365 Marvel Comics Paper Cut-Out SuperHeroes - One Hero, Every Day, All Year…

June 23rd - Black Cat

Felicia Hardy, the sometimes villain/sometimes hero known as The Black Cat, is the daughter of an infamous international thief who was called ‘The Cat.’  Following an incident in her young adulthood where she was assaulted, Felicia trained rigorously to hone her skills as a combatant and acrobat so to be able to extract vengeance on the man who had assaulted her.  When this man was killed in a car accident, Felicia felt cheated of her revenge and opted instead to utilize her new skills to follow in her father’s footsteps and become a renown cat burglar, dubbing herself The Black Cat.  

Felicia proved even more daring, successful and renown than her father and it was not long before all of New York’s high society lived in fear of having their treasures pilfered by the notorious Black Cat.  

In her role as a costumed criminal, The Black Cat has had multiple run-ins with The Amazing Spider-Man and the two would go on to have a highly complicated relationship.  Initially adversaries, The Black Cat would end up aiding Spider-Man in foiling a diabolical scheme endeavored by Dr. Octopus.  Felicia and Spidey would go on to have a brief romantic affair.  

Some time later, a specialized process arranged by The Kingpin endowed The Black Cat with strange but rather apropos super powers.  Specifically she gained the ability to effect the probability fields around her and essentially cause ‘bad luck’ to occur to others of her choosing.    

The Black Cat would go on to have many more adventures, often as a thief but also very frequently as a hero.  She became a member of the Heroes for Hire and aided numerous superheroes, including Dr. Strange, Wolverine, Silk and Iron Man.  The Black Cat also went up against the Thieves Guild in an adventure that saw her facing off against her former lover, Odessa Drake.  

A version of Felicia Hardy plays a small role in the Sony Films movie Amazing Spider-Man 2, portrayed by actress Felicity Jones. The Black Cat first appeared in pages of The Amazing Spider-man Vol. 1 #194.

Tutorials: Making Certain Parts of a Texture Glow & Uploading to the Workshop

Programs required: - Photopea (or other photo-editing tools). - VTFedit - Crowbar or Left 4 Dead 2 Authoring Tools. I recommend Crowbar as it's more user-friendly and deals with even-powered thumbnails. - Notepad++. If you don't have this program NOW, you'll want to use it later for editing the VMT code. I'd do it now if I were you.

Intro: This is a super quick and easy tutorial for those who want to learn about making parts of a texture glow-in-the-dark. This doesn't teach how to make the glowing give off emission.

The second part of this tutorial is geared towards those who are modding for Source Engine only. Once you're done with the first part of the tutorial, feel free to keep practicing until you get the hang of it.

Games required: Any game that allows the textures to be edited and glows in the dark is cool.

Follow the steps very carefully below once you're ready to start.

I'll be using Source Engine, but I've seen @kingfalconcombos using this method when they're modding The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (PC) with ease.

1ST PART: MAKING PART OF A TEXTURE GLOW

Open a texture that you want to edit. For this tutorial, we'll be using Coach's body texture.

This is in full resolution, so if you want to save it and open it in Photopea to follow along, go for it!

2. Once the texture is open in Photopea, use another image that you want to put an overlay of. For this tutorial, we'll use a very hungry caterpillar as an example.

3. In Photopea, click on Open and Paste. Put the caterpillar anywhere that you'd like to put him.

I'll put him here for now.

4. Select the space surrounding the hungry caterpillar.

5. Go to the Channels tab of Photopea. You must have the hungry caterpillar's layer selected. Not Coach's texture layer.

If you click on the wrong layer that doesn't have the hungry caterpillar, it will come out wonky.

6. Once your selection is inverted to the item you want to glow, fill it with a white color.

A very helpful tip for remembering what parts will be seen or not when making glow-in-the-dark parts/textures.

White is visible, black is not.

This will help you know in the final result of which of them will be visible once it's rendered in any game. This also doesn't remove any color properties that the original glowing part has.

FINAL STEP

7. Export the image in the format needed. For Source Engine, you can export it as TGA since VTFedit will be used later to convert it into a file suitable for the Source Engine.

If you're using another engine other than the Source Engine - export it to the file format your game requires. I'm not sure how to resolve it if your engine for a different game doesn't accept it.

CONCLUSION

You're done with the tutorial of how to make certain parts of an image glow!

If you're using Source Engine, you'd continue the process of packing the texture and uploading it into a suitable VPK to put within the right directory for it to show in-game.

Let's take a look at how our hungry caterpillar appears on Coach's back!

2ND PART: UPLOADING TO SOURCE ENGINE CONTINUE IF YOU WANT TO USE IN SOURCE ENGINE

If you want to use the texture in Source Engine, follow the steps as you would in creating a VPK to simply replace the texture.

This will teach you how to upload custom textures to Source Engine with more user-friendly tools.

9. Open VTFedit. Click on IMPORT to bring your picture of choice into the editor. Select the new image you should have saved in PNG, TGA, etc (formats) to upload.

10. Once the image is uploaded, it should look like this in the editor.

11. Go to File < Save As. This will save your file in a VTF format.

12. Before saving your file, remember that it must be the same name as the original file you opened it with. For Coach's texture, it'd be labeled as coach_body_color.

13. Create a file directory that mimics Left 4 Dead 2's game directory in which you found the file. For this tutorial, we'll be using:

materials < models < survivors < coach < DROP VTF HERE.

Once you saved your VTF in the folder, it should look like this.

14. Now that your new VTF file is saved, you'll need to create a VMT file.

Go back to VTFeditor, and then choose Tools < Create VMT

When the windows show up, *leave the Textures tab alone* as this is different from creating a custom texture.

Go to your Options tab.

15. What we want to do is to have the model cast a proper shadow with the whole body, not just parts of the glowing images having shadows only.

Within the Options tab of your new VMT, choose your shader as VertexlitGeneric NOT UnlitGeneric.

VertexlitGeneric makes the vertices of your vector glow. UnlitGeneric will make the whole object in question glow, and this is what we're trying to avoid.

Within the Surface 1 tab, you don't have to choose anything. You can choose to leave it blank, or you can choose one of the surfaces by default. Choosing a surface will determine what sound and type of particle damage will occur if you shoot it.

Within the checkboxes below, leave the Translucent property unchecked.

If you leave this checked, the rest of the object be rendered as transparent except for the glowing texture parts.

This is an example of what it should look like below:

16. Once you're done, click CREATE. A prompt will come up to ask where you want to save the VMT file. Place it in the same folder as your VTF file.

17. Now close VTFeditor. It won't be needed anymore after these steps.

18. If you're using Notepad++, now's the time to open the file. When you open the file, you'll only see two properties appear. This would be your file directory and you should ONLY be seeing $basetexture and $surfaceprop (if you chose one).

The newest value we're going to add is $selfillum with a value of "1".

Go to the end of either line of the codes, and then enter

$selfillum "1"

19. SAVE THE FILE.

20. You're done editing your VMT! Now all that's left is to create an addon out of your new VMT and VTF files.

21. Go back to the Left 4 Dead 2 addon directory.

With your new folder, it should be structured as:

Addon Name < materials < models < survivors < coach < your VMT and VTF files

DRAG AND DROP your new addon folder to the VPK.EXE shortcut.

This will create an addon that'll be available to use in-game.

Voila! Here's a new addon to use.

FINAL THIRD PART: TESTING

Now that you have a new addon to test out, open the game.

Have the game load to a level where you can see Coach.

his voice rolls, like a click on a cassette, and you know that peter is not really there.

because it’s all a little blurry. his voice, the door opening, the feeling when he kneels down next to you, his breath hot in your ear.

it’s all some remanent of a dream. a brief moment where you might wake up, but decide not to.

“i’m serious,” his voice ebbs and flows, waving in and out, like your consciousness. “you know i don’t like it when you wait up for me.”

you groan and roll even further into the couch. your face is smushed, and your hair is a mess, sweaty because you’re drowning under every blanket in the house. it smells like cotton, and peter’s deodorant, and potato chips that you probably dropped through the cushions.

you dig your nose in deeper, trying to get back to that dream.

peters probably not actually there, you think, because if he was he would’ve kissed you awake. his hand would be lazily running through your hair, and his body would be pressed against yours. you would be cuddling by now.

real peter is much nicer than dream peter, who shakes your shoulder, albeit massaging you right afterward. “c’mon, bug, we’re going to bed.”

“sleeping,” you mumble, pulling away from him.

dream peter continues to try and wake you up, while you wonder—amidst the dream, no doubt—when real peter will be home. you want to be drowning in his collarbone instead of your own sweat.

there’s a kiss next to your ear. “you’re going to fall through the couch.”

“the couch would never betray me.”

“we’ll see if you’re saying that in the morning, when your neck is bent the wrong way,” he whispers, and rests his head against yours. you feel it as he breathes out, relaxes. almost like he’s purring into your ear.

so you keen into him, a bit awkwardly, considering that it’s his forehead. “why’d you wake me up?”

“you can’t sleep here.”

“c’mere,” you murmur to him, your hand wrapping around the back of his neck, fingertips just brushing his hair. “cuddle with me.”

“being cute isn’t going to stop me from moving you.”

“peter,” you try and push him away, “go to bed.”

“why are you out here?” his nose trails down your hair, to your neck. “it’s almost four in the morning.”

you ponder this, and decide that you don’t really remember what you were doing before you fell asleep here, with your hand shoved in the crook of your neck. “the beds cold,” you slur, head falling back into the cushions as you doze.

“that’s because all of the blankets are out here. why didn’t you turn the heat up?”

he’s playing with some baby hair by your ear now, trying to lull you to sleep, probably, because he loves you.

“i was waiting for you,” you whisper this like a prayer, “and now you’re here.”

“you waited in the wrong spot. i would’ve come to bed with you. there’s no room for me here,” he smiles when you finally turn your head towards him. he’s got a smudge on his nose, and his eyes are sunken in—aged from exhaustion.

“i know.”

you’re both whispering. trying not to wake that drowsy, lovesick part of yourself right now.

“hmm?” he leans into you, nose brushing your cheek. almost like he’s breathing you in. “what, bug?”

“i wanted to fall asleep with you.”

then his eyes are wide open, and he leans back, brows furrowed in a tight line. “i told you i was going out.”

you muse at his confused face, and lean back towards him. “i know. i didn’t know when you’d be home.”

“you could’ve called.”

“i’m not going to interrupt your repertoire with a burglar at midnight. it’s rude.”

“not to me.”

you tsk, and lean away, back into the pillow comforting you while simultaneously scheming to ruin your morning.

“you need more sleep than i do,” peter adds, trying to keep you awake with his sheer willpower, his hands squirm under your shoulders. “we’ve talked about this.”

“no, you threatened to tell my mom—“

“that’s not what i said,” peter interrupts, groaning into the sofa.

“that i wasn’t getting enough sleep. and i said that you could make your own decisions, but that i wasn’t going to stop waiting up for you.”

“it makes me feel bad,” he ignores your gentle protesting. “i don’t want to keep you up.”

“peter, it’s not like you’re out dancing with strippers.”

he laughs, unexpectedly. and you grin back at him, with a sheer conviction undiluted by any hints of remaining sleep.

“you’re up helping people. i don’t mind waiting for you,” you emphasize this by leaning in to kiss his forehead, tasting sweat and not minding at all.

“you’re going to be tired tomorrow. when did you fall asleep?”

you acknowledge your win for what it is, and sit up on the couch, looking around your apartment like you can’t remember where you are. “probably an hour ago. i didn’t know when you’d be home, and i waited a while, but then i moved to the couch so you’d have to wake me up if i fell asleep.”

“so this was an elaborate scheme, huh?” peter laughs at you as his teeth graze your cheek. his chaste kiss makes you warm.

“i learned from the best.”

peter chuckles against you, and the two of you sit like that for a moment. calculating each others breathing like there’s something you might miss, however brief.

and then you smile at him, and he smiles back. “bed?” he asks you, softly, fingertip running against the skin of your jaw. you nod.

his arms wrap around you as he picks you up, your head rested comfortably on his shoulder, legs wrapped around his waist.

“i’m leaving you on the couch next time,” he threatens as he walks, “just so you know.”

“then we’ll both wake up with sore backs. not just you.”

peter snorts. “i didn’t say i would be there.”

“like you can sleep without me.”

he doesn’t say anything to that, but you feel him murmur in your hair suspiciously.

peter sets you down on the bed softly, pushing your legs so you’ll lay down, then covering you with the comforter. he tucks you in like any average middle aged dad.

when you grin he nods, very satisfied with himself.

“i’m just gonna change,” he says, taking a step back.

“hurry. i’m tired.”

“now, look who’s talking,” he shakes his head, but moves swiftly to the bathroom. you hear it as he runs the sink, as he bangs his foot on something and curses, and when he pads back into the bedroom, looking like a young child sneaking out of bed in his pajamas.

you laugh. “where did you get those?”

peter looks down to himself. to the many cartoon styled spider-man’s dancing across his cotton pajama set. “what? this old thing.”

“i don’t think i can be seen in public with you if you’re wearing that.”

“we are in the privacy of our bedroom,” he points out.

“i don’t think i can be in the same room with you if you’re wearing that.”

peter shakes his head, pouting like he’s disappointed, but he slips the shirt off, a concession he’s apparently willing to make.

though you don’t doubt that there are ulterior motives to this move.

“c’mon,” you whine to him, “i’m cold.”

“you’re so needy.”

you roll your eyes, but sink into him as he shuffles from beside you, laying his head near yours. “you’re not coddling me.”

“i’m so very sorry, my dear,” he whispers, and wraps his arms around you.

“shh,” you nuzzle your nose into his neck, and murmur against his hot skin. “i want to go back to the dream i was having.”

peter must be laughing at you, you can tell, even slightly asleep, because something jostles you.

“what was it about?”

you smile against him, listening to his heart like a hymn you’re devoted to. “i’ll tell you in the morning.”

he whispers something, brief, a whisper in the quiet of the room. but you feel the words as he settles into the bed, his calloused hands running over your skin.

and you fall asleep; hands clutching the others heart.
