Artwork of Mario and Luigi from a 1985 Japanese guide for Wrecking Crew. As Wrecking Crew was the last major Mario game released before Super Mario Bros. (which gave Mario and Luigi their signature hats with letter emblems), the artists did not have the “L” on Luigi’s hat as reference.
As such, they did not know that his Japanese name, ルイージ (”Ruiji”), is supposed to be transliterated with an L into the Latin alphabet, and so assumed his name would be “Ruigi”, decorating his overalls with an “R”.
