Okay for the maybe 3 people interested here is a brief overview of the Lesbian Hidekane Tokyo Ghoul AU

Okay so there are 2 main changes in this AU that effects the timeline of events/other little changes:

Hide and Kaneki are women

Kaneki was turned into a ghoul as a child

How I decided this would go is that Kaneki (age 10) would be walking to the store one night to buy herself dinner (as her cannonically neglectful aunt refused to feed her) and she gets kidnapped by a ghoul from Aogiri and then successfully experimented on by Dr.Kanou.

Aogiri wanting to, you know, increase their numbers and have another one-eyed ghoul in their ranks begin to ‘train’ Kaneki into believing in their ideals and to become a lethal fighter. (I don’t think it needs to be said Aogiri doesn’t care she’s a child when it comes to their methods of doing this)

Kaneki is there for 2 years, and for the most part has the willpower to not completely fall to their side. At the end of these 2 years Kaneki goes to a fit of mental instability and rage. This causes the kaguja that Aogiri was trying to make her to be to break lose and she destroys the hideout she is being kept in as it is at it’s weakest.

Then as you would expect she is found by Antieku and begins her mental recovery, although for a very long time she is selectively mute and adverse to touch.

Through Antieku, Kaneki meets Hide, whose dads start becoming regular customers a few months into Kanekis stay. Kaneki was weary at first but because of Hides persistent interest in her and her willingness to meet Kaneki halfway in ways others never did, they quickly form a deep connection.

Kaneki starts going to school eventually when she starts speaking in small bits again and her and Hide become nearly inseparable.

Hide figures Kaneki is a ghoul a feed months after they start being friends but Hides (overly) intense bind with Kaneki at that point makes her not care. She tells kaneki she knows when they are 14. It is a messy tear filled night for Kaneki.

Surprisingly, Kaneki is the one the confess her romantic feelings to Hide when they are 17. Kaneki can barely finish her confession before Hide is all over her, basically in tears over the fact that they both feel the same.

And the rest is a bit the same as cannon. They both go to Kamii, except they share a cute little apartment together, and Kaneki still works at Antieku and Hide is a mole of sorts inside the CCG as a intern.

That’s the main gist, but here are some other things in this AU I can think of rn:

Rize is a member of Aogiri and is Kanekis ‘caretaker’ (using that term extremely loosely)

Kaneki and Ryoko have a mother daughter relationship

Ryoko still dies tho, but it’s when Kaneki is 17

Ayato at least starts out living at Antieku with Touka, I might have a big conflict arc between them were he temp goes to Aogiri

Hide does eventually tell Antieku she knows they are all ghouls

Hide and Kimi are besties u can’t convince me otherwise

Oh and Nishki is apart of Antieku a lot younger

Hide in general is like the 20th wards Iocal Okay Human tm amongst the ghouls

Hides biological parents were ghoul investigators and were killed in action, but she has 2 dads she lives very much and they are like Kanekis second family

After Kaneki and Hide enter college the plot is just kinda ma whatever I feel like at the moment?? Like there are multiple plots that could happen but I’m bad at writing so like I can’t settle on one so it’s just like whatever I want it to be atm.

My first impression: “Oh who’s that guy again? Eh I’ll just look him up. Oh hey that one- WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED??” Other than that I basically just didn’t care about him cause I just wanted to get back to Kaneki.

My impression now: I love him so much he’s my little guy he’s so silly I want to run him through a meat grinder he means the world to me he is my world he deserves the world he’s ruined my life and made it better and I love him for it <33

Favourite thing about that character: Assuming I can’t say everything uh I love the irony of his character. Becoming everything you hated. Getting everything you wanted superficially but losing the reasons you wanted it in the first place. All that good stuff.

Least favourite thing: His ending :( “oh he disappeared and was never seen again and fought rogue ghouls as a half-kakuja-“ NO. FUCK NO. AFTER EVERYTHING HES BEEN THROUGH HE IS NOT GETTING THAT SHITTY OF AN ENDING. HE SHOULDNT HAVE TO BE INVOLVED IN THIS BULLSHIT ANYMORE HE SHOULD BE LIVING A NICE PEACEFUL LIFE WITH HIS LOVED ONES.

Favourite line/scene: Uh, god there's a lot to choose from... Honourable mention to his little speech about fear (mainly because it's so funny in context "oh you're scared of me cause I'm different" no I think its because you murdered their coworkers in front of them but go off ig). My favourite probably has to be his internal dialogue during the fight with Amon in the lab raid arc, a ton of great lines in there. But I also love every scene he's in so y'know.

Favourite interaction that character has with another: Probably his fight with Amon during Rushima and then his moment with Akira after. Gives me brainworms.

A character that I wish that character would interact with more: Shikorae! They may have only had one on-screen interaction but they are FRIENDS I swear. Also just the rest of Aogiri in general. I wanna see how this crazed ex-dove fits in with the rest of their organization.

Another character from another fandom that reminds me of that character: Uh... human Takizawa kinda reminds me of Matsuda from Death Note but that's all I've got.

A headcanon about that character: He adores boy band pop but is incredibly embarrassed about it. His sister likes the same bands as him and he always acts annoyed that he's being "forced" to go to concerts with her but he secretly begs her to buy tickets for him too. He has an ARASHI poster in his bedroom. Hide introduced him to Backstreet Boys and they listened to it together sometimes before, well, y'know.

A song that reminds of that character: I’ve got a few but I’m gonna go with The Mind Electric. Idk I think it fits his mental state pretty well and also a lot of lyrics could tie into parts of his character. Also quick shoutout to the Demo 4 version cause the “see how I laugh at you” part reminds me of that one scene with Ayato.

An unpopular opinion about that character: Don't have one really

Another topic I’m interested in regarding post-canon Takizawa is,

How does he feel about our old friend Kaneki?

They appear to be on neutral terms by their last interaction, but in fairness that was during a time when Seidou was at a very obvious…low point. During his fight with Amon just prior, he made it clear that he didn’t value his own life, and even Kaneki mentions that he might “go off and die” if he didn’t have something to ground him, so it’s safe to say that his worldview was a little rocky. I mostly say that because it was even more obvious during their first interaction in the auction arc that Seidou held a sort of grudge against Kaneki, for basically being the reason he was subjected to the ghoulification and torture in the first place. There’s a caveat to THAT too though– opposite of the blasé, depressed Seidou we see at the end of :re, auction arc Seidou was still high off the brainwashing and manipulation of Aogiri, not really thinking clearly for himself!

SO, all that to say, in a world where Seidou is neither manic and bloodthirsty OR hopeless and lacking an identity, how does he feel about Kaneki?

Still rereading TG and kinda in love with the momentum of this whole scene, as well as its symbolic. 

You see, Shuu boasts about ghouls not really “fighting” or being able to win unless they take their kagune out, but he actually gets stopped by three ghouls who fight him in three different ways: 

Kaneki agrees to get bitten 

so that Touka can get her kagune out as shit gets insanely real

And Nishiki intervenes as a living shield to stop Shuu from eating Kimi

But also, it’s because Touka gets her kagune out to fight him that Kimi ends up seeing her true form as a ghoul, leading to another very meaningful scene of the series...

So overall, these scenes actually serve to depict the kagune as a definite part of ghoul aesthetic rather than reducing it to just being a fighting weapon, as some ghouls like Shuu, or Touka in that scene (or even the CCG with quinque weapons), seem to believe. 

What’s even funnier is that in the Aogiri arc, Shuu makes a similar comment to Uta who’s fighting bare-handed, because he wants to see what kind of kagune Uta has and...

...Uta’s also like “nah, kagune aren’t about fighting”. xDDD 

TL;DR even before :Re and the idea of a human/ghoul possible coexistence, Ishida-sensei was already introducing the concept for both ghouls and CCG to stop seeing ghouls’ kagune only as a weapon possibility.

EVERYTHING THAT'S WRONG WITH TOKYO GHOUL

where I just bitch about Ishida's choices and decisions.

First things first: to me manga kinda went shit after Arima's death. Like I honestly thought the whole One-eyed King thing could be played off nicely and that Eto and Arima will give Kaneki something to work with. But yeah... nevermind, he had to handle everything himself.

Now let's review some of the problematic points in the story:

- The whole island 'extermination of Aogiri Tree' operation. It honestly seemed like the Aogiri Tree which was feared by the CCG for the rest of the manga just fell apart like a house of cards. Why did Tsukiyama and other 20th ward ghouls appeared there to help them in the first place? Like, that turn of events was never clarified. 

- Touka's character in :re. Fuck you, Ishida. She wasn't my favorite in the first book, but I acknowledged her strength, her violent tendencies due to her childhood trauma and her desire to do better. And in :re all of a sudden she becomes this soft girl with a beautiful smile which does not appear in most of it and only enters again when Ishida decides that he has to force some romantic line for the main character. There is zero chemistry between Kaneki and Touka throughout the entire manga. It is pretty obvious from the start that Ishida wanted them to have some kind of romance, but he never followed through. Like, they don't see each other after Owl Eradication Op and then within a couple of chapters in :re they go from renewed friends to lovers to having a child and getting married? Nobody can convince that this is any kind of slowburn. That's a forced lazy arc. Besides... A CHILD???? "Fucckkking kidding". You are in the middle of the biggest crisis that ghoul society has ever faced. The ghouls rescued by the Goat are starving, Tokyo is filled with Furuta's Oggai army. Kaneki is traumatized (as always), overwhelmed with responsibility and trying his best to be the man that Arima believed him to be. SO YEAH, A PERFECT TIMING TO HAVE A CHILD. And there is not one panel where Kaneki questions if it is worth to bring a new life to this fucked up world. Yeah, Ishida, fuck you.  

Okay, now I know some of you will think that I just don't like a straight ship. So let's get it out of the way straight away:

- Kaneki didn't need a romantic line. At least it should have never gotten to the point of marriage and kids. It should have been a romantic interest at most. I hate the ending of the Hunger Games for the same reason. Katniss Everdeen having a bunch of kids and being a happy mom? Yeah, fuck that. - The only valid romantic line in this manga is Amon/Akira. They must be protected at all cost. And of course Ishida does not even bother to show them in the last chapter, lol. - I don't ship Kaneki with Hide. Their friendship is precious, and it makes me sad that people can't be friends without being romantisized (Johnlock stans, I am talking to you). - Shuneki. That's a tough one because I believe that Tsukiyama at some point did develop feelings towards Kaneki, but let's be honest it's not mutual.

Which brings me to the next point:

- TSUKIYAMA WAS DONE DIRTY. He deserved THE WORLD. I can't even find words to describe how unfair his character was treated. In the first book when he is first introduced his character is pretty flat. Yeah, he has charm, he's problematic and obsessive, and randomly inserts French words into the conversation. I know many people liked him even at that point, but let's face it: his character gains his true depth and meaning in :re. After everything we learn about his family and his relationship with Karren, Chie and the servants I don't know how can anyone not love him. The influence Kaneki's death has on his character development is enormous. First of all, it was such a strong moment when he decides that it is not his place to bring Kaneki's memory back? You can see how much struggle was there in his head. He recognized that he could have been wrong in the past, that Haise might be happier than Kaneki, and also he puts his family above his desires. Imagine: we went from Shu trying to have Kaneki to himself no matter the cost to Shu thinking that Kaneki is better off being Haise so that he doesn't learn about all the suffering and loss he went through. THIS WAS SO GOOD.

Now, the fact that even after regaining his memory Kaneki throws him off the roof is a bit controversial but understandable. After all, they weren't on the best terms, Ken didn't completely trust him in the past. Moreover, he never got to learn how much Shu suffered and how much he grew emotionally. And last but not least, I like to believe that he really hoped that Shu will survive the fall. I still see this part as a bit problematic because Kaneki would literally die for any member of the squad before, but at the same time I just feel sorry that he got himself in this situation in the first place. Being confused, not having his memories, wondering whether he should hold on to being an investigator - that was too much.

Okay, I got a little carried away. This is all great, but my point in this was how Tsukiyama was treated later when he was part of the Goat. Like the man literally forgave you, never doubted you once, did everything you expected of him and more and Kaneki never thanked him once. NOT ONCE. They never even had a conversation which concerned anything outside their goal. It honestly looked like Kaneki finally realized he can trust Shu with his life, so he just used him. This was so painful to watch. Ken literally never recognized how big of a part Tsukiyama played in him being the One-eyed King. This just makes me angry. And also Shu's non-existent reaction to Kaneki being married to Touka????

I don't even know what to say about Ishida creating that panel with Tsukiyama saying he just wishes to see Ken happy JUST TO END IT WITH A SICK COMMENT ABOUT TASTING THEIR CHILD???!??!?!? Ishida, why?

To summarize: Tsukiyama is a beautiful precious flower who did not deserve to be Kaneki's unappreciated errand boy. My soul was aching everytime he adressed him as "My King".

That's all I have to say in this post. This fandom is probably dead anyways, but I felt like screaming into the void.

Oh man chapter 62 hits different when you read Tokyo Ghoul Past right before it

Kaneki tells this to Rize...

and its pretty clear to the audience that his aunt was lying the whole time, just sleazing money off her sister

and it seems like Kaneki was unaware of it, or at least in heavy denial

But he wasn't.

Because in TG Past, when Kaneki's 15, he directly realizes this...

We even get to see that two-story home in Ch 62

Matsumae oneshot; basically moments from her first days taking care of Shuu up to the Tsukiyama Extermination Arc

AU where Furuta escapes the Sunlit Garden with Rize. Maybe a fix-it fic?? I don't really know how I want it to end

Role-reversal AU where some humans are ghouls and vice versa, and where a lot of characters have completely different roles than their canon counterparts

Demon Slayer role-reversal AU where Gyutaro and Ume are the protags ( the only non-tg fic I'm working on)

Also, ideas that I don't have anything written down for but the brainworms are there anyway:

Chainsaw Man and TG crossover - AU where devils also exist in TG. Ghouls are still considered are a threat, but are kinda the least of everyone's worries since there are devils running around too, which is a thousand times worse.

Something to do with the hybrid devils before Fujimoto brings them back. Maybe a Miri Sugo centric fic or something.

Pre-Aogiri AU where Shuu tries to work at Anteiku to try to get closer to Kuroneki in order to eat him. Goes about as well as you'd expect. Maybe a Nothing Too Bad Happens AU? Kind of inspired by a fanart I saw of Shuu wearing the Anteiku waiter uniforms.

that said, this is not owl of you. this is a root a divergence fic. very different.

set during the 6 month timeskip of the original, after kaneki joins aogiri to kill the oek from the inside.

aogiri cleaning out the ghoul restaurants and securing power in each ward after the fact. digging into how they police the feeding habits of their members via a dove-only diet (or suicide victims; meat is meat, after all)

tatara being suspicious of kaneki's intentions within aogiri (he is definitely not jealous of the New Guy) (but also he's kinda right)

eto homeschooling hinami (it's cute ok)

kaneki reclaims his empathy, and eto learns from his kindness. a mutual healing process ("ipsen this is the second time you've talked about a canon divergence etoken mutual healing process fic" and i'll fucking doing a third time now shut up)

definitely not already working on this nope

alternative dragon arc

third time etoken mutual healing process fic btw

in which kaneki's dragon kagune completely disappears once he's cut out of it (so no dragon orphans), but at the cost of most of his loved ones (anteiku squad, touka, etc.)

also furuta gets eaten by him bc he should have done that and idk why he wasn't eaten at that point. need to really hammer in the sort of indiscriminate slaughterhouse monster the dragon kakuja was; a real "everyone loses" kind of moment

some people live. like hinami. i would never kill hinami

the V and clown stuff from canon take place while he’s being excavated. this is mainly so that eto gets free.

the fic takes place some time after the fighting settles down, and people are trying to piece their lives back together.

kaneki is a huge source of controversy, and to placate the public so they can all focus on rebuilding, he's placed in cochlea again, where he meets eto again, who has lost her memories.

I was gonna draw a whole lot more but this one sketch took up all my energy anyway (warning for incoherent rambling) ;w;

He’s swapped with Amon in this au so he’s a few years older and a decent bit more experienced when it comes to fighting ghouls (still has that inferiority complex though)

I didn’t colour in the sketch but I’d imagine his coat would be like a really dark navy and his suit and tie would be a lighter blue (closer to canon)

His hair’s a bit longer than canon and post-Aogiri arc he’d start tying it up :>

I think his actual story would stay pretty close to Amon’s just with his personality and stuff being different

Anyway :re would not be very fun for him but it’s even less fun for his canon counterpart so at least there’s that

Also after getting ghoulified he has a bikaku kagune for plot reasons 👍
