It's really interesting that both Passing Strange and a Strange Loop focus on Black boys feeling out of place with their blackness and looking for acceptance and finding an identity through rock music, dealing with self loathing and a distant and difficult relationship with their mothers for different reasons (Youth can't connect and basically fails to reconcile with his mom before her death and her refusal to accept him as he is, Usher's mother refuses to really recognize how much her homophobia hurts her son). it's really interesting how similar they are.
