I'd love if people reblogged and tagged this poll with their answer, their religious identity (if any), and the type of magic they practice! No judgement for any particular answer, just genuinely curious.

The Ancestors
I really want to tell y'all something really validating, especially as a Black witch though it's a little sad too.
You know how we just choose our ancestors? We decide that on these people of the past, the Black people we remember and such, they're our ancestors now?
They do the same to us.
I was 13. Walking the same footsteps that many slaves had on Washington's plantation. Seeing these little shacks that could barely hold up. Those were where our people slept, spoke of freedoms, whispered fears. That is where they stayed and we're forced to reside. I looked at the fields that our people used to be in.
Spirituals rang in my head that day, songs I've never heard before while I was lingering behind the group. Sounds of whispers and the feeling of eyes laid on me.
Eyes of wonder, amazement, curiosity. They didn't know me, I didn't know them. But in that moment, they understood we had prospered, we were thriving. In that moment, I was their child, I was beyond their wildest dreams.
Small black girl, cuddled up in warm clothes, not confined to labor, free of chains. Staring back into how far we have come.
As far as I know, I have no connection to that plantation. I don't know where we came from, and I doubt I ever truly will.
Understand that they had to deal with their friends and families being split apart, sold to another who would brutalize and torture our people, creating hell on earth for us.
They know we can't find our specific ancestry! They know and just as we reach out to them without a care of how they are connected to us, whether we are truly related or not, they don't care either. They see us, and call us kin and cheer on our prosperity because we are their legacy regardless.
We do not claim them. They do not claim us, we just reached and grasped the other side. So if you're willing, reach.

Day 10 & 11 of Countdown To Working With The Ancestors 101. If you are interested in learning to work with spirits of the dead and ancestors, then check out my new class on working with the ancestors 101.
Today's post is about my great grandparents, on my paternal fathers side.
My great grandparents were born in Ireland. My great grandfather's name was Patrick McNeeley. He was born in 1894, and both of his parents died before he was 20 yrs old. I don't know where he was from in Ireland, but I do know that he and my great grandmother were together before coming to America and got married in ohio.
My great grandmother's name was Ella Theresa Treacy. She was born in Clogh, Cappalusk District, Galway county, Ireland, in 1894. When I look back at some of the records, I am confused because they say she was the head of household, but it also says married, not widowed or divorced? There are so many mysteries looking into my family's past. I did find something interesting when going through records from my family in Ireland. Apparently, close to where some of my family is from, there was a famous pirate queen named Grace O'Malley. The more I learn about my ancestors and my past, the more I grow. This statement is not true for everyone. Not everyone feels this way. Some people have a disconnect to their family and ancestry, and that's OK.
As I post these small descriptions of my family, I feel the power growing between me and them and their assistance in helping me with my daily life.

I've always been drawn to spirituality and metaphysics. It seems to be inherited from both of my parents.
My mom used to (actually I'm sure she still does) listen to Coast to Coast AM every night to lull her to sleep. I was scared of the dark and a lot of other things as a child so I slept in her bed a lot. I have no idea how she falls asleep listening to that show. I would be either intrigued or terrified as George Noory and his guests would talk about things such as aliens, ghosts, and pyramids.
She also used to take me on walks and point out which wild plants and flowers could be eaten or made into tea, and we'd enjoy a bite together.
I remember she had this huge book that was about astrology. I loved to bring it out during sleepovers so we could all read about our signs and gasp at how accurate it could be.
She also taught me how to pray the rosary.
My parents split up during my early years, and it wasn't long before my dad had this new girlfriend who was an old highschool sweet heart. She became an inspiration to me. I received some books from her; The Way of the Peaceful Warrior and The Ringing Cedar Series. Reading these through 8th and 9th grade opened the door to spiritual practices that forever changed my life, and I felt a potent calling from nature. I began meditating and seeking "enlightenment". I was even gifted a pointed quartz crystal (which mysteriously disappeared) by my aunt who practiced reiki. I had no idea the significance of crystals or how reiki was suppose to work at the time.
It wasn't until I was around the age of 18 that I made the connection to what I believed with witchcraft and paganism. Once I did, I took a visit to Pyewackets, the local witch shop, and purchased my first tarot deck. Along with that, I scoured the local thrift shops and managed to find a Silver Ravenwolf.
Let's fast forward a few years. I got deep into it. The forest was my church and the Fae eventually became my guides. For years I was learning and diving deep into the otherworld. I dove so deep I began to feel like I was drowning. Chaos and isolation started to wreak havoc on my well being. It wasn't just developing my practice anymore; it became escapism and there was no firm ground to stand on.
Seemingly out of nowhere, Jesus showed himself to me. My world flipped upside down. I felt like I could breathe again and I had firm footing and a good foundation. I decided anything remotely pagan would have to go. I even stopped studying herbalism because I associated it with witchcraft to heavily to stomach it. Legalism started to creep around me.
I eventually broke loose from the evangelical, protestant worldview as my desire to work with the elements and nature grew within me again.
I decided that suppressing my natural and inherited inclination towards a mystic outlook wasn't healthy, just as it's unhealthy to suppress your sexuality.
Yesterday, a ritual bath took place that was an initiation back into my pagan ways, guided by God.
I feel more connected to my spirituality then ever before. I'm so blessed and I hope others who experience a conflict between Christianity and Paganism can embrace themselves as who they are just as Jesus would. I know I won't always be accepted for this, and I know it will be hard at times. But I've never been truer to myself until now and no one can take that away from me.
I'm back, witches.

Ancestral Messages Box
I have a fun thing to discuss today - how to make an ancestral message box! This is one of my favorite features on my ancestral altar, as it is a wonderful way to communicate with them.
Tumblr media
For me, I use an old cigar box. Not only did my anitos have a thing for tobacco, but it leaves plenty of room for both paper messages and a few offerings to show my appreciation. Tabak also speaks of swords in their tongue, so I was happy to grab this one for the deceased warriors. I've seen people craft their own lovely boxes for this, from scratch, if they want a certain type of wood. Others have used tins or small boxes that are about the size of a tarot deck. You may decorate it however you'd like - you may want to paint it a certain color or draw on it. Consider what would best honor and represent them.
You'll use slips of paper with messages to your ancestors as your form of communication to put inside the box. Got something sweet to say? They will be grateful for it. Have a request or need help? Ask for their assistance. Need to vent? Let them be a comforting shoulder to cry on. Want to tell them something on a significant date, such as their birthday or death date? Place a gift in there with a letter to them. Want to get to know an ancestor you've never met before? See if they will come to you in meditation or dreams. Leave offerings of their favorite things in there and then shut it to signify your message going out to them.
If you wish to light a candle near it, this has become a popular method to signify their spirit. Some will put the graveyard dirt of their ancestors graves inside. Others will put personal items in there to feel more like home. Taglocks (such as your hair) can be a good thing to include.
I like to put some cash or coins in there so it can go with them into the spirit world. Using their currency is a good choice, if possible. I have a spell jar to aid in communication that stays there. If it's that time of the month to write them something, I'll write it on whatever paper I have handy. If I can either make or use parchment paper, that is my preference. Stones for them to keep have a permanent residence too.
This is a beautiful small form of contact to have if you practice ancestral veneration. Good luck!
