It’s Gonna Be OK

Back at it again y’all.

So today I once again was going through a major anxiety attack. My chest felt like it was on fire, and even using all the coping strategies I had been taught, didn’t feel like they were enough. My anxiety was literally burning away at me, and it was winning.

So I turned to one of the things that has been a constant in my life. Music. I searched through my playlists and found a gem of a song I had forgotten about. “It’s Gonna Be Okay”, by The Piano Guys. I had listened to this song a lot back when it was first released, and even sang it for a choir performance once. The lyrics held a lot of meaning to me, but after a while they kinda faded into the background.

But now? I needed those words again. Some of those lyrics are lifesavers to me. I sang it today and literally cried from relief, to be able to express my emotions in a positive way while still saying what needed to be said, felt like everything to me.

And there is a battle raging in your heart But you must win It comes for all of us, saying we are not enough. So fight for your life, the world’s gonna try to sell you some lies

Those are the lyrics that punched me in the gut, because it described exactly what I had felt in that moment. A battle in my heart, tearing me apart until it ached, my mind lying to me over and over, self-doubt and worthlessness dropping onto me like a weight I couldn’t throw off. I knew I had to fight, I just didn’t know how.

Later in the song, these lyrics are probably the most uplifting I have ever heard from any piece of music, ever.

No matter what you've been through here you are, No matter if you think you’re falling apart Its gonna be okay

Those words, those hit home. They’re a reminder that yes, anxiety exists in my life. Yes, I may be fighting it constantly. Hell I may even be falling apart at the seams sometimes, but I’m still going. And nothing is going to stop that. So hun? This message goes for you too. Even if you’ve had to fight through hell and high water, even if you feel like the world is beating you down, you can fight back. You’re strong, hun, stronger than anything that might be thrown at you. It’s gonna be OK.

It is December, which means it is nearing Christmas, which means this song is back on repeat again for me. Probably the most beautiful and angelic arrangement.

When I first heard this song from How the Grinch Stole Christmas, it immediately became one of my favourites. The original by Faith Hill had some cool chord progressions I really liked during the bridge that is not covered here. Still, I always vacillate between the two during the festival period.
