Book!Lucy and Book!Lockwood’s relationship vibe is April Ludgate and Andy Dwyer from Parks and Rec and i love it so much. Lucy is a prickly pear who hates the world besides her chosen people, and tbh from an outsider perspective she’s a kinda creepy girl who regularly talks to dead people, and the only person she likes from the start is Lockwood. And Lockwood is a golden retriever boy who loves her very deeply, immediately and unexpectedly, and just wants to protect her from the world.

October 22nd - Doctor Druid

Anthony Ludgate grew up in England and relocated to the United States to attend Harvard University where he earned a doctorate in psychology.  Through his studies, Ludgate became fascinated with the occult, particularly the fabled magic possessed by Druids in ancient times.  Ludgate began researching the spiritualists of Tibet, coming to believe that a sect of monks may have refined the same sorts of magics utilized by Druids.  Legato ended up seeking out a lama in the Himalayas who turned out to be the powerful mystic known as The Ancient One.

At the time, The Ancient One was more interested in seeking a worthy successor than hearing tales of the Celts. He unlocked Anthony's mystic potential and taught him a number of spells before asking the young man to leave Kamar-Taj.

Returning West, Ludgate used the magic he had learned to become the mystical hero known as Doctor Druid.  In an early adventure, Dr. Druid aided the Eternal, Makkari , and a group of Monster hunters battle the Deviants.

Following a moderately successful career as a superhero, Druid was invited to join The Avengers.  Not long thereafter, Druid was entranced by the villainous Ravona.  Manipulated by Ravona, Druid undermined The Avengers, causing serious injury to Capatin Marvel (Monica Rambeau).  Ravona was ultimately defeated and Dr. Druid became lost in the time stream.    

Able to shake free of Ravona’s thrall, Druid managed to return to the 616 Universe and attempted to resume his career as a superhero.  He was only active for a brief time before he was killed by Daimon Hellstrom.  

It was not the end for Dr. Druid as he ended up resurrected in the bizarre dimension of Weirdworld.  It proved a realm where Druid has been able to consolidate tremendous powers and he has tyrannically ruled portions of Weirdworld, opposed by the lost warrior Arkon.

I think we need to acknowledge that druids and druidry are more complicated than just having, like, plant powers-- and they certainly aren't earth-bending tunnel dwellers. I do understand why genre fiction conflates the title of "druid" with forests and flora- or fauna- centric practices; tree symbolism and the performance of rituals in groves or forests are both historically accurate, and "neo-druid" reconstructionists often focus on environmental spirituality and even perform environmental activism.

A lot of our knowledge about historical druids comes from second hand-records, but we understand the title of "druid" to describe healers and spiritual leaders, as well as figures of legal and political authority in pre-Christian Celtic and Gaulois civilizations. Druid characters appear in mythology and literature, particularly those that are central to religious beliefs and folk history of the region, where they fulfill a similar role to witches, wizards, and soothsayers in other canons.

All of which is to say that the word "druid" exists in a specific cultural context, one which, having been colonized and subjugated by forces of Christianity and Western imperialism, ought to be respected and preserved-- and that context is much deeper and more complex than people who wear green and control trees or dirt or whatever. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with the Anthony Ludgates of the world, or Rictor's weird cave friends, but I think it's worth taking note of, especially when it comes to books like Excalibur that are very concerned with things like national identity, and drawing on specific historical and cultural material.

How do you feel about Druid?

Greetings, anon!

I don't know much about Druid, to be honest. I don't think of him as an important character in the magic community, and it's mostly because of how writers care so little about him as well.

Waid tried but my feelings were pretty much neutral. He's been good and evil, but I hardly think this mystery around his morals was well-performed in Surgeon Supreme. Excuse my langague, but in fact I find it quite boring.

The only aspect that makes me feel a little bit of sympathy for the character is the fact that TAO used him as a test run for Stephen. TAO was quite cruel in that regard. That said, I haven't read many of his comic books, nor I desire to (this is why you're completely free to disagree and/or look for other people's opinions,).

When it comes to magic characters, I'm WAY MORE invested in Stephen, Clea, Victor, Illyana and, currently, Jericho. Perhaps one day I'll give him a try. In the meantime, I can't give you a solid perspective, my apologies =/
