Why should you care about quantum computers?
Post #5 on Physics and Astronomy, 23/09/23
Welcome back. It’s been a while.
First, let’s backtrack. What even are quantum computers?
Today’s computers are run on bits. These are the smallest increment of data on a computer, and are run in binary–they can be in the state of either 0 or 1. This essentially corresponds to two values: off and on.
This, therefore, means that information can only remain in one, definite state.
So, what makes quantum computers so different?
A quantum computer is run on qubits (short for quantum bits). Qubits, instead of a single state, can remain in an arbitrary superposition of states (meaning it’s not in any specific state until it’s measured). Qubits, on their own, aren’t particularly useful. But it performs one, very useful, function: it can store a combination of all possible states of the qubit into one area. This means that complex problems can be represented differently in qubits compared to bits.
Quantum computers aren’t fully developed and at their full capacity quite yet. So far, there’s nothing a quantum computer can do that a regular supercomputer cannot. However, this opens an opportunity for some wonderful new things to happen.
One of these things can include the cracking of passwords.
Today’s encryption works by using “trapdoor” functions, which means that data is easy to compute in the forward direction, but extremely difficult to crack in the reverse without special keys. Keywords, ‘extremely difficult’; it is not impossible. However, this is not a massive concern: encryption works on the basis that it would simply take too long to crack.
To give you a tangible example, 100,003 and 131,071 are relatively easy to multiply together, giving you the answer 13,107,493,213. How easy, however, would it be to determine a prime factor pair of this number? It would take a computer a long time to figure this out, since it runs on bits, which can only show one definite state of data.
With quantum computers, it’s different. As aforementioned, qubits can remain in a superposition of states; somewhere in there, the desired answer lies. It’s just a matter of obtaining the resources to make this happen.
Don’t worry, though. Ordinary people aren’t at any risk quite yet.

semester of studying: autumn🍁🍂✨
Not really a semester, probably just until half term but it’s an alliterative title so yk
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Goals
- to always complete homework on time, and if not, then to at least do some of it and be honest about what I couldn’t do instead of skiving and/or lying lol
- to study an extra one hour a day, can include homework & frees or not- depends on the day.
In terms of studying during free periods, I’m 50/50, sometimes I’ll do homework or study, sometimes I’ll catch up with friends, sometimes I’ll do whatever (read, go home, etc)- depends on who else I’m sharing the frees with, how I’m feeling, and what homework is set.
- keep up my Duolingo streak for the entire half term, and begin studying Finnish again
- try and be in school for the days where I have lessons
or, better phrased:
- try not to miss school. PLEASE.
- and no skiving (unless I really need to lmao)
- catch up/get ahead on the Goodreads reading challenge
Do a bit of some non-screen hobby every day (read, listen to music, crochet, whatever)
Even if I don’t do all of these every day, because realistically I won’t, this is still a benchmark for what to do on good days

29/10/22 • 100 days of productivity - 5/100
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
• it is so hard trying to revise when you would rather be doing something else - hence why i try to wake up early to study but my alarm has just decided to stop working?!! i need to replace asap
• the fact that i seem to be always doing history yet i get the lowest grades in it will always be so funny to me
• i go back to school in 2 days yet i still have so much work to do (but i have done quite a lot considering it’s my holiday) the workload is so hard - a levels really are not for the weak ig
• tomorrow i have to wake up at 5am to do some work because i know once it hits 12pm i will not want to think about studying again..
• i also decided to show my notes i’ve made these past few days!! (for history ofc what’s new)
tasks completed today:
- began EPQ presentation handout
- re-drafted teacher feedback on assessment
- practiced presentation
- typed up tudors chapter 20 notes

Why forensic psychology?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wikipedia (only the best sources around here, I know) describes forensic psychology as '[involving] the application of psychological knowledge and methods to help answer legal questions arising in civil or criminal proceedings'. Therefore, forensic psychologists can be found at many stages of the criminal justice system: profiling for police, being an expert witness in trials or running rehabilitation programs in prisons.
I'm learning a lot about the realities of the field in the book I'm reading at the moment: 'The dark side of the mind' by Kerry Daynes. She reports that HM Prison Service is the biggest employer of forensic psychologists, who are the hidden, after-the-fact professionals that come in after the media goes away (because an offender does not simply disappear into thin air after sentencing).
I chose to study forensic psychology at degree-level because it ultimately combines my interests of true crime and psychological theory. I really enjoyed it as an optional topic in A-level psychology: it being the one assessment I 100%ed.
I've always been an academically-minded person: I used to want to be a journalist, then an author - and when I thought I wanted to be in the police, the practical side of things wasn't for me (as you can see in this post). University was always going to be the goal, and I'm the first in my family to do it.
I've just re-read my personal statement, hahaha - you really have to write like a boastful know-it-all. I opened with philosophical narratives on immorality, and ended with the fact that I want to conduct my own research on the nature of the criminal. Cheesy stuff.
But it's true: the big question is 'why do people commit crime?'
I'll let you know if I find out ;)
