*Deep Sigh, adjusts camera, fidjets with Mic, runs hands nervously through hair*
This post...is a long time coming.
I hurt a lot of people, a lot of communities, a lot of people, because I was angry and scared and chose to be defensive instead of doing what I should have done and asked questions, listened, clarified.
My first apology is to the Aroace community. That's the one I hurt the most, and for the longest... That's the one that has me blacklisted from an entire online community, lol. That's the one that's cost me friendships I value dearly, or, at least, used to. I have a huge issue of clinging so tightly to black and white thinking, to what fits in a nice, neat little box, that I don't stop and think if there's any other way to approach something. I was so caught on what does or doesn't make "Sense", I never considered why it has to. Aroace are LGBT. They always have been. I just let the wrong sort of people convince me otherwise, and that's my responsibility- I didn't do my research, I didn't listen, I didn't do anything other than get angry.
My next apology is to the Trans community. I already have discussed in another post my leaving the transmed community, but I'm going to reiterate here. I'm so done being angry at other people living their life. Im done engaging in other people's bitterness and letting it taint my worldview. And I'm done putting other people in a box, being judge and jury if someone is valid or not.
My movement forward is this. If I don't understand something I'll ask. And if I still don't understand? Well maybe I'm not meant to.

I do have to say, as someone on the camp of "you could probably ship someone else who isn't non-partnering but honestly I don't care as long as you don't harass people over this", I think it's lost on some people that the reason why so many non-partnering aroaces may become defensive over these characters even if "it's just fandom" is the fact that a lot of aroaces who do fit these stereotypes and who may fall into this camp genuinely had horrible experiences about their social circles and yes, especially this fandom site, harassing them and saying they don't exist or that they're mentally ill and should "get fixed" among other things.
As common it is to see aspecs here on Tumblr, the queer social media site, you need to understand that there's still a lot of contempt for aroaces outside and inside this place. Hell, I received an ask calling aros and aces delusional just last Christmas Day 2023 that came with a wave of increased arophobia around that time. As much as that time period was definitely discourse against aroallo men, aphobes did not cherry pick on who they're sending hate to.
Besides this, a lot of non-partnering aroaces often receive this kind of dismissal in real life too and as much as some people may think it's not a big deal, it definitely fucks up your brain when people say you and your experiences not only don't matter but you are doomed to live a lonely and miserable life if you don't find someone. Even my otherwise very supportive relatives expressed this concern and it's absolutely out of care but it's fucking damaging to constantly hear that I will die alone if I don't find a partner (romantic, platonic, or otherwise).
This is besides dismissals like this or even non-acceptance had literally barred me from mental health care when I was a teenager because my specialist said I had a "distressed sexuality" and had specialists focused on that aspect rather than all my other issues.
The shipping of a non-partnering (typically romance repulsed or uninterested) character feels like another form of dismissal for someone like me, like my sexuality is not good enough or serious enough to be respected. The shipping of these characters sometimes reinforce the narrative that non-partnering aroace people can't find happiness on their own and do need someone (romantic, platonic, or otherwise) to be happy or they will become happier if they do find this someone. People are having fun with their ships but there are still many people who don't want to spend the time actually extending grace and understanding towards me and my experiences. I'm just another discourse topic and someone who's inconvenient to some of them.
This doesn't even account for how these fan communities aren't just filled with aspec people and do extend to allos who may take some of the discourse and actively apply it in real life to other real life aspec people. People who go and interact with real human beings and may hurt them or harass them. It isn't even accounting for the fact that even online things affect real people too.
Of course, I do understand that a lot more complex aspec identities often don't get the spotlight so they may express themselves through shipping fandom characters but non-partnering people should deserve more than these people isn't really the point of this post.
The point here is that there's a reason why a lot of non-partnering (typically repulsed or uninterested) aroace people get defensive about these things even in fan communities and it's very likely that it's because aphobia and especially against the stereotypical aroace™ still very much exist outside of our little community and they can be informed by media and the fans that consume it and this shit could genuinely have negative consequences. This of course extends to those who do have complex aspec identities as society does not treat those who don't live up to what is expected as "normal" in terms of romantic relationships and sexual attraction kindly.
Distancing yourself from these aroaces who do have frustrations with how media and fandom treat their sexuality because they're being "prudes" or are just affected by "purity culture" is unhelpful to say the least and honestly veers eerily close to shit I hear aphobes say about us.
Absolutely do stop people and block them if they're instigating and participating in harassment over shipping of all things, even these aroaces, but trying to say that every person who do have issues with shipping aroace characters are the same way with this is extremely lacking nuance and absolutely dismissive of other members of the community and why they may have the opinion they hold.

what do they mean by modifiers?
They mean that asexual and aromantic aren't their own orientation, but rather can only be used as an "add on" to another sexuality in order to influence/modify that orientation. So you can be a gay or bi or straight asexual person but you are actually first and foremost just gay or bi or straight. It was used largely as an argument for why asexuality/aromanticism shouldn't count as queer in and of itself, and why straight aspec people shouldn't be included in the queer community.
Ignoring the fact that this argument falls apart the moment you consider aroace people (what exactly are my aro and ace labels modifying? The fucking void?), it also often builds on a drastically oversimplified understanding of aspec labels, downplays the influence that being aro or ace can have on someone's entire orientation (and gender!), and also completely disregards how asexuality and aromanticism have absolutely no acceptance in cisheteronormative society and how that can set someone apart and influence their entire life, even when they are straight in some other aspect.
I'm not alloace or alloaro so I won't talk on their behalf, but I've listened long enough to understand that whether or not you want to see your aspec identity as a modifier to another orientation, or your other orientation as a modifier to your aspec identity, or whether it's all interwoven and nothing is modifying anything or everything is modifying everything is up to the individual person to decide, and some exclusionist with minimal understanding of asexuality/aromanticism has no place in that discussion.

Hot Take:
Glass Joe is NOT and SHOULDN'T be a """Tumblr Sexyman"""". Here's why...
Ever since the "Forbidden Characters" page on the Sexypedia has been deleted for whatever reason, the whole damn site has become unorganized chaos. I wouldn't even consider "vandalized" parts of the wiki to be the only vandalized areas. Because the entire wiki vandalized itself!!! And it did so by being hypocritical to the "rules" and adding any single popular character imaginable on there who DOESN'T even fit the proper definition of "Tumblr Sexyman"! Here is the best definition of Tumblr Sexyman according to the Urban Dictionary:
Tumblr media
Glass Joe barely fits the qualities above, therefore he does not fit the definition of Tumblr Sexyman. Does he have a "dark side"? No. Is he not as attractive as Tumblr makes him out to be? No. He is not like the Onceler, Sans, Bill Cipher, or whatever. He's just an Ensemble Darkhorse with a seemingly twinkish figure!
The reason why people are now misusing the term, "Tumblr Sexyman" is because they see a character and they WANT them to be a sexyman, which is actually an unfortunate thing to begin with. I say it's unfortunate because fans (mostly preteens, teens, and young adults even) get MADE FUN OF for liking characters who are Sexymen. And the term-misusers are making it harder for fans to show their love for the characters without getting bullied! Real sexymen become sexymen thru weird selfcest ships, self-proclaimed Wives and Girlfriends on YT (a.k.a Fangirls), tons of Cascada-esque AMVs, fetish art, Animation Memes, etc.
If Glass Joe received all this treatment above, then yes, he will fit the bill. Another possible reason for the misuse of the Tumblr Sexyman label is so the Sexypedia can seem active and full because almost everything there FEELS like filler to me, with occasional accurate examples that deserve to stay on the wiki (E.g. Bill Cipher, Tony the Clock, Jack Horner, etc.)
Now that we have the Sexypedia site in mind, let's talk about the Aran Ryan page...
People in the Punch-Out fandom probably wanted this to happen despite Aran Ryan NOT really being a sexyman. He's just an Ensemble Darkhorse! Get used to it! Not every character popular within fandom has to BE a Sexyman anyway. And it has me questioning: Why do people want their favourite characters to be Sexymen so badly these days? What is the goal and intention behind this? (Can someone provide an answer in the notes please and thank you)
In Conclusion, Glass Joe shouldn't be a Tumblr Sexyman because he doesn't have a fan reception like the traditional Sexyman, nor does he fit in that many tacky tropes listed in the real definition. Like Aran Ryan, Glass Joe is literally just an Ensemble Darkhorse within the Punch Out fandom. End of story.

#in tags cos I'm not tryna start disk horse I just feel like ranting a bit about it cos it annoys me ahsmdhsbsgd#i'm tired of the prevalent attitude in a lot of RPG video game fandoms that men VAs suck and deserve to be ridiculed for no reason ahrbdgdgd#like it's been going on for so many years i'm tired i'm over it i'm done#having a preference for the female VAs and character options is fine lord knows i prefer to play them myself#but like mark meer??? gavin drea??? aren't bad actors???#it's a different performance and interpretation but like they're at worst FINE (but also actually good)#even in games where i have a very big preference for the female VA (ac odyssey and valhalla) the guy is still good???#i'm not big into alexios or meivor but i think their performances as deimos and odin respectively are brilliant for those stories#(and that's really a flaw in the fact they were not supposed to be main character options originally and were rewritten for that)#(so it's not on the VAs but ubisoft being dumbasses who fear making a woman the sole protagonist)#ANYWAY i know it's not that serious but it's so weird seeing people in tags on a certain post being so... nasty#about people they don't know and who afiak have been nothing but kind and appreciative of their fandoms#thank fuck honestly that bg3 doesn't have full voiced Tavs/Durges cos i know people would be freaks about the guys there too#also in games as big as these massive RPGs it's rarely just one voice director for the whole project#so a lot of the times a big reason these voice performances are very different is they're likely being directed by different people#sometimes different directors for different scenes so like. there's a lot of things that can change from page to performance because of that

What queer discourse frustrates you the most?
tbh, all of it, but especially the fucking gatekeeping on what qualifies as queer "enough" to be considered queer. If you're not cis, het, or allo, congrats! You're one of us. Simple as that.
Very close second to that is the transmed movement in the trans community, because I guess people can't quite empathize with the Filthy Poors™ or people who are in unsafe situations who risk losing, absolute bare minimum, the roofs over their heads.

Hey all you discourse people who were like “asexuality isn’t LGBT+ bc there are no consequences to not wanting children/no one will force you to have kids”
In light of the current US political climate I would just like to say
~Fuck you ~

Block people if they're affecting your mental health. Don't read comments if they'll affect your mental health.
Internet discourse is just that- on the internet. Half of this shit people argue about online really doesn't matter in the day-to-day or presents completely different.
Echo chambers aren't healthy but if interacting with certain groups of people is causing you serious anxiety or stress, you are under no obligation to engage, to answer their demands, or to fall into their pleas for attention.
Prioritize your own mental health first before you worry about making other people feel better.

Bitches will remember they had an entirely different tumblr account in 2018 they completely forgot about and then go actively looking for it only to see the aphobic shit they went through and remember why they abandoned that blog after having mental breakdowns.
It’s me, I’m bitches.

It's so disgusting to see so many alloallo people straight up spew arophobic and acephobic rhetoric that literally came from stupid ass discourse from like six years ago like COME ON
Using shit like "Ace and aro people had never been oppressed!!!" really shows your ignorant ass
It doesn't matter how much we try to explain to them that we are constantly dehumanized, ostracized, and even vilified because of our orientations because they don't fucking care
It doesn't matter how much we try to say that our sexuality and romantic orientation is still being medicalized, how it's seen as a disorder, and how so many people still try to "fix us" with conversion therapy because they don't fucking care
It also doesn't matter how many stories, articles, or studies we show them about aro and ace people being erased, harassed, threatened, or even killed for their identities because THEY DON'T FUCKING CARE

thinking ab how the "ace discourse" era of tumblr was literally a straight up moral panic, like a smaller version of the red scare or satanic panic. might have to write something further on that idk the psychology is just interesting
