“TWO ACQUITTED OF HOLDUP ATTEMPT,” Montreal Star. November 10, 1931. Page 14. ---- Third Accused Already Serving 10-Year Term On Charge ---- Saving that he was loathe to do so because he believed the man was guilty, Judge Monette in the Court of Sessions this morning acquitted Herbert Caplan, 4562 Esplanade street, of having conspired with Carl Harris, 4220 Clarke street, to hold up Sarah Silverstone, clerk, as she was returning from branch a bank at Rachel and St. Denis streets with money for the firm by which she was employed.
Harris is now serving a sentence of 10 years in the penitentiary having been convicted of having on December 2, 1930, thrown pepper in Miss Silverstone's eyes and attempted to snatch her bag containing $762 in bills just drawn from the bank.
Harris, who had failed to get away in a waiting automobile because he was held by passer-by, in the course of written confession implicated Caplan in the crime; but his evidence this morning was unsatisfactory that the judge said it was useless for the purpose of enabling him to administer justice to the accused.
In the witness stand Harris refused to answer the questions put to him by Crown Prosecutor MacPherson, saying that he did not remember the contents of the confession. Lyon Jacobs, K.C., for the accused. produced evidence to prove that Caplan had been elsewhere at the time of the crime. A third man suspected of being implicated in the crime, Sidney Finkelstein, 4058 St. Urbain street, was also acquitted on similar grounds.

i read acquittal earlier today, and then i read it again, and in between those times i've been spinning it around in my head bc you've graced the tgcf tag with another fic. usually when ppl try to write "dark" hualian it's a little eyeroll inducing but you get it. u understood book 4's characterization. nail it every time. my favorite scene was the palm reading scene and my second favorite scene was everything else. tysm for pulling this work out of wip hell, praying that u write more hualian <3
although it's been a while since i read hualian, i remember the darkfic being of a different flavor than what i was looking for. i think some people are in the unrepentantly evil love interest "i love you so much i want to kill you" camp and some people (me) are in the "i love you so much i'm going to kill everyone who has ever wronged you" camp. (i've started calling this the Most Worthy Person trope.)
hualian is a forever ship so i'm sure i'll come back around to it eventually, maybe when the next donghua season comes out or the live action. i forget that tgcf is a big fandom and when i went to check my comments the next day i was like, oh right this is what it feels like to write for a fandom that has more than 5 people in it.

News from NL, Canada, 14 June
Fluorspar Holdings Pte Ltd has received court approval to buy the inactive fluorspar mine in St. Lawrence, once owned by Canada Fluorspar.
Previously, the mine could not compete with cheaper fluorspar from other countries and faced environmental regulations that limited impurities. However, the high-grade ore available locally and the world-class geology of the deposit that lends itself to acid-grade fluorspar now favor mine operations. Fluorspar Holdings Pte Ltd has already seen success with a similar operation in South Africa and expects good returns from the St. Lawrence.

3. Bernard Doyle was acquitted of manslaughter in the death of his 17-month-old stepson in 1996 after being imprisoned for three years.
Doyle's case was one of more than 200 that were examined again as part of a government review into earlier convictions mentioning shaken-baby syndrome.
The decision to acquit Doyle restored dignity and respect to him, but he still feels responsible for his stepson's death.
4. A family in Newfoundland discovered a sheet of bedrock with a fern-shaped fossil on top of it while tending to their vegetable garden.
The discovery is believed to be one of the most important fossil sites in the world, with some specimens belonging to a group of lifeforms known as charnids from the Ediacaran period, roughly 560 million years ago.
The paleobiology team from Memorial University expects to uncover hundreds of fossils and is urging anyone who finds a similar fossil site to contact them so they can come take a look.

Former FSU Football Star Travis Rudolph Acquitted in Fatal Shooting: Seeking Healing and Reflection
Former Florida State University football star Travis Rudolph was acquitted of all charges on Wednesday in a tragic shooting incident that occurred over two years ago, resulting in the unfortunate death of a man.
Rudolph, who had been charged with one count of first-degree murder and three counts of attempted first-degree murder, was found not guilty on all counts by the court. The shooting took place outside Rudolph's Lake Park home and had been a matter of legal scrutiny since the incident occurred.
In the aftermath of the verdict, Rudolph expressed his relief outside the Palm Beach County Courthouse, stating, "I got my freedom back, and I can get back to my life." The former football star also acknowledged the nervousness he experienced throughout the legal proceedings and expressed gratitude for the prayers and support he received during this challenging time.
According to Rudolph's defense team, he was the victim on the morning of April 7, 2021, when he was allegedly attacked by four men following an argument with his then-alleged girlfriend. The defense presented evidence supporting Rudolph's claim of being a victim in the incident.
While the verdict brings closure to the legal aspects of the case, it is important to recognize that a tragic loss of life occurred, and the impact on the victim's family cannot be diminished. Acts of violence have far-reaching consequences, and it is crucial to remember and support those affected by such incidents.
As Travis Rudolph seeks to move forward from this difficult period in his life, it is essential to prioritize healing and empathy. The verdict reached by the court represents the evaluation of the evidence presented during the trial and determines Rudolph's legal responsibility in the matter.
This case serves as a reminder of the complex nature of criminal justice and the need for a thorough examination of evidence before reaching a verdict. It is hoped that all parties involved can find a path towards healing and reconciliation as they navigate the aftermath of this tragic event.
As a society, it is crucial that we continue to work towards fostering safer communities, addressing the root causes of violence, and promoting understanding and inclusivity. By supporting initiatives that aim to prevent violence, educate on conflict resolution, and promote empathy, we can strive for a future where such incidents are minimized, and justice and equality prevail.

Also on appeal acquittal for pilot Julio Poch in Argentina | Interior
According to Geert-Jan Knoops, the statement is ‘a complete rehabilitation’ for Poch and he is not being blamed for anything. It is ‘impossible that Poch can be blamed’, according to him in the verdict. “So it goes way beyond a lack of evidence.” Poch was arrested in September 2009 in Valencia, Spain, before being extradited from Spain to Argentina. This happened after the Netherlands had…

Zahid Has Renewed Faith In The Justice System
Zahid Hamidi has been acquitted by the Malaysian judiciary system. He has publicly expressed that he always had faith in the system. This is a far cry from his statements about the system when Najib was found guilty and had to go to prison. When Najib was convicted, judiciary is unfair ❎When Zahid is freed, judiciary is fair ✅Showing u how autocratic UMNO behavesVote them OUT…
