Day 13: Class Differences - The daughter of the Hand and the son of the King
The Red Keep and Flea Bottom
She had been sleeping in Flea Bottom, on rooftops and in stables, wherever she could find a place to lie down, and it hadn't taken her long to learn that the district was well named.

one of my favorite details in asoiaf is how fucking mean gendry is. like this piss poor fucking peasant doesn’t give a shit who you are or how high born you are.
when ned goes to see him in AGOT and all gendry is worried about is if ned will try and take his helmet and tells him he can’t have it. this is literally the kings hand does gendry care … NOPE!
edric in ASOS literally barely speaking to him and gendry already doesn’t like him (bro was jealous for no reason arya could careless about him and edric wasn’t interested).
when brienne in AFFC goes to give gendry food and hasn’t done anything to make gendry not like her and he calls her ugly and tells her to fuck off. bonus when he just talks shit about robert calling him a fat drunk king.
then whenever it’s aryas chapters he’s still moody but so much nicer to her.
god i love this silly little angry guy.

Sansa: If I fall…
Theon: I’ll be there to catch you.
Jaime: *looks at Brienne* What if I fall?
Brienne: Then I’ll fall with you, never leaving your side.
Gendry: *watches both interactions*
Gendry, to Arya: And if I fall?
Arya: I’ll be the one who pushed you.

“All I know is you're beautiful, and I love you, and none it will be worth anything if you’re not with me. So be with me.” GENDRY & ARYA Game of Thrones — Season 8 (requested by anonymous)

I know Ned was stressed as hell seeing his daughter, who resembles Lyanna physically and in attitude, become friends with Robert’s bastard son and Edric Dayne aka mister pale blonde hair and purple eyes. Like that man was about to die again from a heart attack, hands shaking as he pulled at his hair, thinking to himself “no, gods, no. Not this again. No one give my girl a flower please”

the stark sibs tendency for falling for traitors if you're willing to tweak interpretation and squint. oh, robb with his squid boyfriend who sold him out for possibility (!) of daddy's attention. oh, jon who fell for littlefinger's spy. oh, sansa and her dog who didn't stay when she needed him. oh, arya and her stubborn bull who sees the monstrosity of her mother and yet does nothing. oh, bran and meera who will have to choose between a friend and brother.

Ah yes, the boy who’s currently staying at the last known location of Arya and who’s entire personality shifted because of her kidnapping is was definitely never intended to have any further importance in her story. Brienne reminding the readers of his parentage was also just a funny tidbit that George added for shits and giggles. No importance, he just wanted to make fun of Brienne for still liking Renly is all…
Also find it fucking hilarious that people sight the show as giving Gendry “more importance than he was ever intended for” ,when Arya just hooks up with him and fucks off while he’s left with a title but literally nothing else of importance in the story. He might as well have kept rowing. (On top of the show cutting a lot of their important scenes)

Honestly? Still kinda ticked Gendrya didn't end up together and that all the surviving Stark children were BY THEMSELVES at the end of the series even the whole point of their story was their love for their family and wanting to find their way back to eachother

Day 8: Romantic tropes - The other dress
It was even worse than before; Lady Smallwood insisted that Arya take another bath, and cut and comb her hair besides; the dress she put her in this time was sort of lilac-colored, and decorated with little baby pearls.

“Your Seven have a sept, Sept-Beyond- the-Sea, but only Westerosi sailors worship there.” They are not my Seven. They were my mother’s gods, and they let the Freys murder her at the Twins. She wondered whether she would find a godswood in Braavos, with a weirwood at its heart.
…all but the black-haired boy from the forge, who crossed his arms against his chest and sat glowering as the others prayed. Brienne was not the only one to notice. When the prayer was done Septon Meribald looked across the table, and said, “Do you have no love for the gods, son?” “Not for your gods.” Gendry stood abruptly. “I have work to do.” He stalked off without a bite of food. “Is there some other god he loves?”asked Hyle Hunt. “The Lord of Light,” piped one scrawny boy, nigh to six.

Is Arya and Gendry's relationship supposed to reference Lyanna and Robert in some way, or is any similarity there purely incidental and superficial?
It's clearly not the central point of their interaction, but I think it does speak to some irony here.
I think Robert very much wanted to recreate the match he felt he should have had in betrothing his son to Ned's daughter, and that it's very much deliberate that it just does not work out. Just as Robert didn't actually know Lyanna, with that second attempt at the match he's more smashing dolls together than thinking about Joffrey or Sansa as individuals.
Arya and Gendry, still the interaction between Robert's son and Ned's daughter, arises in circumstances that have very little to do with Robert at all. The person Gendry is has far more to do with Robert's absence and negligence than his presence. The 'match' (such as it is) that Robert idealised so much happens between the actually Lyanna-like Arya Robert hardly noticed and a son Robert didn't even care to know.
