I present, for your viewing pleasure, this year’s February hearts display at the rental company office!

Fancy paper hearts courtesy of me and Miss Cactus back in 2017 (with a few additions from Miss Goldberry in 2019 – that would be the purple ones). This year’s design courtesy of Miss California; I just reassured her it was a good design and helped her get the window heart more or less level. :)

This next project is a Journal Cover with Hand carved and tooled design. I love Carving and tooling, it does take some skill, but that skill can be learned, I used to collect all my scap pieces and carve every day getting used to the swivel knife which felt completely odd. there are some YT vids you can watch too which give lots of tips and I must have watched them all ten times. So, lets get started.

I found a pack of three exercise books of this type, I got a nice piece of the veg tan leather 2-3mm thick. You need to be able to bend it, so not too thick, also to carve into it, so not too thin.

image

I wet the leather (not soaked) and used a rolling pin to gently press the fold just to give me a rough idea of how I want to cut it.

I have my own little way of knowing how much to cut etc to have the books fit nicely on completion, many people on videos will show themselves measuring this and measuring that…but for someone not into lots of measuring this is my way..no measuring …as such…needed, You can see here I have rubbed the leather around the books and now it is quite clear where to cut to give extra stitch room or to stamp edges or to carve and tool…I will keep the ‘extra’ top and bottom lengths untill I’m all stamped and carved / tooled and I have my stitch line in…then those extra bits can go,…voila…no measuring..simple. I’ve said before..to anyone thinking they would like to make things but can’t because of ‘this or that’ issue…don’t give up…there’s always a way, you ‘Can’ make these things..a step at a time.

The plastic ‘creaser’ I use to rub the edges around the books…my fingers get sore very easily so I always find other ways around an issue.

I have a Large book I got from Tandy and it has some large pages of design pictures, I get my flower design ideas from this book and as seen here, using ordinary tracing paper and a pencil I begin the transfer process from the paper to the leather.

On the right is the first doll I ever made!

When I decided to make Loki again I thought it would be cool to show the improvement I’ve made over past 7 months or so. Mainly for motivation since most people tend to say that they could never learn to crochet because it’s too complex. But honestly practice makes perfect! Anyone can learn to crochet if they put their mind to it

Hopefully I’ll have another doll finished by the end of today. Wish me luck XD

And as usual feel free to reblog!
