An (Albeit Late) Writeblr Intro

I'm seeing all the Writeblr introduction posts going around and I'm starting to realize that, damn, I should have started my blog that way. But I didn't, so I might as well post my intro a while after I've written and reblogged other things, because it's the least I can do.

So, with that out of the way: excuse my fuck-ups, and here's a really late Writeblr intro…

Hi! I don't think anyone wants to type out my long username whenever they're referring to me, so just call me 'A.' (He/him). I've been lurking on Tumblr for a while and I figured I'd actually get up and make a blog for writing. I don't exactly have any particular focus outside of just "random crap that relates to writing in any way, shape, or form" so I could be putting up memes, drabbles I wrote, excerpts from my WIPs, writing memes, etc. etc. I'll make other blogs if I wanna focus in on one specific writing aspect later, but for now, I'm keeping things general. 

My current major WIP as of now is APS (stands for 'A Powerful Secret' but I usually just call it the acronym since it sounds cooler). It's a sci-fi dystopia trilogy centering around the idea of superhumans being discovered by an already-corrupt government. There's also a spinoff I want to work on, but that's way off into the future. I'm currently working on B2 of the trilogy; it's currently in the first draft. Considering that this series is still a major work-in-progress, I might not be able to post anything about it until a bit later.

I do have plenty of other side projects that I most certainly want to share on here, since I feel more confident posting those first (when I get back to writing them, of course). Some of these side-WIPs include: 

The Devil On My Shoulder: A fiction centering around a depressed college-aged student, and how his life changes when a demon is kicked out from hell and comes crashing right into his home. 

This is probably the story I'm most excited to work on, given that I've mapped out all the twists and turns in my head already, and all I need to do is write it.

ATM (placeholder title): A story — possibly a series — revolving around a civilization that relies heavily on elemental magic which takes the form of specific jewelry (ex: elemental rings, necklaces, wristbands, etc.). It's often used to fight back against the monsters that invaded the world decades ago. The source of the creatures is something that nobody knows, but the protagonist, Nadeline, is dead set on finding out. 

This story may take a longer while to write, considering that it's a high-fantasy type of story, which is a genre I don't write often but want to write more of.

Don't Leave: (That may or may not be a placeholder title; it depends). A novel that focuses on the town of Bayholde, which forbids anyone from traveling outside of it and has closed itself off from the world almost entirely. Kaguya, a young man who is fed up with being trapped inside, makes his escape from Bayholde one night just to see what lies in the outside world. What he finds is most certainly not pretty.

You can bet I'll be posting at least something related to the first or third WIP sometime soon. In the meantime, though, I'll probably fill up the blog with all the other things I mentioned before: drabbles, excerpts, memes, maybe the occasional writing prompt/idea if I feel like it.

Very interesting ranking. I'm rather perplexed by Sleet and Camilla's placement given that their regular civilians. And Willow as well to a lesser degree. I could see them developing their Aura levels to such a degree to prevent assassination attempts given their status as council people but if that was the reasoning then Jacques would probably be up there also and yet he isn't. I definitely feel like Ciel, Cordovin, Lil Miss Malachite and Ghira should be a tier higher at the very least. Possibly the Ship Captain as well? People that regularly deal with Grimm, other criminals and people that try to hurt them for their Faunus heritage should logically train their Auras levels. Likewise, I think Jaune should be higher given that he has in Pyrrha's words "a lot of it" and him being a damage sponge is kind of his niche. Somewhere around Sienna's placement. What's the reasoning for Weiss and Yang's placements? Do they become Maidens and inherit Winter and Raven's powers, respectively?

So I'm making Camilla and Sleet veteran Huntsmen in this AU because I never understood how regular civilans could get to their position in the land of Renment. Like, Atlas is supposed to be this "fascist dictatorship" (it's not), but the Atlas military seems pretty unimportant in the actual government outside of Ironwood having two council seats. Like, that's it? He should have way more power with what the story was trying to do (then again he could kill both of them and get away with it so I guess he did have the power and these two were just puppets maybe?)

Willow took lessons from her Dad when she was younger, but she was never serious about it. As for Jacques, I'm giving him a completely overpowered passive semblance that makes him one of the most dangerous "civilians" here. He can hax legendary huntsmen level of broken.

I honestly don't know what to do with Ciel, so I kinda just threw her down there. Ghira being down there is just me memeing because in this AU, he got assassinated before the story began. I could just straight up write him to be weaker than canon, but honestly, that doesn't matter much either way. Cordovin has a little grandma health bar lol, but you are right in that she (and everyone else in the Atlas military) should be around master huntsmen level because I made Aura more accessible this time around. Malachite is a meme and so is Ship captian.

As for Jaune, I plan to swap his and Pyrrha's roles in the story (Jaune dies fighting Cinder, Pyrrha lives in to avenge him). In the early volumes, all the students have Aura levels at the low Huntsmen range and they only get higher as time goes on. In other words, Pyrrha starts the story at about 2500 AP while Jaune starts at 3000 AP. If Jaune followed the same path that he did in vanilla RWBY, then he would be chilling in the raid boss tier along with Pyrrha and Sun.

Finnaly, I do plan for Weiss and Yang to become the Winter and summer maidens at the end of the au. Because I plan for Penny to stay dead after V3, Winter gets the maiden powers as intended and then gets killed by Cinder in V8, only for the power to go to Weiss. Then in V10, Yang should become the Summer maiden (maybe as a sacrifice so some other character dosen't have to do it).

La squadra as class mates?

I'm going to assume you're talking about American high school because I'm not familiar with other forms of similar educations around the world. AU where La Squadra are a group of friends at Passione High School lmao.

Sorbet and Gelato are the school’s confirmed couples that are just openly affectionate to the point where it’s kinda cringey but they don’t care. Both of them are on the student planning committee and have a knack for planning the best homecoming dances, proms, senior getaways, etc. while not going over budget. Sorbet is a math whiz and taking AP math classes and is a member of the math-lete’s competition club. Gelato, however, can't do math for shit, but knows how to run side-businesses on school grounds. The two are unstoppable with running wacky schemes throughout the year like barber shops in the boy's bathroom, cut fruit stands during practices, or running black markets on exam papers. The reason why Pesci’s known as a baker is because Sorbet and Gelato once ran an illegal bake sale and helped Pesci set up a little online shop using the money they make on campus. School authorities can't stop them no matter what. Every time they try to shut down something, Sorbet and Gelato manage to kill it before any punishment can be dished out or bribe the right people to help get off scott-free. This is how they're able to plan the best school events without going over budget. Whatever they have over budget is paid for by their hustles so it ends up being under budget but they pretend they “recalculated” everything and it works out. Plus, that money also goes into their personal use too, so they’re the ones with the best clothes and foods that they bought on their own. 

Formaggio is your typical himbo jock that doubles as the occasional class clown. He's actually in various sports depending on what season it is but he's mostly known for being a football linebacker and track team as a sprinter. He’s hoping to be quarterback someday. Everyone's at first intimidated because he's a jock but turns out he's the nicest, funniest dude ever. Teachers don't mind him cracking a joke or two because he makes sure to not cross a line or make it a big distraction, although there were a few hard-asses that don’t appreciate it as much every now and then. Classes are hard for him to excel in so he’s more of a Bs and Cs guy but people are willing to help him out because he’s the person that brings the best snacks and drinks to study sessions and genuinely does his best to pull his weight regardless. He's not good at research or planning when it comes to group projects but he can make a mean powerpoint presentation that's readable yet full of funny memes and jokes. He's the guy that helps carry chairs around and walk you to your car after practice because it's late at night and he noticed you're a bit scared to walk out by yourself. He's the one that actually fights the bullies instead of being a bully. He’s hoping to get a sports scholarship so he can go to college and study without worrying about whether his grades will make or break his admission. 

Ghiaccio started out wanting to join track and cross-country team but got injured and had to sit before he could try out the first season. While recovering, he discovered a new passion that replaced his initial choice for extracurriculars: marching band. While he took band class in middle school, he stopped when he was in high school to get into sports, but then quickly got back into music when he was offered to be part of the school marching band. He started out with the drumline on snare but managed to get himself to become the band’s drum major. He yells at everyone for not being on time and not taking things seriously or not learning the routine quick enough. This kid used to vent his stress with running and now he's venting it on the other band kids. Everyone hates it but they respect Ghiaccio because he's also quick to bring everyone back in timing and can troubleshoot where timing was off and how to fix it. Outside of marching band, he excels in AP Language and foreign language classes, sometimes arguing with other students for not using proper grammar. Surprisingly, he is bad at AP Literature because he wasn’t able to understand the use of motifs and symbolisms to convey themes and hated that class as a result; it’s the only class he got a 2/5 for AP scores in. He tried to be on the debate team but they kicked him out for... obvious reasons.

Prosciutto is one of those students that don’t really fit into any clique but is rather popular because of this. Appearance-wise, he looks like a preppy-Daddy’s money kind of guy but that’s really all just appearance. He mostly dresses like that because he’s on the history trivia team and is the captain and officer of the debate and chess team respectively, so those things require him to dress up and look somewhat nice. He’s a TA for some classes because no other electives interest him and he doesn’t mind using his spare time to help grade papers, do his homework, or just listen in on the lesson for the day. What’s on his mind is getting into an Ivy League and eventually a Law school, so he’s keeping himself busy with both academics and extracurriculars and trying to diversify himself in order to stand out- another reason why he dresses the way he does. He does like the AP history classes and really likes both AP macro and micro-economics. That doesn’t mean he’s goody two shoes though; you can find him smoking with a few other students behind the gym or help plan house parties that have the right amount of booze to keep goers entertained but can easily hide or rid of if the cops come to shut the party down. 

Risotto is one of those goth kids that everyone is intimidated of and his height also contributes to that. He and a few other students, like Abbacchio and Carne to name a few, ended up creating a metal/prog rock band that occasionally plays at school or local community events. Surprisingly, they're quite versatile in terms of musical genres, so they can easily play anything if they’re paid for it: top 40 hits at weddings, live entertainment for middle school fundraisers, vintage tunes at retirement homes, metal shreds at late night bars they managed to get gigs at with fake IDs. He and his band make regular uploads on SoundCloud of their recent riffs and covers; they’re hoping to get some sort of record deal to make their first album so they can be musicians full-time after high school. Other than that, Risotto mostly keeps to himself and doesn't really get involved in extracurricular activities or have any favorite classes that he excels in. You might see him occasionally joining in on stuff, like being a lead for a musical or helping out to volunteer for some credits. No one but Formaggio knows this but he’s also the person underneath the school mascot; it started out as punishment for getting caught sneaking out of class once to see a concert but he started volunteering to do it more often lets him be a bit silly under anonymity.

Illuso is a theatre kid and also an officer of the Journalism club. Think Sharpay Evans level where he thinks he’s the best but also wiling to help other students shine on stage too with a sprinkle of inflated ego. He's in every play, musical, etc and tells everyone he's going to get out of this "small town" once he graduates and will make it big in Broadway one day. Other than living and breathing theatre both at his school and at local productions, he’s pretty average in his classes and does help Sorbet and Gelato with their school event plannings every now and then in terms of decorations and coming up with some sort of theme. As part of journalism club, he helps oversees the stories coming in and once had an unofficial “investigative journalism” department. It had to be shut down he was close to expose a teacher for some sketchy stuff and a Twitter account that goes by the name “passione-rumors” began to rise in popularity among students. That last part ultimately made the department useless because whoever was running the account had no limit or boundary to what they can post. Before Illuso graduates,one of his goals is to find out who’s running that Twitter account. Not because rumors the account spreads are bad and intice bullying but because how dare someone spills tea better than he does investigative journalism. 

Melone is a fucking nerd that knows his way around social media. How he managed to juggle AP Biology, AP Computer Science and his other classes as well as his personal life- only he and God knows. He tried to make a Robotics club but it fell off because there wasn't much interest in it but he's active in a bunch of volunteer work for medical-career based clubs as a means to get his volunteer credits. Everyone always says he's on his computer to continue studying or find ways to get free scholarships for university tuition, but he's actually spending his time on Twitter and Tumblr running is successful, anonymous fan accounts about his favorite K-pop groups as well as other fandoms. He's a master at keeping up to date with fandom news and is responsible for a few viral photos he took himself for the fandoms he is a part of. He's got a shopify store selling merchandises of the memes that came out of those accounts. No one knows that it’s him running these things though. If only Illuso knew that the one who runs the “passione-rumors” twitter account was Melone all this time. He really is irl Gossip Girl/Whistledown, although he makes sure to not gossip about his friends and occasionally make gossip about himself so he wouldn’t be suspicious. All those rumors about him liking feet and having a fetish for them- that was just a lie he tweeted about himself to avoid getting caught. 

Pesci excels in vocational classes. He just loves taking them: woodworking, home-economics, etc. He loves to share his creations with his friends and classes. Sorbet and Gelato helped him set up a bakery delivery service thanks to their school schemes in exchange for helping them plan the catering for the school events. That bakery service is still growing and starting to serve as catering for events like microweddings and birthdays. While he’s good with science classes, especially biology, he’s too scared to try out any AP classes despite his teachers suggesting he at least takes a class. In terms of extracurricular activities, he’s club president of the fishing club and aquatic animal appreciation club- both of which he founded. Despite the club being for those into those interests, a lot of people like joining because Pesci uses that time to share his baked goods and both clubs have planned and organized really fun events like aquarium visits and whale watching ferry rides. A big part of why Pesci is able to do these events comes from Sorbet and Gelato helping fund these trips but Pesci isn’t complaining. He’s just glad that there are people who seem to be just as interested in fishes as he is. It also helps that some of the members are also willing to pitch in as a sort of payment for eating Pesci’s pastries.

For starters, I have no idea what I'm doing. This blog is a direct result of peer pressure. There will be a lot of miscellaneous things on here, as I don't have the will or energy to run multiple pages. To the best of my ability, I will tag everything accordingly. I can say with certainty that this blog will definitely contain langblr/studyblr content, including study resources/tips, motivational posts, memes, etc. Beyond that... idk. This upcoming summer I will be spending 12 weeks in Peru for a medical internship, with the primary goal to improve my Spanish as much as possible. Documenting this experience is the reason why I started this blog (I'll also be posting a bunch of other stuff too, so head to the #12weekstofluency tag if that's what you're here for). 

However, at the time of this blog's creation, I'm still about 5 months out from my departure date.  I plan to use this time figure out how I would like to keep this blog organized, and how I'd like to structure my future Peru posts  (advice/ideas on this would be deeply appreciated).

I started learning Spanish in the 8th grade so I could get it out of the way early for my high school graduation requirement. I didn't really learn to love it until I continued learning it in high school. My Spanish abilities were at their best when I was taking AP Spanish in 2019. I estimate my level then was around B2. I slacked on my Spanish once I wasn't in school for it anymore, and as the years have passed I've brushed up here and there, but haven't committed to regular studying. Now, I estimate myself to be around a B1, with my speaking skills having weakened the most of all. My upcoming Peru trip is an attempt to break out of my 4-year-long Spanish-learning purgatory plateau. I am immensely lucky to have the time and resources to do so, and I refuse to squander the opportunity. This blog will keep me accountable.

Final Disclaimer: At the time of this post, I am approaching finals week, then the holidays, and then will be starting a new semester, EMT-B night school, and continuing working in nutrition research. I also have a lot to prepare for the trip too. In other words... don't expect a lot of content for the time being.

Tina joined choir freshman year but was very self-conscious about it, so she forced Meowscles (his human name is Maxwell because it starts with M and i’m uncreative) to join with her. Turns out he’s a really good bass and he LOVES being on the stage, so he forces her into all these duets to get her to loosen up.

Skye and Tina practically live at each other’s houses. They’re always at one or the other after school and have sleepovers every weekend, where they watch movies and play video games all day/night. To each other, Tina is the cool junior and Skye is the cool freshman

Despite being one of the peacemakers/death preventers (the other being Brutus), Tina and Max have gotten very good at convincing Maya to join them on their not-so-very-safe shenanigans

Brutus, Max, and Maya have specific days they go to the gym together after school.

Brutus is always the one to drive, mostly because he’s the safest and quietest option. Maya doesn’t drive, Tina would be 20mph above the speed limit, Max turns the ride into a karaoke session (where he sings off-key on purpose), and Midas simply likes being a rider.

teachers [in the us] are absolutely underpaid, tasked with extraordinarily unrealistic expectations/responsibilities and expected to perform miracles out of nothing HOWEVERRRR the amount of teachers who see themselves as the primary victims of this whole decrepit schooling system and subsequently place their students—the people with literally no autonomy coupled with the legal requirement to attend school and who they quite literally occupy a role of explicit power over—as the culprits as opposed to the one million other factors which are making their job miserable and impossible is infuriating and always always always primarily directed at students of color and kids w/ learning disabilities etc. you are all in this together and if i see one more teacher blaming “””bad parenting”””””” for the problems they face in their work i’m going to Go Ape. you are literally “no, it’s the children who are wrong” meme

BART TEACHER FACTS. he's a computer programming/compsci teacher right. (he might even teach AP bc it really seems like that class requires zero credentials to teach?? 😭😭)

anyway he makes his students handwrite their code most of the time. yeah. and everybody hates him for it.

but he makes up for it by being the Cool Teacher. my man is funny and nice as hell. he's always getting in trouble w admin bc of how unserious he is. no one knows how he still works here bc he's always on thin ice.

his classroom is super cozy. he's got a couch in there. string lights across the ceiling. some really outdated meme posters bc he's trying to be hip with the kids.

Your reading of Moby Dick has flung me straight back into AP English in high school where I had to read it, and bringing back vivid memories of my teacher who was wholly obsessed with it (still is, I’m friends with him on Facebook and he still talks about this book, even makes a yearly pilgrimage to Martha’s Vineyard to do whale watching). I remember me and all the other baby queers who hadn’t come out yet were like “does Mr. R wanna fuck a whale? Does he know. Does he knows how homoerotic this book is. Who picks Moby Dick as their favorite book. Why is he so oblivious to how much Melville wants to fuck this whale. Is this book the reason he became a deacon in the Catholic diocese. God how long is this book. Oh god another chapter about whale biology. Is the whale a metaphor for queerness oh god now I’m thinking critically about this.” Your reading of it is also making me want to reread it specifically to write a paper and send it to Mr. R lmao

Alright beebros, I've made it out of the s1 recap and we're now in the lazy in space arc. Howell is already trying hard to become Best Character.

Also, I've been thinking a lot today about the pandemic -- I've been realizing more and more that my students got hit with the panorama right in the middle of high school, when junior and senior year (at least for me) really escalated things and kind of helped me transition into college. The AP teachers really pushed us to take as many classes as possible, including usually up our study halls so we'd be taking 8 a semester instead of 7. I dunno how I would have handled that over Zoom. Plus all these articles coming out about decades of learning gains being completely wiped by the pandemic.

So I think I need to switch gears a little bit and use this unit to introduce more organizational/stress-management tools for them. Which is a complete meme considering I'm not organized pretty much at all.

So here's my least favorite thing about kids. But first, background.

At work for the last week or so, some of the high schoolers have taken to loudly, and apropos of nothing, telling one another to "Keep Yourself Safe." It was not hard to suss out what all the winking and nudging was about, especially since some of them were helpful enough to abbreviate it to KYS when whoever they were talking to didn't immediately get it.

Now, I am very tired, and suffering from the worst pollen allergies of my life, and there is one week to go until I will likely not see any of these children ever again. I don't make a point of policing the idiotic jokes my students make unless it crosses a bright red line. But the fact of the matter is that the subject of suicide has, for many years, filled me with a profound personal sorrow. I know and have known too many people who have died, or whose lives have been scarred, by suicide or suicide attempts. I myself have experienced persistent suicidal ideation that I have succeeded in reducing, but that can never really go away.

I take the subject seriously. I make allowances for teenagers in my dealings with them because they are stupid and impulsive, and they tend to believe that anything that makes them laugh cannot be bad for any reason, but my deeply held opinion is that any person who casually utters the words "kill yourself" to another human being is being an asshole. Even doing it in a juvenile, transparent code, for no real reason except to make themselves laugh or seem edgy, is thoughtless asshole behavior.

So in my advisory period today, when two kids decided to pingpong "Keep Yourself Safe" at each other ad nauseum, I had enough, and I calmly told them to knock it off, because it wasn't funny.

Now we get to my least favorite thing about kids.

The entire point of "Keep Yourself Safe" is plausible deniability. They know their teachers would have a problem with kids telling each other to kill themselves, and they know why: because it's an incredibly fucked up thing to say to a person. But they'd like to keep doing it anyway, because it made them laugh and now it's a meme, and teenagers have no imperative except aping what every other teen is aping.

So one of these kids decided to put on the straightest face they could muster, and ask why I was so bothered by what they were doing, because they were only telling each other to keep themselves safe, and there's nothing wrong with that, and it's actually a good thing to say to some one. There was no wink, there was no smirk. I was being asked to accept this defense at face value.

I replied, with direct sincerity, that it was disingenous to pretend that the phrase didn't mean anything else, or that they didn't know that it meant anything else, and that they ought to be more considerate of the effect their words have on the people around them - not just the people they were speaking to. The conversation ended with that. Later, as they were leaving the room, I heard the other kid, the one who hadn't looked me in the eye and told me that I was being irrational, tell a third kid "Keep Yourself Safe."

Earlier I said teenagers are stupid, but that is only in the sense that they have little knowledge of life and they can't think about anything but themselves. They are also very intelligent, and frankly that makes it worse when they do shit like this.

Last year, a professor of mine gave extra credit to students who made memes about the class material.

If I remember correctly the Desmond guy was a researcher trying to prove some sexist myths about human sexuality by comparing it to that of apes. I’m pretty sure he actually did use the word “sexy” to describe an ape in his research. It was wild.
