What made you ship it?

This is a good question. To be honest, from the very first fight they had I thought they were really cool; but didn't quite understand the parallels between them or the nuances to their rivalry (I even initially came into Fate by mistaking Cu and Archer for Tohsaka Rin's parallel boyfriends...yes I used to think Cu and Archer were 2 versions of the same guy from different timelines). But one thing that struck me was the symbolism of Cu's spear that pierced the heart, and Rin's Pendant, that brought Emiya back to life...and somehow gave the two guys a rematch as servants within the same timeline that he dies as a teenage guy... (I am confused now XD)

To understand the rivalry between them a little better, I read many posts online and I just love how they interact! The way how they clash over ideals concerning heroism, how Archer goes full sass mode (and stops holding back) whenever he hangs out with Cu; and overall...it is always a joy to watch these two interact. (And being obsessed with both of them helps!)

2. What are your favourite things about the ship?

EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!! Actually, I am not sure. Maybe their battles and banter. I love how Archer goes out of his way to compliment Cu during the heat of battle, and how he gets under his skin; I greatly enjoy watching the sparks fly between them. In other words, it's all about the inherent eroticism of battle for me. Also the whole red/blue, fated rivals, bi4bi etc etc stuff surrounding them...even their outfits look a bit similar. And there is something EPIC AF about how if one of them is in a holy grail war, the other will be bound to follow soon (most of the time).

3. Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

There are probably many, yes... But there have been things I've misunderstood about Yariyumi as well. I do think the biggest unpopular opinion would just be me believing that actually, these two guys do not hate one another in canon, and get along incredibly well (this can sometimes be a hotly debated facet of the Archer/Lancer debacle). The other things that come to mind was ancient tumblr discourse on who would top and bottom, I personally think I don't mind either way.

Also this may be a super unpopular opinion, but sometimes I wonder if Archer purposely seeks Lancer's attention at times (like when in HA he goes out of his way to acquire a higher quality fishing rod than Lancer, and gloat about his superiority the entire time; even challenging him to a fishing match). I dunno, it just feels to me like Archer has a strong admiration for this guy- probably a mutual one as well, with how Lancer gets frustrated that a bowman as skilled as Archer is completely lacking in a sense of pride.

Anime Update V3 1

Vinland Saga S2 - The original OP and ED singers came back for the new OP and ED, so you know shit's going to get real. But not quite at this episode, where things are kept laid back and focused on the cast back at Ketil's farm, with the underlining drama coming from a slave from some other farm who's now on the loose. And that guy shows up at the end, declaring himself to be Arnheid's husband!

Hunter x Hunter - Upon landing in East Gorteau, Gon and Killua split up and Gon finds himself in a fight with the Ant Army's own Scowl and Batso all while Meleoron observes the fight undetected. On the side there was some political talk about high ranking Hunters who have interest in exploiting the conflict with the Ants as means of unseating Netero as Chairman, and I love how the dictator of East Gorteau who declares martial law towards the end is simply named "Diego", with no last name given, and is publicly recognized as such.

SHUFFLE! - A couple minutes into the premiere, I wasn't sure this show was working for me. Aside from good dubover voice acting from the likes of Jerry Jewell and Carrie Savage, and a really good joke involving the "KKK" group ("not the mean guys in the white sheets!"), it was so typical high school romcom/harem anime/VN in a way that could get wince-inducing. Then, out of fucking nowhere, it's established that this a world where gods and demons just...exist and intermingle with humans in a society that's interlinked with the divine spiritual realm ever since it opened up on Earth. They just drop it in so casually, and then introducing two new girls leads to the next big reveal for the ongoing premise: the King of Gods and King of Devils have chosen this one guy to be wed to one of their daughters, so he has the choice whether he wants to become the next King of Gods or the next King of Devils depending on who he marries. What!? Oh, and the girls are neighbors to this guy and his pseudo-sister 'cause of course, gotta have that set-up! So now this is looking like fun!

Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works - Two straight episodes where it was hard for me to look away for even a second, as what was transpiring was just so interesting. I remember this part from the movie, where Shinji holds Rin captive, Kirei reveals he's still alive and was Lancer's master all along, and that he killed Rin's father in the previous Holy Grail War. He makes Lancer kill himself, but he doesn't die until after killing Kirei and scaring Shinji away. As this feels like a proper sequel to Fate Zero, it feels good to see Kirei finally bite the dust after his murder of Tokiomi is paid off, but a bit strange that there's no such payoff for his animosity with Kiritsugu, as him being his killer will not be revealed here: Shirou will never know. Speaking of, despite his valiant effort, Shirou gets the crap beaten out of him by Archer, all while getting to see into his head and learn his backstory, where all of his heroic ideals ultimately led him. Archer's very existence challenges Shirou every bit as Archer's words rebuking his beliefs in purity and justice do, and it's ironically helping Shirou grow as a person. He accepts Archer as his "Bad End" that he will strive to avoid, for even if Archer is right about everything, Shirou would rather be wrong but true to himself and what his experience with Kiritsugu taught him to believe in than right but jaded and detached from any sort of bonds with the people most precious to him and the rest of humanity. And so the fight goes on!

KonoSuba - Again, they had me in the first half, not gonna lie. I knew this was a comedic, subversive lampooning of the Isekai subgenre (which needs to be trashed and incinerated already) as oppposed to the more seriously deconstructive and thematically rich Re:ZERO, but the MC starts out seeming just like Subaru Natsuki: a gamer geek, a shut-in NEET, kind of a dingus with a swell-headed attitude at times, he's even wearing a fucking track suit! And he dies in the cliche "jumping in the way of an oncoming vehicle to save a kid" way, except it turns out to have been meaningless since the vehicle in question was a slow moving tractor that would've stopped for the kid anyway. By the time we meet Aqua and get some relentlessly mean-spirited ribbing of Kazuma by her, you start to get a clearer picture of what kind of show this is to be. And Kazuma, just to be a petty bitch, decides to drag Aqua with him to the world he's to live his next life in, much to the goddess' protests and panic attacks. So this new "hero" is a complete cretin and Aqua is a largely useless, self-centered bitch. And together, they are freaking hilarious and their antics have won me over already. Onward to your adventure, you glorious losers!

Symphogear AXZ - Before starting on the final season, I had to see this last one's set of shorts, which were as cute and fun as expected.

Eureka Seven - I've arrived at that part in the show where Renton, on the lam and with nowhere in particular to go, has been unofficially adopted by Charles and Ray, staying aboard their aircraft, assisting them with their LFOs, and eating the delicious food they provide. It's so interesting that these two provide a warmer, more comforting environment to Renton than Gekko State ever did, are even friendlier and more understanding of him, and Charles even looks like he could pass for Renton's dad on top of being an infinitely better, non-abusive father figure than Holland. So there's going to be some drama when Renton finds out these two are under a contract by the Military. And speaking of, Dominic is seen arriving at some abandoned looking site at the episode's closing minute(s). What are you up to now, Dom?

Bedivere x Arturia - Ship it

What made you ship it?

TBH I was one of those few people who shipped it based on that like 2 second scene at the end of FSN. The Camelot Singularity just reinforced it. A lot came from the original Arthurian legend as well. Bedivere is similarly insanely loyal as he is in the game, and like in Fate lore, he’s been with Arthur longer than most.

What are your favorite things about the ship?

He journeyed so far for so long just to see her smile OH MY GOD BRB IM SOBBING HOLY CRAP CAN YOU JUST IMAGINE—

I’m a sucker for intensely loyal knights and I will always be. ALWAYS.

THE ANGST POTENTIALLLLLL but also THE FLUFF POTENTIALLLL

This man loved his king so bloody intensely. So strongly that his desire to see her survived the test of time. To be loved so much, so unconditionally for a thousand and a half years? Gods, that’s just too much, man. ;-;

And I absolutely adore how much it means to him to remain her knight, even if he tends to be insecure about the limb that he lacks, and how he believes he is nothing special in comparison with everyone else. I love that Arturia recognizes his strength and his worth, even if he himself can’t see it.

Irisviel x Arturia - Ship It

What made you ship it?

I think I was bound to the moment I watched Fate Zero. When I was younger it was overshadowed by the feels Diarturia brought and not to mention Kiritsugu and Iri but this ship is damn good on its own.

What sold it though, is the argument she and Kiritsugu have in Episode 16, right after the last Saber and Lancer fight. Irisviel, who we all know loves her husband so much, forced Kiritsugu to answer Saber. That’s just how important Arturia was to her.

What are your favorite things about the ship?

I think they both found in each other something they themselves lack. It’s actually kind of funny. Arturia is human, and yet she’s so heavily consumed by her ideals that she doesn’t act like one. Irisviel, on the other hand, is not human, and yet everything that she does and wants to do is exactly that.

Throughout the anime, Being with Iri puts Saber into such mundane, ordinary situations that it teaches her to live. The suits, the escorting, being a passenger instead of a driver, appreciating the water by the seashore, etc. It's like the woman wants to leave her with some appreciation for the world, especially when she herself doesn’t have all that much time left.

On Irisviel’s part, I think she found in Saber the companionship she would have wanted from Kiritsugu during the last few days she remained on the Earth. Arturia had been the perfect knight in shining armor, taking Irisviel around to see the world as much as they could amidst a war. If they’d just had more time, I have no doubt Arturia would have taken Irisviel even more places, you know?

It makes me sad :( but in a good way.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

I’m pretty sure Irisviel would wear the pants in this relationship ya know what I mean? Hahaha

Much as I love this ship, I think that it becomes all the more valuable because of how it ended. To each other, they were this brief, fleeting feeling of happiness. A love that was so short and yet so strong.

Shirou x Arturia - Don't Ship it

Hooooooo boi. Hear me out, mkay ? But this is just my personal opinion so pls no hate

Why don't you ship it?

I’m gonna start out by saying I don’t think I need to, tbh. Hahaha there’s enough content for this ship being fed to us, so my liking it or not is immaterial. But the reason is well...I watched FSN and Shirou x Saber was...not the best thing about it (the best thing about it was the soundtrack omg iconic) Shirou comes off as a bit of a misogynist, and kind of immature, and the whole time it’s like he doesn’t really listen to Arturia at all. Plus, it’s kind of like he just likes her looks at times. The final deciding factor was the date scene. That was just unbearable.

But then I go online and I see all this good stuff about them. And my friend ships them cause they’re canon, right? So, I’m like okay, what if I judged too quickly, let’s play the VN...and I did. And I still didn’t like him with Saber at all. So, I played the next route, watched the next anime, trying to redeem 1st route Shirou as much as I could but it just....didn’t happen. I think I can safely say I tried to like them. I really did. But no.

What would have made you like it?

Removing the misogyny and the immaturity and letting him listen to her. Like he should have.

At no point in their interactions did it feel like they were standing on equal ground, ever. Either he was speaking over her or the opposite. So less of that and a lot more respect.

And when you compare this relationship to what he has with like with his other two love interests, it makes this ship fall completely flat. It’s pretty...bland and honestly kind of shallow. It’s like the story just tells you they’re in love but there’s no answer to why they’re in love. Make him fall in love with her for her without necessarily forcing his need to save everyone on her.

Despite not shipping it, do you have anything positive to say about it?

I may not like how they got there, but in the end Arturia was able to pass peacefully.

I acknowledge that Shirou was important and made a change in her life.

That ending scene where they meet after so long, NGL is pretty sweet.

A lot of my headcanons happen post-Shirou, so there’s also that.

Archer x Rin -Ship it

What made you ship it?

Tsundere x Cynic has gotta be one of the best dynamics out there.

What are your favorite things about the ship?

His true identity. The fact that she dragged him all the way across space and time to return as her Servant, that’s just bloody fate at work.

The fact that he keeps acknowledging she’s a strong Master despite his later conduct in UBW.

Archer is ridiculously crass and Rin is easily riled up. In the Fifth Holy Grail War, they had the best Master-Servant relationship period. They have this explosive chemistry that just works so well.

When he smiles at her at the end of the route, and you just know that Tohsaka’s gonna be stubborn enough to make sure Shirou doesn’t end up going down the exact same path.

I think it’s sweet that he ends up going along with her whims because he secretly likes housework.

THE PRINCESS CARRY/ CATCH. MAN OH MAN.

Unlike the previous ship mentioned here, these two actually stand on equal ground with each other.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

I don't think it's exactly an unpopular opinion, but I think they really ought to have more official content y'know? Rin is important in every route, and Archer's the actual climax of UBW and also entirely significant across three routes.

Medusa x Sakura - Don't ship it

Why don't you ship it?

Because while journeying through the routes, I always saw Rider as more of a best friend/sort of motherly figure to Sakura.

Or that Rider fulfilled the kind of relationship that she wanted to have with Rin, while Sakura unknowingly filled the void Medusa's sisters left in her life. I thought she was more of a guardian angel really, not a romantic interest. Kind of like how Heracles was to Illya.

What would have made you like it?

If I could maybe forget about the threesome with Shirou and the implied romantic feelings Rider has for him in Ataraxia that would be great.

Despite not shipping it, do you have anything positive to say about it?

Sakura deserves all the happiness in the world and I really do believe that Rider could fulfill that.

Diarmuid x Cú - Ship it

What made you ship it?

oooh this probably sounds surprising since based on my content you'd think, no i dont ship this BUT I DOOOOOOO (i just happen to hc them as bros more often)

Honestly what did make me ship it is the parallels.

What are your favorite things about the ship?

IMO They have the biggest potential for hurt/comfort amongst all the ships mentioned here.

They can help each other get through their trauma. Their whole relationship would be extremely healing and supportive.

I love that Diarmuid seems to have idolized Cú Chulainn at some point and honestly who wouldn't be honored to stand beside him, no?

They could be up to the funniest shenanigans because Cú is chaos and Diarmuid would absolutely be an enabler because when he isn't angst-ing he's super damn chill.

Bros being bros hahahah...unless?

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

Not really. Maybe that I think Lancer Diar and Cascu would get along better and Saber Diar and Lancer Cu would also get along better but honestly any form is good this ship is good

I think it’s because I found out that she was the daughter of the guy who raised Shirou that my interest in her waned through the years. The character I would totally smooch: I guess Archer and Lancer???  The character I’d want to be like: Maybe Shirou??? I really don’t know, it’s been a long time. I think because he knows how to cook and actually clean up afterwards because that’s something I wish I could be inspired to do. The clean up afterwards part. The character I’d slap: The priest guy. No questions about this one. Go find somewhere else to go with your empty inside bullshit. ( I say when my own character is empty inside. lol ). A pairing that I love: Shirou x Sakura???? Shirou x Rin??? Sorry I really don’t know too many ships. A pairing that I despise: Shirou x Saber. Seriously, nope. Get that shit away from me.

Anime Update V2 Last Post

Vinland Saga S2 - None this time. The second half of this second season will begin for me next year.

Hunter x Hunter - It was Spiders VS Ants in the two episodes I saw recently. That's right, the Phantom Troupe returned and this time they actually got up to some good, fighting against an invasion force of Chimera Ants that were besieging a city and taking its population before Zazan, the would-be new queen, who does one of the most disturbing, absolutely heinous things I've seen done in this entire series by twisting these poor people into inhuman slaves forced to fight for her in their constant agonized state of Body Horror. I was rooting for the Spiders to take her and her underlings out, and seeing her true form be so hideous and creaturesque came as no surprise. Also felt for Kalluto as she starts fearing she might be out of her depth with this group, and the way they kill all the enslaved people after making them fight them to the death, to ensure they die like men rather than animals, was surprisingly moving and decent of them. In dire situations, even the bad guys can be the good guys!

Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works - So Saber has taken a new vow and is now technically Rin's servant, but that doesn't much matter when, after a trippy confrontation within the Unlimited Blade Works dimension, Archer abduts Rin and holds her hostage for both Saber and Shirou to fight to retrieve. Shirou arranges a meeting with him at Illya's villa, so that's where Archer decides he'll hold his former master. It also turns out Rin has become well aware of Archer's past, and which heroic spirit he really is, in a way that pretty much spells it out for us but without the name actually being spoken. And then Shinji and Gilgamesh show up, looking to have Rin for their own needs, and Archer agrees to let them have her only once Saber and Shirou are dead. As Saber and Shirou make their way to the villa, they're joined by Lancer, still on their side and wanting to save Rin.

Symphogear AXZ - Finished the season with its last three episodes and yeah, this one really was not as strong as the previous ones. The weird shit that happened pushed the boundaries even for this series (Adam's an android? Gungnir is a "God-slayer" that can absorb Divine Power? Hibiki turns into a cocoon? Saint-Germain's fellow alchemist friends didn't fully die only to then die for real along with her in a big heroic sacrifice? The sacrifice happens at all because fucking America launches a goddamn nuclear missle?), but that itself really was not a big problem. I could still roll with it and enjoy the show. The actual problem is, well, just look at the Wikipedia summary for the last episode of AXZ and its length compared to literally any episode of the series ever. It feels to me like the main conflict of this season was more simple and low-key in execution than what came before, so then the really complicated stuff all had to get shoved into these very last episodes, which leaves this season feeling very notably imbalanced. Hopefully, XV will fare better.

Eureka Seven - With Eureka having fallen ill and her body turned to putty, Holland goes out to find a preist who could use spiritual arts to help in her recovery, but only after making "it's for the money/for me and the crew" excuse rather than being open about how much he cares about Eureka, leading to him and Renton coming to blows yet again and more despicable abuse of an actual child by the belligerent manchild. Renton's own efforts to help out in the Nirvash end up going catastrophically wrong for him (he has to take human life in a very gruesome manner and take an actual good look at what the consequences of being a soldier look like), and the show briefly turns into Evangelion again, complete with Renton screaming his lungs out in a very Shinji-esque fashion. This traumatic experience put on top of Holland's abuse of him and how unable he feels able to really connect with Eureka and the Nirvash no matter how much he wants to, leads to Renton deciding he's had enough and is calling quits on working with Gekko State. So while Dewey is recruiting some old acquaintances of his - a mercenary pair (that's also a married couple) - for his efforts to crush Gekko State, Renton is wandering, all alone.

And with that, I close the lid on 2023 and can look forward to my third and final rebranding of these posts once the new year's come!

Roseate lashes fluttered against porcelain cheeks as malachite apertures slowly came into focus. Where am I this time? It took a while, but she had been able to stand up on her own. The current area that she had been summoned to, at least that’s what she hoped had happened, seemed vaguely familiar, as if she had spent a childhood summer frolicking through the streets without a care in the world. The brisk air nipping at through her rose tainted tresses and whatever bare skin had been shown indicated that it was autumn, perhaps turning over to winter very soon.

Kazehana Kazumi. That was her name, and it would continue to be her name no matter where she was nor what era she was sent to. It would be her name for the rest of her life, and she made sure that whoever had sent her here knew that. Speaking of which, where and when am I? Walking around, Kazumi found herself amidst the crowd. From what she could tell, this era had to be a more modern era than the previous one she had been to. It wouldn’t be that hard to maneuver. Melding into the crowd, Kazumi fatefully walked by a store where the television broadcasted the latest news.

It was Fuyuki 2004. There have been strange happenings around town, things that couldn’t be explained by science or logic. Kazumi could sense the massive amount of mana that resided in this city, and frankly, it worried her. She had remembered hearing about the Fuyuki Holy Grail Wars. All five of them. The mage remembered living with her parents in the comfort of their home in Venice, Italy. If the year was 2004, then the fifth Holy Grail War should be soon. Clicking her tongue, the woman slipped away from the crowd, instead looking for an optimal space where she could summon a Heroic Spirit.

“It would be best to summon her during the night,” the pinkette muttered to herself, a hand ghosting over the silver necklace that hung around her porcelain neck. Perhaps she could— no, she shouldn’t. After all, if she was here, he was bound to be here at someplace as well, or about to be. No, it would be best to summon someone else, and she knew exactly who. The one Heroic Spirit who had been by her side since she had been a child. Her hand immediately went to her side, feeling for the sword she had concealed underneath the all encompassing vast jacket she wore. Good, I can summon her.

Under the cover of the quintessential eventide, Kazumi had been able to find a rather desolate place to commit the summoning ritual. Though, it wasn’t like she had the necessary means to actually summon a Spirit yet. Clicking her tongue, the Mage ventured out to get exactly what she needed. If this had been my hometown, I could easily go back to the house and summon her, no problem! Such an inconvenience, one that she must trudge through in order to save this era. With the materials she needed bundled in her arms, Kazumi began to mark the floor in the pattern of the summoning circle. The intricate patterns always interested her, finding them to be quite hypnotic. “That should do it.”

Once all necessary materials and the relic were in place, Kazumi began to recite the incantation from memory. After all, being from a prominent magus family, she had to learn and memorize the summoning chant from a young age. Never knew when she would have to summon a Servant either for the Holy Grail War or for other purposes.

“Silver and iron to the origin.

Gem and the archduke of contracts to the cornerstone.

The ancestors are my great masters, Kazue and Luciana.

The alighted wind becomes a wall.

The gates in the four directions close, coming from the crown, the three — forked road that leads to the kingdom circulate.

Malachite apertures watched with anticipation as the smoke soon cleared, the materialization of her servant taking place. A humanoid form took shape, filling out into the female body, ample curves in all the right places. The Spirit’s hand grasped the hilt of the sword used to summon her, the weapon’s blade swinging about through the smoke that accompanied the summoned woman. Kazumi’s right hand burned slightly as the command seals became more vivid against her skin, signaling her to thrust her hand out to the figure.

“I summon thee, Sword of the Shadows!”

At last, the figure materialized completely. The woman donned a head of beautiful violaceous — argentate locks, her body covered in the finest amaranthine and opalescent silk dress hemmed with gossamer sterling threads. She was undoubtedly beautiful, an angelic wing like halo about her head. Though, the woman was anything but angelic, her life of being a charlatan evident of that, coupled with the impish chatoyance in her vivid perse oculars. “Servant: Saber. At your service.”

Kazumi’s frontispiece broke out in a heartwarming grin, the rosette leaped towards the newly summoned Servant. “Sia nee — san!” The childhood nickname the Mage used on her beloved Servant stuck well into her life, never wanting to call her anything else except when facing other Master — Servant pairs. “It’s good to see you!” The Saber, on the other hand, could only wrap her arms around her Master, gently patting her head affectionately while the latter squeezed her with all her love.

“Kazu? It’s good to see you too! But if you’re here in this time period, that means — ”

With a solemn nod, Kazumi detangled herself from her Servant, now an austere contortion daubing her countenance. “Yeah…” Facing the city, the Mage let her hands clasp behind her back, a soft yet somber smile perching on her labrums.

“Let’s see what’s wrong with the world this time.”
