This is the second time I've seen a post where someone said Sokka must have done Aang's Kyoshi makeup in "Avatar Day", despite the fact that it was Katara's idea and Sokka had no part in it.

This time the post was also combined with the ridiculous panic about the live action "butchering Sokka's arc" because Sokka's actor had the gall to say they toned down his sexism.

And I can't say anything except that it is completely unsurprising to me that people who give male characters inflated praise for treating women with basic humanity also are the same types of people who give credit to male characters for stuff female characters actually did in the narrative.

Aside from the total bs that is the Sokka Sexism Discourse, just because Sokka wore Kyoshi makeup once does not mean he is suddenly an expert on it, from either a cultural or gender perspective, and he certainly isn't an expert on things his sister actually does. Do you know who does know how to put on makeup, though? Katara does. Do you know who put the Kyoshi makeup on Aang? Katara did.

My ATLA rewatch continues, and so do the zukaang parallels....

In Avatar Day, Aang discovers that the Avatar isn't always venerated as the hero of the world, and he's forced to deal with the fact that one of his past lives (Kyoshi) killed someone in the past. He feels like he has to defend his honor by facing justice for that "crime," which Kyoshi did as a last resort measure for her and her people's survival. Meanwhile, Zuko sinks deeper into shame and despair as his chances of capturing the Avatar seem more and more impossible, since he and his uncle are barely scraping by. "There's no honor for me without the Avatar." So he puts on a mask that allows him to cast off his honor and evade justice, committing crimes that he believes are necessary for him to survive.

In Zuko Alone, Zuko sees first-hand the kind of tragedy that the war inflicts on the world. He also discovers that he isn't welcome anywhere in the world as the Fire Nation prince and (former) heir to the throne, making his physical and emotional exile complete. The only home he has left is with Iroh, mirroring the way that the only home that Aang has anymore is with the Gaang.

The Chase - nothing deep here, just that the three-person standoff between Aang, Zuko, and Azula feels so very zukaang, with Zuko saying "Back off, Azula! He's mine!" and Aang giggling at Zuzu's nickname 🤭

"A hundred years passed and my brother and I discovered the new Avatar" That wasn't just chance, was it? Wanna bet that it also wasn't just chance that Zuko was near enough to see the beam of light?

HOW LONG DO YOU HAVE TO BE ASLEEP FOR A SPIDER TO SET UP SHOP IN YOUR MOUTH?!?!?

"What are you doing in my mouth" is a sentence so ripe for innuendo-isation that my brain tripped over itself trying to come up with a dirty way to spin it.

Love the boundary talk too. I had no idea that kind of therapy speak was around in the early 2000s.

There has got to be a more efficient way of stopping someone who can canonically fly than pulling down a whole ass tree vaguely in their path. And how strong are these rhino things?

Did that mask guy just try to bomb a child?

Boomerang has to come back though. That what boomerangs do. I refuse to believe that boomerang is gone.

I guessed about halfway through season 1 that Zuko would have to go through some identity struggles in this show, but I was wrong! It's Sokka who gets to reevaluate his identity. Ponytail guy doesn't have the same ring to it.

I've been wondering why we weren't seeing more Avatar themed places and events. Granted, the avatar's been missing for a century, but in a world where there is recurring proof of a spiritually endowed god-like person's existence, I would expect more temples and Holy days. I mean, we can't even prove that any of our gods exist and we still commit to building megachurches. Imagine how easy it would be to fundraise to build a temple to an Avatar when there's the underlying threat that if you don't donate, the demigod in question could show up at your house.

Two things: first, there were some serious resources invested in these floats. Either this village is loaded or has priority problems. Second: Aang is now well enough known worldwide, that villages he's never been to can accurately depict his appearance, costume, and personality. It really never occurred to them to lay low, did it?

"That's the biggest me I've ever seen." I'm curious to know your sample size.

Sokka could totally carry a torch. It's the torch that wouldn't be worthy of the wielder.

That about sums up my reaction too.

Zuko's in this episode. Hi Zuko! I'd know that musical trill anywhere. When was the last time I saw Zuko?

So I know that Zuko's got a wisdom problem, but could he at least wait until after dark to rob people? While wearing a very recognisable costume that is prominently featured on its own Wanted poster? Just a little common sense I'm begging you.

So in character for it to be Katara who takes action first when Aang is insulted/has his effigy set on fire.

This guy is stupid right? Kyoshi was around at least, what - two hundred years ago? And there's been two avatars since, who as far as I can tell aren't Kyoshi reincarnated but are whole other people, and he's still blaming Aang for some rando's death?

Pro tip: anyone introduced with the expression "glorious leader" is invariably neither glorious nor a good leader. Good leaders don't need hyping up.

I was wondering if that little remark about water tribe money at the beginning of the episode was going to have a payoff. Every time I think it's simple worldbuilding, it turns out to be plot. This show is so neat.

The loss of boomerang is having unforseen effects on Sokka's mental state.

"I can't do that [save the world] with people thinking I'm a murderer either." Says Aang. "So what exactly do you think every earth kingdom and water tribe person assumes you're going to do to the Fire Lord?" Says I. To be clear, I don't want to watch a goofy 12 year old commit a war crime, but I guarantee that no one in the avatar world is under any illusions about any fire lord going quietly.

How does Aang know how do push the 'expert detective' button?

How long is Katara's arm?

Ok I'm guessing from Katara and Aang's reaction to the polar leopard boots story, that Aang knew that Sokka could be conned into helping with 'expert detective' talk, because Sokka has retold the polar leopard boots story 800 times.

I found the sane people is this village! You know what I love? When they're listing Aang's good points, being the Avatar comes FORTH. They get that he's more than his title.

I'm sorry but I cannot believe that this painting, which lives in a building without a door, is three hundred years old. Unless that thing is behind 15 layers of varnish or invisible glass, humidity would have destroyed it in the first decade.

Katara getting ragdolled got a big laugh from me. Plus the follow up pipe to the noggin. Gotta love a sibling slap fight!

With that model of justice it's no wonder the sane ones are in jail.

Sounds like someone was chasing butterflies when he should have been paying attention...

Zuko again. I'd forgotten he was in this episode.

"There is a simple honour in poverty" is a good-sounding line, but I'd believe it more if it wasn't coming from a former crown prince who, until like three weeks ago, never wanted for anything.

Can someone please make Zuko aware of the fact that honour as a concept exists outside of an avatar-capturing context?

In my experience, the hope you give to yourself when there's no hope left is less hope and more spite. Still works though.

Was all that talk about not touching Kyoshi's things just talk, or did the water tribe siblings have to steal this stuff?

Badadss lady speech aside, it's pretty funny that Kyoshi used her ability to manifest to be the opposite of helpful.

Just when I thought he couldn't possibly get more stupid, he sinks to an even lower level of dumbass. Zuko sucks all the common sense out of any room he enters; the only thing that's kept him alive this long is being in proximity to the world's wisest man as balance. So what does Zuko do? Rides off into the sunset WITHOUT Iroh. Dumbass. I give him two days before he dies in a freak foraging accident. Dumbass.

SERIOUSLY. DUMBASS.

Never thought I'd be happy to see these guys, but here I am.

Petty Aang! I've never seen petty Aang before. Boy contains multitudes.

Three of these jokes in a single episode. This episode does rather feel as though it was written with the brakes off.

The lead rhino takes one look at Aang and is like "I'm not going to mess with that. Let's burn down some buildings instead." Let the record show, the lead rhino has more sense than Chin the Conqueror.

I knew it! Boomerang came back!

Raw dough. Uncooked dough. Their new snack is salmonella. "This is by far the worst town we've ever been to." Thanks to Sokka for the thesis statement.

Final Thoughts

This episode was hot nonsense! And I love nonsense, but it's too far when I find myself rooting FOR the rhinos. To be clear, I loved this episode's humour and especially the sibling dynamic between Sokka and Katara. I've literally had that exact conversation with siblings, usually about who gets to be the one to tell Mom about the spectacular awesome thing we saw that totally wasn't our fault and that we totally saw without going somewhere we shouldn't have.

But! The villagers? Stupid. We cut to Zuko? Heretofore unseen levels of Stupid. Even Iroh was being stupid. You do have to let children learn things for themselves and make their own mistakes, but in enemy territory? With a documented history of dumbass behaviour? And a propensity for dressing as a wanted criminal, while also being a different wanted fugitive while out of disguise? Mark my words; it's going to end stupid.

I loved the C plot with Sokka and identity. It's funny how it parallels/speedruns the journey Zuko's going to have to end up doing at some point (he'd BETTER), although probably not in a single episode with goofy props. If only teenage identity crises were as easily solved as a returned boomerang.

That scene with Kyoshi sure was something, huh? I actually rewound and watched it twice through before I tried to comment on it, because I was too enthralled to do anything but watch.

If all Avatars can do what Kyoshi can do, then Aang is: a) nowhere near as developed an Avatar as I've been assuming, and b) going to be really really scary one day. Not sure how I feel about Scary Aang. Although petty Aang was fun.

I love monster of the week episodes with low stakes and high humour, but this one was had so much stupid coming at me from so many directions that it did get a little annoying. Still, I'll rewatch it. That Kyoshi bit was delicious.

First clip: Sokka is wearing his goofy ass getup (blue hat and extended monocle) and fiddling with his dragon pipe explaining why Kyoshi couldn't have murdered Chin the Great while looking at a painting of her waving to the people in a ceremony.

Sokka: If Kyoshi was at the ceremony at sunset, she couldn't have been in Chin committing the crime. She has an alibi!

Clip two: Aang in a pillory at the crime scene presenting the evidence and failing miserably to unimpressed townspeople.

Aang: *whispering* Oh, yeah! *to the crowd* You see, I have very large feet. Furthermore, your temple matches your statue. But... I was in a painting at sunset. So there you have it, I'm not guilty!

Kyoshi was 42 when she founded Kyoshi island.

I'm re watching Avatar day and i just wanted to do the maths.

Kyoshi died at 230 years old

Roku died at 70

Then Aang is 112 when Avatar day takes place.

Yajirobi says the island was formed 370 years ago so.

230+70+112= 412

412-370= 42.

Kyoshi was 42 when she faced Chin the concourer and created Kyoshi island. So i think the fan theory of why Kyoshi let Chin take over so much of the earth Kingdom is out the window since the popular theory is she was grieving Rangi's death. Unless Rangi died pretty young at 42 or under which is still possible but i think unlikely.

iroh trying to gently tell zuko in avatar day that capturing the avatar probably wouldn’t help them at this point (since, you know, they are wanted fugitives and enemies of the fire nation and their wanted posters quite literally encourage they be killed on sight) is so sad because he’s right. and… i do think zuko actually knows he has a point, if the way he reacts immediately afterward is any indication. he’s not argumentative about the point. in the moment, he kind of implicitly trusts iroh’s words, only conceding that if that’s true “then there’s no hope at all”, which alarms iroh (to the point of sternness, which is a big deal for iroh!) because hopelessness and despair are not healthy things to succumb to.

but the point, i guess, is that zuko does seem to, at least on some level, trust that what iroh is saying is true—in this moment. but he doesn’t know what to do with that, because if his father will really never love or accept him, if the one mission he was given that his father said would change things really no longer matters, if he can really never go home again, how can he feel anything but hopeless?

so he comes to the conclusion that he has to separate himself from iroh, who is a personified reminder of truths he’s not ready to face (as well as someone who is genuinely trying to look out for him), and will spend the next several episodes lying to himself, following azula’s path to the gaang at first opportunity that presents itself in the chase.

but the thing is—the way he’s lying to himself here is different, i think, than the way he was lying to himself in book one. because he’s not able to do it quite as effectively. if we look at zuko alone, he sees the suffering of a small earth kingdom village and sees himself in them, empathizes with their pain—and some very traumatic suppressed memories get stirred as a result. memories that make it clear that on some level, he knows he wasn’t and wouldn’t now suddenly be safe in the fire nation.

at this point, zuko isn’t quite ready or willing to admit the truth that his father is abusive, not safe for him to be with, and doesn’t want him back—but i do think he is internally somewhat more self-aware at this stage than he previously has been. he’s flinching away from the truth, but that doesn’t mean he can’t see it. that’s part of what makes the ending of zuko alone such a downer, because zuko ends the episode as lost and alone as he started, unable to quell the truth of his past and trauma, yet not willing to stop chasing the false promise of hope capturing the avatar represents.

'Avatar Day'

It's been a while since we've had proper and funny Sokka and Katara bickering. Even though Katara mocks Sokka and his loss of boomerang, in the very next scene she is already comforting her brother with a hug, which reveals the true strength of their relationship.

The whole concept of the Avatar Day actually being celebrated by complete antis provided for a nice twist. I'm not sure about Aang's reaction to it and about the lesson the episode was supposed to teach. I think it would be more important to learn acceptance of the fact that everyone just isn't going to love you no matter how hard you try. Wasting time on these ignorant dunderheads when there are some many people out there needing the Avatar's help just didn't seem right.

Sokka's detective hat and water pipe, though. <3 Their bickering and fighting with Katara during the investigation really makes this episode.

We have the Blue Spirit stealing again, both from more and less deserving targets. Iroh at last begins to give Zuko some advice and try to guide him. I'm not sure Iroh expected his lessons to make Zuko seek his own way, though? I mean, are we supposed to believe that he can predict each and every of Zuko's reactions and this is Iroh playing 4D Pai Sho? Or is he throwing crap at the wall to see what sticks?

The Kyoshi village seems to have rebuilt rather nicely. The appearance of Kyoshi herself was such a badass moment. I won't lie, it made me go 'damn, why can't we have this kind of awesome Avatar instead of Blandy McBlandface' . The way Aang went about the whole imprisonment and defending himself thing annoyed me once again, but not enough to give him Jerk Points.

The final fight against Rough Rhinos is a lot of fun. I especially loved the creative ways in which Sokka and Katara took down their opponents. Also, I'll just say it here again - Aang very deliberately killed one of the Rough Riders by throwing him off the cliff.

Also, something that I thought was pretty annoying. Apparently, while being imprisoned, Aang whined to the other inmates about Katara not being interested in him. And of course, everyone keeps assuring Aang that 'she'll come around' and 'he's a great catch'. Once again, the fucking narrative shits all over Katara's feelings.

Overall, however, a very fun but also forgettable episode where there aren't even any Jerk Points to hand out.

Okay I re-watched Avatar Day but I can’t be bothered to write a lengthy or thoughtful re-watch post on it like I’ve been doing with this re-watch. Not cause I don’t like the episode, it’s fun & all, I just don’t feel like I have anything new or interesting to say about it & also I’m busy binging Wednesday right now (new obsession btw). Here are my biggest takeaways:

Sokka’s detective hat & bubble pipe thingy are iconic. It’s hilarious that Aang can make new besties even in prison & kinda an adorable trope for his character how he’s just always making friends BUT even if it’s presented in a jokey way the whole “just be patient the girl you like will come around” framing around Kat/a.ang continues to piss me off. Sorry not sorry, love both characters but this is just an entire framing issue around the romance that makes it completely unpalatable to me. Sokka & Katara’s dynamic in this episode is peek water siblings. I love Katara teasing Sokka but at the same time actually supporting his detective fantasy & letting him have his moments.

Oh, & Iroh’s lesson to Zuko about hope was one of his more impactful lessons for the audience, in my opinion, even if it didn’t stick with Zuko (which makes sense considering his dark headspace).

“You must never give into despair. Allow yourself to slip down that road and you surrender to your lowest instincts. In the darkest times, hope is something you give yourself. That is the meaning of inner strength.”

That’s just a good line & it’s always stuck with me.

Also, the “boiled in oil” line delivery is literally THEE funniest thing ever to me. Rip to Aang but if someone told me that’s how I was dying in that cadence, I would simply laugh.

Oh, & last thing - very awesome to see Miss Kyoshi herself, love her.
