ROSE RE-ELECTED
The local elections across the country came to a close on the 5th May, with all of Walsall’s results published. In the Walsall region, the majority of local councils voted Conservative, with re-elects such as Waheed Rasab of Paddock, Amanda Kate Parkes of Aldridge North and Walsall Wood and Rose Ann Martin of Pelsall.
In the Pelsall election, candidates Isaac Crosby of the Liberal Democrats, Graham Eardley of the Reform UK party, Mugabe Reid of Labour and Rose Ann Martin of the Conservative party were all promoting themselves to the local people, but there was only one clear winner. Rose Ann Martin of the Conservative Party ran away with the vote, with 1395 votes, almost 900 votes clear of second place Mugabe Reid.
Mrs Rose Ann Martin is a long standing councillor of Pelsall’s local government, and in the summer of 2022, she was elected as the Mayor of Walsall. Rose grew up in Birmingham with her parents and only sister. She studied at the Swanhurst Girls School and studied accountancy whilst at Hall Green College. After leaving Green Hall college, Martin landed a managerial role in Aldridge, moving to Walsall in the process.
In order to accommodate more time for her daughter Michelle, Martin decided to switch career paths, moving into the world of market research. “When I moved away from my manager role, I took up a lot more time working with the community. I was working with the Neighbourhood Watch and all sorts of things with Park Hall. After working on those projects, I was elected to be the Paddock Councillor (in 2003).”
Mayor Rose spoke about how busy this past year has been, with many events such as the late Queen Elizabeth’s death, the coronation of King Charles and the Platinum Jubilee. “On the coronation weekend, I went to ten different parties in one day… I don’t sleep for many hours!”
Mrs Martin has been a councilor for almost 20 years now, helping make the town of Walsall a better place and putting her ideologies forward. Her services were vastly used across all sorts of charities and social trusts. She served at the Chairman Children’s Scrutiny, Chairman Audit Committee, the Chairman of the Health & Well Being as well as Chairman of the Adult Social Care Group. She holds many ties in the education sector also, governing local schools in the Walsall area, such as Queens Mary’s High School for girls.
One of Rose’s main aims in Walsall is to protect the people and make them feel safe at the town she is mayor of. In 2006, Rose successfully integrated a key strategy. This strategy was called the Walsall’s Teenage Pregnancy Strategy, a move which resulted in teenage pregnancy rates dropping by over 50%. With Rose’s connections to the council and her multiple cabinets, Rose created a working bond between the Health Care Trust and the Walsall Council itself.

#365daysofbiking Buffeted:
Wednesday March 10th 2021 – The warmer weather bought with it high winds. I’m less tolerant of these than I used to be, and find them more of an issue when riding. I’m not sure why; perhaps I’m more risk averse as I get older.
Coming back from work against a very unpleasant headwind which was peppered with raindrops, I stopped on the canal near the Black Cock bridge to take a picture - and realised there was no moonlight.
So I improvised with the bike headlight.
Not a David Bailey, but for such a horrid night it would have to do...

“ Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear” Robert Frost.
The extension to Walsall Arboretum, begun in 2009 and still very much ongoing; these pictures are mainly from a photoshoot from August 2018 which I rediscovered last week, having not posted it originally, and also from (4) April 2018 and (5,10) October 2018.
The parks have always served a public service; in the 1920s and 30s they offered work to unemployed men in the rock garden (1924) and an extension begun in 1930, and in the planting of allotments here during World War 2. Now the park is again enriching Walsall, by bringing nature to people and people to nature, in this extension.
While I like the sculpted urban park, designed by Richard Lowe and the subject of my last two photoshoots, I also like this self-willed extension, which leads on to the Beacon Way, and look forward to seeing further developments in the spirit of (10) the Devil’s Toenail, a glacial boulder randomly put here in 1925 and the patron saint of the edgelands part of the park.
“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference”
