Today in, "Conservatives keep making me side with Disney"...

So, Gina Carano is suing Disney. And Elon Musk is paying for her lawyers. And they released the complaint document.

It's... a doozy.

I can't decide if her lawyers are not taking this seriously at all or if they are taking it super duper extra seriously.

Like, that's a real thing that a lawyer wrote.

As you know, judges are famous for enjoying levity in official court documents. I think in law school you are encouraged to add comedy bits. True facts.

Gina wants money for emotional damages. But she also wants to be rehired, which sounds like another funny comedy bit. They scrapped an entire show because of her nonsense.

Most are saying this will get thrown out with haste due to the fact that Gina wasn't actually fired. She had already done her contracted work. Disney decided not to hire her for any *new* work. So I guess she wants them to honor an imaginary contract that was in her head.

The entire document is just as ridiculous as the opening crawl. It starts out by listing Gina's show biz bona fides. Her myriad accomplishments in Hollywood were listed one by one in a section titled...

Well, I'm intrigued.

Let's take a look at this illustrious career, according to this document.

"Carano is the first-ever female star in mixed martial arts cage fighting to successfully transition to a career in movies, breaking down substantial barriers for women in the sport."

Off to an interesting start.

All the cage fighting gals can act in movies now and they all have Gina to thank for barrier busting.

"Carano received roles in Hollywood and independent film productions such as Haywire, Fast & Furious 6, Heist, Deadpool, Almost Human, Extraction, Daughter of the Wolf, and Madness in the Method."

I've heard of several of those things! And I think I almost remember her in Deadpool! Very impressive.

Oh wait, they're not done...

"On May 13, 2008, “Gina Carano” was the fastest rising search on Google and third most searched person on Yahoo! while being ranked no. 5 on Yahoo!’s “Top Ten Influential Women of 2008” list."

In 2008 she was popular on Yahoo for a bit. Got it.

Has she won any awards?

"In 2012, Carano was the first recipient of the ActionFest Film Festival’s Chuck Norris Award for Best Female Action Star.

In 2017, Carano received the Artemis Action Warrior Award.

In 2019, Carano received The Rising Star award at Ischia Film Festival."

Very prestigious. I'm sure Chuck Norris has a lovely basement where that ceremony was almost certainly held.

You know what, why don't we just skip to The Mandalorian?

"Although her character instantly became one of the most recognized and popular characters in the series..."

Gina, no... that was the little green puppet.

You were the one who couldn't act very well but you made up for it by punching things good.

"Carano was again instrumental in the success of Season 2 of The Mandalorian."

The next section is titled

For some reason they left out "bigoted" before speech. Weird.

In most of it, it legit sounds like they are making a case *against* her. They show that everyone at Disney and Lucasfilm tried very hard to give her chance after chance. They did everything but point blank tell her, "Either learn and relieve yourself of this ignorance or stop posting shit online."

She totally had the option to keep her shitty views to herself and shut the heck up for the duration and enjoy the money and success a Star Wars show can bring. It's like swatting away a lottery ticket.

I'm all for free speech. And if the government tried to arrest her for saying dumb shit, I'd be against that. But that freedom to speak does not mean there are never consequences. People are also free to not like what you have to say.

The entire last section of the document is just tweets that Gina screencapped. Like, her lawyers didn't even redo them so they had consistent formatting or pixel dimensions. They were literally just off Gina's phone.

She thought she was collecting receipts but it was mostly just her co-stars standing up for marginalized groups.

Yes, why wasn't Pedro forced to listen to MAGA dipshits tell him why they hate his sister? Why wasn't he told to watch a Dinesh D'Souza documentary? Why wasn't he told to apologize for posting cool ass muppet memes?

The most telling part of the document for me... the part that really showed her ignorance... was when she compared one of her tweets to one of Carl Weathers'.

First, her infamous tweet comparing the holocaust to conservatives being moderated on social media for spreading misinformation...

And then Carl posted this in response to conservatives banning books...

And the document says...

"Even Carano’s male co-star, the late Carl Weathers posted the exact same message, but no action was taken against him. Nor was Weathers accused by Defendants of denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identity."

🐅The Good🐅

Every. Song. Fucking. Slaps. The only exception to this is "Arabian Nights", which is just because Bruce Adler's singing voice didn't match the song. But Will Smith's version from Aladdin 2019 is perfect.

Gorgeous animation except with the CG in the Cave of Wonders. That's the only scene that dates the movie

Every character is flawless. I especially loved the Sultan, when I wasn't really expecting to. Even though he's forcing Jasmine to get married, you can tell that he truly wants what's best for his daughter.

Robin Williams as the genie and Gilbert Gottfried as Iago was perfect casting.

I. Love. Jasmine's. Voice. She sounds so cute while also sounding strong, powerful, and sensual at times.

I WANT RAJAH. He's so fucking cute.

Watching Aladdin after playing Book 4 is an enhanced experience. I didn't think I could appreciate Jamil anymore than I already did. But thing change I guess, because HOLY FUCK. I love Jamil 10x more than I already did after seeing his inspiration. Jafar is so evil and mischievous, I love it.

A Whole New World needs to be seen to be believed. Go watch it right now, if you haven't. I will take no slander.

I love Aladdin and Jasmine had opposite drives, but are kind of the same in a way. Jasmine made her life worse by running away so she could follow her heart. Aladdin made his life better by lying so he could follow his heart.

Ugh, I love the apple symbolism.

🐍The Bad🐍

I'm not really a movie person, but I feel like it took a long time for the movie to really get started. It felt like it took 30 minutes for Jasmine to start running away, and another 30 minutes for Jasmine to get caught. I know it didn't take this long, but that's how if felt.

Abu was really annoying after the first few times he was on screen.

The law that Jasmine has to be married by her 16th birthday was both unnecessary and gross. That combined with the fact that Jafar ends up trying to marry her and people keep pointing out how old he is. The cherry on top of this disgusting sundae is the kiss towards to end. Like, no? That did NOT need to happen. Him calling her "pussycat" before that was so fucking rancid, it literally made my eyes water and I gagged.

🐪The Bad- A Racist Background🐪

The song, "Arabian Nights", originally contained the lyrics:

Where they cut off your ear If they don't like your face It's barbaric, but hey, it's home

This paints Arabic people as barbaric and violent people. After large criticism from Arabian Americans due to the racist lyrics, Disney agreed to change the lyrics. This was largely due to a meeting with the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee back in 1993, a year after the films release.

🌺Twisted Wonderland References🌺

In the Yasmina Silk event, the owner of the silky melon stall owner mentions that Jamil stole one while in middle school. This refers to the scene where Aladdin and Abu work together to steal a melon from a stand.

The Golden Scarab on Jamil's Dorm Uniform card mirrors the Scarab in the movie

During "One Jump Ahead", Aladdin and Abu attempt to hide with pots on their heads, which is something Jamil used to do when he would get in trouble.

"...Give me adequate cause. To send him packing on a one-way trip. ..Whoopeeeeeeeee! So looooooooooooong! The peddler in the beginning is a shady figure who attempts to sell the viewer useless objects that are marketed as valuables, which is something that the various merchants in Silk City attempt to do to Jamil's classmates.

The flower in Jamil's hair on his Yasmina Silk card looks identical to the flower Aladdin gives jasmine during "A Whole New World".

Aladdin has earned two direct-to-DVD sequels, The Return of Jafar(1994), and Aladdin and the King of Thieves(1996). Aladdin has also had a live action adaptation in 2019.

While not created by Disney, Twisted: The Untold Story of A Royal Vizier, is a parody musical based around Aladdin.

HAUNTED MANSION (2023)

If the goal of this film was to top Eddie Murphy’s admirable trainwreck version of the Haunted Mansion from 2003, well then, mission accomplished.

That is not to say this version isn’t without its own shortcomings and issues, but for the first time in a long while with Disney, I went into this movie genuinely excited. This excitement could be possibly attributed to the fact that the Haunted Mansion has been my favorite, and most visited ride at the Disney Parks for almost 20 years now. Or it could be the early childhood nostalgia I had from repeated viewings of the 2003 version on DVD and being the most scared kindergartner you could find in the state of Pennsylvania whenever I would sit down to watch it. Call it whatever you will, but I was excited, nonetheless.

This film is the next big budget Disney film in a long line of commercial flops, and I’m sure the House of Mouse is hoping that this film will break the streak with its loaded cast (LaKeith Stanfield, Owen Wilson, Jared Leto, Tiffany Haddish, Jamie Lee Curtis, Danny DeVito, Rosario Dawson) and screenplay written Katie Dippold (The Heat, Ghostbusters 2016). Unfortunately, for all 999 happy haunts, this movie is sandwiched in between two of the most talked about summer blockbuster films in recent memory, Barbie and Oppenheimer, or what is now known as Barbenheimer.

Walking into the theatre through the nearly 300 people all dressed in pink going to Barbie, we got to our seats and there was a really fun and excited vibe going through the audience, people actually cheered when the movie started (first time I’ve seen that since Avengers Endgame 2019). And overall the movie went over well with the crowd. The jokes for the most part landed when they needed to, and I felt the impact of a good amount of the emotional beats in the film.

Especially LaKeith Stanfield, who delivered a beautifully eloquent and emotionally powerful tearjerker of a monologue describing the things he loved about his deceased wife (much in contrast to Eddie Murphy’s painfully stiff and hard to watch line said to his abruptly killed wife “Sarah, I love you so much.”)

Another standout performance was Chase Dillon, who played Travis, the socially awkward young son of Gabbie (Rosario Dawson). You really felt for the kid throughout the movie, the loss of his father, not fitting in and, obviously, the fact that his house is extremely haunted. Of course, you get the usual on-brand performances from Wilson, DeVito and Haddish, although it’s nice to see that what they bring to the film is relegated to their supporting lead comic relief moments and doesn’t take away from the emotional moments and overall story.

This version of the Haunted Mansion is also filled to the brim with Easter eggs relating to the lore of the actual rides in the Disney Parks. It’s also great to see the hitchhiking ghosts make an appearance as they have been a personal favorite for the longest time. On that note, the spirits in this version have taken a massive leap in quality compared to their ‘03 counterparts as now some of them have genuinely scary moments (but let’s not forget the childhood trauma-inducing crypt scene that still sends shivers down my back just thinking about it.)

This version’s main antagonist is also a reference to Disney Park lore. The Hatbox Ghost (Jared Leto) was an animatronic placed in the attic scene that debuted alongside the ride itself but was removed in 1969 and wouldn’t be seen again until 2015. Leto himself in the role delivered some truly imposing moments of terror. Always as this black figure looming somewhere in the shadows until his big reveal. The scares in this film are also done fairly well as the film uses very modern horror techniques in its first scene with the mansion itself, which is very reminiscent of the 2017 adaptation of Stephen King’s It.

But here are the downsides. The film for the first two-thirds feels decently paced, thorough, and exciting, but jeez, if they didn’t lose themselves, and the plot in the last third. It felt like the movie had taken a complete turn and I felt as if I was watching a different movie.

Secondly, as much as I love Jamie Lee Curtis, I have to say Jennifer Tilly was significantly better as Madame Liotta, and throughout a majority of the film I just kept wishing she were back in the role, especially when Mrs. Curtis attempted whatever unspecified accent she was going for there.

And, as weird as this will sound, and I already know it will, I miss Terrence Stamp, General Zod himself, as the main antagonist. Ridiculous, over the top vibrato and all. He felt like such an imposing figure, and most importantly for me, he wasn’t CGI. Don’t get me wrong the Hatbox Ghost design is great, but I miss just a spooky old British guy popping up behind you and just being an intimidating presence on screen.

Again, is it better than the ‘03 version? Yes. Does it have flaws? Absolutely. But this film is the kind you can bring the family to when there’s nothing else to do and everyone will have a fun time based on the spectacle alone.

Early box office results for this film have it significantly below Barbenheimer and looking like another project where Disney is coming in below where they would like to be financially. Unfortunate, but not unexpected. But hey, if you’re a fan of Disney’s best ride (this is a non-arguable point, it’s been backed by science, just don’t ask which scientists) or you’re looking for an easy watching experience, this wouldn’t be a bad option whatsoever.

Valentine’s Day isn’t always about a box of chocolate or couple photos bombarding your feed all day; sometimes, it’s about snuggling under the covers with either your loved ones or love one, watching a comfort movie that makes you feel giddy both in the inside and outside.

Here is a (very long) list, categorized from cliche to not-really-romance-but-romance, of the best rom-com films you could watch on Valentine’s Day:

Well-Known But Not Overrated: from the 00s to the 20s - here are all the romcoms you may or may not have heard.

1. Set It Up (2018) Starring Zoey Deutch and Glen Powell, alongside Lucy Liu and Taye Diggs, Set It Up is a fun New York-based romantic comedy on the spiral of two overworked assistants setting up their bosses.

2. Definitely, Maybe (2008) Nothing weirder than hearing about your parents having a life before you: Definitely, Maybe is a tale of three romantic stories and one mother mystery.

3. Love, Rosie (2014) Starring two rom-com sweethearts Lily Collins and Sam Claflin, Love Rosie is the original formulaic film of the ultimate childhood best friends to lovers + right person, wrong time trope.

4. Emma (2019) With the perfect combination of wit, set, cast, and story, Emma is the perfect love letter to Jane Austen and fans of Regency Romance.

5. The Half of It (2019) Small town and big romance: The Half of It is a quiet yet impactful film on coming-of-age, friendships, and high school crushes.

6. Miss Congeniality (2000) A perfect mixture of comedy and romance, Miss Congeniality will win your heart with the classic undercover cop story.

14. How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003) Perhaps one of the most famous rom-com of the 21st century, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is exactly as the title suggests; even in the two decades since its release, the film remains fresh, original, and hilariously sharp in the rom-com film department.

15. The Proposal (2009) In the ultimate fake relationship trope, The Proposal is a classic New York-to-small-town romance, unforgettably delivered by Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds.

16. 13 Going on 30 (2004) 13 Going on 30 achieves every 13-year-old girl’s dream; the film centralizes around the youthful and comedic 13-year-old-stuck-in-30-year-old body tale with just the perfect amount of true romance.

17. Crazy Rich Asians (2018) Heartwarming and a feast to the eyes of cinematography, costumes, and score, Crazy Rich Asians is the story of Rachel Chu entering the world of crazy rich Asians, and her fight for her true love.

Folks, Nimona is getting a single film. Just a film. Not a show. Not a series. A film. A movie. And only one of them. It'd be cool if it was getting more than that, but it's not. It has a runtime of just under 2 hours.

The Netflix YouTube teaser page even says this in the summary: from the Netflix Film "Nimona"

In the article Netflix released the day of the teaser, they have these:

"In the animated film that shares her name, the young changeling"

"share a first teaser trailer for our film"

"even more so in the movie now"

"[Nimona] reached out from the movie"

"You can catch up with Nimona when the movie hits Netflix on June 30."

In the extra footage reel on the New on Netflix video, there's a box of text on the top left corner of the Nimona footage that says "N [for Netflix] Film Nimona June 30".

For all the other general confusion I'm seeing around, I made a Tumblr post summarizing most of the stuff with the film and its history. Shorter summary of some common confusion I'm seeing:

Nimona is a webcomic (2012-2014) by Nate Diana Stevenson/ND Stevenson (he/him) that was published as a single graphic novel in 2015. While the comic was ongoing, Nate co-wrote Lumberjanes. The Nimona adaptation rights were purchased by Fox in 2015, and it was in production to become a film under Blue Sky Studios, using the Paperman (2012) art style (one of the directors, Patrick Osbourne, was animation supervisor for Paperman, and directed Feast the short film (2015), which used the same style). Disney purchased 20th Century Animation in 2019 (including Blue Sky), and work was ongoing. Disney shuttered Blue Sky and cancelled the still in production film in February 2021. The crew went searching for a new home for the film and it was picked up by Annapurna as producer, DNEG as the animation studio (using Blue Sky materials), and Netflix as distributor (they just seem to be handling distribution and marketing, not actually working on the film), which they officially announced in April 2022, for a planned 2023 release. The film also seems to have been completed sometime around February 2023. The PG-rated film premiered at the Annecy Animation International Film Festival on June 14th, 2023, and will release in select theaters on June 23rd, and be on Netflix for streaming on June 30th, 2023. There have been preview events for crew, press, and certain small organizations going back to February 2023, and at least a few people have gotten advance review copies.

Nate was also the showrunner for She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (November 13, 2018-May 15, 2020), the reboot of She-Ra: Princess of Power (1985). Again, Nimona's adaptation rights were bought by Fox in 2015, and it was being made by Blue Sky Studios. She-Ra (2018) began production in April 2016 under DreamWorks Animation and Mattel (owner of the IP), and was distributed by Netflix. 20th Century [Fox] Animation was bought by Disney in 2019. She-Ra (2018) concluded in May 2020. Nimona was cancelled by Disney in February 2021. Nimona was officially revived in April 2022, under Annapurna Animation (production), to be made/completed by DNEG (animation) and distributed by Netflix. Netflix wasn't involved on Nimona until after it was in production for around six years, around a year, minimum, after She-Ra (their last project with Nate) ended. Every other company is different and it'd be weird for them to say "you only get this if this is successful" when that makes zero sense on timing.

Lumberjanes is being adapted into an animated series on HBO Max, with Nate as executive producer. We haven't really heard anything more about it since 2020.

You can still buy and read the Nimona graphic novel in physical and ebook form, as well as the full-cast English audiobook (also available in the link). The graphic novel has been translated into 16 languages! The only thing that changed for publication was that Nate redid some of the very early pages to improve the art/panelling and make it more in line with later pages and acceptable for physical publication. That's all!

Forefront 7: Black Noir’s Animated Psyche in The Boys - Season 3 (2022)

Season 3 of The Boys (2019-present) finally unveils more of the shrouded mystery that is Black Noir. One of the ‘‘Seven’’, he never utters a word and communicates only in writing in important situations. Not much is previously known about him other than his proficiency in the martial arts and of his super strength and heightened senses.

Background

We first get a glimpse of his background in season 3, with the mention of Soldier Boy and his entourage. Soldier Boy ends up violently beating Noir’s head and sticking it on top of a burning car. This incident leaves Noir brutally disfigured, causing his brain to regress and get stuck at the mental age of a child. It also causes him to experience hallucinations and delusions of cartoon characters which he imagines as his friends.

Style

The Boy’s showrunner, Eric Kripke, detailed that they wanted to show Noir’s inner thoughts during his contemplation and brooding because he has no one he can speak with. The show had already done flashbacks to introduce Soldier Boy’s connection to him and this time, they wanted to refrain from repeating the same style of storytelling. They intended on having the animations look like classic Disney, as ‘‘if Martin Scorsese made Snow White’’. These sweet-looking, fluid characters were to present the flashback in the most brutal fashion (Kripke, 2022).

This strange animated ‘‘dialogue’’ and the flahback made more sense considering Noir’s stunted mental state and finally revealed a glimpse of what the inside of the mystery super’s head looked like.

Psyche

We see him interact with his imaginary cartoon friends, including pizza mascot Buster Beaver, who apparently previously helped him deal with a mass murder, and a boner in school (Anderton, 2022).

Although it is implied that they are ever present, his imaginary friends seem to try and protect him. It seems like he has conjured them up as a form of protection for his mental state, to help him deal with his doings and with traumatic incidents.

When he briefly escapes from Vought’s clutches after learning of Soldier Boy’s return, he sits at an abandoned, dusty Buster Beaver restaurant to seemingly gather his thoughts. This is when Buster Beaver reassures him. We see the flashback in the same, adorably animated style, showcasing the most violent battle (Zalben, 2022).

Influence

Animation can achieve an idiosyncratic style of storytelling that live-action could struggle with, since it is devoid of the same limitations. This blended style has not been used much in live-action for such a profound execution, before. For this blend of 2D animation and live-action, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Mary Poppins, and even comics like Spider-Ham, which features a pig version of Spider-Man and a cat version of Captain America were referenced by the Animators at Six Point Harness (Davis, 2022). The team behind The Boys successfully uses animation to not only stylise this episode but to also appropriately address Black Noir’s stunted, child-like brain while also adding character.

My work often features inward and outward perspective of the characters - of themselves and of the world. This is a great way to execute an episode like this one, much like the imaginary companion that I manifested in my film for Optical Sound, which follows a lonely protagonist conjuring up a shadow to keep them company and mute their feeling of desolation and loneliness.

‘M3gan’ Beats Box Office Predictions, Sailing Into Second Place

Hollywood has new scream queens. "M3gan," a campy PG-13 horror film that features the robot who is a mean girl (insert an snotty flip of the hair here) has sold around $30.2 million of tickets in both the United States and Canada over the weekend, which is approximately 30 percent higher than the box office experts had anticipated. Universal Pictures, which released the film for $12 million in its horror comedy in the first place, is already working on another sequel. Reviewers were 94% positive as per Rotten Tomatoes. The level of criticism alone makes "M3gan" something of a victory: when you think of well-worn film concepts The killer doll is right alongside "mediocre guy attracts supermodel." The process of coming up with an original take on the concept is nearly impossible. (Chucky is just 35 an old. She has also been the subject of eight films and an upcoming TV show. The demon Annabelle has been the star of three films since the year 2014.) Horror movies are still doing well in the theater -- unlike sophisticated dramasthat have been struggling -- due to the fact that they're fun to watch in the dark, with strangers. "Young moviegoers want to see them with their friends, on the big screen, for the maximum thrill," said David A. Gross who is a film consultant who writes a monthly newsletter about box office figures. The 44 percent viewers of "M3gan" was under 24 according to Universal. "M3gan" is also notable due to the manner that comedy has developed into a stage production. Comedy films of the past have struggled to make money from ticket sales. However, comedy is now more prominent in other genres of film and with Marvel superhero films being an obvious example. In a way, "M3gan" is a comedy disguised as a horror movie The four-foot robot doll hilariously sings performs bizarre dance moves and even snarkseven when she's not killing. The director-writer-producer James Wan, known for "The Conjuring," "Aquaman" and "Saw" franchises, came up with the idea for "M3gan," which stands for Model 3 Generative Android. (It is known as Megan.) Warner Bros. passed, partly because it already had Annabelle and Annabelle, which led Wan to pitch the concept to Megaproducer Jason Blum, whose Bughouse Productions is part of Universal. Gerard Johnstone, a relative newcomer has produced "M3gan" from a screenplay written by Akela Cooper (known for "Luke Cage" and "Malignant"). The Return of 'Avatar' Directed by James Cameron takes us back to the world of Pandora in"Avatar: The Way of Water," the follow-up to "Avatar: The Way of Water." Universal supported "M3gan" with an inventive marketing campaign. TikTok played a major role in the efforts of the studio as did Twitter which was where an account purportedly managed by M3gan started battling with one of the accounts controlled by Chucky. Hollywood hopes that 2023 will be an end to the box office success after three years of pandemics that have ravaged the industry. Cinemas across North America sold roughly $7.5 billion worth of tickets in the year that ended which was a decrease of 34 percent from the previous year according to EntTelligence an industry research company. The total was equivalent to 626 million ticket. Prior to the outbreak of coronavirus, Hollywood was selling about 1.2 billion tickets per year throughout both the United States and Canada. Global ticket sales in 2022 was estimated at $26 billion According to Gower Street Analytics, down by 35 percent from 2019. It's boding well to help a rebound at the box office, "Avatar: The Way of Water" (Disney) produced by James Cameron, has overcome an earlier than expected slow start and a string of devastating winter storms across Canada and the United States and Canada to make around $1.7 billion across the globe. The expensive "Way of Water" should surpass that $2 billion threshold by the end of this year, analysts claim, which makes it among the top five films of all time , and also proving Disney's plans for three additional "Avatar" installments. The weekend of "The Way of Water" brought in around $45 million in domestic theaters which is enough to secure the top spot. "M3gan" was second, being followed by"The Way of Water," and the animation "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish" (Universal) with $13.1 million ticket revenues. This is the domestic total for three weeks in the range of $88.8 millions ($130.8 globally). Dramas continue to struggle but. Damien's star-studded "Babylon" (Paramount), an extreme version of the hedonism and sexiness of the early days of Hollywood did not make an impact in the third weekend of release in the theaters, with only $1.5 million worth of tickets, making a total of $13.5 million. Stuff I’m Looking Forward to in September

Can’t believe it is now Fall or at least new Fall TV Season. In addition to Labor Day (Sept. 5), 9/11 Anniversary (Sept. 11), Grandparents Day (Sept. 11), first day of Fall (Sept. 22), and Rosh Hashanah (Sept. 25-27) here is what’s on my radar this month:

Movies:

Clerks III

Kevin Smith’s 1994 directorial debut Clerks is my all-time favorite of his films. Shot on 16mm black and white, he made a clever and funny movie about a convenient store, shot at the convenient store he was working at. The film put him on the map. His characters have popped up in various View Askewniverse films, but he returned to the store in 2006 with Clerks II. Now he has come full circle with Dante and Randal, now in their late 40s and 50s, who are still at Quickstop Convenience and after Randal has a near-fatal heart attack, they decide to make an indie film about the store. Opening 9/13!

Moonage Daydream

Brett Morgen’s 2015 doc Cobain: Montage of Heck was one of my Top 10 Documentaries of the 2010s. Now he is turning his eye to another musical icon (that Cobain famously covered), Sir David Bowie. This one was produced in cooperation with the Bowie estate. Opens 9/16.

Pearl

One of my favorite horror directors of the last decade or so is Ti West. Now he has made a prequel about one of the characters from X. Opens 9/16.

Blonde

A lot of actresses have played Marilyn Monroe over the years, but this one with Ana de Armas looks quite impressive. Opens 9/28.

It has been over 11 years since Julian Lennon’s last album. Since then he’s been keeping busy with books, photography and more. I’m excited for his 7th album, which drops on 9/9.

In 2021, Sir Ringo Starr released two EPs: Zoom In and Change the World. Both made my Best Albums of 2021 list. Now he’s back with a new EP dropping on 9/16!

Yeah Yeah Yeahs Cool It Down

The last Yeah Yeah Yeahs album was a whopping nine years ago (my #1 Album of 2013 I might add). They are one of the most original and innovative bands to emerge out of NYC in the early 00s. The band’s new album is among my most anticipated this year and it drops 9/30!

The Pixies Doggerel

The Pixies are a band I have always loved since I discovered Surfer Rosa as a teen. The group’s first album since 2019′s slow burn of an album Beneath the Eyrie is going to be quite a rocker! Album drops 9/30.

Andor (Disney +)

The newest Star Wars original live-action TV series will be about rebel spy Cassian Andor, Diego Luna’s character from Rogue One. This series takes place five years before Rogue One. Andor wasn’t my favorite character in Rogue One (that would be Chirrut Îmwe), but with Tony Gilroy on board as creator and producer I am optimistic about this show. Series Premiere on 9/21.

After the unexpected death of Taylor Hawkins in March, his bandmates in Foo Fighters have announced some tributes concerts to him, taking place at Wembley Stadium in London, UK on 9/3/2022 and at KIA Forum in Los Angeles, CA on 9/27/22. My problem with the fashion in miraculous.

Part 1 Marinette.

This is going to be a long rant on why I don’t like the fashion in miraculous, which seems very negative but it’s probably just me over analyzing everything.

In 2015 Miraculous: tales of ladybug and chat noir was released, at the time there were already other rivaling cartoons (such as Star vs the forces of evil, Steven Universe and Gravity falls being the most popular ones) What made Miraculous stand out from other cartoons that were aimed for kids/preteens was the 3D animation, this made the show quite popular, especially since Disney's new 3D animated films such as Frozen, Tangled and Big Hero Six was quite popular especially on tumblr (because of the re-colours and redesigns of Rapunzel/Elsa and whoever else into a hipster or some other god awful fashion trend from 2010-2016)

Miraculous is STILL airing today meaning that when I was in grade 6 I was watching it, now I'm in my last year of highschool and we are finally seeing development in the show (sorry) however we have not seen any character changes in clothing which I know we don't see much but I feel as if Marinette wears the same 4 outfits and I WOULD LOVE to see a storyline where Marinette is maturing and decides to change her hairstyle and her clothing choices.

Lets analyse Marinette's everyday outfit.

Marinette wears a white singlet top(tank top?) with a black outline/trim, on the singlet top we see a flower design that appears to be a cherry blossom or lotus. Over the top of the shirt she wears a dark grey blazer jacket with a white inside with pink polka dots, she sports this same material but inverted so it is pink with white dots on her purse. For the bottoms she wears hot pink jeans which appear to have the same polka dot pattern on the cuffs as the jacket she wears, the jeans also have some weird ripped/line structure too them which has been added with a white stitching. She wears baby pink ballet flats with a slight heel and black lining and a bow.

I don’t really like this outfit, it’s very boring and I think that Marinette being an aspiring fashion designer would wear something bold that shows off her skills and her own personal style. I also believe that Marinette would be on trend, while being ladybug could potentially leave her with not enough time to come up with new designs, I think it would be a good concept for Marinette to be wearing a new design once in a while. (Even though I know it will be the same polka dot,baby pink, flower fabric that marinette seems to have 10000 yards of.)

For example, in Gravity Falls Mable would wear a different sweater each episode (don’t quote me on that I could be wrong)

Mabel wore the same structure of outfit each episode yes, but it was new each time. And while I wouldn’t consider this the height of fashion, it suits Mabels personality and shows that she is different from the other characters who wear the same outfit every episode.

SPOILERS FOR GRAVITY FALLS

Mabels constant changing of sweaters shows the chaos of her character, you never know what to expect with her, which is why she played a vital role in Bills plan, she was unpredictable and let her ego and own happiness succumb to her chaotic actions.

This would be an easy concept to implement into miraculous and would fit with the context, perhaps Marinette would make a new piece of clothing to wear each episode, it could start off with smaller accessories that slowly develop into larger pieces. If Marinette is sad, it could reflect in the item she chooses to make.

However that isn’t the main problem of the outfits, my problem is that I hate them, I’m not judging you if you like them in any way,shape or form, but personally I cannot see a normal teenager wearing these outfits, there is only few characters whose outfits actually make sense.

For example, Marinettes outfit feels more mature, as if she is working in an office, this does not fit her character at all, and while the colours are bright, the structure and presentation of the pieces gives off the boring dull feeling of working in an office and makes her look much older.

Now here is what I would’ve liked Marinette to wear each season. (considering the dates of releases)

Season 1 2015

In season one we are introduced to Marinette, considering Marinettes age 13. Bare with me, I understand these years are arguably the worst for fashion.

The reason why I picked this outfit is because it reminds me of Marinette, Taking inspiration from 2015 trends, we see Marinette following basic trends such as off the shoulder and denim materials, however, I believe she would add her own style by adding the polka dot pattern to the inside of the jacket (like her original blazer) and the skirt. This look is generally what I would consider to be basic Marinette, she could wear this throughout each season since it is a outfit that could fit into any time frame (2000s-2020) with a few alterations.

Season 2 2016.

2016 was also not a good year for fashion but oh well I digress. This season we get to meet new characters, including new miraculous wielders and love interest. This is also when we get a Marinette birthday episode shower her growth symbolically or whatever.

I decided to add ‘edge’ to this outfit, since we do see Marinette get hurt in a few episodes and struggle with having to choose the right people to wield a miraculous. on the left, I chose a bomber jacket since they were incredibly popular at the time, and dark heels to show Marinettes change, however underneath she wears bright pink jeans and a white turtleneck, this is to show that she is still soft and caring.

Season 3 2019.

this is where it gets much better since the trends and fashion were actually really good this year. We see a lot of important points in this season, we get backstory about characters, learn more about the Miraculous lore, AND we see Marinette be very mature and put Adrien and Kagamis happiness over her own.

This is how I think Marinette would dress and yes they are 4 very different styles, but I think that she would want to show variety not only in her work as a designer, but also as a person, Marinette wants to grow.

Anyways that’s all for now, yes this post is very much all over the place and I start point and leave them without conclusion, but it was fun for me.

EDIT: in my research I decided to change my idea lol, Marinette doesn’t wear the item she makes because it’s too expensive to have a character wear a new outfit each episode, but instead we just see her making a new item.

This Tumblr has been mostly for longer form reviews of holiday content and exhaustive schedule listings of all of the new Christmas viewing, whereas I opine more freely (a.k.a. drone on and on) about trivia and other holiday viewing whatnot over on my Twitter account.

But I'm happy to include the latest stats on new, 2021 Christmas movies here as well.

Currently, we are at a mind-blowing 167 new movies for the season on broadcast, cable and subscription streamers, and that's without counting VOD, DVD, or indies uploaded to platforms like YouTube or Amazon Prime. And that's before we even touch on all the series, specials, concerts, televised parades and holiday TV episodes touching down this year. All in all, we'll probably top 600 new-for-2021 at-home holiday viewing options by year's end, as we're already well past 550.

As for how that compares to past years, well, this year's made-for-TV output alone is more than the first three years I kept track combined…
