Alamo Drafthouse Explores Sensual Cinema With Isabel Sandoval And Mubi
Alamo Drafthouse Explores Sensual Cinema With Isabel Sandoval And Mubi
This July, acclaimed filmmaker Isabel Sandoval (LINGUA FRANCA, “Under the Banner of Heaven”) is teaming with Austin-based Alamo Drafthouse Cinema and MUBI for a very special, very steamy limited series. From the queer caper thrills of BOUND and THE HANDMAIDEN, to the emotionally complex webs of A SNAKE OF JUNE and GANJA & HESS, and the sheer exhilaration of MAGIC MIKE XXL, Isabel Sandoval’s…

How Many Movies Do You Need to See to Make a Theater Subscription Pay Off?
How Many Movies Do You Need to See to Make a Theater Subscription Pay Off?
Photo: Stock-Asso (Shutterstock) For many, summer is synonymous with the adventure of outdoor activities. Long hikes through the forest, morning runs along the beach, and picnics in the park are just some of the activities I will not be participating in over the next few months, though. That’s because for me, the season is synonymous with one thing: summer blockbusters. And what a blockbuster…

Netflix Race-Swaps Real-Life Heroes in Big Pharma Drama 'Painkiller' - Bleeding Fool
Jamison Ashley December 12, 2023
Netflix is facing criticism once again, this time for its casting decisions in the new series “Painkiller,” which dramatizes a major lawsuit against Purdue Pharma over opioid manufacturing. The controversy stems from what some term as “race swapping,” where the real investigators involved in taking down the company were bizarrely replaced by a fictional Black woman in the series.
The Tudum website, affiliated with Netflix, describes “Painkiller” as a suspenseful drama “inspired by true events and people,” delving into the lives affected by Purdue Pharma, the entity behind OxyContin. The portrayal in the series features actress Uza Aduba in the role of Edie Flowers, an investigator committed to building a case against Purdue and holding those accountable for the opioid epidemic. But viewers who knew the specifics of this landmark case were put-off by Netflix’s decision to misrepresent the investigators who were at the heart of the case, by replacing them with a singular Black female character.
ABSOLUTE PURE, RACIST, INTENTIONAL FUCKING OVER OF EVERYONE WITH SUCH TRASH. THIS IS ALSO APPROVED BY THE MOTION PICTURE ACADEMY, SINCE ONE OF THE NETFLIX CO-FOUNDERS IS NOW ON THE ACADEMY BOARD. NETFLIX NEEDS THEIR ASSES KICKED FOR THIS. AND UZA ADUBA, THAT TOOL CAN GO TO HELL. I HOPE BLACK PEOPLE REALIZE QUITE CLEARLY THAT HOLLYWOOD IS INTENTIONALLY MOCKING US, JUST FOR DEMANDING REPRESENTATION, BY CASTING US IN THE WRONG PROJECTS AND BY ONLY USING AND PROMOTING US AS QUEER CHARACTERS.

Saw this film in limited release yesterday and wow! Nic Cage gets to show off his range from lame dad to dream state full wild. The director is one to watch for sure- the use of mirrors and the dream-like continuation of audio as the scene cuts to the next one created such an interesting environment. Comedy shot as a horror is so interesting.
