prescience as a plot device in DUNE: PART TWO (2024) and ARRIVAL (2016)
protagonists paul and louise both use prescience as a trust-gaining tactic — a "narrow way through," if you will. let's start with paul, who treats his foreseeing ability as a sort of pseudo-telepathy. he sees a possible future where he lives among the fremen and hears their personal anecdotes. then, he simply parrots their own stories back to them to prove that he IS the lisan al-gaib, the voice from the outer world, the unstoppable foreign power who can and will not hesitate to lead them to paradise. you can physically feel the buildup of fear and reverence among the fremen in that scene as paul's immense bravado dispels all skepticism.
dr. louise banks exhibits a similar case. whereas paul is the messiah of the fremen guided by the bene gesserit (through lady jessica), louise is a hero of humanity guided by the heptapods. i'd like to bring up that amazing scene where she looks into the future to see general shang at a celebration of peace, and he ends up telling future!louise exactly what past!louise did to save the world — which she uses to her advantage.
as it becomes apparent over the course of these films, there's something so devastating about the course of action taken by both protagonists. sure, they save the world, but what do they get? complete deprival of humanity and what it means to be a human. they sacrifice self-fulfillment for the fulfillment of a larger prophecy or ideal. after all, how can a person look up to their equal?
take paul and his personal relationships for example. chani of course, but also his closest friends and family (jessica, leto, gurney), are reduced to nothing more than simple variables in the prophecy. and take someone like jamis. in the film, there's a moment where paul says "jamis, talk to me," and these visions of smiling jamis fill the screen, and suddenly we're watching one of paul's futures where he and jamis could have been friends. it's genuinely heartbreaking for paul to see all these futures wither away right before his eyes.
the ending of ARRIVAL is equally shocking to me. great, thanks for saving the world! here’s a lover, and a daughter, but wait, you’ve seen exactly how and when she’ll die from cancer. you’ve seen exactly how and when that very lover will leave you as a result of your passive premonition. but how could you have told him, that you knew everything and could only watch it happen? this was louise’s dilemma.
paul could have found a unconditional community, a place he truly belonged to and identified with. louise could have found her own family, with a loving husband and healthy daughter. their finales present them with everything and nothing: they receive all the recognition in the world, leaving nothing to themselves. the paradox of total control while having no control at all.

Notes: This fic is based on the film Arrival (2016) directed by Dennis Villeneuve. It was such a pleasure to plonk my favorite boys down into the world of one of my favorite films for a while and see how they fared. I owe absolutely gargantuan thanks to: C, who inspires all the best plot points; B, who is the best cheerleader in the world, F, who is so brilliant and thoughtful, R, whose encouragement carried me through to the end, and C who wrangled all my commas into place. I love you all!
But the biggest thanks are due to the fest mods, who made participating such a delight.
Summary: Draco Malfoy is an expert in Ancient Runes at Oxford University’s College of Advanced Magical Studies. When he isn’t at the head of a lecture hall, he spends his time alone in cavernous libraries with only crumbling scrolls and runic dictionaries for company. One day, a group of Ministry officials interrupts his research with the aim of recruiting him to lead an elite team of investigators in a top-secret race against time to decrypt a set of recently uncovered ancient runes that threaten the very fabric of time. Draco feels certain he can save the world, if only he didn’t keep getting distracted by his co-lead, one Chief Cursebreaker Harry Potter. If only that distraction didn’t evolve into something so much more.
Read it now on AO3.
Please help promote the fest by sharing your favourite submissions, so more people can enjoy all the amazing new Drarry works of LCDrarry.
Thank you!

Have you ever watched a film that made you cry? Not because it was sad but because it was so brilliantly intelligent and profound, that the only way to express yourself was by crying?
I have.
