violence.
As for Quackity… I don’t see Q as a true believer, founding of the prime church aside. But I think his quiet faith in power could be shaped that way: what are lessons if not commandments? What is a country if not a kingdom, what is a kingdom if not divine? If God is real, God owes him a motherfucking crown.
Quackity is a believer in shattering idols. Heaven is a place on earth. So is hell. Quackity can build them both. Quackity does not think Dream is a god, but he ascribes Dream power when he tears him apart.
I think the most fascinating thing here is that peculiar form of iconoclasm in what he does to Dream, and in how he rips out Schlatt’s heart, and even in some respects how he tries to tear down Wilbur. Quackity will take these false idols and smash them on the sand; he’ll eat what remains and absorb their power. That’s a ritual too.
Dream, I think, has the kind of faith you keep when you’ve met a god and he’s wearing your face. He has the kind of faith you keep in your heart when you wield the power of the gods, you carry it inside you, and you were torn apart for months for it. Everyone Dream ever reveals it to tries to pry it from him and they all fail. The plan Dream keeps is going to save the world and he’s the only one with the guts and the ability to do it.
Dream does not have a god complex, but he is a mortal man willing to tear apart the tools of Olympus. And he knows that’s exactly what he’s doing.

Geography in Locality Space
Spoiler alert: it's localities in space.
Star systems & localities
Star systems typically have one planet in the goldilocks zone, though occasionally there are two. This is the primary inhabited planet. Some systems, like Isonus, also have secondary inhabited planets that use domes, subsurface areas, or other means to make a safe environment for people. The name of the system and the name of the primary planet are almost always the same.
Localities are groups of 2-10 systems that are relatively close in physical space, close enough to all be connected to each other by permanent warp tunnels. Sometimes the divisions between localities are more political than physical, but typically the fact that the longer a warp tunnel is, the narrower it has to be inherently limits what systems can be permanently connected to each other for starship traffic. The opposite of a locality is an isolated system, which has no permanent warps to other systems.
Argoh locality is the Nicea’s home locality, comprised of Antarac, Rade, Gevorad, Ofain, and Hybres systems (and yes, locality names are usually acronyms of the systems). Isonus system, where Cady and Bo are stranded, is an isolated system.
Permanent warps
Permawarps are a form of stabilized warp magic, loosely inspired by the astral gates in Cowboy Bebop. They are entered and exited through a single gate at each end that functions like the loop of a butterfly net, holding open the tunnel indefinitely. Transit times vary based on the distance traveled, but are generally under fifteen minutes. The tunnels are usually set up and maintained by groups of scientists, magicians, and warp witches who monitor their system’s gates and convene at the locality level to administer the locality's warp network. Gates are constantly checked and repaired and are built so that they only have to go offline in the case of acute emergency—not least because it’s a pain to coordinate enough powerful warp witches to start up a new tunnel between two gates. Occasionally one system in a locality is close enough to a neighboring locality to set up a permawarp between them. Argoh locality has one of these in Ofain.
For the most part, permawarp travel is very safe. Gates have tightly regulated traffic flow, but are typically large enough to permit two large starships to travel side by side in opposite directions. Speed limits inside the tunnels are low, and people are generally very good about obeying the rules, because no one wants to fall out of the tunnel and into some random part of space and hope that they’re able to be found and rescued based on where they breached the tunnel. So the main risk is being too affected by the weird space inside the tunnel. Pilots with warp certifications are trained to handle it (and also have some natural resistance to the effects, the same way some people aren't prone to nausea irl).

Happy Worldbuilding Wednesday! How is your world governed? Is it a one-world order? City states? Complete anarchy, human sacrifice, cats and dogs living together, mass hysteria?
Happy WBW!
On a macro level, continents, islands, and territories are governed by a king, queen, or emperor. There really isn't a large scale democracy (as we are familiar with the concept today) and power is usually passed through generational lines (which heir it passes through varies on the kingdom or empire) or may be usurped. Knights, guards, and high-ranking mages are typically enforcers of the law though the way laws come into existence can be kind of murky. Some empires, like the Holtep Empire have groups (The House of Law) that will maintain the letter of law and others will be established by the reigning monarch (in the case of the Pale Kingdom).
On a micro level, it varies A LOT. Elves, for example, usually work in small factions or families so even if they are under the rule of their King, they mostly do whatever they want as long as they obey the rules about interacting with "outsiders". There are other groups that live entirely outside of the law's reaches like some pirates and rogue groups like witch covens and the like. The one thing I can say for sure is that even in really strict or organized systems there is still a lot of corruption and uneven application of justice or governing rules.

Skiing Simplified: A Beginner's Guide to Conquering the Slopes
Skiing, with its blend of speed, agility, and stunning alpine scenery, is an addictive winter sport that beckons adventurers of all ages. But for those new to the slopes, the skiing world can seem overwhelming. Fear not! This beginner's guide is here to demystify skiing, providing you with the knowledge and skills to glide down the slopes confidently and efficiently.
Getting Started: Preparing for Your Skiing Adventure
Before you hit the slopes, preparing yourself mentally and physically for the exhilarating journey ahead is essential.
Gear Up: Invest in quality ski equipment that fits well and suits your skill level. This includes skis, boots, bindings, poles, and appropriate attire. Renting equipment is a cost-effective option for beginners needing more time to commit to purchasing their gear.
Dress for Success: Layering is essential to staying warm and dry while skiing. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer, followed by an insulating mid-layer, and finish with a waterproof outer shell. Remember essentials like gloves or mittens, a helmet, goggles, and neck gaiters or face masks to protect against cold temperatures and windburn.
Learn the Lingo: Familiarize yourself with standard skiing terms and terminology to communicate effectively with fellow skiers and instructors. From pizza and french fries to moguls and groomers, understanding the language of skiing will enhance your overall experience on the slopes.
The ABCs of Skiing: Basic Techniques and Skills
Mastering basic skiing techniques is the foundation for success on the slopes. Start with the following ABCs of skiing:
A is for Alignment: Proper alignment is crucial for maintaining balance and control while skiing. Stand tall with your knees slightly bent, hips over your heels, and weight evenly distributed between both feet. Keep your hands forward and slightly out in front of you to help maintain balance.
B is for Balance: Balance is the key to staying upright and in control while skiing. Practice balancing on one ski at a time, shifting your weight from edge to edge, and maintaining a stable stance as you glide down the slope. Engage your core muscles to help stabilize your body and maintain balance in varied terrain.
C is for Carving: Carving turns is a fundamental skiing skill that allows you to navigate the mountain with precision and control. To carve a turn, initiate the movement by gently leaning into the turn with your ankles and knees, allowing your skis to carve a smooth, arcing path through the snow. Practice carving turns on groomed runs to improve your technique and build confidence.
Safety First: Tips for Staying Safe on the Slopes
Safety should always be a top priority when skiing. Follow these tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience on the slopes:
Know Your Limits: Ski within your skill level and comfort zone, and avoid attempting terrain or obstacles beyond your abilities. Pushing yourself too hard can increase the risk of injury and ruin your skiing experience.
Stay in Control: Maintain control by skiing at a speed that allows you to stop or change direction quickly and safely. Avoid skiing too fast for conditions or crowds, and be mindful of other skiers and obstacles on the slopes.
Obey the Rules: Familiarize yourself with the rules and etiquette of skiing, including the Skier's Responsibility Code. Yield to other skiers when merging or crossing trails, and always look uphill before starting a run or crossing a slope.
Wear a Helmet: Protect your head by wearing a properly fitted helmet whenever you ski. Helmets reduce the risk of head injuries in the event of a fall or collision and should be worn by skiers of all ages and skill levels.
Practice Makes Perfect: Building Skills and Confidence
The key to becoming a proficient skier is practice. Follow these tips to build your skills and confidence on the slopes:
Take Lessons: Consider taking ski lessons from a certified instructor to learn proper technique and form. Ski lessons are a great way to receive personalized instruction and feedback tailored to your skill level and goals.
Start Small: Begin on gentle slopes and progress to more challenging terrain as you gain confidence and proficiency. Starting small allows you to build a solid foundation of skills and gradually increase the difficulty level as you improve.
Stay Positive: Skiing is a skill that takes time and patience to master. Stay positive and focus on your progress rather than getting discouraged by setbacks or mistakes. Celebrate your achievements along the way and enjoy the journey of learning and improvement.

Top Safety Tips for Motorcyclists Riding in New York City
Tumblr media
New York City is a bustling metropolis known for its vibrant streets, iconic landmarks, and heavy traffic. Riding a motorcycle in this urban jungle can be both exhilarating and challenging. To ensure your safety on the road and reduce the risk of accidents, it's essential to follow these top safety tips. And in case you ever find yourself in need of legal assistance, remember that a trusted New York motorcycle accident lawyer can be your best ally.
1. Wear protective clothing
Before you hit the streets of New York City, make sure you're dressed for safety. This means you should wear a DOT-approved helmet, protective clothing, gloves, and sturdy footwear. This gear won't only protect you in the event of an accident, but can also prevent minor injuries from everyday road hazards.
2. Stay visible
New York City is a busy place with numerous distractions for drivers. To increase your visibility on the road, ensure your motorcycle has working headlights, taillights, and reflective gear. Stay out of other drivers' blind spots, and use hand signals when changing lanes or turning.
3. Defensive riding
Defensive driving is a must in New York City traffic. Always assume that other drivers may not see you or make sudden and unexpected maneuvers. Keep a safe distance, anticipate potential hazards, and stay focused on your surroundings.
4. Be careful in bad weather
Weather conditions in New York vary throughout the year. Rain, snow, and ice can make driving treacherous. If possible, avoid driving in bad weather. However, if you must, reduce your speed, increase your following distance, and use caution when navigating slippery roads.
5. Pay attention to the road conditions
Road conditions can change quickly in the Big Apple. Watch out for potholes, bumps, and debris that can pose a danger to motorcyclists. Keep an eye on the road and be ready to react if necessary.
6. Follow the traffic rules
Obeying the rules of the road is essential for your safety and to avoid legal problems. Always obey speed limits, traffic signs, and road signs. Reckless driving can lead to accidents and may require the expertise of a New York motorcycle accident lawyer to handle legal consequences.
7. Regular maintenance
Make sure that your motorcycle is in good condition. Regular maintenance, such as checking tire pressure, brakes, lights, and oil level, is essential. A well-maintained motorcycle is less prone to malfunctions and accidents.
8. Defensive parking
Even if your motorcycle is parked, you should be careful. Use secure parking lots and lock your motorcycle to prevent theft. In a city as busy as New York, motorcycle safety is an important concern.
Remember that while these safety tips can help protect you on the road, accidents can still happen due to the negligence of others. In such cases, a reliable New York motorcycle accident lawyer can provide essential legal guidance and support to help you seek the compensation you deserve. Stay safe on the streets of New York City, and always be prepared for any situation, on and off the road.

Benefits of 20 Inch Fat Tire Electric Bikes
A 20 inch fat tire electric bike uses an electric motor to help the rider propel their vehicle. They operate by pedaling and using a throttle, and then pedal-assist kicks in while they ride. When the rider stops pedaling or reaches a preset speed, the motor will stop and the rider will be free to pedal again. 20 inch fat tire electric bikes are available in many styles. Listed below are some benefits of electric bikes.
Tumblr media
Range
The range of an electric bike depends on the power source and battery. Higher-powered motors will give you more torque and speed but will reduce the riding range. Regardless of the size of the battery, it's important to choose one that will complement your biking skills and increase your range. A watt-hour is the measure of how far your e-bike can carry you, so the more range you can get depends on your skill level and terrain.
Safety
A study of 20 inch fat tire electric bikes concluded that riders' heart rates dropped on average 8 percent after riding the machines. The study also showed that people's heart rates consistently hovered in the range considered to be moderate exercise. Despite these limitations, riders who rode e-bikes for an average of 30 minutes per day logged more than 150 minutes of moderate activity compared to those who rode standard bikes. Most people enjoyed the pedal-assist function of e-bikes, and more than two-thirds of participants said they would use them for many years to come.
The benefits of 20 inch fat tire electric bikes
The benefits of 20 inch fat tire electric bikes are clear: they reduce the need for car trips, which can be detrimental to the environment. According to a survey, 28 percent of respondents said they had bought an e-bike to replace their car. The bikes can also carry cargo and reduce traffic, and help riders avoid parking and other hassles. Another advantage of e-bikes is that you don't have to worry about sweating or changing clothes when riding.
The rules and regulations on e-bikes can vary from state to state. People for Bikes offers a state-by-state guide to e-bike regulations. Local land managers and city governments can provide additional information. A cyclist should always wear lights when riding in the daytime. This helps the driver spot the cyclist. However, it is still important to obey all laws regarding e-bikes. If you do get pulled over, always use a hand signal to stop or slow down.
One of the advantages of 20 inch fat tire electric bikes is their low cost. The cost of an electric bike ranges from around $1,000 to $2,000. The cost of an electric bike may seem high, but you will save money in the long run by not having to worry about gas or maintenance. You'll also save money on other expenses associated with owning a car, which is especially expensive in today's economy. It is a smart move. With all the benefits of e-bikes, it's worth every penny.

Gnuplot linetype
Tumblr media
#GNUPLOT LINETYPE HOW TO#
Set label i/30+6 at first dum*cos(i), first dum*sin(i) center sprintf('%d', i) Set style line 11 lc rgb 'black' lw 2 lt 0 R = 3.31 #This number is Log10(max frequency) - Log10(min frequency) of the polar frequency grid Set palette rgb 33,13,10 #rainbow (blue-green-yellow-red) #set style increment user #NOTE: the commented out lines do not seem to affect color or width of the the contour lines no matter what number I use for the linetype The dataset for this plot can be downloaded here: The plot data will always have a maximum "z" coordinate of about 0 and decrease from there. The plot will always use the same set of contour levels: -6, -12, -18, and -24. I want to consistently use the same style for each level when the input data changes. The bottom line is that I need to apply certain style to the contour lines used for each contour level. For instance, will I always be sure that the contour line style will start at N=14? I'd to know what line type will be used for the first and subsequent contour lines when the number of "lines" in my input data will vary. So let's say N=13 lines - is there a rule that is obeyed for the first contour linetype?. For instance, the plot shown below uses 13 "lines" to generate the surface using set pm3d map. I'd like to know how I can know what line type will be used for contour lines in this plot, and whether that will change if the number of lines used to build the surface plot change. Perhaps this odd behavior is a result of the contour line being of type set cntrparam levels increment -6,-6,-24 and the negative values and/or negative going increment are causing some unpredictable behavior? I can't seem to figure out what linetype is being used for the contour lines, so I can't change the appropriate linetype. However, after issuing multiple set linetype commands that changed all of these line types to something that would be obviously different (I verified these by running the test command, the contour lines on the plot still had the same color and line width as before. OK, I thought, I can just change those and live with the odd behavior. It seems as if the line types are going BACKWARDS through the available styles. When I looked at my plot, I could see that the line colors start with cyan, then purple, then blue (e.g. Next, I restarted gnuplot, regenerated the plot without redefining any line style or type for the contour lines. Killing and restarting gnuplot restores the default linetype characteristics. It was recommended to use set linetype instead, which changes the characteristics of the gnuplot line style permanently for the current invocation of gnuplot. In addition, when I went to the help pages through my gnuplot install, I discovered that this usage is deprecated with my version (Version 4.7 patchlevel 0 last modified ). In theory this was supposed to force splot to plot lines using the newly defined styles. There are lots of posts on the web regarding using set style increment user followed by definition of user style via set style line 1 lc rgb "blue" lw 2 etc.
#GNUPLOT LINETYPE HOW TO#
One of these is how to exert control over the contour line colors and linewidths. Mostly it is working well for me, and I am down to some small details. Gnuplot 2D polar plot with heatmap from 3D dataset - possible? I am plotting data as described in a previous Stackoverflow question:
