Animation art from the intro to the 1966 BATMAN TV show. (Art by Lee Mishkin.)
I was a kid when BATMAN (1989) came out. It was a massive pop culture phenomenon, here in Holland too, and someone somewhere in television network land shouted out, “Quick! Batman! What do we have!”, and someone somewhere remembered the old TV show, and then someone somewhere dug up and dusted off that old TV show and pushed it into running a few more laps. This hopelessly Bat-crazed kid tho thought the show was hopelessly quaint and after a few episodes didnt tune in anymore same Bat-time, same Bat-channel.
Annoying snarky tone aside, it’s actually a fun show. It has many fans still, and fans are never wrong.
One thing I only notice now: is that Clayface, between Catwoman and the knife-wielding Texarkana Phantom Killer? (Is that Catwoman?) Also, who are the two villains who lead the charge? There’s one who looks like Shaggy’s evil scientist uncle and a green-shaded one with a scaley mask. They seem too distinctive to be just generic villains. Sending out a Bat-signal to any Bat-fans…

I don't think about the Roman Empire, I think about the disappearance of Bella Goth.
Before I embark on a complete portfolio revamp I thought I'd just do something fun that appeals to my inner 11 year old. Should I do Don Lothario and the Calientes next?

some self indulgent rough character expression sheets! I felt like designing an all queer cast of workers at a coffee co-op heh

Original Baxter stockman Basement painting by me. Loved making this. Early on this location played a bigger part in the story. We returned to it multiple times through out the old version of the film. Mondo gecko used to be held in a cage here. Baxter would buy stolen/illegal exotic animals to experiment on, There were story boards where Baxter exploded an alligator in the kiddy pool. We had kind of a weird amount of animal death in the old version 😂. There was also a beach boys needle drop. It was pretty tight actually. Can you find the Easter egg?

I decided that this week it's Ghastly Week on eBay, and I figured I'd share some stuff over here too!
Up top is (I think) my first drawing of Ghastly after the pilot. You can see some early Estroy sketches and my notes on who I was planning to hire for storyboards.
The rest of the sketches are from the model pack we did for the redesign. And at the bottom, there's the title card image from "The Pie Who Loved Me".
Since ECC was my Saturday Morning Action Cartoon Satire show, I knew I wanted an Evil-Lyn/Baroness type character in the crew. But it always bothered me that those women didn't really have anything going for their characterization. So I decided that Ghastly would basically be a good person. She was really just into science and didn't have any interest in taking over the world. She probably would have bailed on the whole operation long ago if she weren't not-so-secretly in love with her boss' mind.
No one said she had good taste.
She's got the rubber outfit, which was also inspired by G.I. Joe's Baroness. And probably all of the goth clubs I was going to. It seemed funny to me that anyone would choose to wear a rubber catsuit on a hot tropical island.
Since Grey DeLisle was already doing the voice for Mandy, I had some idea of how versatile she was. She'd done a Judy Garland impression for me at some point, and that was the starting point for Ghastly's voice.
I wrote Ghaslty's speech patterns and penchant for calling her boss "Chief" after The Beverly Hillbillies' Jane Hathaway.

TINTIN animation art from the 1950s-1970s. The best (and the most faithful) adaptation of the original comics has to be the 1990s animated series. Yet there’s a charm to the earliest attempts— the sacred source material packaged as a Saturday morning cartoon!—and the 1970s films have the distinction of being blessed by Tintin’s creator, Hergé, and can therefore be considered as additions to the original comics.
