Remember, don't buy from Baker Creek!
It's seed catalog time for the new year! And as usual, that means it's time for my yearly warning.
Baker Creek are assholes.
I know a lot of people will be getting into gardening for the first time, or expanding their seed bank. One of the sweetest times of my year involves sitting in a warm blanket with a cup of tea or cocoa, going over a stack of catalogs two inches thick, and daydreaming about spring.
While one of the prettiest of these catalogs is that which arrives from Baker Creek /rareseeds.com, we DO NOT BUY FROM THEM.
They are party to graverobbing, and steal from native seedkeepers.
They platform fascists and white supremacists.
If there's a seed they carry that really interests you, you can PM me and I might be able to find it somewhere else. But it is better to not have a particular plant, than to support these people.

It's january, which means it's seed-buying time for many gardeners! So, here is your reminder: Do not buy anything from Baker Creek / Rareseeds. com ; they are racist, anti-vaxxers; they steal varieties from Native communities, are friends with Clive Bundy, wanted to invite Robert F Kennedy Jr to one of their seed expos. They've fundraised for the homophobic and misogynistic Salvation Army
They have adopted young children from asian countries to use as free advertising for their "~exotic Asian seed varieties~" by having them pose with all of the (stolen + renamed) Asian varieties as young children-- might have to check the Wayback Machine to see this in action, or look at physical seed packets for this, as they've cut back on it after coming underfire for such a gross practice.
Anyways, would you like to know who you SHOULD support this year when purchasing seeds?
Experimental Farm Network, who has been nothing but vocally supportive of Palestinians and calling for everyone to do what they can to end the genocide Israel is committing.
Tumblr media
[ID: A facebook post by Experimental Farm Network, which shows a hand holding three young, fuzzy Yakteen gourds, which are oblong, light green fruits with a visible fuzz on the outside, with dried blossoms visible on the ends. The post reads: "These are 'Palestine Yakteen' gourds at almost the perfect size for harvest. I normally would've waited to pick them about twice as large, when they're still tender and delicious. But the first big frost (a couple months ago) had killed the plant, so these were officially done. The plant was a volunteer in my backyard. I didn't even know it was there until about September, and in November I was enjoying these first — and last — fruit (with garlic, parsley, salt, and Palestinian olive oil). It was, no doubt, the most bittersweet meal of my life. Today is the 100th day of unimaginable violence against Palestinians in Gaza. South Africa is arguing in the International Court of Justice that Israel is committing genocide. Hundreds of Gazans are still dying every day, from bombings, yes, but now also from hunger, thirst, disease, and exposure. From the comfort of our heated homes, with our drinkable running water, working toilets, and well-stocked pantries, in communities with functioning clinics, hospitals, and pharmacies available to us should we need them, it's impossible to really understand what life is like in Gaza right now. It may seem incongruous — or even trite — to post a picture of some pretty vegetables in this context, but the Yakteen can serve as an important reminder of the humanity and beauty of Palestinian people and their ancient culture. They are not nameless, faceless nobodies. They tend gardens, smell flowers, celebrate with family and friends over steaming dishes of lovingly prepared food. They love deeply. They sing and dance and laugh. They are just like you or me. Please do not only remember them today. Take action to help them. Or resolve to take action. Or reach out and ask someone how you can take action. Do something. Please. Because you can. end ID]
This is just one of many posts they have shared on their social medias since the genocide began, and they have been partnered with Palestine Heirloom Seed Library to help raise funds; each packet of seeds from their Palestine collection has 50% of the proceeds going towards funding the Seed Library, and they
If you have friends or family who order from Baker Creek, please let them know exactly who they are supporting -- and reassure them that dozens of other seed companies with much better ethics are out there, offering those exact same "rare" varieties! Seedsavers.org is another great heirloom alternative, with the bonus that they regularly work on seed Rematriation- returning Native heirloom varieties to the indiginous communities who created them

This summer I was fortunate enough to find a wild yeast bloom on one of my chokecherry trees. I harvested & dried those chokecherries, then soaked them in water til they fermented. Then I used that levain to jumpstart a buckwheat/sweet white rice flour gf sourdough starter. (The picture is literally day one, now it’s so bubbly it looks like hot air)
((If you don’t know what hot air candy is, oh my god run don’t walk to your nearest fancy candy store and try some NOW))
But the thing is? Right after I got this starter established, I needed to go overseas for 2 weeks and Mr61below already had far too much on his plate, so I put it in the fridge so he’d only need to feed it once. But the cold really did a number on it, and it took me two whole weeks to get it bubbly again. I was legit concerned I’d gone and fully killed it. But, now it’s happily churning away again, and this is my second loaf made with this baby.

December 2022: The Next to The Last Day
The freezing temperatures ended around the 28th of December. Now, we are back in the 60s... and it’s raining. We aren’t predicted to see winter temperatures again until next Wednesday. So far, the first plant to show signs of recovering from the freeze is our cilantro:

It was so warm today that I made a new friend:

My seeds from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds came in
Purple Basil, marjoram, balloon flower, two varieties of extremely cute pansies, Boston Pickling Cucimbers, 4 types of squash (Zucchini Nimba is apparently a POLISH Heirloom variety? Whaaat?) The Long White of Palermo zucchini looks neat. Portola a (Moss Rose) seeds bc they're extremely awesome for surviving here. Black Strawberry Tomato - so next year we should have the Malinowki, the yellow tomatoes, and these dark colored tomatoes. Anand a variety of alpine strawberry bc I want to build a....thingy...for our current wild strawberries and add these to the roster.
I also got a neat grow light to start seeds in late winter. I'm going to try it out now by growing some marjoram indoors, we'll see.

Requisite Yearly We Do Not Buy from Baker Creek post
It's seed catalog time! One of my favorite times of year, honestly. While my garden mostly sleeps, full of dry leaves and fluffed-up birds and cold breezes, I'm indoors contemplating tomato varieties and telling myself that *this* will at last be the year I get the peas in on time.
As it is that appointed time, my usual yearly reminder: don't buy from Baker Creek!
Baker Creek are racist, fascist assholes! They intended to platform Cliven Bundy at their yearly conference, and Native seedkeepers have said that Baker Creek stole from them (and sell the product of that theft). They did a For Ukraine fundraiser that actually went to a far-right Ukrainian organization invested in obliterating LGBT rights.
Baker Creek might have some fun varieties of seed, but I can very nearly guarantee that if you see something there you want, I can find it or an analogue for you somewhere else.
Here's a selection of seed companies I personally have bought from, or people I trust have recommended; there will be a secondary and possibly tertiary reblog, since Tumblr only allows me to do ten links at once. If there's a company you've bought from and liked, please leave a review for them in the comments! What did you get, what did you like, how was the germination? Native Seed Companies: (please, please feel free to add more in comments to this post)
Companies Specializing in Native Pollinator Plants and Seed:
New to me last year, but HIGHLY RECOMMENDED seed preservation company (they have an incredible selection! My 2023 germination of their seed was like 98%! But they only accept paper order forms):
Cool weird nightshades, I got a bunch of dwarf tomato seeds from them last year and THEY didn't suffer from peppergate because they're a small company that does a lot of their own seed:
A list of ten more companies or so, which I buy from every year, will follow in a reblog in about two minutes; please share that one instead of this one.

"Baker Creek vs The Purple Tomato - Did they lie??" from Pam's Pretty Plants
* This covers so much more than the GMO Tomato controversy. I'd heard of some of these, and even those controversies wind up going much deeper than I'd originally heard.

Our 2023 garden: last seed order has arrived
The last seed order I made, with Baker Creek, arrived this morning! This was a last minute order that was not at all part of our garden plan for the year. Interestingly, while the website warned that Canadian orders are now subject to duty, I did not have to pay anything when I picked up the package. There is a customs label on top of the original package label, and it says something about an…

It's that time of year ... Seed Catalogs!
Technically, all of my seed catalogs arrived at the end of 2022 but I haven’t had a chance to go through them. Let’s be honest, seed catalogs are dangerous! So many delicious and beautiful things to grow jump off the page and demand to be purchased. Temptation is a constant companion when flipping through seed catalogs. The above catalogs I haven’t ordered from but I was more than a wee bit…

man I sure am not frustrated about the sudden change of post icons in the activity tab. it's not like I use the little thumbnails to figure out wtf people are interacting with and the switch to the new shit makes it harder to figure that out without like, clicking on the thing and potentially exposing myself to bullshit like pornbots or phishing attempts. not at all.
gonna go make some lunch and contemplate shoving a bunch of mini doughnuts in my face instead of something that is not heavily sugared.
