GL Webtoon 'Amongst Us' Creator Announces Kickstarter for Book Two
Webtoon Author Shilin Huang announced Friday that she is set to begin crowdfunding efforts to fund a second bound volume of her GL series Amongst Us in March. This comes aftera four-year gap following a successful Kickstarter for the first volume, Soulmates, which exceeded its CA$ 17,000 funding goal five times over.
Amongst Us is a slice of life webcomic about eccentric musicians and girlfriends Veloce and Blackbird. Set in the modern day, the series jumps between their lives as young adults and their first meeting in school. It is published for free digitally on Webtoon, Tapas, X (formerly Twitter), and the author's website.
The series is an alternative universe spin-off of Shilin's long-running fantasy webtoon Carciphona, although it is entirely separate from it and can be enjoyed without having read Carciphona.
The second Amongst Us book will feature episodes 21-48 of the series.
Amongst Us has received praise from fans and critics for its striking characters, humor, and artwork. I awarded the first volume a perfect 10/10 score, praising it as "a masterful combination of comedy an subtle romance."
Seven Seas Entertainment licensed the series and released a new edition of the first book in August of 2023.

It's so strange to admit but the piece of media that has influenced me the most is probably @okolnir 's (hi! If i accidentally tagged you! I don't know what your notification policies are, I just need to give proper credit! ;-;) web comic Amongst Us. I wasn't even asked this question, but it appeared on some ask game posts and I just... Kept thinking about it. And this is the conclusion I arrived to.
I actually ended up rethinking a lot over the process or reading (and re-reading. For at least 20 times now), especially the way both characters handle relationship with other people. The topic of socialising is the one I struggle deeply with and it's just... Both the main characters! I understand and relate to both of them! They deal with making friends and building relationships their own ways and neither of them are incorrect but of course they're gonna have strong options on it because they're so different!
This particular line pops up in my mind whenever I start thinking that some people should already understand what I think of them based on my behaviour. But it's really not true! I don't understand how people really think of me either! What gives me the right to assume they do, when I could just as well be much more open and sincere about it? And it's just the way it's phrased, as well. Something about this just strikes home so much. I'm not kidding when I way this comic saved my relationship with many people.
Over time, I think I started understanding Blackbird more and more, too.
Sometimes you just want to keep people at arm's length, but even if you're clear about your boundaries and preferences, it doesn't mean other people will be. And I've been on the other side of it, too: when you assume someone thinks of you as a friend but it turns out they're just being courteous the entire time (not necessarily that they actually hate you - people's definition of friendship vary vastly, and I can admit mine's pretty unusual as well), it hurts a lot. But, especially in work setting, expressing either that hurt or your actual opinions can ruin things a lot. So sometimes it's better to just... Bear with it.
So in reality, both of them are right. There's not one definite answer how to handle those situations, nor how to just... Live among people, I think. Every person chooses for themselves, and that's fine.
Whenever I need a reminder of that, I go reread the comic.
(and, of course, I also love it as a classical music nerd. How could I not?)

Author's Lesbian AU Webcomic of Her Own Story Gets Licensed by Seven Seas
On Wednesday, October 19, Seven Seas Entertainment announced that, through its team-up with Hiveworks Comics, it has licensed Shilin Huang's Amongst Us. The publisher will release the graphic novel digitally and in paperback with a new cover in July 2023.
The full-color webcomic turned graphic novel is a slice-of-life Yuri "alternative universe" spin-off of the author's fantasy manga, Carciphona, that reimagines its characters in the modern world. In the original series, the dangerous assassin blackbird and the stoic sorceress Veloce are bitter rivals, but here, they are two young musicians in love (though much of the animosity remains in the form of nonstop teasing and bickering). Amongst Us can be enjoyed independently of Carciphona, and no background knowledge of the characters is needed.
The author describes the story:
How do you know when you've found your other half? Is it because she can make you feel all warm and fuzzy with all the hugs, snuggles, and kisses? Or is it because she's on your level in food fights, got your back in third-wheeling your friend, and knows exactly how to bribe you? Whatever it is, these two soulmates know they have already found the one for them.
Amongst Us is a slice-of-life comic about the mundane lives of Veloce and Blackbird—an eccentric couple with strange chemistry, striking personalities, and unhesitating love for each other.
Amongst Us is released as a webcomic on Shilin's website, Tapas, and Webtoon Canvas. Since it began in 2017, it has gained over 5 million views. The author previously published the first volume, Soulmates, in collaboration with Hiveworks Comics in 2020 after a Kickstarter campaign.
YuriMother reviewed the graphic novel, awarding it a perfect 10/10 final score, praising its artwork, characters, and writing.
