YOI meta: How episode 7 lays bare Viktor's strong compassion and his struggles with putting himself in someone else's shoes
Of all the events in episode 7, the kiss and the fight in the underground parking get most of the attention, but how often do we discuss the deep care Viktor exhibits for Yuuri in this episode and the difficulties he faces in the process?
Having learned the general aspects of supporting an athlete in competition in episode 5 (I discussed this at length here), Viktor now pays more attention to Yuuri's mood and actively supports him. However, there's a striking discrepancy between his compassion and his clumsy attempts to help Yuuri. Viktor has no prior experience with coaching, and he's not familiar with anxiety either, wherefore some difficulties are to be expected. However, his trial-and-error-informed handling of the situation implies general struggles with putting himself in someone else's shoes.
Let's go through this from the start:
Tumblr media
Seeing Yuuri nervous and overtired the morning before the free skating worries Viktor. However, he neither understands Yuuri's feelings nor does he have a clue about what Yuuri is thinking. He thus resorts to his own experience to solve the problem: taking a nap. Note that, whereas this enables Yuuri to catch up on some sleep, it doesn't solve the underlying cause of his anxiety.
Tumblr media
However, Viktor underestimates Yuuri's anxiety which renders his effort ineffective. At the warm-up, Yuuri is less than one hour away from his free skating, and his anxiety is getting worse. This forces Viktor to take more drastic action, for which he relies on past observations of Yuuri.
Tumblr media
As a coach, Viktor has to weigh the risk of a panicky Yuuri messing up against a calmer but less prepared Yuuri messing up. Yuuri has reached a point where forbidding him to jump during the warm-up is worth a try despite the risk of sending him into the free skating poorly prepared. It's a very savage solution, though. Not that Viktor canonically is savage at times, but in a sport that heavily relies on muscle memory, this instruction borders recklessness. I wonder what Yakov would say to this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Using observations, past experiences, and logic to empathise with and support someone is a common workaround for people with poor cognitive empathy. Viktor does this a lot, especially in this episode. His low cognitive empathy is also the reason for his canonical bluntness.
In my experience, this workaround leads to mixed results as observation and reason can only compensate for so much. The good news is that it becomes more effective with experience, even more so when one is aware of their issues with perspective-taking. Viktor is only 27 and he's smart and committed; he can totally improve this skill in the future.
Please note that struggling with cognitive empathy doesn't make someone a bad person. There are several empathy types which work together but manifest differently in people depending on personality/neurotype. The emotional empathy, which enables a person to share someone's emotional experience, is not affected by this. In Viktor's case, it works pretty normal as I will detail in the following.
Tumblr media
Viktor has learned that a lecture is inappropriate when Yuuri disobeys his instructions (and it doesn't stop Yuuri from disobeying again). As Yuuri is visibly distraught, he thus tries to comfort Yuuri using another method common for poor cognitive empathy: He uses facts and makes it sound as if it's not a big deal. Spoiler: for someone with anxiety, it is.
Tumblr media
While facts work great as a great reality check and are more effective than flowers of speech, Yuuri is already too far gone to feel comforted. Facts and logic only work in the early stages of an anxiety episode. From Yuuri's perspective, Viktor's cheerful tone suggests he doesn't take the situation seriously, even though quite the contrary is true. As a result, Yuuri sees his feelings dismissed and withdraws into himself as he spirals into a panic attack.
Tumblr media
This image speaks volumes of the isolation Yuuri experiences in his anxiety as well as Viktor's compassion and lack of understanding as he turns away from the camera. This boy is deeply worried but has no fucking clue how to handle the situation as it's uncharted territory. As the free skating progresses, Viktor is under increasing pressure to get Yuuri into a headspace that allows him to skate clean. Again, he relies on logic to solve the situation. However, while removing Yuuri from the anxiety-inducing situation is helpful, it doesn't eliminate the source of his distress.
Tumblr media
In Yuri!!!, characterisation is often narrated through minor characters. While Chris's lines express bitterness about losing Viktor as a rival, they also reveal Viktor's change from being 100% devoted to the ice to 100% devoted to Yuuri. And you can see how much he cares for Yuuri on his face.
However, Viktor's efforts continue to be ineffective, which at this point is no longer surprising. So, in the following, we see more clumsy attempts at calming Yuuri in the following:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This entire episode is a textbook example of Viktor gloriously failing at taking Yuuri's perspective. As the situation escalates and Viktor fails to reach Yuuri, he finally starts to analyse Yuuri's distress.
Tumblr media
While Yuuri's anxiety dominates the plot, the depth of Viktor's care and compassion is told through small details like expressions and gestures like the tenderness with which he holds Yuuri's face as he covers his ears. Even more so than the scene in the mixed zone, this frame perfectly captures the discrepancy between Viktor's emotional and cognitive empathy.
With Yuuri's free skating approaching rapidly, the pressure to solve the situation is on Viktor, and the inevitable happens: he messes up completely.
Tumblr media
I cannot stress enough how much Viktor sucks at perspective-taking. It's already hard for most people to understand anxiety disorder if they haven't experienced it themselves. But Viktor having such a hard time with perspective-taking is a general issue, and it runs like a thread through the entire series. One cannot overcome this by just trying hard enough as it's cause by a differently wired brain.
And so, here in the underground car park, Viktor's inability to put himself into Yuuri's shoes reaches a dramatic climax as he threatens Yuuri with resigning as his coach as a last resort.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While cutting into someone's panic attack by directing their anxiety at something else appears to be an effective emergency exit, it's one of the worst things you can do to a person with anxiety disorder as it creates a new demon in their head. Don't. Do. This. Ever. Yuuri might go into the free skating relieved, but he will agonise over Viktor returning to his home country throughout the next two episodes. As I said above, anxiety defies reason. (I'll write more about how Yuuri's anxiety works in another meta-post.)
Right here, it drives them even further apart, as represented by their physical distance.
Tumblr media
Viktor could not be any farther away from understanding Yuuri. He has not a fucking clue what he's doing. He's just trying out what comes to his mind, and it backfires.
Tumblr media
Ahh, I love him to pieces but I want to slap some sense into him! I solemnly swear that from now on, every time I agonise over my poor social skills, I will think of how Viktor fucked up in the underground parking and Yuuri forgave him.
Tumblr media
Ironically, Viktor's trial & error approach finally succeeds. As Yuuri starts to cry, the underlying cause of his fear is finally unveiled.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Asking Yuuri right away would have avoided this escalation, but that's not how Viktor's brain operates. At least he is aware of his issues to somewhat extent.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To calm Yuuri, he comes up with something I guess is another default that worked in the past:
Tumblr media
Nope. This is not how you introduce the subject to your boyfriend, Viktor! Not when he's upset. You could have just given him a hug, but the idea doesn't even cross your mind even though you seem to be a hugger by nature.
On the other hand, Yuuri didn't communicate his needs unprompted, but communication is key. You cannot expect a person with poor cognitive empathy to magically anticipate your needs and read your mind. It just doesn't work that way.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, the Stammi Vicino reference is lost in the Crunchyroll subs, but that's what Yuuri says to make Viktor understand.
Tumblr media
Note how close they are again, while people in the corridor are blurred. The creators did an amazing job at letting images speak for the characters.
Tumblr media
I doubt asking Yakov would have helped. Not only because Yakov would have used the situation to dismiss Viktor once more as a coach but because Yakov's method is unsuitable for a student suffering from anxiety. However, as Yakov is one of Viktor's to-go-to defaults, he naturally considers the option.
Tumblr media
Imagine this scene but with Yuuri. Just nope.
Now back to the aftermath of Viktor messing up and saving Yuuri from going into his free skating with a panic attack by accident rather than design. While Yuuri is relieved of his anxiety, the situation is still awkward as he and Viktor had no time to make up or process the fight.
Tumblr media
This small gesture of reassurance is so important as it gives them both closure that enables them to enjoy the free skating. I regard the tissue as a token of peace (I mean it even contains his DNA).
Ultimately, Viktor's trial & error approach to calming Yuuri succeeds. Yuuri, albeit rightfully annoyed, understands the intention and recognises Viktor's affection and compassion in his clumsy attempts to support him, which culminates in him reciprocating his affection by jumping Viktor's signature move.
Tumblr media
Does low cognitive empathy make Viktor a bad coach? Certainly not. Viktor is very passionate about the task and his high emotional empathy and his natural drive to support Yuuri with all his heart speak for themselves. Like everyone, he needs to grow into his role and make it work for him. In Yuuri, he has someone who calls him out on his bullshit gives him immediate feedback he can use to improve.
Episode 7 is a major learning experience for Viktor in understanding Yuuri and supporting him in a distressing situation. And as Yuuri can see beyond Viktor's flaws, it brings them closer together.
A side note on harmful mischaracterisation
High/normal emotional but low cognitive empathy is a trait of autism albeit not necessarily limited to it, which is one of the reasons many autistic fans of Yuri!!! including me identify with Viktor. (I have a theory that the creators accidentally gave him a bunch of autistic traits when they applied the socially awkward genius trope, which generates autistic-coded characters per default. I discussed these traits and why autism is a valid interpretation in response to another post that brought up the subject.)
Whether or not Viktor is autistic, his struggles with perspective-taking are so obvious I consider them canon. I suspect this spurred fan theories from Viktor having ulterior motives for becoming Yuuri's coach to labelling him as downright evil. It explains takes like "Viktor became Yuuri's coach because he was bored and doesn't care about coaching at all until some arbitrary point mid-season where he suddenly falls in love with Yuuri". While I believe that everyone is entitled to their own headcanon and can change characters for their fics in whatever way they like, labelling his behaviour as uncaring, ill-intent or assuming a hidden agenda and calling it canon or at least a valid interpretation not only mischaracterises Viktor but hurts and demonises autistics and other people dealing with this issue. So please for the love of god and the YOI creators keep that in mind!

Yuuri Katsuki from "Yuuri!!! on ICE" is so autistic coded that it can be called canon. He never acted and thought like neurotypical people do, he turns one of his hyper fixations into his career, in one scene he can't stand being touched by other people, don't know how to deal with his own feelings, and seems overall strange around people. Another post in this blog also reminded me that he avoids eye contact like, an awful lot - you can literally count the scenes when he makes direct eye contact.
One of his friends, Phichit Chulanont, seems autistic too, especially when they're together and when he's talking about his dream. Otabek Altin appears only in like three scenes but he can be seen as autistic too depending on the point of view.
If we go really deep though, literally half of the cast is autistic in very different ways.

Victor nikiforov and empathy:
Following my fifth (?) rewatch I found yet another reason to be completely in love with Yuri on Ice, and that is Victor being a wonderfully accurate and non-demonized example of someone with low empathy. Seriously as someone who’s autistic and can’t relate to the influx of “actually we’re all super in tune to other’s feelings and have the MOST empathy!”, watch these scenes because this is what it’s like.
Tumblr media
This line at first seems to be Yakov thinking that Victor is arrogant, but Yakov knows him extremely well. He knows that Victor has a hard time viscerally placing himself in another’s shoes, and that’s a major obstacle as a coach.
Victor has trouble understanding what to do in situations that are highly emotional for Yuuri. Instead of being able to directly consider things through Yuuri’s perspective, we see him rely pretty often on environment cues, behavioral cause and affect, or straightforward commands.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He gets his habit of scolding yuri after a routine from Yakov because that’s what he’s familiar with. It’s not something Yuuri responds to particularly well, but it’s only when Victor pays attention to how others react when Yuuri finishes skating that he changes tactic. Victor sees how the crowd is going wild at the (Japan nationals) and it’s only then it occurs to him that Yuuri’s confidence may be jeopardized if he chooses that moment to criticize his performance. This is something he likely would’ve realized much sooner if he could share Yuuri’s stress easier instead of merely observing that it’s happening.
Then later on in episode 7, we get to the scene that actually inspired this post.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At first Victor approached the situation almost like an experiment, trying out cause and effect to disastrous results. When you have a much lower threshold for being able to experience another’s feelings second hand, it’s difficult not to think of other’s negative emotions simply as problems that need to be solved. Problem: Yuuri won’t perform well because he’s too anxious, he will only be MORE upset if he loses, and Victor has already tried to reduce his anxiety to no avail. Idea for solution: raise the stakes and see if increased pressure can replace his nerves with resolve, causing a good performance. Afterward, Yuuri will be proud of himself and happy again. Execute plan, observe results, adjust accordingly. When comfort doesn’t come naturally, this tends to be kind of the default. From experience it comes from a genuine place of caring even when it backfires (and it actually doesn’t at times), basically trying to actually fix the thing upsetting your loved one instead of play acting feelings you don’t get.
… however Yuuri was COMPLETELY within his rights yelling at Victor because regardless of intent he picked the worst thing on planet earth to say in that exact moment. I mean I’ve had my fair share of “oh crap someone is upset and it’s my responsibility” fails but my fuck-
Tumblr media
He’s shown to be pretty shit at comforting Yuri/ detached emotionally from the situation, but he is neither coldly unbothered nor strategically hiding it. It may appear callous to bluntly say “I don’t know how to help you” to a loved one who’s crying, but as someone who’s been there, that’s an insanely vulnerable thing to admit. “I don’t feel your pain, I don’t get it. But I love you, and just because I’m not feeling it myself doesn’t mean I don’t care that you’re hurting.”
Tumblr media
When Yuri finally just straight up tells Victor what to do, he is relieved and simply does it. Things are different between them after this episode because Yuuri finds the power to communicate his needs clearly and effectively. Victor doesn’t speak “subtlety” well. Yakov and Yurio both speak their mind to him directly regardless of if it’s polite, Which is quite telling because they’re the two characters he has the longest history with. It shows us the kind of communication style Victor is accustomed to and needs to navigate interpersonal relationships.
I’m not making a statement that Victor is autistic or even disordered per say. I feel his unusual circumstances provide enough explanation, but I really do see that he consistently struggles with empathy in the same way I do. He’s probably the only character I’ve been able to see that aspect of myself in with scenes that aren’t played for jokes.

Autistic Anime Boys Prelims - Propaganda Division - Group 3
Tumblr media
Propaganda:
Gene -
"Has a special interest in film and almost works himself to death because he doesn't think his film is as perfect as he wants it to be. He completely botches a project on purpose, an action blockbuster, because he felt like it wasn't respecting the thing he loves the most."
Kei -
"It was the scene in which Makoto and Nao discover that he was able to stuff so many wild plants into his bookbag bc there was literally nothing in it that sold it for me. I can't put it into words. I just see that and I know. I know that boy is autistic."
Arthur -
"His powers are literally fueled by his special interest in knights and chivalry."
Euini -
"I relate a lot to his social anxiety, especially his performance anxiety that occurs when he's being watched by people, particularly due to his stress at needing to follow the plan/do things the "proper" way in order to not feel like he's a failure. he also stands like a lil autistic kid and i appreciate him so much for that.
(LIGHT SPOILERS) basically, he has a test that he needs to take in order to advance as a witch, and he keeps failing it because he cant perform properly while being watched by other people, even though he knows the "right" spells to use and why he's supposed to use them. on his third attempt of the test, he's prepared a "script" to use so that he can follow it and not worry about failing in the moment (in this case, his script is a hand-written book of the proper spells to use and the order in which he's supposed to use them), but when a part of the exam changes, he's no longer able to follow his script. because he's been taught all his life that there's only one proper way of doing things, his way of thinking is very rigid and he's not able to deviate from his plan without panicking. luckily, one of his fellow examinees (richeh from the autistic anime girls poll 💕) is able to convince him to try and change the way that he does things to something that is more attuned to his personal needs- basically change the way that he casts his spells and which spells to use so that he doesn't need to struggle with doing things in the way that everyone says that he should; the way that he cant seem to manage. but, even before richeh helped him with that though, he was still finding way to modify the "proper" spells a little bit to better suit his weaknesses. he was trying so hard to fit in to the mold that witch society gave him, but it just wasnt right for him and he was making it work however he could."
Westar -
"something something Westar's entire character is an anomaly amongst the other denizens of Labyrinth in that he's a big goofball in a world where everything is dictated to the extreme by its ruler. if that's not an autism metaphor of some kind I don't know what is."
Sousuke -
"Sousuke Sagara is an ex-child soldier turned teenage special ops who has to go undercover at a high school to discreetly bodyguard another student. The only problem is that he has no IDEA how to act like a "normal" teenager. Sure, you can say that a lot of his mannerisms come from the whole "raised as a child soldier" thing which, fair, you could make a decent case for (C)PTSD. However, he's also extremely serious and has notorious flat affect and does not understand when other people are joking at all. He's incredibly literal; there's several scenes where he misinterprets what someone says, like the time he asked the art teacher what a model was supposed to do and got a rambling flowery metaphorical response about "becoming one with nature" so he ran off to hide in the woods. Another thing, his social skills are… lackluster at best. He's very blunt, and also a terrible liar for an undercover agent, when the student in question confronted him his strategy was to repeat the same phrase over and over again. One time he's challenged to see if he can pick up any girls, and after a brief misunderstanding his "improved" flirting tactic was to jump in front of them and say "Hi! Would you like to know the names of defense agency spies?" Speaking of, Sousuke has an obvious special interest in the military tech and giant robots he works with. He reads their magazines for fun and was able to rattle off the specs for a model Russian tank. The first time he actually looks happy is when he accidentally starts infodumping in front of the class while introducing himself. One time he got distracted on a mission (and need I remind you, Sousuke takes his job VERY seriously) because he found someone who was also interested in the giant robots and got into a full-on conversation with them and completely forgot what he was doing. It is IMPOSSIBLE to read this boy as allistic. And sure, he might be a little stiff, but he's also very caring in his own awkward way. One time he gave a girl flowers as an apology gift…because they were poppies and he told the girl she could get rich by selling opium on the black market. The "picking up girls" challenge mentioned earlier ended with him helping a grandmother pick out a toy for her grandson. He agreed to pretend to be someone's boyfriend for a day (it went exactly how you'd expect, but it's the thought that counts). In conclusion: stan Sousuke Sagara. and vote for him too."
Katsuhira -
"His entire thing over the course of the entire show is that he doesn't feel pain or emotions like other people. He isn't 'interested in himself' or other people (low empathy) and doesn't realize that the things that happen to/because of him do effect other people, he doesn't realize when people have a crush on him or want to be friends, and all of this is stuff he kinda comes to realize as the show progresses. He struggles to care for himself physically because of the lack of physical and emotional input he experiences, and his friends canonically often cook for him and have to remind him to eat, and is a bit picky about what he eats. He cannot read social cues to save his life and is very blunt and honest when communicating with others, and doesn't talk with much tone or emotion in his voice."
John -
"Is very loud and passionate and says everything he thinks out loud, not understanding why others may see that as weird. Has difficulty controlling his volume, so he's almost always shouting."
Yuuri -
"So he models his entire life around the first celebrity he gets a crush on. He's takes up that celebrity's hobby, he gets the same kind of dog that his crush has, and he definitely has his bedroom wallpaper with his crush's face. But then, he actually meets his crush. And his crush likes him back. Naturally he panics over this and proceeds to deny it for months until his crush straight up kisses him. Then like a day later, he just, buys a ring and proposed to his crush on the spot. He's the guy ever. He's so socially awkward, yet somehow still incredibly cocky."
Yoshimori -
"Baking special interest but does Not Get math my beloved."

My insane plot for a possible season 2 of Yuuri!! on Ice
Okay Yuuri on Ice stans, tear me to shreds xx
-set about two and a half to three years after s1
-Yurio is setting up to go to the olympics for the first time and Yuri and Victor are still skating competitively
-Victor still has his whole complex about having to constantly surprise people and his big idea this year is for him and Yuuri to begin pair skating
-Yuuri is completely against this because I headcanon he’s a bit insecure in his masculinity due to his more feminine build and struggles with conveying traditionally masculine sexuality and traits. He’s is still a lot more confident in himself because of his arc in s1 but I think that’s a bit more tied to his abilities as a skater and the fact he’s just as talented and deserving of his title as anyone else
- so Yuuri is all like but Victor i would have to be the “girl” and idk if I’m comfortable with that
-Victor (because he’s still a bit of a self focused twat) brushes Yuuri’s insecurities off as silly, partly because he can’t comprehend the idea of anyone seeing Yuuri as anything other than the hottest most sexy man to ever, but also because he’s so wrapped up in this idea he cannot let it go
-so Victor is like please please please Yuuri we have to do this or I’ll die and spends a majority of the first episode haranguing Yuuri about it until he begrudgingly agrees
- I sort of headcanon that Victor kind of makes Yuuri insecure and intimidated in the sense that Victor is always so much and Yuuri consistently struggles to keep up (he might just be autistic but it  doesn’t matter either way) and this paired with the fact that Victor has a tendency to get wrapped up in himself and not think about other people's feelings leads to them not being on the same wavelength AT ALL and a good portion of their first season as pairs is absolutely dreadful because they both to refuse to communicate or even outright acknowledge these issues between them
-It gets even worse when Yuri’s grandad dies and Victor and Yuuri put their entire season on hold to fly out and parent this boy through his grief whilst managing his olympic training
-It all culminates when the pressure gets to be two much for Yuuri and like they’re in training and they don’t land a jump or something silly and small and Yuuri just blows up
- Yuuri screams to Victor about how he never wanted to do this and how he cannot cope with the anxiety having to skate as a pair is putting on him and Victor is so wrapped up in his own shit that he refuses to acknowledge Yuuri’s feelings in any meaningful way, and how this is all on top of them having to try their best to support Yuuri who has all of his own stuff going on and needs them because he’s at the peak of his career and it’s far more important than their stupid pais skate and Victor’s ego.
-Victor gets angry too because Yuuri calls their pair skate stupid and goes off on one right back about how Yuuri is just being selfish and how he’s jealous that he’ll never shine as bright as Victor did. Loads of stupid petty things that he doesn’t mean and more so says because he struggles to comprehend the fact that what he’s done could’ve hurt Yuuri when he was doing it for the both of them (I think at this point since Victor is turning 30 he probably has a bit of a complex about being washed up and just doesn’t want Yuuri to feel the same way about himself which is why he puts double the effort into surprising everyone as he did prior to their relationship) He’s also probably angry at himself for having not realised he’s hurt Yuuri in such a big way. (I honestly headcanon Victor as having ADHD which is why he’s so forgetful and for lack of a better term muchy. And also why he struggles with empathy at times)
-Because of what Victor says Yuuri is rightfully really upset and they basically break up and go their own ways for a while
- I think Yuuri probably flies back home to Hasetsu and Victor finds himself wherever Yurio is (Wherever the Olympics is that year. The next winter olympics is in Italy so let’s say there)
-This bit of the plot get’s a bit muddy but I think Yuuri probably just mopes and Victor get’s a serious talking to from Yuri about how he’s a narcissistic pig and that Yuuri is constantly doing the most for him and he’s kind of ungrateful (this is all explained in a very angry Yuri way of course)
-Victor realises the error of his ways and probably makes some sappy Victor-esque comment about how proud he is of Yuri and how much he’s grown. But then he’s like But how could I ever apologise after what I’ve said s Yuri makes a joke about romcoms and grand romantic gestures
-Victor being Victor takes it completely seriously and flies all the way out to Hasetsu on a whim to apologise to Yuuri in a grand romantic gesture
-They talk it out and Victor apologises and reassures Yuuri that it doesn’t matter what stereotypes negate and that he’s a man if he says he is and nothing will ever change that and he’s beautiful irregardless of nonsense tradition (Victor Nikiforov gender non-conformities number one fan)
-Yuuri also apologises for not being more plain about his feelings and just expecting Victor to be able to read his mind
-They both make up and decide to finish the season together as equals
- they make it to nationals by the skin of their teeth but once they’re there they are so gay and in love and perfect for each other that they skate their very best
-From here I can’t decide if they make it onto the podium and don’t win as a parallel to season one or if they do win and it just conveys how perfect they are and how much they love each other
-whatever happens the two of them are content because they did it together
-Nationals finish just in time for them to fly back to Italy and see Yuri compete
-He doesn’t win but it’s fine because he’s only 18 and has plenty of time to and they're both so proud of him anyway and his grandpa would be too
- From there they live happily ever after i guess
-I think maybe Victor and Yuuri retire and decide to just skate for themselves and for fun. I think they probably also become Yuri’s coaches
—--------Other things of note—--------------------
-I think throughout the season we do spend some time with Yuri and see him trying to cope with the loss of his grandpa
-Otabek and Yuri bonding because I think their friendship is something really special to Yuri
-Phichit is also competing at the Olympics because I love him and he deserves success
-I also think Phichit is the only person Yuuri properly confides in about how stressed out and dreadful he’s feeling so he emotionally supports him through a lot of that
-I don’t really know what Chris will do throughout the season but he’s definitely there because I also love him

It is July, which is disability pride-month! So here are 12 multi-fandom physical, sensory and mental disability hc's, both visual and invisual!
Maedhros from the Silmarillion is canonically an amputee, I headcanon him as being autistic and having PTSD, fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, he's also depressed
Yuri Plisetsky from Yuri on Ice has Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and ADHD
Legolas from the Lord of the Rings has dyslexia and Cerebral Palsy
Atsushi Murasakibara from Kuroko's Basketball is autistic and has ARFID and Marfan's. He also has chronic pain due his frame and overworking at a young age. He is also depressed.
Yuuri Katsuki from Yuri on Ice has anxiety, panic disorder and binge eating disorder (these are not directly stated, but likely canon) I also hc him as autistic and having chronic migraines
Midorima Shintaro from Kuroko's Basketball has sever visual impairment and has autism and OCD. He also suffers from depression.
Celegorm from the Silmarillion has ADHD and Ablinism, which causes visual impairment, but this is limited given that elves have much better eyesight to start with, this means he is not legally blind, but very light sensitive and often relies on sound rather than sight while hunting.
Fëanor from the Silmarillion has autism, PTSD, depression and OCD
Akashi Seijurou from Kuroko's Basketball has DID and BPD
Amras from the Silmarillion is autistic and has selective mutism
Maeglin from the Silmarillion is autistic and has BPD and Solar Urticaria, he is also visually impaired
Mila Babicheva from Yuri on Ice is deaf and wears hearing aids, she also has G-HSD
Feel free to add your own!

It would have been so much easier to get "Eros" if Yuuri had equated it with a special interest intead of food.
(autistic me after 3 years of being a YOI fan, writing a long-ass novelisation and discussion this novelisation with two different people)
(the irony is that if Yuuri had a special interest, it would be Viktor lol)

Hi again...I'm the anon that ask before.....My first ask is about Yuri on Ice....Who are your top 3 or top 5 fav characters from that fandom and why do you love them? What are your top 5 fav moments from the series? Feel free if you want to pick either or answer all the questions....Thanks if you want to answer....
These questions are a lot of fun!
My top 3 characters are the main three. I'm very much a basic bitch with that but!
5. Minami: I just love a good day of sunshine character and I love that he's Yuuri's fanboy
6. Phichit: he is such a wonderful breath of fresh air and such a joy to have on screen as well as Captain of the ship Victuuri
3. Yurio: I was a very angry teen back when I was one so I can empathize with Yurio. I also really like his character arc. The funniest thing for me is I hated him in the first episode but the moment he saw the tiger sweatshirt in Hasetsu and was all "awesome fashion" I decided I loved him and he was my adopted fictional son.
2. Victor: how can anyone not love Victor and how he can be serious and charming one second and a gigantic dork the next? He's such a goof and I love that about him. Plus he's so serious about trying to be a good coach
1. Yuuri: he's my pal, my homeboy, my rotten soldier, my sweet cheese, my good time boy.
Though seriously I just identify SO strongly with Yuuri and his insecurities and self confidence issues and anxiety. He also reads (in retrospect) very autistic to me so I project onto him even harder. He's such a grounded and realistic character to me. Plus his ambiguous relationship with gender is something I also really needed when I started watching it
As for top 5 moments....that's tougher....
Hmmm
I will admit it's been a little bit since I've watched the series (need to break out the dvd)
But! ...I need more then 5
6.. The beach scene were Yuri confesses his fears and asks Victor to be Victor. It's very touching and just such an important turning point
5. The carpark scene in China when Victor fucks up. Because we don't usually see him so out of his depth and panicked and it's a great (and rare) insight into his mind
4 Yuuri telling Victor to leave him at the competition to be with his dog. Even though he knows he'll struggle he wants what's best for Victor and it's a really nice moment
3. The kiss. It was such a shocking (in a great way!) moment because up to that point everyone thought it was probably just queer baiting us and BAM an actual kiss! Even though it was censored it a huge deal at the time
2. The proposal! We were all joking about it being rings but we're convinced it was talking about medals but then we get the rings! The fandom at that point lost our shit! It's really incredible and unlike a kiss they make it clear it's an engagement with "we'll get married when he wins gold
1. The reveal/flashback of Sochi where we learn about Yuuri getting drunk and that he asked Victor to be his coach and just how it reframed the entire series! It's still one of the best twists in media. It changes the context of everything and it's so beautifully done
Honourable mention: the Zombie Hug scene. It's just so fucking funny

characters who i love (which i recently realised is bc they’re coded to be very relatable):
- saiki kusuo (disasterous life of saiki k) ~> very aroace coded
- anya (buffy the vampire slayer) ~> very autistic coded
- langa (sk8 the infinity) ~> autistic
- reki (sk8) ~> adhd
- katsuki yuuri (yuri on ice) ~> anxiety
- sherlock holmes (bbc sherlock) ~> autism/aroace
- penny (6 times we almost kissed) ~> anxiety
that’s all the ones i can remember off the top of my head (ik there’s tons i’ve forgotten tho)
btw these r mostly headcanons, i don’t think most of these are canon/confirmed

✨bee [bee and puppycat]- namesake special interest etc etc i love her!!! i relate to being someone who dresses cute and doesnt know how to function as an adult in a world that forces me to
✨spock [star trek, both tos and aos]- he’s serving LOOKS he has TRAUMA he’s constantly fighting between two sides of himself and he loves jim kirk more than anything in the world. aos spock gets a special card for being more pathetic

✨ catra [she-ra and the princesses of power]- she’s just so good and strong and makes her own family
✨ baz [simon snow series]- a gay VAMPIRE with so much self-pity and trauma 😭😭😭 my most pathetic creature i love him
✨ laurent [captive prince]- imagine me just humming autistically i have too many thoughts about him
✨ victor [yuri on ice]- i also have autistic thoughts about him he has so much love to give and he’s been so alone for so long and yuuri sees him

I was tagged by @demoiselledefortune Thank you!!!
fave colour: purple
currently reading: mo dao zu shi and heaven official’s blessing
last song: Cloud Shameless
last series: I finished the Books of the Raksura series a while ago but I’m still not emotionally over it… it has everything I didn’t know I needed… a matriarchal society of dragon people, a bisexual malewife protag, polyamory as the norm, extensive lore, massive world-building… I don’t know if I will ever find another series that will compare
last movie: the new West Side Story
currently working on: way too many projects at once… fanfics, original writing, drawing, trying to get through fire emblem heroes: three hopes…
