the days when avengers engage in senseless brawls among themselves are past--as long as the scarlet witch can help it... and i most certainly can!

hank reads a collection of piet hein grooks, which i believe is the dutch name for a poem. piet hein was a polymath as well as a poet, so hank being a fan makes sense! also, i know hank has big hands, but that book looks so small....

Hi! I've recently discovered your blog and I'm loving it! I'm starting to learn more about Stephen in comics and I was wondering if you had some reading list for starters? I've searched it on google but they're all different and I'm kinda lost. It would help a lot! Also also, are there any significant differences from old to current comics? Thanks, have a great day!
Oh, this is indeed sweet! Thank you, I’m glad you’re having such a good experience in this mystic realm!
I think I’ll answer your second question first. Yes, there are significant differences. The old issues (until 80′s and 90′s) are little more difficult to read. Their narratives are longer since it was Stan Lee’s brand (and it continued mostly because he was his co-creator along with Steve Ditko). Also Stephen’s personality has changed through all these years. Until the 90′s, he was a devoted man, with few flaws and lots of commitment. Then there was a huge (and I dare say horrible) change in his personality. He became a dog. He cheated on Clea with several women, gosh. It was hard to read this new Stephen. Not only that, but he started betraying his friends. He sent Hulk to another planet without his consent, his very old friend. He lied to everyone. Not even Wong liked him. Thank the Vishanti, the writers are currently trying to fix this mess with AMAZING plots, exploring his fears, uncertainties, anxiety, loneliness, regrets and depression. I’d say they can’t erase those terrible canon stories, but something good can arise from this garbage. You know, 90′s were bad for comics.
Now, about the reading list: yes, I do have a humble reading list, but I shall warn you, it will be a long road for Stephen’s first appearance happened back in 1963 and he’s a very important character in Marvel’s universe! Here it goes:Introducing Stephen’s backstory as a former surgeon until he becomes the Sorcerer Supreme, featuring his allies - The Ancient One, Wong and Clea - and his main enemies - Baron Mordo, Dormammu, Nightmare, Umar, Shuma-Gorath and others:- Strange Tales #110-111- Strange Tales #114-168- Doctor Strange v1 #169-183 (it follows Strange Tales)
The formation of the Defenders:
- Sub-Mariner #22- The Incredible Hulk #126- Marvel Feature #1-3
The whole original Defenders team until its new formation (this is NOT a MUST READ but it’s good to understand Stephen’s leadership and great deeds):
- Defenders v1 #1-125
The Ancient One’s death you MUST READ:
- Marvel Premiere #3-14
Lots of canon, important stories:
- Doctor Strange - Master of the Mystic Arts #1-81 + Annual (also known as Doctor Strange v2)- Strange Tales v2 #1-19- Doctor Strange Sorcerer Supreme #1-90 + Annuals- Doctor Strange v3 #1-4
Another Defenders stories (also NOT a must read)
- Defenders v2 #1-12- Defenders v3 #1-5- Defenders v4 #1-12 (this one had so much potential but its ending ugh…)- Secret Defenders #1-11
Mega-events that are really messed-up (and sometimes bad) but Marvel forces their readers to fend for themselves yet I’m still recommending them because Stephen’s really important in these stories gosh he practically saves everyone:
- The Infinity Gauntlet (entire series)- House of M (entire series)- New Avengers v1 #26-54 (here you will read how Stephen tries to make it up to TeamCap after Civil War and it’s beautiful I cry)- New Avengers: Illuminati v2 #1-5- World War Hulk (entire series)- New Avengers v2 #1-34- New Avengers v3 + Secret Wars 3 (entire series except for the tie-ins. Never read the tie-ins, I mean it)
Your life depends on reading this volume by the Hoary Hosts of Hoggoth Jason Aaron and Donny Cates destroyed my heart with these issues this is a DEFINITELY MUST READ volume and it’s 100% guaranteed you’re gonna love it:
- Doctor Strange v4 (entire series + Annual). There was an attempt of renumbering issues. The number 26 jumped to v1 #381, and then back again to normal issues as we’re used to. Don’t worry, just ignore Marvel did this as I consider it part of v4 as well.- As it follows the Damnation arc in v4, “Doctor Strange: Damnation” series as well (#1-4). It’s a complementary series for this arc and it’s even more heartbreaking.
Beautiful, touching, atemporal, must read one-shots:
- Doctor Strange & Doctor Doom: Triumph and Torment (my personal favorite)- Shamballa- The Oath
Currently publishing:
- Doctor Strange v5
Now, if you find this list just TOO PAINFUL to read (and believe me, it’s not even complete), I’d recommend to read only the v4, v5 and the one-shots. You will understand the character and his current situation. There are so much more I’d like to recommend such as how he adopted Illyana as his apprentice but you’d have to read X-men, which is another tortuous journey for starters. Any doubts, you may drop another ask. I’ll try to answer the best way I can.
May the Vishanti be your guide.
How can the Sorcerer Supreme be of assistance?
