So I read this novel recently because it was short and it happened to be on my Kindle.
Quality-wise, it isn't bad. I've read much worse.
Thematically, however, it all seems a bit crypto-fascist.
So first of all, what is this novel? It's not quite alternate history, because it takes place thousands of years in the future. However, it's the future OF an alternate history in which the nazis won World War II.
This in itself is not a red flag. Could be an interesting setting.
The first red flag? Both the main characters are nazis. In fact, almost every character in the story is a nazi. The closest thing this story has to a hero is a nazi. Now, he's a nazi because he's been the victim of a lifetime of propaganda, and this is obviously meant to be tragic, but still: the ONLY character who comes close to acting heroic is a nazi.
Second red flag: although the novel is set in a brutal warzone, it's mentioned multiple times that Europe is a peaceful, civilized, prosperous place... which is completely populated by genetically modified aryans and ruled by the nazi party.
Third red flag: the only other major power shown is an Islamic empire, which is depicted as behaving as brutally as the nazis, if not more so. The nazis believe that their enemies are Jewish, but it is explained by one of the enemy soldiers that the Jews are a peaceful and unremarkable people, and that the ones that the nazis have been fighting are a mix of Islamic soldiers and their Christian conscripts. So the book seems not to be antisemitic--but possibly Islamophobic.
Fourth red flag: The story would have worked just as well if it were about an imaginary evil empire, rather than one based on the historical nazis. I honestly think nothing is gained by this being a specifically nazi-dominated future, or in fact of even occurring on this planet. Evil fascist empires can exist completely independently of earth and its history (see: Star Wars).
Overall, the book just seems to portray nazism (albeit a "revised" version of nazism that evolved over thousands of years) a little too positively.
I don't trust it.

In 1913, Brooklyn-based engineer Carrol Livingston Riker approached the papers with a plan to solve the issue of cold winters in Canada and New England... by diverting the Gulf Stream that provides Western Europe with its temperate climate so that the warm ocean currents provide their benefits to the Eastern parts of North America instead, such as warmer winters and fewer icebergs.
The manner with this would be achieved, Riker states, would be by building a 200 mile long pier off the coast of Newfoundland along the Grand Bank to where the deep ocean begins, meaning that in places the pier would have to be some 300 plus feet deep in places.
Naturally the fact that this would plunge the British Isles and Western continental Europe into freezing winters that match those in Northern Canada (Britain being at the same latitude as places like Labrador, Canada) isn't lost on the writers of the article in the St Louis Star and Times, nor the fact that as Canada was a British colony at the time which the United States would have to potentially annex to complete the megastructure, but Riker considers the overall net good (for Americans) makes the benefits outweigh the costs.
Tumblr media
Despite the devastating climate catastrophe for Europe (the Star and Times amusingly suggesting that it could also cause the poles to shift) that could occur from this theoretical plan, Riker nonetheless received support from folk from both Harvard and Yale, in addition to the United States Naval Observatory, with the engineer also presenting his arguments so successfully to New York Representative Calder he attempted to introduce a bill to Congress to obtain funding for the project...
This did not actually happen, obviously, but it bring to mind a similar project first proposed in 1928 by German architect Herman Sörgel, which he named Atlantropa. Here Sörgel proposed damming and draining the Mediterranean, with the control flow of water through dams at Gibraltar and other points around the sea, which he theorised would create endless energy, new resources and uncovered land for people to settle in Southern Europe and Northern Africa.
Tumblr media
However, much like Riker's pier, this would have ALSO created horrible climate change issues (rather than creating new farmland it would essentially turn the Med into a giant salt desert, which the sun would heat further causing the potential desertification of Southern Europe), technological issues with constructing the project in the first place, would have bankrupted all the countries that required access to the Med to trade, AND further opening up Africa and the Middle East to even more colonisation efforts by European powers.

Confused as to how the libertarians are planning on building a new libertarian city in the Mediterranean, med's already spoken for, unless they're planning on doing atlantropa don't think there's anywhere that there's anywhere they can really claim.

what your thoughts on TNO dev's choice to transition the feel from being more pulpy and dramatic to being more "realistic"? I kinda dislike it myself since I feel like the pulp and grimdark feel was what made this setting really stand out and help highlight the horror an axis victory would entail
Well, a lot of the pulpy stuff was frankly ridiculous. Atlantropa is memey, but frankly it was very stupid. I think more realism is actually a good thing for the mod - you don't need pulp to showcase just how horrifying an Axis victory is. To me, that seemed cartoonish and detracted from the real horror that an Axis victory would entail.
What bothers me more is an emphasis on realism without a subsequent follow-through. The new take on Gus Hall is poorly-researched, and that pulls me out of the immersion. Bormann's path actually having a competent end, given his complete and utter incompetence and the dysfunctionality of the Nazi economic system, likewise is pulp of an entirely different sort.
Different strokes though.
Thanks for the question, Anon.

Here’s a collection of drawings I’ve made for my personal story that I’m working, these are two groups stuck in a constant cycle of violence deep within the chasm underneath the city of Atlantropa.

Atlantropa is gone in the next TNO update. Any thoughts on the mod’s direction since PinkPanzer left?-TBH
Eh, Atlantropa was kind of dumb anyway. It was nice when it was a big monument to the absolute stupidity of Nazi engineering projects (seriously, look at the plans for Hitler's envisioned Germania and laugh), but there's plenty of that already from the Reich's economic collapse to all of Bormann's story. I wasn't as invested as some of the others on the TNOmod subreddit when it came to Atlantropa.
Still, it'll be sad to see Iberia lose out on one of its long-term goals of completing the Gibraltar Dam.
Thanks for the question, TBH.
