The Charms of Bayberry Wax
Earlier this year, I went about rendering wax from Bayberries for the first time in my life. The experience was a bit painstaking, but I am grateful for what I learned in the process, and for the wax I managed to get from it in the end. I look forward to using it in special rites and celebrations.
For any curious or confused about what I'm mentioning, the Myrica cerifera plant—commonly known as the Bayberry bush or Wax Myrtle—posesses berries that, when properly rendered, can produce a greenish wax. It's not all too different from beeswax, though it's more brittle, it burns differently, and it has a mild and vaguely herbal sent, kind of similar to olive oil. This wax can be used to make things like candles, and it posesses strong virtues relating to both fortune and wellbeing.

My local co-op never fails me - I just found a pack of two bayberry taper candles that were locally made. Technically a combination of beeswax and bayberry, but no complaints here.

I was reading recently that bayberry's leaves can be used in place of bay laurel leaves in cooking. Has anybody done this? (silly me thinking, for some stupid reason, that they were called bay-berry for the Massachusetts bay when they were called that because they resembled bay laurel?)
I really love bay laurel but would love it even more if I could grow a plant in my garden for this purpose so that I didn't have to overwinter it in my house.
Also, of course, I learn this now AFTER I hung out with bayberry at the beach for a week and didn't gather any leaves so I won't be able to try until sometime later this summer at the earliest.
